FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Mike Maccagnan hasn't had much time to judge his performance in his first year as the New York Jets' general manager.

There are too many other things to do — such as focus on next season.

"I probably won't catch my breath until after the draft," Maccagnan said Thursday while meeting with reporters for the first time since November.

The Jets went 10-6 in Todd Bowles' first season as coach, but missed the playoffs after losing the regular-season finale at Buffalo.

"We're happy with the progress we made," Maccagnan said. "I think in a perfect world, you're hoping to be a team that competes for the playoffs and we came one game short, and that was disappointing."

New York started 4-1, but then hit a tough stretch in which it lost four of five to sit at .500.

Then, things turned around, with the Jets winning five straight to put themselves right back into the postseason picture. Huge seasons from Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, Chris Ivory and Muhammad Wilkerson were all contributors.

But now comes the hard part: Trying to build off that and actually reach the playoffs next season.

"One nice thing about our season, I thought, was watching the team kind of come together in the locker room, and that's some of the stuff — those intangible things — that are hard to judge," Maccagnan said.

"I thought at the end of the season, we came together and did some nice things and statistically, we did good things, but I felt good that we got closer to maybe being a team that could go in there and compete for a playoff spot every year."

Here are some things to know from Maccagnan's state-of-the-franchise sit-down as the offseason begins:

MO'S MONEY: Wilkerson is scheduled to be a free agent this offseason, and has been looking for a long-term extension with the team. He broke his right fibula against the Bills, and Maccagnan said the recovery time is about six months.

The GM doesn't think the injury will not affect negotiations with Wilkerson, who had a career-high 12 sacks this season. Maccagnan did acknowledge that the Jets would like Wilkerson back, and "absolutely" could use the franchise tag on him — or any of the team's other free agents.

WILL FITZ STILL FIT?: Fitzpatrick is coming off a career season in which he set the franchise record with 31 touchdown passes. During the Jets' five-game winning streak, he threw for 13 TDs and just one interception. But in the game against Buffalo, Fitzpatrick was intercepted in each of New York's final three possessions.

Still, Fitzpatrick established himself as a leader after taking over the starting job when Geno Smith had his jaw broken by a punch from Ikemefuna Enemkpali in August.

He could command somewhere around $10 million a year, but Bowles has already said Fitzpatrick will go into next season as the starter — if he returns.

"We'd like very much to get him back, obviously based on how he played this year," Maccagnan said. "But I don't really want to get into the speculation aspect of it. I would simply leave it at: We'll see how this thing works out."

THE "OTHER" QBs: Maccagnan said Bryce Petty made "a lot of progress" in his rookie season after being drafted in the fourth round out of Baylor. He added that the Jets are "very excited" about having another offseason to work with him.

Smith played in just one game this season, leading to speculation that the team could potentially cut ties with the 2013 second-rounder. Maccagnan said "he's under contract" and liked how Smith handled the training camp incident and progressed during the season. The GM added that the team will see how Petty and Smith continue to develop in the offseason, without committing to any scenario.

D-LINE SHUFFLE?: Nose tackle Damon Harrison is considered one of the league's best run stuffers and is in line for a big payday in free agency.

"In a perfect world," Maccagnan said, "we would like very much to have Damon back in the organization."

With Wilkerson and Harrison scheduled to be free agents, Maccagnan acknowledged that the salary cap could be a factor in keeping the line together. But, he added: "Hypothetically or philosophically, it's not impossible."

FREE AGENCY: The Jets won't have as much cap space as they did last offseason, when Maccagnan went on a spending spree to bring in the likes of Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Buster Skrine, James Carpenter and Marcus Gilchrist, and trade for Fitzpatrick and Marshall.

But they'll be somewhere in the middle of the pack, and that should be enough to "target players," which Maccagnan said will be the approach. He added that the goal is to try to keep as much of the team in place as possible while making it more competitive — and setting up "the longer-term sustainability."

Mike Maccagnan wants trio of free agents back (Kimberley A. Martin) Newsday January 14, 2016

http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/mike-maccagnan-wants-trio-of-free-agents-back-1.11327415

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — “In a perfect world,” Mike Maccagnan said, he would keep his roster intact.

Unfortunately for the Jets’ general manager, real life is far from ideal, and retaining every player is a luxury that NFL teams can’t often afford.

In his first sit-down with the beat writers since November, Maccagnan repeatedly said Thursday that he wants to keep quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, Pro Bowl defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson and standout nose tackle Damon Harrison, who are impending free agents. With the trio, and a core of talented players such as Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker and Chris Ivory, the Jets finished 10-6 — a vast improvement on their 4-12 finish in 2014.

Now the question is: Can the Jets retain their coveted free agents without breaking the bank?

Re-signing Fitzpatrick is one of their top priorities, but the 33-year-old quarterback could be seeking as much as $10 million annually after posting the best numbers of his career, including a franchise-record 31 touchdown passes. Maccagnan said he’d love to have Fitzpatrick back “based on how he played this year,” but he noted that finances will dictate the outcome. “I would simply leave it at: We’ll see how this thing works out.”

He also expressed confidence in backup quarterbacks Geno Smith and Bryce Petty. After pointing out that Smith is “under contract,” Maccagnan complimented his progress.

Wilkerson has had his sights set on a long-term contract extension since 2014. But after recording a career- and team-high 12 sacks, he faces an uncertain future. According to Maccagnan, Wilkerson will need about six months to recover from surgery on his fractured right fibula. And though he said, “Absolutely . . . We would very much like to have Muhammad back in the organization,” Maccagnan said the Jets could “potentially” place the franchise tag on Wilkerson.

Harrison, their best run-stuffer, also is seeking a big payday. So how do the Jets plan to keep their defensive line together?

“In a perfect world, we would like very much to have Damon back in the organization,” Maccagnan said. “Hypothetically or philosophically, it’s not impossible.”

Although they lost in Week 17 and failed to make the playoffs, the Jets will look to build off their success. “We’re happy with the progress we made,” Maccagnan said of his team, which started 4-1 before a midseason slide dropped them to 5-5. “You’re hoping to be a team that competes for the playoffs and we came one game short, and that was disappointing. I felt good that we got closer to maybe being a team that could go in there and compete for a playoff spot every year.”

Marshall, Revis not in Pro Bowl. Marshall won’t play in the Pro Bowl on Jan. 31, a source told Newsday. He set franchise records with 109 catches and 1,502 receiving yards and tied for the league lead with 14 touchdowns . . . Cornerback Darrelle Revis also won’t make the trip to Honolulu. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers’ Jason Verrett will replace Revis, who was an alternate, because of shoulder soreness.

THE RECORD

Jets considering franchise tag for Muhammad Wilkerson (J.P. Pelzman) The Record January 14, 2016

http://www.northjersey.com/sports/jets-considering-franchise-tag-for-muhammad-wilkerson-1.1491899

FLORHAM PARK – Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan met the media Thursday with his ever-present cup of coffee at his side.

Football seasons end, but java season apparently does not. It’s not surprising, considering Maccagnan’s work hasn’t stopped as he tries to help his team take the next step in 2016.

Maccagnan’s free-agent spending spree and two shrewd trades resulted in a 10-6 record in 2015, but the Jets narrowly missed the playoffs. And there are plenty of decisions to make that likely will keep Maccagnan up at night, with or without caffeine.

“I probably won’t catch my breath until after the draft,” Maccagnan said.

Several important players will become free agents in March, including standout defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson and resurgent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Both players had career years in 2015.

Maccagnan said the Jets “absolutely” could use the franchise tag on one of their free agents, including Wilkerson, who had 12 sacks in 2015. He added the possibility of Wilkerson being franchised is “not a big secret.”

Page 5: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2016/01-January… · NJ ADVANCE MEDIA ... Here are some things to know from Maccagnan's state-of-the-franchise

The Jets have until March 7 to make that decision. If Wilkerson is franchised, he likely would make $15 million to $16 million in 2016, but the designation also would buy time for the Jets to try to reach a long-term deal with the Linden native.

Wilkerson suffered a fractured right fibula in the season-ending loss at Buffalo on Jan. 3, but Maccagnan indicated he didn’t think the injury would impact the Jets’ decisions about him. Maccagnan said the injury should take about six months for Wilkerson to rehab and Maccagnan expects him to be ready for training camp in the summer. If not, it’s possible Wilkerson could be placed on the physically unable to perform list to begin camp, Maccagnan said.

Maccagnan said, “We would very much like to have Muhammad back in the organization. How we manage to do that, time will tell.”

Fitzpatrick had a franchise-record 31 TD passes and 15 interceptions in 2015.

“We’d like very much to get him back, obviously based on how he played this year,” Maccagnan said. “But I don’t really want to get into the speculation aspect of it. I would simply leave it at — we’ll see how this thing works out.”

Another key free agent is nose tackle Damon Harrison, who is considered one of the better run-stuffers in the NFL.

“In a perfect world,” Maccagnan said, “we would like very much to have Damon back in the organization.”

But can they keep two free-agent defensive linemen in the fold?

“Hypothetically or philosophically, it’s not impossible,” Maccagnan said.

If Fitzpatrick is re-signed, who will be the No. 2 quarterback? Bryce Petty, a fourth-round pick in 2015, and former starter Geno Smith are on the roster. Smith is heading into the final season of his four-year rookie deal.

As for Smith, Maccagnan noted that he is “under contract,” and praised him for the way he handled the aftermath of the training-camp incident in which he had his jaw broken by then-teammate IK Enemkpali.

“I think Geno played well in the limited amount of time he was in there,” Maccagnan said of Smith, who relieved an injured Fitzpatrick at Oakland on Nov. 1.

As for Petty, the GM said he made “a lot of progress” in his rookie season and that the Jets are “very excited” to see how he will progress in the off-season.

REVIS OUT OF PRO BOWL: CB Darrelle Revis will not play in the Pro Bowl. The Chargers announced that Jason Verrett, the first alternate, ll replace Revis in the All-Star game in Hawaii on Jan. 31. The Chargers’ news release said that Revis was “injured.”

Revis reportedly bowed out because of soreness in his shoulder.

The Jets had no comment on why Revis wouldn’t play, but it’s worth noting that he wasn’t on the injury report leading up to the season finale and that he played the entire game against the Bills.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/15/sports/football/jets-general-manager-mike-maccagnan-hints-at-off-season-plans.html?ref=football&_r=0

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Jets General Manager Mike Maccagnan cautiously laid out his team’s off-season plans for the first time on Thursday, skimping on the details while he tiptoed around questions about the futures of soon-to-be free agents like Muhammad Wilkerson, Damon Harrison and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Maccagnan tried to keep his statements broad, vague and impassive. He hinted at what would come next for a franchise that, despite a 10-6 record, fell short of the postseason for a fifth straight year and does not have the salary-cap flexibility it enjoyed when Maccagnan arrived a year ago.

“Everybody in the league is trying to figure out what everybody else is doing,” Maccagnan said. “We have a lot of decisions to make. We’re still in the process of putting together our game plan, and how we view the free-agency market.”

In a lighthearted 30-minute session, Maccagnan was most candid while discussing his interest in re-signing the 33-year-old Fitzpatrick, who set a franchise record with 31 touchdown passes while earning just $3.25 million this season, a figure that is likely to soar in a new deal.

“We’d like very much to get him back, obviously,” Maccagnan said. “But we’ll see how things work out.”

Maccagnan was not quite as direct initially about the team’s intentions with Wilkerson, the Pro Bowl defensive end, saying he would generally like to keep all of the team’s impending free agents.

When asked directly if the Jets wanted Wilkerson back, Maccagnan decided he needed to restate his original answer and said the simple answer was “very much.”

“How we manage to do that,” Maccagnan added, “time will tell.”

Would it be possible for the team to retain all of its key members of the defensive line, Wilkerson and Harrison included?

“It’s not impossible,” Maccagnan said, sounding a bit like somebody trying to cheerfully assess a friend’s unrealistic chances of dating a supermodel. “Like anything, you can do many different things with how you manage the salary cap.”

Maccagnan also revealed that Wilkerson was expected to miss at least six months as he recovers from a fractured right fibula that he sustained in the season’s final game against Buffalo, a loss that prevented the Jets from making the playoffs. It remains unclear what impact the injury will have on Wilkerson’s free agency and his potential return to the Jets.

The Jets’ salary cap will be more restrictive than it was a season ago, when Maccagnan spent nearly $180 million on free-agent contracts in his first five months on the job. He suggested that this off-season would be considerably quieter than the last one, when wholesale changes included hiring Coach Todd Bowles, making the sixth pick in the draft (Leonard Williams) and acquiring stars like Darrelle Revis, Brandon Marshall and Antonio Cromartie.

Bowles, in his season-ending news conference, said he would like the team to get faster, and that will presumably be a key objective. Quarterback also remains a volatile position, particularly if the Jets are unable to re-sign Fitzpatrick, although Maccagnan offered encouraging words about both the rookie Bryce Petty and the backup Geno Smith, who is under contract for next season.

Page 7: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2016/01-January… · NJ ADVANCE MEDIA ... Here are some things to know from Maccagnan's state-of-the-franchise

Daily Clips Cont.

7 | P a g e

The Jets will hold the No. 20 overall pick in this year’s draft, and Maccagnan did not rule out the team’s selecting another quarterback.

“It’s such an important position, I think every N.F.L. team, with maybe a few exceptions, goes into the draft looking at that position as a position of interest,” he said. “We’re no different.”

Maccagnan spoke animatedly, trademark coffee in hand, but said he had not had time to reflect on what most would judge to be a successful one-year turnaround of the team. He deflected questions aimed at assessing his own performance. He also resisted the temptation to make too big a deal out of a first season that ultimately ended bitterly.

“We’re happy with the progress we made,” Maccagnan said. “You’re hoping to be a team that competes for the playoffs and we came up one game short, and that was disappointing.”

Jets CB Darrelle Revis to skip Pro Bowl because of sore shoulder (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York January 14, 2016

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/57975/jets-cb-darrelle-revis-to-skip-pro-bowl-because-of-undisclosed-injury

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis has withdrawn from the Pro Bowl because of shoulder soreness, according to a league source.

The news was delivered by the San Diego Chargers, who announced that Jason Verrett -- the first alternate -- will replace the injured Revis in the Jan. 31 all-star game.

This is interesting because Revis didn't appear on the Week 17 injury report and he played the entire game against the Buffalo Bills. The next day, he made no mention of an injury when discussing his un-Revis-like performance against Sammy Watkins.

The Jets declined to give out any information Thursday night when contacted about Revis' decision to pull out of the Pro Bowl. Revis' agent also was tight-lipped, directing queries to the Jets.

Weird.

Earlier in the day, general manager Mike Maccagnan discussed Revis during his end-of-the-season session with reporters. He was asked if the team is happy with the first-year return on its massive investment -- a five-year, $70 million contract, including $39 million fully guaranteed.

"I think so overall," he said. "Todd (Bowles) mentioned this the other day. I think Darrelle is a very good corner. As Todd said, sometimes you have good games and bad games. It comes with that position, the style of defense we play, too. But I'm very happy to have Darrelle back in the organization, not only for his ability as a player but what he brought to the team. ... I know it was a very aggressive move on our part, but I'm very happy with the results from it."

Analyzing GM's state-of-the-Jets, including Geno Smith's cloudy future (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York January 14, 2016

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/57971/analyzing-gms-state-of-the-jets-including-geno-smiths-cloudy-future

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- In a better-late-than-never, season-ending session with reporters, New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan gave a state-of-the-team update on Thursday. Most of the 30-minute sitdown focused on the upcoming offseason. Some thoughts and observations:

1. The Geno Smith clock is ticking: Reading between the lines, which is necessary with the always-measured Maccagnan, I came away with the impression Smith is far from entrenched in the team's 2016 plans. He's under contract, but we know that doesn't mean anything. Maccagnan said some nice things about Smith, going so far as to overstate his mediocre performance against the Oakland Raiders, but he stopped short of committing a roster spot.

Maccagnan said he wants "to see how Geno and Bryce [Petty] progress in the offseason, and go from there -- and that's assuming we're able to re-sign Ryan [Fitzpatrick]."

Translation: Smith will be expendable if Petty, entering his second year, is able to show he can be trusted as the No. 2.

The second-year GM seemed a bit uncomfortable when presented with this scenario: If Fitzpatrick bolts in free agency, how would you feel about Smith as your starter?

"Uh, I would say right now it would be interesting, you know," he said. "That's a question more to see how he does in the offseason."

Prediction: Smith's status will be an issue for the next few months because, heaven knows, the Jets won't provide any clarity.

2. Maccagnan is confident he can re-sign Fitzpatrick: Reiterating what Todd Bowles said at the end of the season, Maccagnan said he'd "like very much to get him back, obviously, based on the way he played this year." The Jets want Fitzpatrick, and his value is greater to them than any other team. I'd be surprised if he's not signed before the start of free agency.

3. Muhammad Wilkerson will get the franchise tag: No, Maccagnan didn't come out and say it, but he strongly suggested it will happen if they can't agree on a long-term contract. The new twist in the story is Wilkerson's surgically repaired broken leg, which will require a six-month rehab, according to the Jets. Maccagnan downplayed the injury as being a potential factor in negotiations, but we'll see. The Jets have been dragging their feet for several months, and the injury could provide a built-in excuse to buy more time with the tag.

Wilkerson won't be happy, of course. No player wants the restriction of the franchise tag. They might not see him in the flesh until training camp.

4. The Jets are hungry for "Snacks," but ...: Bowles has made it clear he wants to re-sign talented nose tackle Damon Harrison, who, like Wilkerson, is headed to free agency. Maccagnan echoed that sentiment, saying, "In a perfect world, we'd like to have Damon back in the organization."

Thing is, the perfect world happened last offseason, when Maccagnan stepped into the ideal salary-cap situation -- endless riches to spend. It's an imperfect world now, meaning there will be serious cap restrictions. Maccagnan claimed "it's not impossible" to keep the talented defensive line together but didn't sound confident. If he can retain Harrison and Wilkerson, along with Fitzpatrick, it'll be a winning offseason.

5. Bowles and Maccagnan are opposites: For Bowles, it was all about making the playoffs. That was the measuring stick for the season. Maccagnan said it was "disappointing" to fall short in the final game, but

Page 9: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2016/01-January… · NJ ADVANCE MEDIA ... Here are some things to know from Maccagnan's state-of-the-franchise

he didn't convey disappointment. He said he's "happy with the progress we've made," adding, "I kind of felt good that we started to become closer to being a team that could go in there and compete for a playoff spot every year." Maccagnan is the big-picture guy, and maybe his approach complements the win-now Bowles, butcompeting for a playoff spot won't cut it anymore. They should've made it this year. The honeymoon is over.

Jets to try to re-sign free agent Wilkerson despite his leg surgery (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York January 14, 2016

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/14570905/new-york-jets-gm-says-muhammad-wilkerson-6-months-leg-surgery

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets expect Pro Bowl defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson to miss six months with a surgically repaired broken leg, but they still hope to re-sign to soon-to-be free agent, general manager Mike Maccagnan said Thursday.

"The simple answer is yes, we'd very much like to have Muhammad back in the organization," Maccagnan said at his season-ending sit-down with reporters.

Wilkerson fractured his right fibula in the season-ending loss to the Buffalo Bills, and he underwent surgery a few days later. Until Thursday, the team hadn't revealed a timetable for his recovery.

The timing is terrible for Wilkerson, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent. But there is virtually no chance of him reaching the open market. Maccagnan strongly suggested that Wilkerson will receive the franchise tag if the Jets can't sign him to a long-term contract before the March 7 deadline.

Maccagnan said the injury will have a minimal impact on Wilkerson's contract situation.

"He should be ready for camp," he said, mentioning the possibility of the physically-unable-to-perform list for the start of training camp in late July.

The two sides tried to negotiate a long-term contract before the season, but they never got close to an agreement. Wilkerson played for $6.97 million, the amount of his fifth-year option. He recorded a career-high 12 sacks to earn his first Pro Bowl selection.

Maccagnan was light-lipped with regard to the team's offseason plans, but he reiterated what coach Todd Bowles said at the end of the season: The Jets want to re-sign quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who started every game and set the team record for touchdown passes (31).

The general manager was less definitive on the future of backup quarterback Geno Smith, who is under contract for 2016. He said he wants to "see how Geno and Bryce [Petty] progress in the offseason and go from there, and that's assuming we're able to re-sign Ryan."

Maccagnan also said he'd like to re-sign nose tackle Damon Harrison, another pending free agent, but he hinted that salary-cap constraints could be a factor.

The Jets finished 10-6 under the new regime, headed by Maccagnan and Bowles, but they tarnished the season by blowing a playoff spot with the season-ending loss to the Bills. Maccagnan called it a "disappointing" finish but added: "We're happy with the progress we've made."

Jets GM hints at $16M tag to delay Mo Wilkerson decision (Brian Costello) New York Post January 14, 2016

http://nypost.com/2016/01/14/jets-gm-hints-at-16m-tag-to-delay-mo-wilkerson-decision/

Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson is expected to be out for six months as he recovers from a broken leg, but the team still wants to keep him and may use the franchise tag to do it.

Wilkerson broke his right fibula in the team’s final game in Buffalo on Jan. 3. He had surgery last week to repair the leg and is expected to make a full recovery. Wilkerson is scheduled to become a free agent in March. If the Jets cannot sign him to a long-term contract, they are expected to place the franchise tag on him for an estimated $16 million.

“The simple answer is we would very much like to have Muhammad back in the organization,” Maccagnan said. “Now how we manage to do that, time will tell.”

The two sides could not reach a deal last offseason, and Wilkerson cut off contract talks when the season began. They were far apart in contract talks at the time. Wilkerson put together a huge season, registering 12 sacks and making his first Pro Bowl, presumably driving his asking price up. Now, the Jets must decide whether to come close to what he is asking for or simply use the tag to buy more time.

“Absolutely we would consider using the franchise tag,” Maccagnan said of tagging someone in general and then got specific about Wilkerson. “I know it always pertains back to Mo. Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, if we get to that point we’ll do what’s in the best interests of our team.

“We would potentially, yeah. It’s not a big secret or anything like that.”

The Jets face a tricky situation with their talented defensive line. Wilkerson and nose tackle Damon Harrison can both become free agents in March. Sheldon Richardson can hit free agency in 2018, and rookie Leonard Williams is expected to be a longtime starter.

Maccagnan said it’s not impossible to keep them all together. Jets coach Todd Bowles expressed his desire to keep Harrison at the end of the season. Maccagnan echoed that Thursday.

“In a perfect world, we’d like very much to have Damon back in the organization,” he said. “I’ve talked to Todd about that. We’re both in agreement on his value. It’s just a question, being a potential free agent, if we can make it work.”

Maccagnan was asked for his evaluation of cornerback Darrelle Revis’ first year back with the Jets after they signed him to a five-year, $70 million contract last March.

“I think Darrelle is a very good corner,” Maccagnan said. “As Todd said, sometimes they have good games and bad games and that comes with that position, the style of defense we play, too. I’m very happy we have Darrelle back in the organization, not just from his ability as a player but also from what he brought to the team. … I know it was a very aggressive move on our part, what we did, but I’m very happy with the results.”

Revis will skip the Pro Bowl because of shoulder soreness, according to a league source.

Maccagnan did not answer many specific questions about pending free agents, saying ideally the Jets would keep all of their free agents. He also declined to speculate on asking D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Antonio Cromartie to take pay cuts to clear salary-cap space.

The Jets question lurking behind Ryan Fitzpatrick’s status (Brian Costello) New York Post January 14, 2016

http://nypost.com/2016/01/14/the-jets-question-lurking-behind-ryan-fitzpatricks-status/

The top question as the Jets enter this offseason centers around the same position it usually does: quarterback.

But, unlike most years with the Jets, it appears the team has a solid answer to the question. It is just a matter of re-signing Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is scheduled to become a free agent in March.

“We’d like very much to get him back, obviously based on how he played this year, but I don’t really want to get into the speculation aspect of it,” Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said Thursday. “I would simply leave it at: We’ll see how this thing works out.”

Fitzpatrick and the Jets have made no secret of their desire for another year together. Why would they?

Fitzpatrick, 33, broke the team’s record for touchdowns in a season with 31 and engineered the best offense the Jets have ever had if you look at total yards gained. For Fitzpatrick, it is a chance to stay in the same place after playing for four different teams in the past four seasons.

It will be up to Maccagnan and Fitzpatrick’s agents to work out a contract, but that is not expected to be an issue.

The bigger question for the Jets at the position is about who will back up Fitzpatrick. Jets coach Todd Bowles already declared Fitzpatrick the starter if he returns. So what happens to Geno Smith? The former starter received a lukewarm endorsement from Maccagnan, who said Smith is “under contract,” words a player never wants to hear a GM say. That is basically a nice way of saying he’s on the team for now.

“With Geno, he’s under contract,” Maccagnan said. “We like the progress he’s made and, quite frankly, how he handled the situation in the summer. Right now, I’d say going forward we’re going to see how Geno and Bryce [Petty] progress with the offseason and go from there. That’s assuming we are able to re-sign Ryan.”

What if the Jets can’t re-sign Fitzpatrick?

“You have to be prepared for all potentialities,” Maccagnan said.

That could lead to the Jets looking for a new quarterback or turning back to Smith, who was expected to be the starter in 2015 until IK Enemkpali’s fist intervened.

One of Maccagnan’s most interesting answers came when he was asked how he would feel about Smith being the starter.

“I would say right now it would be interesting,” Maccagnan said after a pause. “That’s a question more to see how they do in the offseason. I think Geno played well in the limited amount of time he was in there during the regular season.”

Maccagnan praised Fitzpatrick, whom the Jets acquired in a trade from Houston last March, for his role in mentoring Smith and Petty, who did not play at all as a rookie. Petty likely won’t get a chance to compete for the starting job this year, but he may be able to win the No. 2 job with a strong offseason.

“Bryce has made a lot of progress,” Maccagnan said. “We’re kind of excited to have another offseason with him.”

With Petty on the team as a developmental quarterback, the Jets probably won’t target a quarterback in the draft, but Maccagnan acknowledged that unless you have Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers, you are always looking at quarterbacks.

“It’s such an important position that every NFL team probably goes into the draft, with maybe a few exceptions of people who have really well-established quarterbacks, always looking at that position as a position of interest,” he said. “So, we’ll be no different than them.”

Jets' Darrelle Revis, Brandon Marshall won't play in Pro Bowl, per reports (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media January 14, 2016

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/01/jets_darrelle_revis_brandon_marshall_wont_play_in.html#incart_river_index

Two Jets players who had been selected to the Pro Bowl—cornerback Darrelle Revis and wide receiver Brandon Marshall—will not play after all and will instead be replaced by alternates.

That means that three of the four Jets selected for the 2016 Pro Bowl will not play. Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson already had to beg off after breaking his leg in the Jan. 3 season finale at the Bills.

Which leaves center Nick Mangold as the only Jets player headed to Hawaii. Mangold had been an alternate, but he's going because the Dolphins' Mike Pouncey is injured.

The Pro Bowl is scheduled for Jan. 31 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.

Newsday's Kimberley A. Martin reported Thursday that Marshall, who set team records with 109 catches and 1,502 receiving yards, and who tied the team record (and led the league) with 14 touchdown catches, would have to pull out of the Pro Bowl.

No reason was given for Marshall's decision not to play, though he did recently admit he somehow played through a high ankle sprain during the season.

A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to NJ Advance Media that Revis would not play. Another person with knowledge of the situation said Revis had a sore shoulder, but that surgery wouldn't be required. Both individuals spoke to NJ Advance Media on condition of anonymity.

Revis did play all but one snap of the finale in Buffalo, and there was no subsequent indication he was hurting.

Would Mike Maccagnan be comfortable with Geno Smith starting for Jets? (Dom Costentino) NJ Advanced Media January 14, 2016

FLORHAM PARK — The question was a hypothetical, and an unlikely one at that, considering there's mutual interest between the Jets and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick for next season.

Page 13: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2016/01-January… · NJ ADVANCE MEDIA ... Here are some things to know from Maccagnan's state-of-the-franchise

Fitzpatrick is due to become a free agent in March, but he wants to be back, and both head coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan are on record as saying they want him back.

But the two sides still have to agree to contract terms that are mutually beneficial. And negotiations can be unpredictable. So, then, the question: What would the Jets do if Fitzpatrick were to hit free agency and sign elsewhere?

"When we get into this process, you have to prepared for all potentialities," Maccagnan said Thursday, keeping his cards close to his vest. "I don't really want to get into whether we're signing another player, or this, that, and the other thing."

The Jets do have a quarterback under contract for 2016 with two years' experience as a starter, of course. But would Maccagnan be comfortable with Geno Smith as the No. 1 option?

"I would say, right now, it would be interesting," Maccagnan said. "That's a question more to see how we do in the offseason."

In other words: No.

The Jets likely are going to come to terms with Fitzpatrick. But if they don't, they also could draft another quarterback, though Maccagnan wouldn't reveal whether the Jets plan to target a quarterback in the draft, since doing so would give away his draft strategy.

Either way, they clearly don't look forward to going back to Smith, who lost his job after getting punched by a then-teammate during training camp. Smith has just one year remaining on his rookie contract. Maccagnan hadn't given him a ringing endorsement back in November, either.

The Jets are expected to have anywhere from $14 million to $20 million in salary-cap space in 2016, and cutting Smith would only free up an additional $1 million or so in cap savings.

Anything can happen, but it still seems possible Smith might at least get another shot to earn the backup job during training camp. But there's certainly no longer a guarantee he'll even be on the roster at the start of the 2016 regular season.

Everything Jets' Mike Maccagnan said about Mo Wilkerson: franchise tag, contract, trade, leg (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media August 29, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/01/jets_mike_maccagnan.html#incart_river_index

During his season wrap-up press conference Thursday, Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan addressed several points about star defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson.

Wilkerson just finished his fifth season, the best of his career, as he had 12 sacks. He is due to become a free agent in March, but the Jets could apply the franchise tag to him, which would let them control his rights for one more year.

The Jets could also apply the tag and trade Wilkerson. Or they could apply the tag and use it as a negotiating starting point/deadline for signing Wilkerson to a long-term lucrative contract. And Wilkerson very much wants that contract.

All options are on the table, Maccagnan said Thursday.

Page 14: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2016/01-January… · NJ ADVANCE MEDIA ... Here are some things to know from Maccagnan's state-of-the-franchise

He wants Wilkerson back, but he didn't guarantee it would happen. Maccagnan was mostly coy about Wilkerson's situation, because he said he didn't want to reveal too much about the Jets' plans to other organizations.

"Needless to say, Muhammad played very well this year," Maccagnan said. "In a perfect world, we'd keep everybody on the roster."

When pressed, Maccagnan spoke more definitively. He said he "absolutely" wants Wilkerson back, adding, "The simple answer is we would very much like to have Muhammad back in the organization. How we manage to do that, time will tell.

If the Jets apply the franchise tag to Wilkerson, that would pay him about $16 million for 2016 — essentially a one-year contract. There is also a July 15 deadline for players who receive the franchise tag. By that time, a team must determine if it will sign the player to a multi-year contract. The deadline could spur action.

Teams can apply the franchise tag any time between Feb. 16 and March 1. Are the Jets considering going that route with Wilkerson?

"Potentially, yeah," Maccagnan said. "I mean, it's not a big secret or anything."

The Jets' standout nose tackle, Damon Harrison, also is a pending free agent. Maccagnan said "it's not impossible" for the Jets to perhaps keep their entire defensive line together this offseason.

Wilkerson enters the offseason rehabbing a broken lower right leg bone. He sustained the injury in the Jan. 3 season-ending loss at Buffalo. Maccagnan doesn't expect the injury to impact Wilkerson in the long term. And Maccagnan said he doesn't believe the injury will affect his contract-related evaluation of Wilkerson.

"It's about a six-month rehab process," Maccagnan said, but that's not set in stone. "It's a significant injury, and there always can be setbacks that you can't anticipate. But that's kind of the timeframe."

Maccagnan said there's a possibility Wilkerson could begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list, but it looks like his injury won't jeopardize his Week 1 availability for the 2016 regular season.

Jetting in to general manager Mike Maccagnan's brain (Manish Mehta) New York Daily News January 15, 2016

We venture inside Mike Maccagnan’s head with this disclaimer: Forgive him for the half-truths, generalities and overall nothingness that spilled out of his mouth during Thursday’s season-ending press conference.

Maccagnan is a genuinely nice guy — he probably apologizes to bugs right before dousing them with Extra-Strength Raid — but NFL general managers don’t exactly divulge their offseason plans to the public. So, we’ll sift through the company lines and reveal what he really thinks about the hot-button topics facing the Jets in the coming months.

Do you expect to re-sign impending free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick?

Page 15: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2016/01-January… · NJ ADVANCE MEDIA ... Here are some things to know from Maccagnan's state-of-the-franchise

What he said: “We’d like very much to get him back… We’ll see how this thing works out.”

What he thought: “We better or we’re kind of screwed. We need to buy more time to develop Bryce Petty and/or draft a potential franchise quarterback in the next year or two.”

What do you see for Bryce Petty and Geno Smith in the future?

What he said: “Bryce has made a lot of progress. We’re kind of excited to have another offseason with him... With Geno, he’s under contract. We like the progress he’s made.”

What he thought: “Bryce has made a lot of progress. We’re kind of excited to have another offseason with him…. Geno is toast.”

Are you targeting a quarterback in the draft?

What he said: “That’s always a big question. The draft is such an opportunity to add players at any position.”

What he thought: “Duh.”

Did the 10-win season exceed your expectations?

What he said: “Our goal was try to make ourselves a better team and ideally build a team that could consistently compete for the playoffs… We’re happy with the progress we made.”

What he thought: “Considering the trash that was left behind when I got the job... yes.”

Do you want to sign impending free-agent DL Muhammad Wilkerson to a long-term deal?

What he said: “I would kind of like to defer on those questions at this point in time.”

What he thought: “Sure, if Wilkerson wants to take 65 cents on the dollar. But I really want to tag-and-trade him for a Top 10 pick in the 2016 draft. Know of any interested teams?”

Did you get a good return in the first year of your $70 million investment in Darrelle Revis?

What he said: “I’m very happy we have Darrelle back in the organization... I know it’s a very aggressive move on our part with what we did, but I’m very happy with the results.”

What he thought: “Everyone can plainly see that Revis is not the same player he once was. We badly overpaid. We get it. Thankfully, we can cut him after the 2017 season if need be. Get off my back, Mehta. You’re far from perfect. Believe me, I’ve read your stuff.”

What’s your assessment of the offensive line?

What he said: “I thought the offensive line did some good things.”

What he thought: “WANTED: Right tackle.”

Are you going to approach certain players like D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Antonio Cromartie about taking pay cuts?

What he said: “Those are kinds of questions that will work themselves out over time.”

What he thought: “Brick? Obvi. Cro? Maybe... or just cut him.”

Todd Bowles was effusive recently when discussing impending free agent nose tackle Damon Harrison. How much of a priority will it be to re-sign him?

What he said: “In a perfect world, we’d like very much to have Damon back.”

What he thought: “I have a feeling that Snacks might wind up being too pricey for us. Looking for someone to break the news to Todd. Any takers?”

How would you assess your first draft class?

What he said: “For the most part, we like the guys we drafted.”

What he thought: “It was a hell of a lot better than the Idzik 12.”

There’s a school of thought that there’s no way you can financially keep that defensive line (Wilkerson, Richardson, Harrison and Williams) together.

What he said: “It’s not impossible.”

What he thought: “It’s impossible.”

If you don’t re-sign Fitzpatrick, would you be comfortable with Geno?

What he said: “I think Geno, again, played well in the limited amount of time he was in there during the regular season.”

What he thought: “Hell no.”

How do you think you did in your first year as GM?

What he said: “Honestly, I’ve been so busy. I haven’t even had a chance to think about it.”

What he thought: “A-plus if we’re grading on a curve. Did you see what the last guy did?”

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan offers few answers on QB Ryan Fitzpatrick but would like ‘to get him back’ (Seth Walder) New York Daily News January 14, 2016

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/jets-gm-offers-answers-qb-ryan-fitzpatrick-article-1.2497455

Mike Maccagnan needs a quarterback. But at least he knows — and probably can get — the one he wants.

It still feels like Ryan Fitzpatrick is the Jets’ quarterback at this point, after leading Gang Green to a 10-win season, but technically, he’s about to be a free agent. Unless the Jets can work out a deal with him first.

“I’d say, obviously Ryan’s going to be a free agent,” Maccagnan said Thursday at his season-ending press conference in Florham Park. “We’d like very much to get him back, obviously, based on how he played this year.”

But will Fitzpatrick be back? That, Maccagnan wouldn’t speculate on. And that makes the potential return of the bearded veteran quarterback the biggest question facing the Jets right now.

Fitzpatrick wants to come back. He’s said so. And that, combined with his success here, makes him coming back the likeliest of scenarios this offseason. And if he does come back, he will be the starter, Todd Bowles has said.

But what happens if the Jets aren’t able to reach a deal with Fitzpatrick? Then what?

“We have to be prepared for all eventualities,” Maccagnan said. “I don’t really want to get into the, you know, if we’re going to sign another player, this, that or the thing. We’ll try and do what’s in the best interests of the organization going forward to be as competitive as we can be.”

Page 17: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2016/01-January… · NJ ADVANCE MEDIA ... Here are some things to know from Maccagnan's state-of-the-franchise

He was more calm about it than Jets fans will be if somehow Fitzpatrick ends up wearing another uniform next season. In that event, would that make, gulp, Geno Smith the Jets’ starting quarterback again? And would Maccagnan be comfortable with that?

“I would say, right now, it would be interesting,” Maccagnan said. “That’s a question more to see how we do in the offseason. I think Geno, again, played well in the limited amount of time he was in there in the regular season.”

That’s hardly a ringing endorsement for Smith. Maccagnan did say he thought Smith “did some good things” playing against the Raiders while filling in for the then-injured Fitzpatrick. However, the Jets did lose that game.

The Jets’ backup quarterback, who was sidelined after IK Enemkpali punched him in training camp, is under contract for next season but it is not a lock that he’ll be on the team. If the Jets re-sign Fitzpatrick and elect to draft a quarterback this year, that could easily make Smith the odd man out. Bryce Petty, a fourth-round pick in 2015, did not play this season but was drafted by the current regime and the GM said Thursday the young quarterback “has made a lot of progress.”

Maccagnan was hesitant to reveal nearly any of his plans for the offseason, but he certainly wouldn’t eliminate the possibility of picking up another QB in the draft.

“It’s such an important position, I think every NFL team probably goes into the draft — maybe with a few exceptions of people who have really established quarterbacks — always looking at that position as a position of interest,” Maccagnan said. “We’ll be no different from them.”

Wilkerson at Center of Jets’ Busy Off-Season (Stu Woo) Wall Street Journal January 14, 2016

http://www.wsj.com/articles/wilkerson-at-center-of-jets-busy-off-season-1452811403?tesla=y

Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan wants to re-sign Muhammad Wilkerson and said the team would consider giving the Pro Bowl defensive end a one-year “franchise tag” deal that would pay him about $15 million.

But Maccagnan, whose team went 10-6 in his first season, was vague about the details in his Thursday news conference to wrap up the 2015 season, saying that he didn’t want to tip off other franchises about the Jets’ plans.

The general manager said he also wants to re-sign quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who set a franchise record with 31 touchdown passes. “We’d like very much to get him back, based on how he played this year,” Maccagnan said. “But I don’t really want to get into the speculation aspect of it.”

Maccagnan said he thought it was possible to retain both Wilkerson and defensive tackle Damon Harrison, who is also set to become a free agent. That would keep intact an imposing defensive line that also includes Sheldon Richardson and Leonard Williams.

Maccagnan said Wilkerson should recover from the broken leg suffered in the season finale against Buffalo in about six months and that the injury shouldn’t impact contract negotiations. The general manager said Wilkerson played well in 2015, but it was unclear whether the team would offer him a one-year franchise-tag deal or a long-term contract. “At the end of the day, yes, we would very much like to
