EARL STERNDALE CHURCH – A Resurrection Story?
There are plenty of clergy in the Church of England who take the view that we have too many churches and so should close a few when we get the chance. I don’t take that line – for
three main reasons.
Firstly, for all its faults, frustrations and scandals, I believe in Christ’s Church as not merely a human institution but a divine one as well. “My Church”, said Jesus “and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it”. The Church is one of the things God is doing in the world.
Secondly, I have a keen sense of history and of the past. I am always conscious that many – perhaps most – of our villages have had a church at their heart for a thousand years or more. Every parish has its ups and downs and we must take the long view. Who knows what revival of faith may come in the next fifty years? I don’t want a church to be closed ‘on my watch’, if it can be avoided.
Thirdly, my own experience has shown me that churches can be revived if local people can be awoken to their imminent loss. I had six parishes in Lincolnshire and then took on three extras which were carved off the neighbouring group.
One of those had had no services for five years and was semi-derelict. I found that local people regretted its loss and we managed to revive and repair it – it became a success story.
Another church in the group had been dwindling slowly (like Earl Sterndale) over many years – eventually there were literally only two of us alive on the PCC! After a year’s closure to treat dry-rot, we managed to re-open with new Wardens, new folk involved and new people coming to church. It was pulled back from the
very brink of death! We did something similar, in a more limited way, with a third church there.
At Earl Sterndale, things having ground to a halt, we held no services for the Winter months. In June, I went door-knocking with leaflets and in July we had a public meeting and came away with people prepared to be Wardens and others to help. So far so good!
We are having a relaunch of Earl Sterndale Church with a HARVEST FESTIVAL SERVICE at 3.00 pm on SUNDAY 21st OCTOBER 2018.
Whether you live in the parish or outside it, please put the date in your diary now and COME AND JOIN US. Let’s give thanks for the good gifts we’ve received in the past and the present and let’s put our faith in God for the future!
Yours in hope,
Richard Benson,
Vicar

crowd to support them all, the committee would
like to express their extreme gratitude to all who
run these sections, to get the numbers in and the
support given is truly a job well done. The re-
introduction of the Heavy Horse’s proved popular
as we had a good number of Horse’s in attendance

laugh.

Waterloo Inn - We have had a very busy and
successful summer here at The Waterloo Inn. We
were thrilled to be voted the CAMRA
(Chesterfield District) "Summer Pub of the
Season"! It's nice to gain recognition for what you
do but what was even more pleasing was to hear
the comments of the very many local people who
nominated and voted for us.
The Waterloo Inn Fun Day was a great success.
We raised around £750 for the 2 main charities
we supported, Buxton Mountain Rescue and
SARDA (Search & Rescue Dogs) England. The
weather was kind to us and it was excellent that
the many village groups and organisations came
along to support the day by having stalls, raising
even more for their own causes. Well over £1000
was raised in total on the day. We would like to
say a big thank you to Andy for bringing Trainee
Search Dog Geoffrey along on the day and also a
few days later to collect the cheques for the main
charities. Next year's Fun Day is provisionally
booked for Saturday 10th August 2019.
We have been well entertained over the summer
with live acts on most Saturday nights. Biggin's
favourite crooner "Karaoke Dave" Griffiths also
provided great fun on one evening and we have
even had spontaneous performances by folk
singers who have stayed on our campsite! As
always, a big thank you to everyone who has come
along to support these events. Still to come this
year: 27th Oct - Carolanne B - Halloween Fancy
Dress; 1st Dec - Lance Merlin (Country Music)
New Year’s Eve - Ian McKenzie. We are hosting 3
different Darts & Dominoes Teams. Ladies on
Tuesday evenings and 2 on Friday evenings. If
you would like to get involved in any of these, just
let Landlady Debs know. Best wishes to all, Debs
& Steve Thomas

Do you have any photographs of the men named
on the war memorial? Please could St Thomas's
have a copy? Also any other information or

November for a week. There will be refreshments
available on the 10th of November. The

Biggin WI- August -Our visit to the World of
Wedgewood included a tour of the factory seeing,
followed by lunch served on beautiful china and
then we looked around the museum covering an
amazing collection from the 18th century to the
present-day. We all found something to admire
and one or two of us found a bargain in the factory
shop. September - This month saw a return of a
favourite speaker to our WI- he talked about the
great fire of London in 1666 from a forensic point
of view using old records from the time. How it
began and how people reacted to the fire some
running away while others tried to put out the
fire. The Christmas card competition was won by
Penny who had drawn a lovely festive sheep.
Biggin C of E Primary School - The Autumn
term is already three weeks old and the children
have settled really quickly after the long summer
break back into their learning. We warmly
welcome Miss Sneddon who has relocated from
Scotland to join us in Key Stage 2. She has made
a fantastic start. Children have already completed
a wonderful topic on Roald Dahl culminating in
the whole school enjoying ‘Dahlicious Dressing-
Up Day’ with science, film-making and cooking
activities and a party to finish the day’s
celebrations.
This week our fabulous Year 6 children joined lots
of pupils from other school to enjoy outdoor
adventures at White Hall, despite the weather!
We have enjoyed hearing about the exciting time
they had and we’re especially proud of their
behaviour and the way they all rose to the
challenge.
On a personal note I would like to say a massive
‘Thank You’ for the support of Mrs Gosney and
the whole of the staff team and the governors for
helping me as I join Biggin School. Everyone has
made me feel so welcome. Teresa Nicholls

EARL STERNDALE NEWS
After the lovely weather of the summer, we
were not blessed with good weather for the Flower
Festival, which didn’t help with the number of
visitors, as these were down on previous years. A
balance sheet will be available soon. There are so
many “thank you’s” to all who helped with the
flower festival, the flower arrangers, the bakers, the
helpers in Church; to Mr Bagshaw for putting the
roadside boards out and collecting them in again
and everyone who helped in any way. Thank You
…The poster competition, which the school
children take part in, was won this year by, Adele
Sweetmore, who received a voucher. Thank you to
the school who again, did the printing of the
posters and the handout sheets in Church. The
posters went far and wide, advertising this event.
The raffle prize winners were-1. Hamper, Barbara
Hodgkinson. 2. White wine, Carol Gratton 26922.
3. Sparkling Wine, Kate. 4. Tapestry Cushion, Mary
Wheeldon. 5. Biscuits, Beryl Hodgkinson. 6. Rum,
Mrs Marchington. 7. Whiskey, Margaret Lampard.
8. Candles, Brenda Wheeldon. 9. Garden Set,
Simon Perkins. 10. Bottle Pimms, Richard
Bagshaw.
We say a big thank you to the Riley family for their
generous donation, in memory of Dorothy. A
public meeting was held in the Church on
Wednesday 4th July and 2 new members came
forward to become Church Wardens. A re-opening
service has been arranged for 21st Oct. at 3.00 pm,
this will also be the Harvest Service. The school
children will have their Harvest Service on Friday
19th October and the sale of produce will be held on
Monday 22nd October at 7.30 pm in Church.
As a retiring Church Warden of many, many
years, I would like to say a big thank you to the
precious group of friends and colleagues, who have
helped me during these years. The Flower Festival,
of 30 years this year, takes a lot of ‘hands’ and a lot
of time and I am most grateful to those who have
helped to put on the brilliant displays and helped
me with the festival over these years. Also with the
many fundraising events, to keep our Church
going.
Over the years Jen Mellor and I have worked
tirelessly, applying for grants and raising money
for the improvements to the building, firstly the
installation of a central heating system, next saw
re-wiring and new lights and then the addition of
toilet facilities, making it better for events to take
place. Some of the pews were removed some years
ago and the font was to be re-sited, but this is a
project ‘ongoing’. I would like to say a big thank
you to Jen, who has had to take on extra, since I
have been out of commission.
I would also like to say a big thank you to my
family, who have helped me a lot, especially these
last few years, as my mobility has proven a
problem. We look forward to progress in the
future with the new Church Wardens and
Committee and wish them well. Mary Wheeldon

Earl Sterndale School - Towards the end of the
summer term, our school production of Charlie
and the Chocolate Factory was fabulous! The
children performed beautifully and we didn’t
forget too many lines!! Also, our Leavers’ Party /
End of Year Party was brilliant too. The rain didn’t
put us off and everyone had a great time. The ball
race was a super-soggy success!! The children have
made a super start back after the Summer holidays.
We welcomed our new Reception children and the
Y3 children made the big step up to the Junior
class, which is always quite daunting and a little bit
scary. Events this term include our Harvest
Festival which is coming soon in mid-October. The
children have begun the preparations already. We
also have our Climbing Wall Festival later this
week.
Alstonefield and District Friendship Club
There are two more interesting meetings left this
year! Firstly, Doug Pickford is coming to talk to us
on ‘Magic, Myth and Memory of the Moorlands’ on
Wednesday 10th October at 2.30pm in Alstonefield
village hall. Then Richard and Joyce Odell will be
talking to us about their ‘Life and Work in Nepal’
on Wednesday 24th October, same time, same
place. Both meetings will include lovely home-
made afternoon tea, the second of them including
scones with jam and cream! There will also be the
usual grocery raffle and a bring and buy table. The
tea costs £5 and all are welcome to join us. Car
transport can be provided from several villages.
Our Christmas Shopping Trip this year will again
be to Burton, because everyone agrees it is the best
place to go for shopping, especially as it is mostly
under cover! It will be on Wednesday 14th
November and the coach can pick up from several
villages – the cost of the coach is £6.
The Christmas Lunch on 5th December will again
be at the Bentley Brook Hotel, and the food is
lovely. This is free to members, but others are
welcome to join us at their own expense. For more
information, or to book your place on the coach for
the outing, or for the Christmas Lunch, at least a
week in advance, please ring Lorraine on 01335

A FOND FAREWELL
After 32 very happy years at Hartington, and 42 years working in the NHS, I have made the decision
that it is now time for me to retire from General Practice.
It has been a privilege to have been welcomed into the lives of so many people and their families;
watching babies and children grow and sharing both happy, and sad, times together over the years.
These are truly special memories that I will treasure forever, so ‘thank you’ to so many of you for
giving me the opportunity to do so.
I plan to retire as a Partner in August and will be replaced by Dr Ashley Dawson who, most of you will
remember, worked at our surgery as a locum GP several years ago. He will be joining Dr Graham Hurst
as a Partner, and we are very much looking forward to welcoming him into our fantastic Health Care
Team at Hartington Surgery. I wish him, and his team, all the very best for a long and successful career
as he takes the Practice forward into the future.
I wish everyone good health, peace and happiness; I am sure that I will be seeing many of you out
there in the beautiful Peak District, hopefully for many more years to come.
