Following the success of the past two years, I am delighted to announce the New Zealand Excellence Awards for 2018/19.
These awards are a joint initiative of Education New Zealand and New Zealand's eight universities. They offer high-achieving Indian undergraduate and graduate students a chance to advance their careers through specialist study in New Zealand.
To date, 66 talented Indian awardees have had the opportunity to study in New Zealand in the fields of science, technology, engineering, business and design. The 2018/19 awards will enable a further group of Indian scholars to pursue specialist study abroad – and to future proof themselves.
In September 2017, New Zealand's education system was ranked 1st in the world for delivering a future-focused education in the Economist Intelligence Unit's 2017 Worldwide Educating for the Future Index. New Zealand earned full marks across 15 of 16 indicators that assessed the role of education systems in instilling future skills. Among these indicators were a curriculum framework that encouraged critical thinking skills, great collaboration between universities and industry and a broader society that fosters cultural diversity and tolerance.
Our universities, all eight of which are ranked among the top 3 percent globally, actively apply research and teaching programmes to real-world issues and have centres that serve to champion student innovation and entrepreneurship.
New Zealand's diverse and welcoming culture is enriched by our intrinsic Mãori value of kaitiakitanga, which is about guardianship of people and place and caring for what is precious for future generations.
What does this mean for India – a country set to be the youngest in the world by 2020 with an average age of 29 years and a growing pool of talented working-age people?
Through initiatives such as the New Zealand Excellence Awards, New Zealand can play its part in providing talented young Indians with the broad skills – interdisciplinary, entrepreneurial, leadership, digital and technical skills as well as strong global awareness – needed to meet the challenges of the future.
I wish you all the best in your application and look forward to welcoming you to New Zealand – Nau mai, haere mai.
Message from Grant McPhersonNew Zealand and India enjoy a long standing and a very positive relationship. There's much that we share, our Commonwealth heritage means we have similar legal systems, use the English language, and have a strong and shared passion for cricket. But most importantly we are both democracies, with respect for good governance, transparency and the rule of law. New Zealand is home to over 155,000 people of Indian origin (4% of total population), and Hindi as the fourth most spoken language.
New Zealand places a strong emphasis on education. We pride ourselves on an education system which nurtures creativity and innovation; which celebrates independent thinking and problem solving and which drives a culture of learning and team work.
India is our second largest source market for international students. New Zealand campuses recorded over 28,000 Indian students in 2016 and our universities have seen an increase in enrollments of 28% in 2017.
All our universities continue to be featured in top 3% globally according to 2018 QS World University Rankings. We rank world number #1 in the Ease of Doing Business according to the IFC World Bank, Doing Business 2018 report and are judged the second most peaceful nation in the world by the Global Peace Index 2017. The Economist's Economic Intelligence Unit just ranked New Zealand education as best in the world in preparing students for the future. The mix of cultural experience and economic opportunities provided by the New Zealand education system makes it a perfect choice for international students.
The New Zealand Excellence Awards are a great way to encourage ambitious and capable Indian students to choose New Zealand as their higher education destination and join the existing cohort of Kiwi Ambassadors around the world. These Awards offer an outstanding opportunity for Indian students to experience world class New Zealand education, while developing life-long people to people links right across the globe and enjoying all that New Zealand has to offer. In turn, they contribute to New Zealand's global linkages, fostering future diplomatic, trading and investment links.
My best wishes to you all as you enter an exciting new era of learning that will benefit both our countries.

We are New Zealand's second largest and fastest growing university, located in New Zealand's largest and fastest growing city.
We've over 30,000 adventurous, energised, innovative educators, researches and students who want to test boundaries, challenge established theories, break new ground and discover what is possible. Our diversity and international outlook has led to global recognition – we are ranked in the top 50 world universities under 50 years old by Times Higher Education.
Studying in New Zealand is our passport to the future, because tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.
The study program and courses in New Zealand are practical with hands-on training. The style of learning is not just memorizing, but more about absorbing knowledge through understanding and thinking in a different way. The curriculum is built in such a way that it focuses more on the development of skills which employers are looking out for. Also, the assignments, projects and exams are holistic, as it helps you to work with other international students in collaboration.
AUT University benefits me to study and interact with students from more than 95 countries. The locals are extremely friendly, helpful and approachable. The perks of staying in Auckland and Wellington are high, as they are one of the most liveable cities in the world. Moreover, the scenic beauty of New Zealand makes the lifestyle very peaceful.

What I enjoy best is the collaboration during the teaching and learning process. It encourages out of the box thinking, it’s flexible and it involves knowledge sharing. The huge amount of support available made it easy to adapt to the different style of teaching. Having come from a country where the methodology of teaching and studying is completely different, it took me a while to adapt. However, AUT offers innumerable tools of support, including seminars, workshops and webinars. That made this journey very smooth for me.

Diversity of courses offered, their reputation in producing highly skilled graduates through high quality education system were key factors which helped me decide to choose Lincoln University.
My programme is well organised and our course module gets updated regularly so that students can keep up with the changes in the outside world. This keeps me motivated to attend every lecture. The regular field trips are very valuable and educative.
The faculty Are very approachable and helpful at all times, always encouraging students to enhance their subject knowledge and develop new ideas.
The quality of education in New Zealand is unmatched. Students are able to realise their potential, get confident to face challenges and explore innovative ideas through the knowledge and experience they gain during the learning process.
My goal is to work in the R&D department at one of the leading dairy companies in New Zealand, to formulate novel products and to produce solutions to problems faced by the dairy sector. I am sure my education will make me ready to take up any challenge at my workplace.
Surya Shankar Komathukattil SureshGraduate Diploma in Applied Scienve ( Major in Food Quality Management)
Lincoln University is best in Agriculture Studies. My course has made me think practically about how to become a successful farmer. Given that it's an agricultural based university, most students are off farms from across New Zealand. Each student has a laid back, good fun attitude – making the typical Lincoln student great value. Clubs and committees have also been a great way to meet new people. I need to work practically hands on in a farm to understand the principles and the implementation of the modern technologies. New Zealand has 25,000 dairy farms. For me it was easy to find a part-time job, since I had 7 years of experience in dairy farm in India. My passion is to work on a dairy farm to get hands on experience about the technology they use in farm.
Another bonus is that as an international student I can study at Lincoln University and transfer credit back to their degree at home.
I've spent most weekends out exploring my new home with mates and the scenery has been unreal. You are never more than 30 minutes away from a place that will make your jaw drop.

During my one year of study, I valued every single thing about studying here at Massey, from the availability of varied infrastructure, accessibility to multiple facilities and overall exposure to different disciplines of creative arts. With respect to the design programme, the university offers a massive library that is regularly updated, along with giving students access to other libraries around the country. The campus also has a 3D printing workshop and a digital fabrication lab (also known as the Fab Lab Wgtn), which makes design explorations easy. The course requirements are also laid out in compliance with vocational training and industry requirements rather than theoretical material. This opens up the scope of getting a job in the real industry once you have gained the degree.

My passion for computers influenced my decision to focus on this area of study, and I chose the University of Auckland as it is the best university in New Zealand. The infrastructure, amenities, and facilities at the University are all good and the teaching and academic staff are knowledgeable and helpful.
I received the NZEA scholarship which has helped me a long way towards paying my second semester fee. When I finish studying I want be a developer at a good IT company, and my degree in IT at the University of Auckland will help me get that.
I enjoy the environment and people in Auckland and found it easy to make friends. In my spare time I like to explore the city, and have travelled as far as Cape Reinga. I also joined the University’s IT club, dessert club and Auckland University Students’ Association.

I have always been curious about buildings, cities, their growth and development. From my background in architecture I am interested in the way buildings are built, and projects accomplished with a sensitivity that architecture and planning brings to these developments.
It is during my practice as an architect and entrepreneur that I realised the power and influence the industry has. Architects are nuclei of projects in most cases. This is when I decided to be a stronger nucleus who can manage projects well.
Auckland is a growing city and I feel lucky to be a part of its growth as a construction industry professional. Everyone has been very friendly and approachable – this is the friendliest place I have ever been to. I would like to explore each and every corner of New Zealand and all that it has to offer. It so beautiful everywhere.

I chose The University of Waikato not just because of its prestige, but also because I knew I would get the chance to explore untapped areas of existing technologies and enable them for use in future projects with the support of my faculty. I'm so glad I chose to study here. Hamilton is truly a beautiful city, surrounded by visually stunning natural landscapes. The courses at the University are very advanced and match the current technology trends in the market.
Every assignment was exciting and challenging, and having access to useful student resources like Moodle and Panopto recordings helped me track my progress and revise lectures. Being proactive, diligent and motivated is key. No doubt, studying at the University of Waikato is an experience I have thoroughly enjoyed.

Studying at the University of Waikato was a dream come true. The amount of exposure that I got in my field of study was tremendous. As a result, it helped me to boost up my confidence and broaden my knowledge to a great extent. The 24hr lab facility that the university provides helped me a lot when it comes to finishing my assignments and doing many other academic related works. The university also provides one of the best gym facility inside the campus for students which helped me to stay physically and mentally strong throughout my academic session.
If you are looking for a place to enjoy your studies, the University of Waikato is the best place to be. The ambience and the positive studying atmosphere gives all the students the confidence to move forward in their work. And the teaching faculty are always ready to help you solve doubts and assignments giving the students a continuous workflow.

I experienced an absolute world-class teaching at the University of Canterbury where the lecturers bring in a lot of experience and stimulate class discussions which help in learning real-time, real-life problems. Most of our assignments were challenging and I get to solve an existing problem for businesses. I thoroughly enjoyed all my lectures and I loved the way we could freely move with them and speak openly about anything.
The courses are strategically designed to prepare the students market ready. The teaching is majorly focussed on what is relevant in today's market and what would be the future. We are prepared to be problem solvers. In addition, a lot of focus on self-development, leadership and reflection. It shapes you from being a person to become a better person.
New Zealand is a pristinely beautiful place. It was great to get some kiwi friends and be around with them. I have travelled quite a bit and enjoy the culture and nature. I wanted to contribute back to this country which offered me a place to study and hence I decided to do my final MBA project on something which would be beneficial to New Zealand. I think I owe more to this place and looking for an opportunity to pay back.

It is great to be a part of University of Canterbury as it is one of the top Universities in my chosen faculty. It has an internationally recognized seismic reputation with distinguished professors who are experts in the field. Besides this, New Zealand is the most beautiful country I have ever seen. The campus is very eco-friendly and maintains the scenic beauty. There are different study zones like silent zone and combine study area in every part of the campus which is suitable for all students. The career hub in the campus is very active. They have all the programs tailor-made to help us prepare our CV and get a job. It is hard not to mention about the recreation centre which is absolutely free for the UC students equipped with all the facilities, where they offer free classes as well as paid classes for the advanced sessions. The University gives equal importance to sports as well as academics, where it has a huge playground exclusively for the outdoor sports activities.

I am very happy with my decision to study at University of Otago. It is a great university. I enjoy my course and the way the modules have been structured. The classroom sizes are very small with only 8-10 people offering opportunities for one on one interactions. The faculty overall is very friendly and welcoming, thus making me feel at ease.
I am enjoying this different way of teaching where, the professors offer you an overview and then the assignments and the students need to research themselves, hence making studying more interesting.
Also being exposed to students from so many different countries and cultures makes my experience at Otago really fascinating and complete. I am proud of the fact that I now have friends who have come from different parts of the world while being in New Zealand.

I have had a wonderful experience with the staff, it’s very easy to approach the teaching fellows and studying is not merely learning here, it is much more than that. Learning has become an exciting and fun task for me - Otago has made both the living and the learning invigorating.
The teaching style is very different to what I have experienced. Even in the theoretical classes, concepts are taught in a practical way, and if I talk about the labs they are simply amazing!
I haven’t felt homesick since the day I left my home town because there is so much to do here and so many people around to help me out. People are so helpful, kind hearted and welcoming too which is a relief for international students like me.
The University of Otago is a gateway to your dreams. You will have a once in a life time experience with world class facilities and faculty.

As an aspiring pharmacy graduate from India, I wanted to extend my knowledge in drug development and Victoria University of Wellington just had a course to fulfil my aspiration. Lecturers are friendly and are always willing to help and they even understand the problems of international students. Faculties are more concentrated on students acquiring the knowledge from the courses and they have many ways to actually facilitate this. I feel this style is completely distinctive from what it was back in India. They have many activities going on easing the pressure of the students and there are groups to ensure career pathways for students. The University connects to many companies and institutes in providing worthy internships for the students as it makes the students future ready. I also felt the New Zealand is best place for pursuing studies from its eco-friendly environment to affectionate people who are always at help when you need them. It has a lot of places around it to make an adventure, especially for young people.

The standard of education in New Zealand is at par with my expectation. My curriculum is updated to current industry standards and is very practical. It is very practical to real work scenario.
My faculty helps me to understand the charters related to ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites), WCC (Wellington City Council), Heritage New Zealand. Course work is based on site study.
Victoria International and the faculties of school of design are really helpful, friendly and they instigate my thirst for gaining more knowledge in my field of study and profession.
Career hub helped me to look for opportunities, to prepare CV and my portfolio. It also helped me to learn about membership of Registered Architect Overseas.

Scholarships at VICTORIA UNIVERSITY OF WELLINGTON
