Previously known as the Air New Zealand Wine Awards and the Bragato Wine Awards, the New Zealand Wine of the Year™ Awards is the official wine competition of the New Zealand wine industry.

The New Zealand Wine of the Year™ Awards combines the very best components of the previous competitions. It focuses on rewarding the grape grower and their single vineyard wines (a core component of the Bragato Wine Awards), as well as championing New Zealand wine excellence on a larger scale (a key objective of the Air New Zealand Wine Awards).

Chair of Judges Report 2018The opportunity to be involved with New Zealand Winegrowers in the planning and execution of the inaugural New Zealand Wine of the Year™ Awards has enabled both Ben Glover and myself to help take the positive legacies of the Air New Zealand Wine Awards and the Bragato Wine Awards and move them forward towards a completely refreshed, new and exciting format. It is important to stress that the goal was not to simply rehash or blend the previous iterations of the two competitions but to attempt to completely revive and invigorate the New Zealand wine competition scene.

The focus of the New Zealand Wine of the Year™ Awards competition is strongly towards celebrating the entire New Zealand wine industry with a particular lean towards vineyard excellence and regionality. The increasing relevance of organic grape growing and the move towards a single vineyard focus in our industry has been particularly rewarded in this new format. The important commercial categories that drive the volume and export sales remain.

With an increased focus on these categories, it was important that the wines were judged in an appropriate manner so as to illustrate these differences and strengths. In what may be a first in the New Zealand wine competition scene, all wines were judged in regional brackets. This was carried out while the wines remained totally masked, with judges having no knowledge of region, however, giving the tasters and wines an advantage of being judged like with like. Similarly, the organic wines were not only judged in the main depth of the competition but also presented as a class of organic wines in isolation. This gave the best wines the strongest chance to shine.

Following the three days of judging of the close to 1400 wines entered, 77 gold medals were awarded. At 5.8% this is true to industry standards and shows a wine competition with strong rigour in its judging. A further example of this rigour is the audit process that is carried out post judging to ensure the wines that win awards are true to the ones available in the market place.

It is particularly pleasing to see a spread of gold medals throughout the majority of New Zealand’s wine regions. The larger areas of Marlborough, Hawke’s Bay and Central Otago took out the lion’s share of the awards with golds also given to the Gisborne, Wellington Wine Country, Nelson, Canterbury and North Otago regions.

The gold medal list and resulting trophies shows that our maturing and evolving wine industry is beginning to display a very strong relationship between variety, style and wine region. This link appears far more dramatic than in past awards and suggests we are beginning to find a true sense of place in our very youthful wine industry.Marlborough dominated the Sauvignon


Blanc, Pinot Gris, Sparkling and aromatics classes, also fighting with Hawke’s Bay for Chardonnay bragging rights. Central Otago was prominent in Riesling and Pinot Noir, as has been the recent norm while Hawke’s Bay completely dominated the full-bodied red category. Other individual highlights were achieved by the smaller wine regions with regional trophies being awarded for Pinot Noir in the Canterbury, Nelson and Wellington Wine Country regions. Gisborne showed true to form with a gold medal and trophy for Chardonnay.

The average quality of the wines was very high, particularly considering the recent challenging vintages in a number of regions. In addition to the 77 gold medals, 236 silver medals and 601 bronze medals were awarded by a team of 29 judges. There was a total of 914 medals awarded across 16 classes, including the newly introduced Provenance Class. This was a very competitive class in its first year with 32 sets of three wines, each set judged over three vintages spanning a minimum of 10 years.

The gold medal winning wines then went on to vie for 13 varietal trophies and 11 regional awards. In a refreshing change to previous awards, the varietal and regional trophies were declared prior to the New Zealand Wine Awards dinner celebration in Wellington on the 3rd of November. The final act was the awarding of the eight major trophies for the New Zealand Wine of the Year™ Awards. These include the New Zealand Wine of the Year™ Champion (presented by O-I New Zealand), Best Single Vineyard White Wine, JF Hillebrand New Zealand Best Single Vineyard Red Wine, Label and Litho Limited Best Open White Wine, QuayConnect Best Open Red Wine, Best Organic White Wine,

Best Organic Red Wine and Best Wine of Provenance.

I would like to thank the entire team who were involved in the 2018 New Zealand Wine of the Year™ Awards; New Zealand Winegrowers, our many sponsors, the judges, the stewards and Shona White, the competition coordinator. In particular, I wish to acknowledge our international judges – PJ Charteris (Australia) and Dr Jamie Goode (UK). International judges provide great global perspectives on wine varieties and styles and contribute hugely to the stylistic direction of our wines. Also, to Ben Glover, who in title acted as Deputy Chair, but in reality was a brother in arms in driving the new competition to what I believe was a great success in its first year. A further team of 15 senior judges and 10 associate judges made up an impressive line-up of wine judging talent. I have every confidence that the wines we have selected as a group are a remarkably strong and diverse range of world-class wines.

The judges then hold a ‘taste off’, and vote for which of these Gold Medal winners is the best wine in each category. This wine is then awarded the Trophy.

Each wine entered into the New Zealand Wine of the Year™ Awards is tasted blind by a panel of three senior judges and two associate judges. The wines are served in anonymous glasses so that judges do not know what wine is in the glass. The judges score each wine using the 100

point system developed in Australia. Each wine is assessed for colour and clarity, aroma and bouquet, and taste and general impression. The three senior judges’ scores are averaged and medals are awarded to wines whose scores attain the medal standard.
