Newcomers Club of New Bern 2015-2016 Season
Newcomers Club of New Bern
March 2016
www.newbernnewcomers.org
WELCOME,
Our February 10, 2016 New Bern Newcomers guest speaker was Tom Braaten, Director of Coastal Carolina
Regional Airport. Tom is a retired General – USMC and gave us not only the history of our New Bern Airport
but updates on roadways near the airport which will be affected by the future Interstate 70 widening project.
Tom also talked about how he and his wife selected New Bern to live in. The most important reasons were the
friendly and caring people in the New Bern area and their involvement in our community through volunteering.
Ave’ Maria and I plus many others would echo his comments as being some of reasons we also selected to live
in New Bern. Many of us are involved in various organizations that are always in need for volunteers. I and
others on the Board are contacted each month by organizations and Newcomers wanting to address their
volunteer needs to our members in our meetings. While our policy is not to allow this in our General Meetings,
I do use The Presidents letter to direct our Newcomers to different websites for activities/volunteer
opportunities you might want to volunteer for or attend outside of normal Newcomer activities such as Craven
County Clean Sweep being held next on May 7th to help pick up trash in and around New Bern or to volunteer
to work on the New Bern Walk to End Alzheimer’s being held in October of this year. The month of March in
New Bern has many activities outside of Newcomers which many of you would enjoy. See
http://www.newbernnow.com for Mach, 2016-events-in-and-around-New-Bern.
Our next Newcomers meeting will be Wednesday, March 9th
at 7 PM at the Harrison Center at 311 Middle
Street, downtown New Bern.
Please review www.newbernnewcomers.org, the newsletter and activity calendar for the dates and times of
Newcomer activities for the month of March that you may be interested in.
Hope to see you at the March meeting as it will be informative, but also are a great time to socialize with
everyone and meet new members of our community.
Reminder: Newcomers, whose last names begin with F, G, and H, please bring a snack to share at the
meeting. If you are not planning or unable to attend this meeting to bring a snack, please let our Social Chair
know in time for us to make alternative plans if necessary.

Purpose: The Newcomers/Alumni Bicycling Group is for those individuals
who like to get exercise while enjoying the scenery around New Bern. We
feature 'no drop' rides--which means we don't leave anyone behind! We
have been working to design options that allow more serious bikers to
enjoy a longer distance at a faster pace, but also provide a choice for more
leisurely riders to go at a more comfortable pace. We take breaks as
needed. Routes will vary, allowing participants the chance to see different
neighborhoods and the surrounding countryside

The Book Club meets monthly at a member’s home for
conversation about a book, usually fiction selected by
member suggestions. The group leaders spark discussion
with a few comments and questions and the host provides
light refreshments.
We are a group of avid readers who meet most often on the
fourth Thursday of the month from 1-3pm in different
member’s houses to discuss a wide genre of books. The
book list is compiled every six months from suggestions
taken from and voted on by the members of the club. The
books range from mysteries, to beach reads to classics and
more.
We are a group of very diverse people bringing to the table
different morals, values, backgrounds, thus making for a
truly lively discussion. Over light snacks, we learn about
the authors and yes, discuss the books for 1 1/2 hours
approximately.
Driving directions are emailed to all book club members.

The goal is to have fun and meet new people. Bunco is
a simple, no skill, dice game. You sit at a table of four
with a partner across from you; then the partners rotate
as the game continues. So this game is a great way to
meet people in a small group. If you can toss three dice
and recognize the numbers on the dice, then you can
play this game! Each month we have 12 or 16
participants. Each time you participate, the cost is
$5.00 per person with all money paid out as prizes at
the end of that evening (please bring correct change).
Host will provide dessert. Other participants please
bring an appetizer for approx 8-10 people to be shared
PLUS beverage of your choice that you would like to
personally drink that evening. Participants will be
notified by e-mail of the location prior to the event.
Activity is held the 3rd
Wednesday of the month. Advance sign-up is required and is offered at the monthly New
Bern Newcomer meeting. If space is still available after the meeting sign-up, then an email is sent to members
who have expressed interest in Bunco.

Day Trip Reviews
Seymour Johnson Air Force Base--January 28, 2016 Seymour Johnson AFB staff welcomed our group of thirty-one to tour one of the smaller, but one of the most
intense, Air Force bases. Seymour Johnson, in Goldsboro NC, is the training base for the F-15E, the premier
fighter-bomber in the country. The cold, blustery day was warmed by the reception we received from base
personnel.
We first received an informative overview of the history of the Fourth Fighter Wing and their equipment.
14 | P a g e M a r c h 2 0 1 6
(Notably, they were the first ("Fourth is first") to fly the P-51 Mustang.) We then proceeded to a tour of a KC-
135, which is similar to a Boeing 707, but equipped as an in-air refueling tanker. Following lunch at the base
dining hall, we were treated to an up-close examination of an F-15E fighter, led by a group of crew chiefs and
other maintenance staff.
Seymour Johnson is only a little over an hour away, but their fighters and tankers provide coverage for the
entire eastern part of the country and beyond. Our group was inspired by the enthusiasm and dedication of our
hosts. Even the cold couldn't diminish their spirit.

Foscue Plantation House – January 7, 2016 This house, built in 1824, is on property west of New Bern that has been owned by the same family since the
1750's. The current family owner has been restoring and refurnishing the house since 1995, and has found many
of the furniture and objects used by the original inhabitants. The current 1634 acres (down from 10,000) of
family property are still farmed in corn, cotton, soybeans, timber, and tobacco. Our group of just over thirty
enjoyed a guided tour of the house's three floors plus basement. Among the highlights were a family Bible lost
during the Civil War and returned over thirty years later, the secretary used when the original owner served as
Justice of the Peace, a quilt from the early 1800's that is still in use, and a dining table that could expand to seat

twelve. Although modest in size, this was--and is--a grand house, well worth a visit. They're open on Thursdays,
10-5. After our tour, we gathered for lunch at Lawson's Landing Cafe in the North Carolina History Center
(Tryon Palace History Center) for a delicious lunch.
Fort Macon--November 18, 2015 Beautiful weather (just before a rainy cold front) greeted our group of about twenty at Fort Macon, which
guards Beaufort Inlet, across the sound from Morehead City. There has been a fort on the site since the early
1700's, and the current Fort was used in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and the First and Second
17 | P a g e M a r c h 2 0 1 6
World Wars; it is now a State Park.
Following an informative and entertaining history--and musket-firing--presentation, we were able to tour
exhibits of features of life in the Fort at different times in its history. It's not surprising, considering its scale, to
hear that 9.4 million bricks were required to build the Fort. The history is fascinating, the facilities are first-rate,
and the setting is spectacular.
After our visit, about half the group gathered at Snapperz Grill in Morehead City for lunch. Shrimp and sausage
quesadillas, fresh grouper, and a steamer pot were among our choices, but the best part was the company.
For more pictures please click Fort Macon
Sylvan Heights Bird Park--October 22,
2015. About thirty of us made the scenic back roads
drive to the small town of Scotland Neck, home of the
Sylvan Heights Bird Park. Originally established (and
still run) as a breeding for endangered waterfowl from
around the world, it now includes an extensive bird park
that includes ponds, cages, and walk-in aviaries for birds
from Africa, Australia, North and South America, and
Eurasia.
Although the focus is on waterfowl, many terrestrial
birds are included. Some of the more memorable species
seen included flamingoes, parakeets, and cranes (all
three of which took feed from our hands), kookaburra,
toucan, emu, eagle hawk, and white-headed ducks from
Southeast Asia. These last are perhaps the stars of the park, since they are virtually extinct in the wild but are
thriving here.
Hard to fathom that this world-class facility is in little Scotland Neck, North Carolina. But it is.
After the park, we topped off our visit with a leisurely, Italian-style lunch at La Casetta, an Italian restaurant in
Scotland Neck (and sister restaurant to La Casetta on Neuse Boulevard in New Bern). The food was wonderful,
but the conversation and company was even better.
For pictures please click Sylvan Heights
Washington Estuarium and River Roving--September 24 & October 9, 2015 Washington is where the Tar River (freshwater) and the Pamlico Sound (saltwater) meet, to form an estuary
(brackish water). The Estuarium spotlights the features of this important ecosystem.
Due to high demand, this daytrip was run twice. Each day, we split into two groups, with the first group touring
the Estuarium, then going on the pontoon boat excursion after lunch (the second group reversed the order).
18 | P a g e M a r c h 2 0 1 6
Highlights of the Estuarium included the dynamic water-cycle sculpture in the lobby, the serene orientation
film, and various exhibits.
The pontoon boat ride went downstream past the railroad bridge into the Pamlico, then turned upstream into the
Tar River. We passed under the highway drawbridge and the "new" freeway bridge before moving up Bear
Creek, one of the tributaries. Although none of the groups saw much wildlife, the weather was gorgeous and we
thoroughly enjoyed the sights.
We split into smaller groups for lunch in downtown Washington, and some folks stayed after the tour to explore
more of this historic river port.
Dining-In is scheduled from January - April each year. Dining-In dinners are limited to 4 couples or 8
participants who meet in the hosting participant's home. Everyone shares in the preparation by
providing a designation course for the dinner. It is a great way to meet other Newcomers and enjoy a
delicious meal.
There are several sets of 4 couples in the Dining-In activity. Each Dining-In session mixes which 4
couples are gathering at the host's house. Each month you are sitting down at the table with a different
group of couples in the activity. Each couple gets the opportunity to host one dinner. Once again,
hosting is spread evenly over the participants. This way you get to meet several Newcomers over the
Dining-In season. It is a lot of fun and you should give it a try.
If you have not participated in Dining-In previously, I urge you to give it a try. It is a great way to
meet people in a smaller setting, make lasting friendships, and have a lot of fun. This year we had 48
participants and 12 alternates that helped make this a “favorite” activity of the Newcomers..
We have heard many terrific stories from this year's participants and are looking forward to the next
dinner!! If you are interested in learning more about the group, please contact the activity leader for
more information or inquire at the monthly meeting.

Dinning In Reviews:
At John and Julie's--January 9th
, 2016
Joining hosts John and Julie Cox were Bob and Carolyn Scott, Steve and Crystal Lawrence, and Bruce and
Linda Lord. Dinner started out with an appetizer filled with an assortment of meats and cheeses, followed by the
entrée which included roast beef and vegetables, a crisp salad, and French bread. Homemade brownies topped
with a mint frosting and chocolate sauce completed the meal. Wine was the drink of choice followed later by
coffee. The conversation was lively and fun and topics ranged from what brought us all to New Bern to what
kind of cars we all used to drive which brought out quite a bit of jokes and memories. At the end of the evening
we promised to get together again soon and the four women made plans for a shopping trip.

Newcomers / Alumni Golf is based on the premise that the game should be fun. Making friends is
paramount; proficiency is immaterial. We welcome all skill levels. Rules are what each player wants
them to be. Some players adhere to the stricter rules of the USGA, while others follow the lax GW
rules -- count every stroke that you like. If you don’t like it, don’t count it; or finally, don’t count
anything and pick up your ball any time you wish!
We schedule a golf outing once a month, normally on a Wednesday or Thursday, and play 12 months
of the year. We travel to courses in the New Bern area and try to keep within a one-hour drive. We also
arrange carpooling for the out-of-New Bern trips. If this sounds like something you would enjoy, come
join us. You will have a good time! For additional information or reservations, contact:

Throughout the September – May season, we try to choose outdoor activities that are appealing to
everyone. The adventures are not competitive in nature. The adventures have included: kayaking/
canoeing, hiking, kite flying, bicycle riding, and boat rides. We either bring our lunch or stop by a
nearby restaurant.
We don’t have participants sign up unless it is an activity that must be more stringent in head count.
Our slogan is “No sign-up, just show up at the event,” and rain-out is constituted by already raining

The Wine Social Group is for everyone, not just wine drinkers! Each
couple/single who signs up is asked to bring a bottle of wine, or
whatever they would like to drink, and an hors d'oeuvre to share with
everyone.
Hosting a party is easy! Wine Socials are held on the third Saturday of each month. The activity chairman will:
Notify everyone who signed up at the General Meeting by email of the date
Receives the RSVPs of those that plan on attending
Brings the wine glasses to the host's home
Supplies the name tags.

The party attendees bring the food and beverages—the host supplies the house! If you would like to limit the
party to a certain number of people, just notify the activity leader.
The Wine Social activity is open to all members of the Newcomers Club of New Bern and their guest.
Come join us for food, drink, and friendship no knowledge of wine is required!
