Bellevue Fall and Holiday Events Whether you’re new to Bellevue or you’re an established resident, it’s impossible to keep up with all the fun, exciting things that happen in this area as the year comes to a close. Fortunately, www.Bellevue.com exists with its great Halloween and Holiday guide pages which list activities for people of all ages. The site also has valuable information about local dining and nightlife, food trucks, shopping, real estate, and events throughout the year.

The President’s Message Heidi Dean Dear Newport Hills Neighbors: Thank you for another year of friendship and support while I served my second term as NHCC president. This volunteer position has changed my life for the better in so many ways. At this point I’m ready to hand over the reins to Sean Bentley. I’m excited to see where he takes the club in 2015. I will still be involved as Past President, as well as the liaison to the shopping center property owners and NH businesses. My focus will be to create a vibrant business district in our neighborhood through whatever means possible. At some point I may need to call upon you for your support. I hope you will answer that call.

Change is inevitable. We’re seeing rapid change in Newport Hills, from our resident demographics, to our schools, to the way the NHCC operates. In most cases fighting change is futile and a waste of energy. The truth is, change is what we make of it. Will you look for the silver lining and do what you can to take the inevitable changes in a positive direction? Newport Hills is also what we make of it. We can choose to be a very large collection of disconnected households or we can choose to be a connected, cohesive group working together for the common good. This past year I’ve heard a lot about people coming together at the block level - keep it up! Connecting with your neighbors is one of the best ways to ensure your safety and to feel satisfied in your life. I also want to point out that it takes a village to run the NHCC. There are many ways, large and small, to contribute to the neighborhood by volunteering for the club. Don’t be shy, don’t assume you don’t have skills or talents to offer, don’t assume someone else will do it if you don’t. We all have something to offer and volunteering with the NHCC is one of the best ways to get to know people near and far in the neighborhood (true story!). So, whether you’re an established resident or brand spankin’ new to Newport Hills, the NHCC NEEDS YOU! Finally, remember these words: Community Starts at the Block Level. Thank you, Newport Hills! Santa Tour Michelle Hilhorst, Santa Tour Coordinator We received word that Santa is coming to Newport Hills on Saturday, December 13! Led by a Bellevue Fire Engine, he will ride

through Newport Hills, distributing oranges and candy canes to people of all ages! His tour begins at 9:00AM and will end at the Newport Hills Shopping Center at 1:00PM. Santa announces his presence with a very loud siren! Canned Food Drive! Santa will be collecting canned food along the way for our neighbors in need. For everyone’s safety, we ask that no one climb on to Santa’s sleigh. You may take photos next to the sleigh along the route. Thank you for understanding our desire for a fun and safe tour! Sponsored by Newport Hills Community Club and our local Merchants. Support them all! For a map of Santa’s tour route, please visit our site at http://www.newporthillscommunityclub.org/blog/wp-

admin/images/SantaTour.jpg. With the retiring of our Santa Chair (Michelle Hilhorst) after ten years of service, we are looking for a new Chair to take over in time for the December 2015 event. This is a great event to Chair as a family or as a group of friends. If we do not locate a Chair for next year, this long-loved event will no longer continue. Please consider donating your time to preserve this decades-old tradition. If interested, please contact Michelle at [email protected] for more information. Thank you.

Community Garage Sale Recap

Gorgeous weather and digital upgrades helped make this year’s Community Garage Sale on Saturday, September 6, a success. Over 30 households participated, with garage salers able to customize their shopping through the use of a virtual map with individual sale descriptions. A group site was offered per resident request but was utilized by only two of the requestors. Many thanks to Area 15 Trustee Leah Logan for organizing this fun event!

Activities and Events Survey: What Do Newport Hills Residents Want? On June 13, the NHCC conducted a survey asking for information on the types of events and activities Newport Hills residents would attend and help organize. By the time the survey was closed on July 12 seventy-three people had responded. Here is a list of what you said:

• Tied: Craft fairs and swap meets tied with BBQ festival, chili cook-off, and potlucks • Community movies • Speakers series on a variety of topics • Group hikes, walks, bike rides • Book clubs • Arts and crafts groups and classes • Garden clubs

When asked which activities and events they would be willing to help organize, only 13 people responded positively. Most people indicated they were too busy to help. The respondents who indicated willingness to help said they would like to organize a variety of activities including:

• Cultural conversations group • Arts and crafts groups • Craft fairs and swap meets • A Fathers Day “Touch the Trucks” show • Book clubs • Hikes • A bike safety event

Some folks wanted to help with our annual events and without them, we will have to cut back on those events. Unfortunately, we forgot to ask for respondents’ email addresses and phone numbers! If you are one of those people who wants to pitch in, contact [email protected].

You’ve probably noticed the bright white boulders sitting outside the Cloud 9 Burgers on 119th. Have you spotted the steel leaves sprouting from the new bus shelters nearby? These two elements are part of an ongoing art project initiated by the City of Bellevue along with the participation of a neighborhood committee to enhance our identity and help give our main street something special that is unique to Newport Hills. Artist Bruce Meyers has a studio on Orcas Island but frequently makes the trip to work on his project in our neighborhood. So far he’s installed the bus shelter leaf sculptures, and will be installing a larger “rain tree” feature on the southwest corner of 119th and 58th near Newport Hills Community Church. The large granite boulders will be placed at both shelters and the corner to provide informal seating. The final phase of the project scheduled this fall will feature mosaics on some of the rock faces and landscaping.

Kirk House Update Robin Bentley The Kirk House in Lake Heights was visited the week of October 6 by King County Historic Preservation officer Julie Koler. (An update on this visit will be posted on the website.) Several of us are going before the Parks Commission to talk about why we feel it should be preserved for the neighborhood to enjoy. Coincidentally, 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of this revered northwest architect’s birth and there was a tour of five of his Kirkland houses on October 11. From the Vice President Sean Bentley Hello all, It’s been a busy summer as usual for the Club, what with planning and carrying out the July 4th festivities, two car shows, and last month’s Community Faire. Now the holiday season is racing toward us, and it’s time to start thinking about what could be in store for the Club and the neighborhood as we head into (gasp) 2015. As president-elect, I look forward to working with the new Board (elections coming up October 21!) as well as our friends and neighbors in NH and Lake Heights, to make next year a memorable one. What’s on my mind? Well, I’d love to work with local businesses as well as neighbors to institute more ongoing community events. They don’t have to be huge, just give us more reasons to get to know each other and make NH a vibrant place to gather. I have a vision of transforming our slowly reviving “town square” into something like the small but vibrant piazzas of European towns, where at all hours you can see kids, grandmas, and families all out and about, talking, playing, shopping, people-watching. Our art installation along 119th is one piece of that puzzle...if I were a toddler, I’d love clambering on and between those rocks, especially once we get the colorful stonework tiles installed this fall. I’m exploring the possibilities of film nights, or an open mike and reading series for local musicians and writers (I’m all about the Arts). Plus, our community survey shows that many NH residents are also interested in such events as a neighborhood dog show, a cultural fair. What about a skateboard competition? Of course, as we all found out from this year’s slimmed-down July 4th, the key to having a successful event is having sufficient staff to plan it and carry it off. Too many cooks may spoil the broth, but not enough chefs means the soup stays in the can! The Club is a small organization, and we welcome volunteers of all sorts. For example, if you’re hankering to show off your pooch’s agility skills, perhaps you’d be willing to help put that kind of program together! If you have a certain passion, please contact us! One more upcoming change concerns our meeting schedule: We know that folks often have conflicts during the week, and typically can’t make every one of our monthly meetings. So the Board is currently planning to hold fewer, but bigger and better, meetings in

Page 8: Newport Hills Community Club...Membership – Halfway to Goal Thank you to everyone who responded to our membership drive which kicked off in the Spring 2014 newsletter. To date we

2015 (say, bi-monthly.) We’ll advertise them well in advance and feature special speakers and presentations on topics that will interest more neighbors. Anyway, Happy Halloween, and I hope to see you all for the last few meetings of 2014. If you haven’t paid your annual dues, we’d love to get our numbers up before the end of the year. Community Faire 2014 Robin Bentley Remember how last year’s Faire was cancelled due to terrible storm warnings, thunder, lightning, lashing rain and high winds? Which never happened? Its always better to be safe than sorry. But we were all more than a little disappointed. Flash forward a year to September 13th… With temperatures hovering just under the 90 degree mark, it was a perfectly gorgeous day and this year's Faire went off without a hitch. It was held in front of Stod's, just like the first one four years ago, but at its new location across the street in the old Red Apple space. We filled the large empty lot left by the Chevron’s move over ten years--long ago--with lots of vendors and community information. Now, community information—that sounds kind of boring. How many other things would you rather be doing on one of the last sunny days of summer? The lists of “have to dos” and “want to dos” and “honey-dos” get longer as summer turns to fall, right? According to Robert Putnam, writer of Bowling Alone, community activities are crucial to the life of a neighborhood and the lives of the people who dwell there.

“social networks (also known as ‘social capital’) help translate an "I" mentality into a "we" mentality. When a group of neighbors informally keep an eye on one another's homes, that's social capital in action. Barn-raising on the frontier was social capital in action, and so too are e-mail exchanges among members of a cancer support group. Social capital can be found in friendship networks, neighborhoods, churches, schools, bridge clubs, civic associations, and even bars”

Working to build social capital in Newport Hills is one reason we at NHCC host events like Community Faires and Car Shows. They may seem small and insignificant as we get them started, but they will grow and help bind the community together. That keeps us all safer, healthier, and need I say it, happier? Thank you Sean Bentley for selecting such a great musical line-up, filling the full four hours with live entertainment for the whole family. Thank you also to Debra Haraldson and Heidi Dean for hosting the NHCC membership table for the duration. Several people volunteered to assist us and we’re so grateful for your help, including Stacey and Julie Guinasso, Grayson Bourree, and Karina Kawaguchi. Councilmember Jennifer Robertson spent a long time chatting local food and gardens with me and several other master gardeners, including one

from the longtime Hill n' Dale Garden Club. Several times during the discussion Jennifer told me to come to her to get a community garden built in Newport Hills. When City Hall comes to us to talk about what we want in our community they really listen—the Community Faire is a great place to network. Other things I learned at the Faire:

• It takes more than one person to put up (and take down) a pop-up! • Guitars bring people together in a big way--by the third hour there were at least three different guitars being played in

three different places on the site. • I finally got to put a face to all those NextDoor Newport Hills scribes, and I got a great recommendation for sourcing some

oilcloth from some middle-school girls selling beautiful, reusable lunch bags. • I got to pet the softest bunny in the world. • I learned more about the Girl Scouts' project to build a mini-library on 119th and the new Chinese Immersion School

located in our neighborhood (the old Lake Heights Elementary). • I learned kids (teens) have the energy to bake, put together a table and talk about their cause non-stop for four hours all

while raising hundreds of dollars for their cause (ASPEN at Newport High). And all while making it look like they're just hanging out together.

• Free samples always draw a crowd, and they taste better when they're free, too! The owner of this ice cream truck lives right in our neighborhood, as does the owner of two fabulous cars, which he shared by parking them next to the ice cream truck.

• I met two new yoga teachers in the hood--at the NH Swim and Tennis Club. • I was invited to join a book club and a knitting circle and traded new plants for my garden with lots of free advice on shade

gardening from garden club master gardeners, • And last but not least, I’ve got my Christmas shopping in the bag with the knowledge that I don’t need to look any further

than my crafty neighbors for giving presents to all those on my list. Without ever leaving Newport Hills!

Cool Cars & Fun Times at Cloud 9 Burgers

This summer the NHCC hosted two cruise-ins at the shopping center to support Cloud 9 Burgers and its wonderful owner Yong. The first cruise-in on Saturday, July 13, featured five participants and 10 cars from the neighborhood and beyond. A photo collage of that event can be seen in the Cloud 9 dining room. The second cruise-in on Saturday, August 24, featured 19 participants with 23 cars, of which only four appeared at the previous event. Exhibitors and spectators enjoyed an afternoon of good food, music, neighborly conversation, and collector car enthusiasm. Photos of both events can be seen on the NHCC’s Facebook page and will be added to the website soon. If you’re interested in working on a committee to bring more vehicle-oriented events to the neighborhood, please contact Heidi at [email protected].

“Energize Eastside” PSE Project: Stay Informed Are you just hearing about PSE’s “Energize Eastside” project and don’t know what it’s all about? Go to www.energizeeastside.com for an overview complete with maps. The proposed M route would run through the northeast section of Newport Hills along the pipeline trail where power poles already exist (some inside residents’ backyards). The new proposed poles are 230 KV and much taller and thicker than existing poles. You may also want to check out CENSE (Coalition of Eastside Neighborhoods for Sensible Energy) at

www.cense.org. This group of neighborhood volunteers from Bellevue and beyond are working to challenge PSE’s claims that this proposed project is necessary and the only viable way to keep adequate power flowing to the Eastside past 2017. 2014 4th of July: An Evolution of an Annual Celebration This year’s 4th of July Picnic and Children’s Parade was very different from years past. Planning starts months in advance and because only four people volunteered to help by the April deadline, the event was to be cancelled. The NHCC Executive Board evaluated what could be done with a skeleton crew of volunteers and opted to proceed with the event minus the food service. About 225 people came to the Ringdall track to enjoy the beloved Children’s Parade, complimentary chips and soda, performances by local musicians, field games (including the popular Cherry Pit Spittin’ contest) and a cooling off spray from the engine of BFD Station #9. Many families brought their own picnic and spent time casually visiting with old and new friends. Different doesn’t have to equal bad, as many in attendance said they enjoyed the low-key atmosphere and no one missed waiting in the long food line. What happens in 2015 is up to Newport Hills residents. If you would like to help plan the 2015 event, please contact [email protected]. We would like to extend a hearty “thank you” and recognition to the following:

• Local businesses and organizations Dolce Vita Salon & Nail Spa; Mustard Seed Pub & Grill; Newport Hills Chevron; Bill Pace Fruit & Produce; Dr. Jeff Johnson and staff; Newport Hills Swim & Tennis Club; Newport Hills Community Church

• Henry Huling (Chinook Middle School custodian); R & R Party Rentals; Bellevue School District and Bellevue Parks; Bellevue Fire Station #9 crew
