Purpose: The Newcomers/Alumni Bicycling Group is forthose individuals who like to get exercise while enjoying thescenery around New Bern. We feature 'no drop' rides--which means we don't leave anyone behind! We have beenworking to design options that allow more serious bikers to enjoy a longer distance at a faster pace, but also provide a choice for more leisurely riders to go at a more comfortablepace. We take breaks as needed. Routes will vary, allowing participants the chance to see different neighborhoods and the surrounding countryside

Requested Gear:

1. A working bicycle (brakes, gears) with adequate safety items - lights, reflectors

2. A Helmet is mandatory.

3. Carry adequate water (minimum – 1 pt. / 500 ml).

4. Casual clothing (shorts) and top with bright colors.

Air pumps and/or lights are an option.

Meeting Place:

A group email, including directions to a starting point, is sent out for weekend rides.

We would love to have you join us!

Dave Gerde 252-288-4371 631-759-6412 [email protected]

Scheduled Events:

The activity leaders check the weather and weigh other factors as to when an event can be scheduled. Due to these factors, events are scheduled with short time frames (within 1 to 2 weeks.) So have your helmet ready!

On October 16th we had 8 make the ride--and 3 came for the first time. We rode through downtown and Trent woods. Beautiful day, and everyone present had a great time. We'll continue to ride as long as weather allows.

If anyone wants to be notified of rides, they can email Keith at [email protected]. Dave Gerde will be gone over the summer, so Keith will likely be the only one scheduling rides.

The Boaters Group held its annual summer picnic at Jon & Jane Olstad's house in Greenbrier. We had a great turnout for the picnic.

We are in the process of planning our proposed Agenda for the 2016-2017 Boating Season with many exciting events being looked into. We hope to have a good mix of boating activities, a couple of overnight land cruises as well as a number of interesting day trips to visit area attractions tied in with some visits to area restaurants. In addition to these activities we are going to try and schedule a couple educational talks dealing with boating in local waters and other boating topics of interest

You must be a member of the Boater’s Group to participate in Group activities and you must be a member of either the AGN or Newcomers Club to be a member of the Boaters Group.

Due Reminder for 2017: $15/Couple or $10 for singles. Please mail your check, made out to Newcomers Boaters Group. Mail check to:

7th Annual Summer Solstice Shallow-Draft Boat Cruise

CAPE LOOKOUT NATIONAL SEASHORE “Inside” RouteWednesday, June 21, 2017

Depart from Beaufort City Docks, 1030 Karl Lichty,Cruise Leader – Invited Clubs:

• One-day “inside” cruise to Cape Lookout(shallowest anticipated water, 3 ft.)

• Wade to shore, enjoy the beach inside theCape and bring a picnic! Our anticipated

• destination is the end of the spit at theBeaufort Inlet.

• Depart mid-afternoon and consider ice cream(wine?) at the Beaufort dock!

• Launch Options – Wildlife Ramps

• Join the LuSea at the Oriental Wildlife Ramp 0900.

• Radio Island, Morehead City

• Town Creek, Beaufort

• Boats will rendezvous at the Beaufort City Docks, 1030. Hail the “Cape Lookout

Adventurers” on Channel 16, then switch to 71.

This is a very fun day! Boats will head towards the Beaufort inlet, follow Shackelford Island, cut across to Harkers Island and follow the aids to navigation to Cape Lookout. We will be going through some shallow waters, so prudent mariners will stay in the channel and consider carrying a push pole or poling oar due to ever-changing shoals. A second “picnic” anchor is beneficial at the Cape to keep stern to shore (Med-style). If you plan to join us, e-mail [email protected] or call (805) 451-8984. Include e-mail, cell number and boat description so we can be on the lookout for you. The cruise is subject to weather cancellation, so check e- mails by Monday morning 0800. See you on the water!

Each year, the timing of the Solstice depends on when the sun reaches its farthest point north of the equator. This occurs annually on June 20or June 21 in North America, depending on your time zone. The word Solstice is from the Latin solstitium, from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop), reflecting the fact that the sun appears to stop at this moment (and again at the winter solstice).

Hope you will join us for a fun and memorable day!Karl Lichty

Dining Out is an opportunity to enjoy learning about the restaurants in New Bern and the surrounding areas. It’s a chance to taste the chef’s choice and enjoy the company of other alumni. Each month a new place is planned for your dining pleasure for either lunch or dinner.

For the next few months, Brian Leonard will be taking over for Mark.

The AGN Dining Out activity group meets monthly. We try to sample a variety of cuisines with a range of prices (nothing too expensive). Depending on the location, there may be a group size limit; sign up early! Each monthly event requires an RSVP via email to Brian.

This activity is probably one of the most attended by our members and is a fun group to participate in if you like exploring new places to dine in the area. It frequently ventured out of the immediate New Bern area to Washington, Morehead City, Swansboro, and Kin-ston.

Newcomers / Alumni Golf is based on the premise that the game should be fun. Making friends is paramount; proficiency is immaterial. We welcome all skill levels. Rules are what each player wants them to be. Some players adhere to the stricter rules of the USGA, while others follow the lax GW rules -- count every stroke that you like. If you don’t like it, don’t count it; or finally, don’t count anything and pick up your ball any time you wish!

We schedule a golf outing once a month, normally on a Wednesday or Thursday, and play 12 months of the year. We travel to courses in the New Bern area and tryto keep within a one-hour drive. We also arrange carpooling for the out-of-New Bern trips. If this sounds like something you would enjoy, come join us. You will have a good time!

Mexican Train Dominoes

Activity Leaders Home Cell EmailTerri Watts 252-288-4303 [email protected]

Esther Wilson 252-288-6715 [email protected]

The goal is to have fun while playing Mexican Train Dominoes. Dominoes are a simple, easy to learn game played by people of all ages for centuries. You sit at a table of 6; you do not play with partners. The object of the game is to be the first player to place all of their dominoes. Dominoes may be placed onto the player's train, onto the Mexican train if available, or on the trains of other players under special circumstances. This game is a great way to socialize in a small group. Weare seeking a total of 18 players, divided into groups of six to play at one of the three Hosts’ houses. This event is patterned after the “Dining In” concept. By participating, you agree to host at least one game night. After all have signed up, asimplified matrix, modified from the “Dining In” matrix, will be distributed, to assign the Hosts and guests for each game night. The Host will provide a dessert (and a table for six players). The other players will bring an appetizer or snacks to be shared, PLUS any beverage that you would like to drink that evening.

Participants will be notified by e-mail of the location prior to the event. Activity is held the 3rd Thursday of the month and will start at 7:00 pm. Advance sign-up or show of interest by e-mail is required.

To sign up for Mexican Train Dominoes or to indicate interest in future Dominoes events, contact the Activity Leader by e-mail or phone.

Throughout the September – May season, we try to choose outdoor activities that are appealing to everyone. The adventures are not competitive in nature. The adventures have included: kayaking/ canoeing, hiking, kite flying, bicycle riding, and boat rides. We either bring our lunch or stop by a nearby restaurant.

We don’t have participants sign up unless it is an activity that must be more stringent in head count. Our slogan is “No sign-up, just show up at the event” and rain-out is constituted by already raining or bad outlook during the time of the adventure.

SIP & SNACKActivity Leaders Home Cell EmailJane Olstad 252-514-0634 [email protected]

Looking for a casual night with friends? Sign up for Sip & Snack!

If you like to visit with friends while sharing food and drink, join fellow alums for Sip & Snack. This event will be the third Friday of each month at an alumni's house at 6 pm. Attendees will bring an appetizer or dessert to share, plus whatever they want to drink.

If you would like to be automatically notified about each month's location, please email Jane Olstad to register with the activity. At the beginning of each month Jane will send outan email to those registered, and you can RSVP to the host (identified in Jane's email) to reserve your participation. The number of participants will typically be limited.

Jane needs volunteers to host the July 21st planned Sip & Snack events. The summer months are particularly nice because you can often use the back decks to have a great social gathering. The attendees are smaller because people are out vacationing. We can't continue Sip & Snack if people don't offer to host.

Scheduled Events:

A Sip & Snack is scheduled for June 16th at 6:00 pm. Jane is looking for hosts in the winter/spring period of 2017. If you would like to host any month in 2017 please contact Jane.

Come join the fun!
