    Remploy update

Conor being shown around the Remploy factory in Poole. The above photo shows Conor seeing a machine used to makebriquettes for fires from recycled materials and the photo belowshows Conor with the end product. These can be bought by the

public from www.sew-green.co.uk or by phoning Remploy on01202 743445 and picking them up from the factory.

Conor visited the Remploy factory again last week to discuss thefuture of the Poole site. The factory, which is due to close along with35 other sites, currently employs 17 people, including 15 people withdisabilities. The factory manufactures products from recycledmaterials. The closure comes from recommendations in the Sayce Reviewpublished in June 2011 which suggested future Government moneyshould be used to give further support in the community to disabledpeople rather than subsiding exclusive projects such as Remploy. The Government has said the money saved from Remploy will beinvested in helping disabled people into mainstream work, for examplethrough the Access to Work scheme. Access to Work offers extrasupport and financial help for both employees who have a disabilityand their potential employers. Furthermore the Department of Workand Pensions has offered assurances to Remploy ensuring that acomprehensive package of support is available to help any employeewho is made redundant. One option for the Poole factory coming out the Sayce Review is thepotential for Remploy sites to operate as businesses outside ofGovernment control where commercially viable.

Commenting, Conor said, The proposal to close the Alder Hillsfactory is devastating for those who work there and for their families. Ihave however had a very positive meeting with the factorymanagement. We are exploring the possibility of taking the site backinto the community as some form of social enterprise, for the benefit oflocal people. This raises a number of questions, on which I am intouch with the Department of Work & Pensions and the Borough ofPoole. It is crucial that factories ear-marked for closure are givenevery chance of remaining open through acquisition, and I want to besure that the terms and conditions under which that could be agreedare fair to all.Last year Remploy found jobs in mainstream employment throughout

the country for more than 20,000 people with a range of disabilitiesand works with more than 2,500 of the countrys biggest employersincluding BT, ASDA, Royal Mail, Sainsburys, the NHS and Marks andSpencers.Information on the Access to Work to work scheme can be found byclicking here.

No to the Navitus Bay Wind Park

off the coast of DorsetAn e-petition has been started on theNumber 10 website urging people tovoice their opposition to the NavitusBay Wind Park which will blight theDorset coastline with Eneco planning tobuild 150 to 240 turbines in Poole Bay,around 10 miles from Bournemouthand Poole, and eight miles fromSwanage and Christchurch. The petition reads, We the

undersigned are against the NavitusBay Wind Park plans off the JurrasicCoast by Eneco , though we are all forthe needs of renewable energy , we

just don't want this wind farm this closeto our shores. It's the visual impact weare concerned about. Please ask thiscompany to place it further out into seawhere it's not visible. To sign the No to Navitus Bay e-petitionclick here.Commenting Conor said, This petition is a chance for local people to

make their objections known about the wind park. I congratulate thelocal people who have started the petition and I would urge everyoneconcerned to take a minute to sign it.Mark Smith, Bournemouths head of tourism, is quoted in theBournemouth Echo as saying research suggests the scheme couldcost Dorset 500 of the 18,000 jobs in its tourism sector.Still at consultation stage, the scheme will need planning permissionfrom the government. Conor believes Bournemouth should havesome democratic input and has arranged a meeting with ministersGreg Clark and Ed Davey to press the case against.Speaking to the Bournemouth Echo, Conor added: We need todiversify our energy supply for all kinds of reasons. But there are lotsof places you can out this without it being to the detriment of people.I had a meeting with Eneco, the company doing the work, and I am

putting them under enormous pressure to show us some visuals ofhow they will look.Basically as long as you cant see it, we dont mind. If they move it asclose to the shore as they can, and build them as high as they can, they will have a problem with us.Tourism is the biggest employer in Bournemouth and anything thatharms it I would be against.

I want people to sign because my big fear is that people arent awareof whats happening, and this will creep up on us and people will say:What did you do about it?E-petitions are an easy way for people to challenge and influencepolicy. They can be started by anyone, and if 100,000 people sign ane-petition then it is eligible for debate in the House of Commons. To sign the No to Navitus Bay e-petition click here.

Update: Proposed Tescos developmentin KinsonBournemouth Borough Council has officially refused the planningapplication to build a new Tescos supermarket in Kinson due to Tescoand developer HR Properties not entering into a Section 106

Agreement with the Council. The Section 106 proposal asked for afinancial contribution from the company for the roads surrounding thedevelopment to mitigate the extra strain on the existing roadinfrastructure by the extra traffic using the store. The application, which was recommended for approval in November 2011, wasofficially refused towards the end of March. It is understood that a

new application will be submitted and HR Properties still plan to beginwork at the end of next year.Commenting, Conor said, This set back will be hugely frustrating formany local residents who are keen to see investment in Kinson. I willcontinue to work closely with local businesses and residents to get thebest possible outcome for the area.

    Conor questions Cabinet Office Minister

on party fundingMonday 26th March 2012

Click on the image above to watch Conors questionand the Ministers reply. The text of the exchange was as follows:Conor Burns (Bournemouth West, Conservative): Does my righthon. Friend agree that one of the great sadnesses of the last 24 hoursis that our politics is in the news again for all the wrong reasons? Doeshe further agree that any settlement on the funding of political partiesmust include the trade union movement? Lastly, does he agree that aswell as a cap on donations, we should be looking at a national cap onspending that will bring to an end silly spending for pointless reasons?Francis Maude (Minister for the Cabinet Office; Horsham,Conservative): Of course there is already a cap on spending atelection time, but that is undoubtedly one thing that could be lookedat. Indeed, it was looked at in the previous discussions, and no doubtit will be on the table again.

    Conor in the papers:

MP makes case to keep open

    Pooles DVLA office

Melanie Vass, Daily EchoWednesday 28th March 2012There is a compelling case for Pooles DVLA office and enforcementcentre to remain open, an MP has claimed.Bournemouth West MP Conor Burns has urged the government toconsider Bournemouth and Pooles significant elderly population andsave the Bourne Gate office from closure. To support his call, he passed on a list of difficult cases dealt with bylocal DVLA staff in a typical weeks work. Currently motorists travel toPoole from as far afield as Yeovil to be able to speak to a DVLA

    representative in person.These cases included:

A customer importing an Indian scooter from India which hadbeen converted into a tricycle. He needed to show staff hispaperwork and be advised what to do next.

A member of the armed forces registering his British ForcesGermany vehicle over the counter.

An elderly customer who had received his tax reminder in theprevious registration mark and had not received a registrationdocument for the new mark.

Two customers who had bought Northern Ireland vehicles andneeded to register and tax them.

A motorist from Salisbury who was trying to tax his vehiclewhen an error on the DVLA record suggested his car was stilltaxed.

An elderly customer who was unable to tax her vehicle onlineas the insurance had not been updated on her records.

In a letter to transport minister Mike Penning, Mr Burns said theseexamples illustrated how important the local office was to thecommunity, particularly to older customers who may be unable to goonline.Bournemouth and Pooles significant elderly population, our proximity

to ports at Poole and Weymouth, and the large number of vehicledealerships in the conurbation combine to make a compelling case forthe office to remain open, he said.

    Conor in the papers:
