M uch of the terrifying brilliance that emanated from Tobe Hooper’s seminal scream-fest
‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ was that much, if not all, of the violence in the film was only hinted at – leaving much of the horror to the fertile imagination of the audience.
Instead, what we are presented with here is an uninspired slice of cinematic dreck that has all of the overt gruesomeness of Eli Roth’s ‘Hostel’ but none of the style and certainly none of the tension that was so expertly built up by Hooper in the original.
Years after the original massacre a young girl, Heather, discovers that she has inherited a sprawling Texas estate from an unknown grandmother. To claim her estate, Heather goes on a road trip with her friends but soon discovers the horror that waits in the cellar of her new mansion. If you’re after a real scare, I implore you to check out the original.
If musical plaudits were handed out on the basis of band name alone, then Melbourne’s King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
would be sitting at the top of the tree. However, (supposedly) these things are decided by things like musicianship and songwriting ability so does this band’s latest album match the brilliance of their name? Well, yes. Yes it does. In spades.
‘Float Along – Fill Your Lungs’ is one hell of an ambitious record that still showcases the band’s fuzzed out 13 Floor Elevators-esque brand of psych, but take things to a whole new level with lashings of sitars, synths, soul and jangly pop to make this one of the most interesting Aussie albums this reviewer has heard in some time.
Stand outs include the 15-minute epic opener ‘Head On/Pill’ and the dreamy ‘I’m Not A Man Unless I Have A Woman’.

F rom the pages of graphic novelist Frank Miller’s (‘300’) greatest work, comes this stylish, yet brutishly violent

Taking a slice from the graphic novel series, ‘Sin City’ consists of four tales that focus around a muscular brute, Marv (Mickey Rourke), who’s looking for the people responsible for the death of his beloved Goldie, a hitman (Josh Hartnett) looking to make a bit of extra cash, a cop (Bruce Willis) who risks his life to protect a girl from a deformed pedophile and a man (Clive Owen) fed up with Sin City’s corrupt law enforcement who takes the law into his own hands after a horrible mistake.
Visceral and highly original, this pulp-inspired neo-noir is not for the faint of heart but if you have the stomach for such fare, you will be rewarded.

They say for every one band that makes it in the music industry there are hundreds that don’t.
Riding the wave of anglomania that inundated the music scene in the early years of the new millennium, brought about by the meteoric rise of British indie-rock acts and NME darlings like the Kooks, Bloc Party, and the Arctic Monkeys, Wakefield band of brothers, the Cribs, not only managed to break through with their bona fide indie anthem ‘Hey Scenesters!’ back in 2005, this month the Jarman brothers, Gary, Ryan and Ross, will celebrate a decade on the road with a string of shows across the country, including an appearance at the Small Ballroom.
“Back then, I honestly couldn’t have imagine being on that stage 10 years on,” bassist and vocalist, Gary Jarman told TE.
“I’m really sort of equally amazed
and horrified that I have found myself in this position. “When we first started in 2002, the intention was just to try and basically escape our hometown and see the world a bit and just play shows and that seemed really amazing to us.
“Then a couple of years later lots of British bands were getting signed and signing to major labels and having massive hits and huge success and it was really a game changer for us.
“We never really had any aspirations of crossover success but then a lot of other bands were having it and it started to become expected of a band like us... and then we were expected to maintain it which was weird for us.”
Whilst a long relationship with London independent, Wichita Records, has undoubtedly allowed the band (usually a three-piece apart from a brief appearance by legendary guitarist from the Smiths, Johnny Marr, on ‘Ignore the Ignorant’) much more creative freedom than they would have enjoyed on a major label, Jarman’s greatest achievement is looking back on ten years of music without regret.

“I’m really honoured and totally mind-blown that we managed to release five records and have never done something we didn’t want to do.
“We’ve never had any pressure from anyone to make a certain kind of record or do a certain kind of thing.
“That is one of the nice things about an anniversary, getting to look back and say ‘Oh yeah, it’s actually been a decade of being able to what we want.”
And after a 10 years touring with the Cribs, what advice does Jarman have
for up-and-coming bands?“Buy a van!”“We’ve done so many tours where
people have told us it isn’t viable and we’ve just got in the van and done it.
“It gives you so much more control, it helps you to make more money, you can talk about what your plans are and upcoming shows – I’d strongly advise any band just starting out to buy a van.”

A fter exceeding all expectations, including her own, with her stark, raw and emotive self-titled debut album, Magic Dirt
front-woman Adalita Srsen has ramped things up with album number two – ‘All Day Venus’- a slab that still burns with the same emotional intensity and candour as the debut, but is tempered with a much rockier edge.
While the album features a full band, the project was very much Srsen’s vision with the singer-songwriter composing all parts before entering the studio.
“It was quite a long process of about two years writing all the songs and composing all the parts,” she said.
“Then, at the end of those two years, I decided that I really wanted a band on this album so, I started auditioning people.”
The result of those auditions was more than fruitful, with Srsen recruiting the likes of ex-Paradise Motel bass player Matt Bailey, a formidable triumvirate of drummers in The Dirty Three’s Jim White, Hugo Cran from the Devistations, and Lee Parker from Melbourne underground rockers Spite House.
“It was a really intense period of recording and mixing,” she said.
“”I actually threw everyone in the studio one by one – I don’t think there was a time where any of them were in there at the same time.”
To add to this already formidable cast of characters, Srsen enlisted the services of long-time Magic Dirt collaborator Lindsay Gravina to oversee production duties.
“We have such a great working relationship – has been working with me since the early Magic Dirt days so he knows where I’m coming from really well – there was a very simpatico vibe that was running through the sessions.”
Given the success of ‘Adalita’, something Srsen herself was surprised by, she said there was a sense of living up to the first album while recording ‘All Day Venus’, but it was something that never affected the integrity of the songs.
“I probably would’ve stopped doing the solo thing at some point if the first album didn’t do well, and there definitely was that first record pressure for a few moments, but I guess it was more of an awareness, not something that ever really took over.”

T he Beasts of Bourbon. The Cruel Sea. Tex, Don and Charlie. The Ladyboyz. The Man in Black. No one could
accuse the irrepressible Tex Perkins of painting himself into a musical corner.
In keeping with this musical wanderlust, Perkins is back with a vengeance with his new band of heavy friends – The Ape (Perkins on guitar and vocals, Magic Dirt’s Raul Sanchez on guitar, the Dark Horses’ Gus Agars on drums and the Ladyboyz’ Pat Bourke on bass and piano) and the result is a blistering self-titles slab of swampy, knuckle dragging rock and roll that is a heady amalgam of the swagger of the Beasts of Bourbon and the inherent

cool of The Cruel Sea, but that’s not to say this band is a pastiche of Perkins’ past glories – this is all Ape all of the time.
Perkins told TE that The Ape was formed as an outlet for a bunch of songs that he had been working on that didn’t fit the framework of his other outfits.
“I started writing these things that didn’t really have a home,” he said.
“It was basically just me and a trashy guitar belting out riffs over hip-hop drum loops and a real juxtaposition of styles, but definitely not right for the Beasts, Cruel Sea or the Ladyboyz. These songs and riffs just kept piling up and piling up and I got to a point where I had this steaming pile of Ape songs cluttering up my house and the rest as they say is history.”
Given not only Perkins’ musical pedigree, but also that of his bandmates, he said while there has been an air of expectation surrounding The Ape, he said he relished in meeting and exceeding punters expectations when the band hits the stage.
“Our first show was at the Cherry Bar in Melbourne and I distinctly remember there being this attitude in the crowd – you know, like a lot of folded arms and “let’s see how good you are” faces,” he said. “It was pretty cool after we’d played a few songs to see those faces chance to, like “aww that’s actually pretty good” faces.”
Despite all of his musical hats (especially with both the Beasts and Cruel Sea embarking on tours this year) Perkins reiterated that the Ape was here to stay, not just some musical flash in the pan.
“The Ape is really my only true creative outlet at the moment and while I’ve been really happy to revisit all that Beasts and Cruel Sea stuff, the Ape is what makes it, I guess, bearable because I don’t feel like I’m just a revisionist – I’m still creating.”

H aving first put pen to paper while sitting at his parent’s piano at the tender age of six, 29-year-old Tasmanian singer-
songwriter Pete Cornelius has packed quite a bit into his 20-plus year musical journey.
From releasing his first album, Steppin’ Out in Blue at age eleven, to forming his first band, Pete Cornelius and the DeVilles at age 15, not to mention oodles of touring around the country, there isn’t all that much that this songwriter hasn’t accomplished.
Now, Cornelius is hitting the road, once again, in support of his latest album - ‘Groundswell’ which Hunter punters will get to hear up close and personal when Cornelius performs two shows in the region this month.
The album is a beguiling mix of Cornelius’ own compositions – switching effortlessly between soul, rock, R’n’B and funk, with some carefully selected interpretations of songs by the likes of Tom Waits, the Reverend Al Green and Ray LaMontagne.
Cornelius said that the modus operandi for ‘Groundswell’ was to try and capture the energy and aesthetic that he achieves on stage, so the production was a very stripped back and almost overdub-free affair.
“This is the first record I’ve released in
three years and I guess the main focus, this time around was to catch that live vibe,” he said.
“A lot of modern recording tends to be more about crystal clear sound, but I really wanted a much rawer sound that is, in a way truer to what I’m doing onstage.”
Certainly no stranger to the road (Cornelius has toured with the likes of Eugene Hidaway Bridges, Eric Bibb and Joe Bonnamassa), Cornelius said that it was all about fininding a connection with his audience in a live setting.
“If my music can make that connection with people, then I’m more than happy.

W ith a steadfast commitment to fun and shenanigans that effortlessly befits their namesake, the Bon Scotts
have emerged from the cold long winter of studio days to reclaim their throne of eccentricity and overlords of musical hijinks.
Their latest single ‘The Weekend Bends’ a rollicking tune that melds the septet’s accordion, mandolin, violin, harp, harmonica, cello, tuba and all manner of percussive curios into something frantic, yet fluid and with all of the fun and tomfoolery that embodies their kinetic live shows.
This is a track that embodies the bands evolution towards capturing the fearless frivolity and unabashed fun of their live show. Recorded in the band’s own studio,
the track is rounded out with one hell of a horn section.
Their sound resplendent, their vibe distinct and their hooks undeniably wicked, these guys take you from the boom of the bass drum to the whisper-like quiver of the violin as you stamp your feet and sing along from go to woah. It’s this interplay of sound and physicality that has placed the Bon Scotts firmly at the vanguard of the folk revival. Their previous albums ‘Oddernity’ and ‘We Will All Die at the Hands of CGI’ commanded respect and attention around the country and earned them support slots with the likes of Tom Fun Orchestra as well as gracing the stages of such festivals as the St Kilda Festival and Port Fairy Folk.

W hen it comes to wah-ed out funkadelic disco guitar licks, there would be few that would sit higher
than Patrick Olive. As one of the sonic architects of the sound of UK disco juggernaut Hot Chocolate, Olive was responsible for genre-defining riffs in such songs as ‘You Sexy Thing’ and ‘Heaven’s in the Backseat of My Cadillac’.Now, Olive will be bringing the band to Newcastle.
“I’m just sitting at home, chilling out with my feet up and sipping on a cognac, taking it easy before we come down there and see you guys,” the super cool Olive told TE.
With nine albums under their belt, Olive admitted that writing a set-list for a show like this can be problematic, but
he assured the Newcastle punters of an all-killer-no-filler set. “We never give the audience a chance to take a breather – it’s a very fun and very full show.”
Hot Chocolate’s first foray into superstardom came in the form of a reggae version of ‘Give Peace a Chance’
Then, under the guidance of super producer Mickie Most, the band began to build a name for themselves with a string of hits including ‘Love Is Life’ and ‘Brother Louie’.
It wasn’t until the advent of disco in the early seventies that Hot Chocolate truly became household names with their sound almost purpose-built for disco fever and before you could say disco ball, they were dominating charts and filling dance floors across the globe.
“I know it may sound a little old fashioned now, but everyone was boogying down – it was an amazing time.

W ith his two latest singles ‘Keep on Running’ and ‘Baby I Am A Nobody Now’ going great guns around the
country, Sydney-based alt-popster Andy Bull couldn’t be happier.
Given that much of the production, and instrumentation was undertaken by Bull himself, he told TE that the reaction the tracks had received meant even more.
“It definitely gratifies that artistic and creative part of you very much” Bull said.
While the tracks (which will feature on Bull’s forthcoming sophomore album) are very much a product of Bull’s expansive creative vision, he enlisted the services of renowned Aussie producer Paul McKercher to undertake mixing duties.
“I wanted to work with Paul purely on the basis of his character,” Bull said.
“Despite everything that he has achieves, he is still so humble and I really admire the may that he never puts himself in the centre of the project - there is zero ego with Paul and he really brought out the best in me on these tracks.”
Bull’s latest single ‘Baby I’m A Nobody Now’, is an impossibly hook-laden and synth-driven pean to self-image in a social media-drenched world.
“It really is a reflection on feeling disconnected,’ he said.
“We live in an age of info streams and everyone is privy to people’s ideal representation of themselves and the character in the song is basically saying that he doesn’t really fit in to this world. He thought he was one in a million but it’s just not the case.”
“I distorted the synths a lot more so they sound really gravelly and driving, like bristling nerves.
