Conor in the papers: "Extraordinary" meeting to be called over Fozard pay scandal Toby Wadey, Bournemouth Echo Thursday 13th August 2015 Worried Royal Bournemouth Hospital governors are calling an “extraordinary meeting” over the Basil Fozard scandal. The trust has been under mounting pressure since revelations that it reappointed the medical director on a bumper £152,000 salary - £20,000 more than he was being paid previously for the same role – just one month after he "retired" and began drawing from his £1.9million NHS pension. As reported by the Daily Echo, the decision was a calculated one, with the trust publishing the details on page 159 of its annual report - just days before health secretary Jeremy Hunt announced the loophole allowing the trick would be closed. Mr Fozard, who will no longer see patients, was also entitled to a lump sum worth up to £325,000. The Department of Health contacted the trust demanding answers and branded the decision “completely unacceptable”. MP for Bournemouth West Conor Burns described it as “morally wrong” and Christchurch MP Chris Chope said the hospital needed to “come clean”. And yesterday, in a brief email responding to questions posed by Cllr Philip Eades, who represents Branksome West at Borough of Poole, the governors said: “Recognising the concerns of the membership and public, the governors have asked for an Extraordinary Council of Governors meeting to be held as soon as possible.” They added that the governors were not aware of the decision to reappoint Mr Fozard until July 24 - 23 days after he had started working again. Cllr Eades said the trust’s chairman, Jane Stichbury, has “serious questions to answer” and must have “chosen not to tell any of the governors”. “She appears to have known all about this deal and to have gone along with it,” he said. “The whole thing just doesn’t smell right. This is not a private business; this is public money and a public service. “The governors were elected by the local constituents to provide an oversight for what is happening at the hospital. They are elected by the people and they need to tell us what has happened. “There needs to be an independent investigation conducted by people from outside the trust as clearly the governors are not going to do it.” When the Echo asked the hospital for its response to Cllr Eades’ comments, a spokesman said there was “no story” as the Department of Health and watchdog Monitor had deemed its actions to be “legally above board”. Conor in the papers: Memorial tribute for war hero pilot in road where he was shot down Alex Winter, Bournemouth Echo Tuesday 18th August 2015 A memorial to a Battle of Britain hero has been placed in the road where he was shot down. New Zealander Cecil Henry Hight was just 22 when his Spitfire squadron was scrambled to intercept German bombers on August 15, 1940. During a dogfight over Bournemouth, the plane was shot down, and while Pilot Officer Hight managed to bail out from his aircraft, his parachute never opened, and his body was found under a hedge in the grounds of Hambledon. The house, which was in Leven Avenue, has since been demolished, although owners Alfred and Edith Hoare created a garden of remembrance where they found the body. In order to mark the heroic airman's sacrifice, and on the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, a memorial hewn from Portland stone was unveiled at the junction of Walsford Road, Benellen Avenue and Leven Avenue, near Meyrick Park on Saturday. Ward councillor Lynda Price said: "We're here today to honour a young man who died here, far from home. "He was a New Zealander determined to fight and do his bit for the war effort, so he joined the RAF. His plane came down around 50 yards from this very spot." Mayor John Adams - who played Amazing Grace on the bagpipes following his speech - and MP Conor Burns also paid tribute to the pilot during the short service. The stone was dedicated by the Revd Dr Ian Terry of the town centre parish team. Douglas Collett, president of the Poole branch of the Royal Air Forces Association, said: "I thought the service here today was very good. "We did a presentation here two years ago for Pilot Officer Hight, in which we gave the owners of the house where the aircraft came down a camellia in recognition of his sacrifice." Margot Mabey, of Branksome Park, attended the service. Her late husband Dennis was just 13 when he saw the aircraft fall from the sky. "He and a friend got on their bikes and pedalled around here to see it in the road," she said. "He always had a special interest in Pilot Officer Hight, and I wanted to be here today for him." Tom Harrison was 10 when he saw the plane shot down. Now 85, he said: "I saw it falling from the sky from my house in Branksome. "I thought it was a German aircraft, and it was only the following day in school that I found out that it was one of ours." He said the memorial to the airman was "very fitting", adding: "It's all very well presented."
