Franz Liszt1811 – 1886

Liszt became renowned throughout Europe during the nineteenth century for his great, virtuosic skill as a per-former. He was said by his contemporaries to have been the most technically-advanced pianist of his age and perhaps the greatest pianist of all time. He was also an important and influential composer, a notable piano teacher, a conductor.

In Vienna, Liszt received piano lessons from Carl Czerny, who in his own youth had been a student of Beethoven. He also received lessons in composition from Antonio Salieri, who was then music director of the Viennese court. After his father's death Liszt moved to Paris; hesoon came into contact with many of the leading authors and artists of his day, including Victor Hugo, Alphonse de Lamartine and Heinrich Heine. After attending an April 20, 1832 concert for charity, for the victims of a Parisian cholera epidemic, by Niccolò Paganini, Liszt became determined to become as great a virtuoso on the piano as Paganini was on the violin. Paris in the 1830s had become the nexus for pianistic activities, with dozens of pianists dedi-cated to perfection at the keyboard.

After 1842 "Lisztomania" swept across Europe. The reception Liszt enjoyed as a result can only be described as hysterical. Women fought over his silk handkerchiefs and velvet gloves, which they ripped to shreds as souvenirs. Helping fuel this atmosphere was the artist's mesmeric per-sonality and stage presence. Many witnesses later testified that Liszt's playing raised the mood of audiences to a level of mystical ecstasy.

Liszt was a prolific composer. He is best known for his piano music, but he wrote extensively for many media. Because of his background as a forefront technical piano virtuoso, Liszt's piano works are often marked by their difficulty. Liszt is very well known as a programmatic com-poser, or an individual who bases his composi-tional ideas in extra-musical things such as a poetry or painting.

An encore is an additional performance added to the end of a concert, from the French "encore", which means "again", "some more"; multiple encores are not uncommon. Encores originated spontane-ously, when audiences would continue to applaud and demand additional perfor-mance from the artist after the concert had ended. In some modern circumstances, encores have come to be expected, and artists often plan their encores.

Traditionally, in a concert that has a printed set list for the audience, encores are not listed, whether they are planned or spontaneous. Though the word derives from French, French-speaking people commonly use either une autre, un rappel or the Latin bis in the same circumstances, but sometimes scream "encore!" to ask the artist for an encore.

The founder and artistic director of the New York Piano Festival, Mr. Beridze is a pianist with a vision and a mission. He maintains a busy schedule equally active as both a performer and a teacher. As the Gold Medalist of the 2009 World Piano Competition in Cincinnati, Mr. Beridze was recently presented at the Alice Tully Hall in Lincol Center, where he delivered an exciting performance to a full house. Mr. Berdize has won numerous other competitions in his native Republic of Georgia and in the U.S. Most notably, he was the receipient of Georgia's President's Grant both in 2001 and 2005 and the Vladimir Spivakov Award in 2003. In the United States, Mr. Beridze won the 2004 Jacob Flier International Piano Competition

held in New-Paltz, New York. At Mannes, Mr. berdize was the winner of Fidelman Annual Concerto Competition, as a result performed with the Mannes Community Orchestra and the Doctor's Orchestra, both under the baton of Peter Bellino. Other concerto appearances include the Tbilisi State Symphony, the Republic of Georgia State Opera and Ballet Sym-phony, and the Hudson Valley Orchestra of New York.

Mr. Berdize has performed in the master classes of Yefim Bronfam, Claude Frank, Joseph Kalichstein, Jerome Lowenthal, and Menahem Pressler, and is a frequent performer at the Aspen Music Festival where he studied with John O'Conor. Most recently, Mr. Beridze per-formed together in concerts with cellist Yehuda Hanani.

In addition to his musical studies, Mr. Beridze holds a Doctoral degree in Journalism from the Tbilisi State University. During the years of 1996-2006, he was a correspondent for weekly newspaper Kviris Palitra for which he wrote over 500 articles on music and inter-viewed many distinguished musicians including Mstislav Rostropovich, Genadi Rojdest-vensky, Yuri Bashmett, and Maxim Vengerov.

Mr. Beridze completed his Bachelor, Master, and Post-Graduate degrees at the Tbilisi State Conservatory as a student of Edisher Rusishvili. He is currently a faculty member of the Piano School of NYC, and also serves on the faculty at the Extension Division of Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Here, as a teaching assistant, he continues his studies towards a DMA degree with Min Kwon.

Mai Kagaya

As a chamber musician and solo performer, Mai Kagaya has appeared before audiences of Stern audi-torium, Zankel Hall and Weill Recital Hall of Carn-egie Hall, and Steinway Hall, and also the Kaufman Center. In addition to these personal engagements, Ms. Kagaya performs concerts as a member of the New York Piano Duo, and performs frequently with Alexander Beridze in Aspen, CO, Palm Beach, FL, and NYC.

In her native Japan, Ms. Kagaya had already estab-lished herself as a virtuoso performer with a sensi-tive touch and sophisticated artistry while still a teenager.

In 2003, she won the Dorothy MacKenzie Award at the International Keyboard Institute & Festival. As a result of her successful appearances, she was invited back to the festival the following year. She was also awarded numerous prizes by the Piano Teachers' National Association Competition and the Japan Piano Teacher's Association Competition, which led to her triumphal Tsuda Hall debut in Tokyo in 2001.

In 2004, Ms. Kagaya was selected to perform at the prestigious Hamarikyu-Asahi Hall in Tokyo. In 2006 she appeared as a soloist with the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra in Fukuoka City. Her performances were critically acclaimed and she was invited to study in the United States. In 2008, Mai performed with the Mannes Community Orchestra and Doctors Orchestra presented by the Mannes Extension Division as a winner of the Concerto Compe-tition.

Ms. Kagaya performed at master classes presented by legendary pianists and teachers, Alicia de Larrocha, Earl Wild, Victor Merzhanov, and Mikhail Voskresensky. Among her private coaches was German Diez, an assistant pianist to Claudio Arrau.

Ms. Kagaya earned her BM degree at the Toho Conservatory in Japan with Yoriko Taka-hashi. She holds a Master of Music degree from Mannes College of Music where she studied with esteemed pianist and pedagogue Jerome Rose.

Yoonjung Han

Praised by the Cincinnati Enquirer for her "flowing tones, poetic phrasing, and heavenly singing melodies", Pianist Yoonjung Han is a rising star of the piano world.

She was the gold medalist at the 2008 World Piano Com-petition in Cincinnati, and 1st prize recipient of numer-ous competitions such as the Juilliard Gina Bachauer, Kosciuszko Chopin, Nena Wideman.

She also received top prizes at the Concorso Internaziole Ettore Pozzoli and Maj Lind International Piano Compe-tition. She is a recipient of Keyboard Trust Award in Eng-land and Gawon International Music Award in Korea. Han has been named the "Most Promising Young Artist" by the Korean Ministry of Culture.

She has appeared at the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic, Helsinki Phil-harmonic, Seoul philharmonic Orchestra, Houston Sym-phony, Banff Festival Orchestra, and I Pomeriggi Musi-cali di Milan. In 2011, she makes her European debuts with the Berliner Symphoniker, Steinway Hall in London, Bergamo Festival in Italy, and Salle Cortot in Paris.

A graduate from the Curtis Institute of music, and Juil-liard School, Yoonjung is completing her Doctoral degree at the State University of New York, and Artist Diploma at the Universite de Montreal.

Dizhou Zhao

Dizhou Zhao started his piano studies at age four in his hometown of Shanghai. His talent was quickly evident at his young age as he won first prize at the competition in Shanghai and as he performed his first public concert at age seven. The following year, Dizhou was invited to record five piano sonatas by Mozart. His early success continued throughout his career bringing him numerous awards from competitions around the world. He received first prizes in the Dorothy MacKenzie competition, the Southern Highland International Competition in Austra-lia, and the Louisiana International Competition which engaged him for concerts in France, Russia, and Australia and a solo performance at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall.

Other awards received by Dizhou include the Special Chopin Award in the USASU Piano Competition in Ari-zona, third prize in the Tbilisi International Piano Compe-tition in Georgia, the third prize in the Viardo Competition in Dallas, and 2nd prize in the World Competition in Cin-cinnati. He also won the "Special Recognition" Award in the "San Antonio International Competition" in TX.

In 2008, Dizhou was invited to record his first solo CD in Moscow, released under the "classical record" label. Dizhou's performance of the Stravinsky piano concerto with the Queensland orchestra received rave reviews and was recorded for the ABC radio for broadcast. His two solo recitals in the Newport Music Festival also received great reviews by Channing Gray from the Providence Journal.

His engagements in the early 2011 would include all Chopin recitals in Texas, Bergamor music festival and teaching Master classes in Italy and China.

Dizhou completed both his Bachelor and master Degree with a distinguished performance honor under the guid-ance of Alexander Korsantia. Currently, he is working with Mr. Sharon Boaz in Boston University for his DMA degree with full scholarship award, after receiving Artist Diploma from Longy school of music.

Pianist Hong Kiew Kim has been described as a passionate, interesting and convincing musician. He continues to charm audiences in both U.S. and abroad with his com-mentated performances. His virtuoso transcriptions con-tinue to dazzle audiences of U.S., Korea and Sweden since they were first heard over a decade ago. Mr. Kim has made several appearances in Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, Lincoln Center and the Steinway Hall in NY. Recently, he has given themed recitals of all Scandinavian piano works, all Romantic, all Mozart, all Chopin and all Beethoven recitals. He also appeared as soloist with the Vienna International Orchestra under the baton of Robert Lehrbaumer. Aside from his piano performances, Mr. Kim devotes himself to teaching and choral conducting.

Mr. Kim has studied with artists such as Evelyne Crochet, Ilya ltin, Byron Janis, and Marc Silverman. He performed in master classes with Leif Ove Andsnes, Jean Efflam Bavouzet, Dang Thai Son, and Peter Takacs. He received his Masters Degree in Piano Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and Music from Rutgers College, Rutgers University. Mr. Kim has been among the winners of the Bradshaw and Buono International Piano Competition. Hong Kiew Kim's future engagements include perfor-mances and teaching at the New York Piano Festival, recitals in New Brunswick and Bedminster NJ, and NYC.

Praising her "world-class playing," The American Record Guide calls Polish-born Magdalena Baczewska "clearly a rising star."

Magdalena started piano instruction at the age of five and at twelve made her orchestra debut. As a winner of interna-tional piano competitions, she has appeared worldwide as a solo artist and in orchestral performances. Her record-ings and performances, hailed as "eloquent and technically flawless" (The Washington Post), have been broadcast on WQXR, NPR, Voice of America, and on European Radio and Television.

She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Man-hattan School of Music, along with Bachelor and Master's Degree from the Mannes College of Music, New School

University. She is a faculty member at the John J. Cali School of Music, Montclair State Univer-sity in New Jersey as well as the International Keyboard Institute and Festival in New York City. She was among the jurors of the International Chopin Competition at Columbia Univer-sity. She is also a published music critic (New York Concert Review).

Hong Kiew Kim

Japanese pianist Mariko Furukawa started to play the piano at the age of five. After winning numerous competi-tions in her native Japan, she decided to continue her mu-sical career in the U.S. Since 2001 Mariko has won presti-gious competitions and awards including First Prize at Dorothy McKenzie competition and Mannes concerto competition (NYC), Grand prix at the American conserva-toire in Fontainebleau, the Third Prize at Porto Interna-tional Piano Competition in Portugal and the Fourth prize at Kosciusko foundation Chopin competition. Ms. Furu-kawa has appeared in New York’s major halls such as Car-negie Hall, Lincoln Center, The United Nations, Steinway salon both as a soloist and a collaborative pianist. Her performance of Chopin was broadcast at WQXR. She obtained Master’s of Music degree from The Juilliard School in 2009, BM and PSD at Mannes College of Music where she studied with Jerome Rose and Jacob Lateiner.

Violinist Yu-Ting Huang, a native of Taiwan, performs frequent recitals at venues throughout Taiwan such as the National Recital Hall of Taiwan, and has appeared as soloist with the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra.

Huang is also active as a chamber musician, participating in programs at the Norfolk chamber music festival, Knei-sel Hall chamber music festival, and courses coached by Claude Frank, Peter Frankl, Seymour Lipkin, Todd Phil-lips, Ronald Copes, Ani Kavafian, Mathias Tacke, mem-bers of the Tokyo Quartet, member of Ying Quartet, member of Brantano Quartet.

Huang has been invited on tour to perform in the Asian Youth Orchestra, Pacific Music Festival Academy and

Sapporo Symphony Orchestra during the summer. She was the principal violinist in the Pacific Music Festival New Music concert "Pacific Sounding." She has stood on internation-ally renowned performance venues such as Carnegie Hall, Kennedy center, Sapporo Kitara Hall, and the National Taiwan concert Hall.

Huang received her Master of Music and Artist Diploma from the Yale school of music, studying with Syoko Aki. Currently, she is a full scholarship and Fellowship DMA student at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, studying with Todd Phillips.

Huang had been awarded scholarship from the "Treasury of Taiwan Young Musicians Project." Huang's most recent activities include participation at the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, Beethoven Institute under the guidance of Brantano String Quartet.
