The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all of us. The effect on TRG has been substantial, and our plans for 2020 have been revised. Our 2020 annual reunion has been postponed, and we continue to hope that it can be held in the fall. Meet and Greets have been suspended for the time being as businesses try to open in a new normal. Social distancing is the norm, not that our greyhounds know what that is; many of our furbabies miss and long for the petting and love that they received from strangers. When COVID-19 caused states to take action and close businesses, the world of greyhound racing came to a halt. With racing in the state of Florida scheduled to end at the close of 2020, many tracks closed permanently at an earlier date than expected. This left many greyhounds in limbo without knowing if/when racing would return to Florida. Beginning in mid-March, TRG worked with GPA Tampa Bay, and arranged for transport of greyhounds into our adoption program. Through the generous support from our holiday campaign plus our emergency appeal to move Florida greyhounds, TRG helped move 50 greyhounds from Florida, and placed 19 greyhounds into forever homes with TRG adopters. The remaining greyhounds from the transports moved on to several other adoption groups. At this time, The TRG board believes it is prudent to take a hiatus from the placement of new greyhounds. With the reality of the ‘new normal’ still evolving and certain populations still at risk for COVID-19, we feel it is in the best interest of everyone to be ‘on hold’ until September. Thank you to all who have supported the greyhounds, whether through adoption of a hound, volunteering of your time, or by making a donation. We will continue to keep you updated as we move forward. A Different World

A lot has happened in the 6 months since our last newsletter for both greyhounds and the adoption community.

Greyhounds have the ability to inspire and

console, amuse and mystify, and above all, give the

rarest commodity, unconditional love.

Should you be so lucky as to share your home and heart

with one, you will never regret it.

‘You’ve Nailed It’ Keeping your greyhound’s nails in top condition

With the COVID-19 restrictions in effect during late winter and the spring months, everyone including our beloved hounds had to forego certain activities. This may have included getting your pets’ nails trimmed and kept at the proper length. Now is the time to get back on track and get your hounds in tip-top shape during the summer when a lot of walking occurs. Ideally, your dog’s nails should be trimmed (or dremeled) once every 4-6 weeks. Overly long nails on a dog’s feet may cause them to walk differently, placing their weight improperly, or dragging them on hard surfaces. This can cause pain to your greyhound.

The photo above illustrates the ideal length of a dog’s nails and also the angle at which to trim the nails if you attempt to do this on your own. An owner’s concern is often the coloring of the nails; a dark nail prevents you from seeing where the ‘quick’ is. Or you may have one of those hounds that does not want you to touch its feet. If that is the case, making an appointment with a groomer or your veterinarian to give a ‘paw’dicure is often the best solution. Remember, just like we need a manicure or pedicure, so does your greyhound. They are walking on their feet constantly, and their nails need to allow them to do it without an issue.
