Nickleback are an interesting phenom-enon. They are obviously huge across the globe, yet this reviewer still has trouble finding anyone who will admit to liking Chad Kroeger (the Paddle Pop lion of mod-erate rock) and co.

Regardless, people obviously think enough of them for their record company to deem them worthy of a greatest hits set and if you’re a fan of their middle-of-the-road stylings then this should keep you satisfied. All of the major Nickleback food groups are represented here with such chart slayers as ‘Photograph’, ‘Rockstar’, ‘How You Remind Me’ and ‘Lullaby’ all getting an airing, making this the perfect starting point for anyone interested in finding out more about Nickleback, but for this reviewer it was just 19 tracks that are coloured in different shades of beige. Ignore if you’re a fan of music.

Directed by John Landis (‘An American Werewolf in London’) this riotous comedy could arguably be John Belushi’s finest moment outside of ‘The Blues Brothers’ and is still as hilarious after more than 30 years.

Chock-a-block full of undergraduate humour, ‘Animal House’ still stands as the king of risqué comedies from the late 70s and early 80s that includes the likes of ‘Porky’s’ and ‘Caddyshack’. After watching Belushi’s brilliant turn, you’ll see where Jack Black gets most of his comedic juice.

Directed by Aus-sie scare-meister James Wan, who scared the pants off everyone with ‘Saw’, ‘The

Conjuring’ could arguably be best horror film of the last five years. ‘The Conjuring’ has everything you'd want in a scare-fest - a blissfully ignorant family, a dilapidated farm house, ghost cops and pure evilWhile it doesn’t live up to ‘Amityville Horror’ or other paranor-mal classics, Wan has managed to pack oodles of ten-sion, atmosphere and genuine scares into the script.

If you’re a fan of 80s pop, then you are going to be in hog heaven when one of the queens of the genre, Be-linda Carlisle, hits Sydney alongside homegrown heroes 1927.

Carlisle’s rise to fame began when she stepped onstage with The Go Gos in 1978 who went on to record a swag of hits such as ‘Our Lips are Sealed’ and ‘We Got the Beat’ before disbanding in 1985.

Unbroken, Carlisle embarked on a hugely successful solo career and her second album, ‘Heaven on Earth’ produced the world-wide smash ‘Heaven is a Place on Earth.’

The hits kept coming on the fol-lowing album 1989’s “Runaway Horses” a top 10 album and fea-tured the hit songs “Leave a Light On” and “Summer Rain”. Belinda continued to produce hits includ-ing the 1996 classic “In Too Deep” showing that she has longevity in the pop music scene. The concert will feature a collection of her big-gest and best hits and songs from the past and present.

1-7.12Disability Awareness Week

T he 3rd of December is Interna-tional Day of People with Dis-ability (IDPwD), a dedicated day to place a greater empha-

sis on the abilities and achievements of people living with disability.

Individuals and organisations throughout the country are encour-aged to celebrate the day. This year we celebrate the 21st anniversary of Inter-national Day of Persons with disability.

IDPwD is unique among community awareness days, as it unites disability organisations, businesses, federal, state

and local governments and the commu-nity. The day is a collaborative effort to celebrate and acknowledge the experi-ence and expertise of people with dis-ability.

IDPwD is an opportunity to: celebrate the contributions people with disability make every day to their communities; make a positive contribution to the lives of 4 million of Australians with disabil-ity. IDPwD celebrations also incorporate the National Disability Awards.

The overarching UN theme for IDP-wD in 2013 is: Break barriers and open doors: to realise an inclusive society for all! The former Minister for Disability Reform, Jenny Macklin, and the former Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Carers, Amanda Rishworth have announced the 2013 International Day of People with Disability Patron – Pro-fessor Ron McCallum AO.

I Monday, 2 December Ability Options celebrates International Day of Peo-ple with a Disability at Speers Point Park.

International Day of People with Disabil-ity is a United Nations sanctioned day that aims to promote an understanding of peo-ple with disability and encourage support for their dignity, rights and well-being.

“Ability Options Charlestown is pleased to celebrate with clients and their fami-lies in a fun day with other service pro-viders to promote independence, under-standing and acceptance of people with a disability in order to build stronger con-nections between people with a disability and their community,” said Sheridan Fer-rier, Community Relationship Manager, concluding “the day will be a great day of celebrations for people with disabilities in the Hunter.”

Ms Ferrier went on to say, “It’s an excit-ing time right now for people with dis-abilities in the Hunter with the recent

introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme and, in December, the Special Olympics 2013 Asia Pacific Games and the International Day of People with a Disability, all shining the spotlight on the Hunter.”

Asian Cup alliance great for Newcastle

Action from the match between the Jets and Special Olympics footballers

A ustralia’s 2015 Asian Cup has formed a strategic alliance with the Special Olympics 2013 Asia Pacific Games to celebrate New-

castle’s involvement as a host city for both events. The partnership was sealed at a friendly mini-match involving two New-castle Jets A-League players and Special Olympics footballers at Hunter Stadium on Thursday.

The Hunter Stadium is the venue for the opening ceremony on December 1 of the first ever Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games (SOAPG) for athletes with an intel-lectual disability.

It will also host four matches, including a semi-final and the third-fourth place play-off, at the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, the biggest football tournament ever staged in Aus-tralia.

The Asian Cup/Special Olympics alliance will involve both organisations in a knowl-edge sharing agreement.

Member for Newcastle, Tim Owen said: “The news that Australia’s 2015 Asian Cup

has formed a strategic alliance with the Special Olympics 2013 Asia Pacific Games comes as great news for Newcastle and NSW, which is hosting both events,” Mr Owen said. “The 2015 Asian Cup will be the biggest football tournament ever staged in Australia. This alliance between the Asian Cup and the Special Olympics will involve both organisations in a knowledge-sharing agreement, which will offer significant mutual benefits.”

NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris said: “The NSW Gov-ernment, through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, is proud to support the Special Olympics 2013 Asia Pacific Games, which is expected to bring an economic impact of over $8 million to the region.

“I commend the Asian Cup/Special Olympics alliance on its collaborative fo-cus in sharing knowledge as well as work-ing to achieve beneficial outcomes for all involved. The alliance will provide a major boost for both events.”

Get set for the JetsA

fter nearly three years away from the stage, the Scream-ing Jets have made a tri-umphant return to the live circuit with their 15-date

national ‘Real Deal’ tour which will wrap up where it all began – Newcastle, for three special shows next month.

“Mate, it has been unreal,” and enthusi-astic Jets frontman, Dave Gleeson, told TE.

“The first show back was in Caloundra and it was a real festival type crowd which was a great way to get back into it. We’ve also sold out shows at the Corner Hotel in Melbourne and the Metro in Sydney and one Cambo one [Thursday Dec 12], which is just brilliant.”

For Gleeson, though, having the oppor-tunity to wrap up the tour in the band’s hometown was just the icing on the cake.

“Back in the good old days, we played something like 26 shows in the front bar and we really learnt who we were as a band in there. We have such a long history with the venue and it kind of feels a bit like com-ing full circle to be playing there again."

Since forming from the ashes of Newcas-tle band Aspect in 1989, the Screaming Jets

Stephen BiSSet

have been at the very top of the Aussie rock and roll tree. With such well-craft-ed tracks as ‘Better’, ‘Helping Hand’ and ‘Sad Song’, the Jets essentially

picked up the pub rock mantle laid down by the likes of the Angels (which Gleeson now fronts) and Cold Chisel.

Gleeson said it was the bands attitude

and tenacity (not to mention one of the most formidable stage presences on the circuit), just as much as their inherent abil-ity to write great songs, that has seen the band stand the test of time.

“We were a very working class band and I guess, in some respects, we thought we were a lot tougher than we actually were,” he laughed.

“I think a lot of that had to do with com-ing from Newcastle. When regular Joe Public and record companies found out where we were from they were like “oh right, Newcastle,” like there was an aura about the city, and we definitely played up to that.

“Also, the start and heart of the Jets is the songwriting – both Grant [Walmsley] and Paul [Woseen] are brilliant songwriters and while Grant isn’t with the band anymore, I’ve got complete faith in Paul as a song-writer.”

While this tour will essentially be a great-est hits run – a teaser for an extensive 25th anniversary tour planned for next year, Gleeson reiterated that the Jets were still very much a going concern with a new al-bum planned for next year.

“Yeah, we’re going to be recording in the new year, so there’s still plenty of life in the Jets yet.”

Untamable country

With a Golden Guitar, two CMC Music Awards, an ARIA Mainstream Top 20 and an ARIA Coun-try number one and

their latest album ‘Country Proud’ kick-ing serious goals both here and in the US,

there’s little denying that Newcastle/Blue Mountains country rock duo McAlister Kemp are a force to be reckoned with.

After a triumphant appearance at this year’s CMC Rocks the Hunter, the boys caught the eye of American country jug-gernaut Big and Rich who invited the duo to Nashville where they started writing for their highly anticipated follow-up to ‘Country Proud’, ‘Harder To Tame’.

So impressed were Big and Rich by the boys songs and high-energy show, that they drove the duo over four state lines and invited them to sing their anthemic ‘Country Proud’ to a 30,000-strong crowd at the Country Thunder Festival in Wis-consin.

“We started off the year with a couple of Golden Guitar nominations and things have just been getting better from there,” Troy Kemp told TE.

“We’ve also spent a fair part of the year working on our new album – we were over in Nashville in April writing for the album, so we ended up writing some in Nashville and some back home – we ended up with about 70 or 80 songs that we had to whittle back down to 10. We went over again in June working on it with producer Justin Moore who, if you know anything about country, is a pretty big deal. We really wanted to work with a top-level Nash-

Stephen BiSSet

ville producer to see how we could push our sound with a really super slick pro-duction and I have to say that I’m really excited about the result.”

If the rousing, titular single is anything to go by, ‘Harder To Tame’ is almost guaran-teed to push McAlister Kemp even further into the stratosphere and while Kemp said that there tends to be a bit of a stigma in Australia about the rockier side of country , he added that they were proud to be a part

McAlister KeMp Wests, lAMbton FridAy 29 nov

of an evolving Aussie sound.“It’s a very hard-working blue-collar

American-esque party-country sound, I guess,” Kemp said. “There does tend to be a bit of a backlash in Australia, you know, people saying “you guys aren’t country", but we are definitely part of a new and evolving country sound. We have the upmost respect for the Slim Dustys and John Williamsons - we know and respect the roots of Austral-ian country but for us it’s about a much more upbeat and rockier vibe.”

The band will be playing their final show for the year at Wests this weekend and Kemp said that punters could ex-pect one hell of a show.

“There will be plenty of hands in the air, for sure,” he laughed. “We’re also go-ing to be shooting a video for our next single at Wests, so if you fancy getting in a video, come on down.”

The good folks at Loun-geRoom entertainment are gearing up for their final secret show of the year, and with be-

witching singer-songwriter Jenny Biddle at the helm, it’s sure to be an absolute doozy. The intense and somewhat complex style of her mu-sic touches upon many issues that affect us all. She describes herself as “Missy Higgins meets The Waifs, with some mesmarising guitar voy-ages thrown in.”

Destined to walk a musical path

from a young age, a brief encounter with the ukulele at age four lit Bid-dle’s obsession. More recently, her latest single ‘Hindsight’ hit num-ber nine on the iTunes songwrit-ers charts and she has also held the prestigious title of Melbourne’s Best Busker 2010-2012 along with the people’s choice award at the Tam-worth Country Music Festival Busk-ing Championship in 2012. Along with the secret show, Biddle will also be presenting a free songwrit-ing workshop while in Newcastle, with details to be announced.

If you’re planning on heading out to the Small Ballroom to see Melbourne-born psych rockers Closure In Moscow, you’d better be prepared to have your mind

blown if frontman Christopher deCinque has anything to do with it.

“Yeah, man it’s going to be one hell of a nutty, acid-soaked, orgasmic experi-ence,” he told TE.

The band are currently riding high on the back of their latest and brilliantly swirling single ‘The Church of the Technochrist’ from their highly anticipated sophomore album ‘Pink Lemonade’ which is due to drop in February next year.

After creating much hubbub with their debut EP, ‘The Penance and the Patience’ the band relocated to the US to record their debut LP, ‘First Temple’ in 2009 and deCinque said that while it may have been a long time between drinks for the band – the wait will be definitely worth it.

“The major chance stylistically with this album is that after we recorded ‘First Temple’ we recruited a new rhythm sec-tion which has opened our sound up heaps more, and this album [Pink Lem-onade] was mostly tracked live which I think comes across pretty well on the sin-gle,” he said.

DeCinque added that the difficult sec-ond album tag definitely applied to ‘Pink

Lemonade’ as an intensive touring period after ‘First Temple’ left the band near de-pleted.

“After ‘First Temple’, it was a really hard and strange time and the recording process for the new album was marred by various oppressive forces and I found myself doubting if the thing would even see the f***ing light of day which just compounded the anxiety of it all. But, to finally see the light at the end of the tun-nel is just awesome. It just feels so nice that the machine is all greased and we’re almost ready to unleash it on the world.

Tall tales and true

After years of plying his trade with such local out-fits as The Funbusters, Mark Wells, Special Branch, Loonatic Fringe and Bob

Corbett’s Roo Grass Band, as well as the likes of Ian Moss and Moving Pictures, om-nipotent Newcastle muso Dave Carter is fi-nally stepping out on his own with his first solo album ‘Ten Tall Tales’.

“It definitely has been a long time com-ing,” Carter told TE.

“I’ve been playing around the traps for a really long time now and I have played on so many other people’s albums I thought it was high time that I did one of my own.”

That’s not to say that this was a spur of the moment decision as he said the al-bum had been a labour of love for years.

“The idea was formulated, I guess, around 15 years ago but I’d start working on it and then get side-tracked by other projects or just life in general.

“Then the actual recording was pretty long as well – it was around 18 months from when I first walked into the studio.”

Carter enlisted the services of frequent collaborator and mate Robbie Long to produce the album and he said the intui-tiveness fostered between the pair over

House music fans will have plenty to write home about this weekend when local heroes DJ Patsan, CRocQ, Sean Michael, Matt Me-

ler and Sean Andrews team up with New York via Sydney legend Bobby Blaze (pictured) hit the CBD Hotel for a bit of ‘Groove Therapy’.

Bobby Blaze has earned his internation-al reputation as one of the most sought after DJs today. His futuristic style and approach to music has secured Blaze re-

spected residencies at New York’s most exclusive hotspots such as Greenhouse, Catch and Hotel Gansevoort. His 19 year career behind the booth includes stints at legendary clubs like Limelight, Tunnel & Lot 61. The demand for Blaze’s beats are what brought him to spin in other trend-setting cities such as Paris, Miami, Las Vegas, Amsterdam, Rio, Tel Aviv, Sydney and Melbourne. Patsan and CRocQ will also be launching their new single ‘Break it Down’ which is out on Patsan’s label Pdms Records.

the years proved invaluable.“Yeah, it was great working with

Robbie – there were times where we would only have to look at each other and he’d get what I wanted,” he said.

“It was also good because we got to learn different creative sides to each other.”

For Carter, it was his father who first infected him withthe muso bug .

“My dad played in bands and I

used to go along to shows as a kid in my dressing gown and slippers,” he laughed.

“There was one night I was sitting in the band room at the side of the stage and he asked me if I wanted to play Johnny B Goode with the band. So, there I was at the side of the stage strumming along – he probably didn’t even have me turned up, but from that moment, I was hooked.

With a sound that is steeped in harmony driven folk, roots, gospel and, of course, jug band, Melbourne

via Perch Creek outfit The Perch Creek Family Jugband have spread their sonic

wings with their latest single ‘Big Things Calling’ – a tubthumping little number that has one foot in trad territory and one firmly in neo-indie-folk land along with some of the lushest harmonies heard this year.

The band, made up of siblings Camilla, Christi, Eileen and Lear Hodgkins and James Chandler, is currently win the mid-dle of their ‘Dressing Up, Shaking Down’ tour and Camilla Hodgkins told TE that Novocastrian punters could expect a bit more than your average pub gig when they hit town – as the name of the tour might suggest.

“Yeah, we’re so excited – there have been some really radical costumes busted out by some of us on this tour and we are encouraging people to dress up and come along,” she said.

Originally from Perch Creek on the NSW North Coast, The Perch Creek Family Jug-band began life a street jug band led by

their eccentric father, Bob Hodgkins. “It’s been going for a very long time,’

Hodgkins said.“Dad and I were playing, with some of

his adult friends, around the Perch Creek area and then my brother Lear started learning the drums and everything just kind of fell into place – Dad never really forced us into the band or anything.

“It is interesting playing in a band with your relatives but I’d have to say that overall it’s a blessing. I mean, we have our moments just like any other family but so far, life on the road for us has been great.”

A long-standing fixture on the Hamilton dining scene, Verde Luna offers a bustling trattoria-

style dining experience. My dining partner and I decided to begin

our evening with a Verde Luna Italiano pizza to share and we were in no way dis-appointed. The thin and crisp base held just the perfect amount of topping with no undesirable soggy spots in the mid-dle. Fresh tomato, capsicum, olives and a spicy pepperoni are the predominant fla-vours with just the right amount of oreg-ano, Romano cheese and anchovies really lifting this humble dish. My choice of the

classic veal saltimbocca for main was an absolute delight. The soft and tender veal simply melted away and was in no way overpowered by the traditional ham and cheese topping – both being mild and a perfect accompaniment to the delicate meat. A garlic and white wine reduction topped the dish off perfectly as did the side of beautifully cooked vegetables that were served in a fresh Napolitana sauce. My dining partner’s chicken pepperonata was another winner. A heady aroma of basil emanating from the gorgeous white wine pesto reduction. A mix of grilled cap-sicum strips and eggplant were delicious enough, but when combined with a per-fectly grilled chicken breast, you’ll get a meal that packs a hefty flavour punch.

With his previous outfit, the multi-platinum post-emo outfit Dash-board Confessional going on indefinite hi-

atus, frontman Chris Carrabba is keeping his toe well and truly in the musical waters with his folksy-esque outfit Twin Forks. Following the recent announcement that the band would be joining Canada’s City and Colur on a few shows on their Aus-tralian tour, news of Twin Forks headline shows couldn’t have come soon enough. In recording his first collection of songs as Twin Forks, Carabba harnessed the acoustic sprit Dashboard Confessional

and channelled it through the rootsy classic folk sounds of his childhood. He pulled together some fiends – Suzie Zel-din on mandolin, Jonathon Clark on bass and Ben Homola on drums to create a sound that balances their punk and alt-rock backgrounds with music of a more traditional bent.

“At the beginning of Dashboard, I want-ed to write an acoustic record, but every time I played a D,C, or G chord - which are called the 'cowboy chords' - I would think about how Tom Petty or Cat Ste-vens or John Denver or Gordon Lightfoot did this already," Carrabba said. "That's when I started tuning my guitars all to hell and back, just so they sounded weird to me. I was probably playing DCG anyway, but I didn't know anything about guitar, and that was how I could get myself feeling like I was in new ter-ritory."

Independent spirit alive and well

If ever you needed proof that New-castle is a seething hotbed of mu-sical talent, then you need look no further than the nominations list for the recent 2013 Australian In-

dependent Music Awards.

Homegrown acts Cornstalk, Alex Bow-en, Peta Evans Taylor and Let the Num-ber Be X peppered the nominations list, across a variety of categories.

Roots-rockers Cornstalk snagged three nominations in the rock, alternative and video categories for their songs ‘Shut My Door’, ‘Great Love’ and ‘Traveln’ Song’ respectively. Singer songwriter Alex Bowen was recognised in the blues and roots category for his song ‘Wait For Me’ and in the acoustic singer-songwriter

category for ‘Goldless’ while Peta Evans Taylor picked up a whopping six nomi-nations – one in the alternative category for ‘Strike Out’ which also snared a nom-ination in the video category, one in the live category for ‘Slow’, one in pop for ‘Artificial Happiness’ and two in the rock category for ‘Drive’ and ‘The Darkness’.

Electronic/metal genre benders Let The Number Be X found themselves nominated in the dance/electronica cat-egory for their track ‘Simon Says’ and in the metal/hardcore category for ‘Trigger Me Happy’.

While there were no winners on the night, just to see so many Novocastrian nominations shows that t there’s a heck of a lot of independent talent in this town.

There's little doubt of the talent in this town. Congratulations to all.
