When it comes to quarterbacks, the more the merrier for Mike Maccagnan.

While making the radio rounds on Tuesday, the Jets general manager said that he’s not opposed to keeping four quarterbacks on the roster — even after training camp.

“The simple answer to your question is, yes, Mike,” Maccagnan told Mike Francesa on his WFAN show Tuesday afternoon. “ . . . Quarterbacks are important, obviously, in the league in general. But in a perfect world, I think you’d like to take your time and develop quarterbacks, have them almost in the pipeline, basically. So that’s kind of our approach to this whole thing.

The Jets had backups Geno Smith and Bryce Petty on their roster before drafting Christian Hackenberg on Friday in the second round of the NFL Draft. The team, however, is still trying to re-sign veteran free agent Ryan Fitzpatrick, their 2015 starter.

Maccagnan made it clear that he didn’t go into Day 2 of the draft expecting to take Hackenberg. Asked by Francesa about “reports” that he was “obsessed” with selecting the former Penn State quarterback, the Jets GM said he wasn’t “locked” into taking him at all. Instead, that’s how the “board unfolded.”

Maccagnan added that negotiations with Fitzpatrick’s camp haven’t changed and are ongoing. With the 33-year-old unsigned, Smith will be taking first-team reps to start OTAs.

Some believe the Jets will part ways with Smith if Fitzpatrick is re-signed. Unlike Petty, who was Maccagnan’s fourth-round selection in 2015, Smith was a 2013 second-round pick of John Idzik, the previous Jets general manager.

But Maccagnan denied Smith will automatically be shown the door.

“I would say that would be inaccurate,” he said. “ . . . With Ryan out, Geno is our No. 1 quarterback. Bryce, I assume, would be No. 2 and Christian would be No. 3 right now.

“We weren’t here, but I know Geno was thrust into the fire pretty early in his rookie season and the second season, and then last season he had a really good offseason until the unfortunate incident in the locker room [with IK Enemkpali].”

Though Maccagnan acknowledged Smith is “a bit of an unknown,” he said this offseason will be important for the fourth-year quarterback.

“I understand when you make decisions, everybody thinks there are ramifications in reference to other people on your roster,” the GM said. “But we like Geno Smith. And Geno’s done a good job for us and this will be a big offseason for him going forward. And we’ll see how he develops. We like the idea of having Fitz, in a perfect world, back here in the organization with Geno and our two young quarterbacks.”

Four! Jets GM not opposed to keeping a quarterback quartet (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York May 3, 2016

Two's company. Three's a crowd. Four?

That would be so Jets.

General manager Mike Maccagnan, commenting on the New York Jets' potentially-crowded quarterback situation, said Tuesday they have discussed the possibility of going into the regular season with four quarterbacks on the roster.

That's assuming they add a fourth. Right now, they have Geno Smith, Bryce Petty and rookie Christian Hackenberg. They hope to re-sign starter Ryan Fitzpatrick.

"In a perfect world, I think if it's in the best interest of the team at the end of training camp that we carry four quarterbacks, then we carry four quarterbacks," Maccagnan said on WFAN radio. "It's not

unprecedented in the NFL. It's been done before. To me, it's a position where you have to take some time to really invest, grow, and develop players."

He's right, it has been done before, but it's unconventional. The last team to open the season with four quarterbacks was the Washington Redskins in 2013, according to ESPN Stats & Information. They had Robert Griffin III, Kirk Cousins, Rex Grossman and Pat White. That year, the Minnesota Vikings had Christian Ponder, Matt Cassel and McLeod Bethel-Thompson, plus quarterback-turned-receiver Joe Webb.

If there's a franchise familiar with a crowded quarterback room, it's the Jets. Since 2001, they opened three different seasons with four quarterbacks. Let's take a trip down memory lane.

2009: Mark Sanchez, Kellen Clemens, Erik Ainge, Kevin O'Connell.

2008: Brett Favre, Kellen Clemens, Erik Ainge, Brett Ratliff.

2003: Vinny Testaverde, Chad Pennington, Brooks Bollinger, Marquel Blackwell.

As for this year, Maccagnan is answering quarterback questions the way you'd expect.

It's good business to say they want to keep all four because it helps their bargaining position in case they decide to trade one.

"We like the idea of having Fitz, in a perfect world, back here in the organization with Geno and our young two quarterbacks," he said.

Prepare for a lot of quarterback chatter over the next few months.

Jets 'strongly considered' trading 1st-round pick to Dallas Cowboys (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media May 3, 2016

Yes, the Cowboys attempted to trade for the Jets' first-round pick in last week's draft, but the Jets turned them down, just as Peter King of The MMQB reported.

Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan just acknowledged he almost pulled the trigger on the deal.

Analyzing Jets' 2016 draftHere's what we make of Ohio State's Darron Lee, Penn State's Christian Hackenberg, and Georgia's Jordan Jenkins. 5/1/16 (Video by Darryl Slater | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com)

"The deal was a deal we strongly considered," Maccagnan told Mike Francesa on Tuesday on WFAN radio. "And probably came fairly close to it. But at the end of the day, we liked the player at [No.] 20, and felt good about taking him and going forward."

"The player" would be Darron Lee, a linebacker from Ohio State the Jets plan to use in a hybrid role like the one head coach Todd Bowles once carved out for Deone Bucannon of the Cardinals, back when Bowles was the Cardinals' defensive coordinator.

The Cowboys selected running back Ezekiel Elliott No. 4 overall. But King's report in The MMQB said Dallas wanted another crack at a first-round pick to select quarterback Paxton Lynch, whom owner Jerry Jones had the hots for.

According to King, the Cowboys reached out to a number of teams drafting in the teens and 20s, offering a second- and third-round pick (Nos. 34 and 67). They found no takers.

The draft class will create some major competition for the guys on this list.

Lynch wound up slipping to No. 26, where the Broncos traded up with the Seahawks to get him.

The Jets drafted Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg a day later in the second round. But Maccagnan had told WFAN's Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton the Jets were "repeatedly" looking to trade down that day.

Maccagnan wouldn't say whether he turned down the deal because the Cowboys' offer wasn't rich enough—though he strongly suggested that was the case, given how much the Jets like Lee.

"It was a situation where, maybe if there's different players available and Lee wasn't available, maybe it would have been a trade we would have considered [even] more strongly," Maccagnan said. "Everybody uses trade charts, so you try to figure out what's fair. At the end of the day, we felt it would be better in our interests to hold onto the pick and take the player."

Jets could keep 4 quarterbacks on active roster in 2016, says Mike Maccagnan (Darryl Slater) NJ Advanced Media May 3, 2016

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/05/jets_could_keep_4_quarterbacks_on_active_roster_in.html#incart_river_index

The Jets could keep four quarterbacks on their active roster in 2016, general manager Mike Maccagnan said Tuesday during an interview with WFAN's Mike Francesa.

"The simple answer to your question is yes," Maccagnan said when asked if the Jets could carry four quarterbacks. "We even discussed that a little bit [internally]. At the end of the day, quarterbacks are important, obviously in the league in general. But in a perfect world, I think you'd like to take your time to develop [young] quarterbacks and have them almost in the pipeline, basically.

"So that's kind of our approach to this whole thing. If it's in the best interest of the team at the end of training camp that we carry four quarterbacks, then we carry four quarterbacks. It's not unprecedented in the NFL. It's been done before. To me, it's a position where you have to take some time to really invest, grow, and develop players."

Right now, the Jets have Geno Smith, Bryce Petty, and second-round pick Christian Hackenberg. They're still trying to re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick, their starter from last year. He remains a free agent.

If Fitzpatrick re-signs, they're obviously going to have him and Hackenberg on the roster next season. But what about Smith and Petty? Which one would be the odd man out? Maybe neither, according to Maccagnan.

How we see things.

Smith would give the Jets a game-tested backup behind Fitzpatrick. Maccagnan spoke earlier Tuesday, also on WFAN, about how he likes Smith as a No. 2, if Fitzpatrick re-signs. Maccagnan told Francesa it is "inaccurate" to assume that Smith is now finished with the Jets, simply because they drafted Hackenberg.

"This will be a big offseason for [Smith] going forward, and we'll see how he develops," Maccagnan said. "We like the idea of having Fitz, in a perfect world, back here in the organization with Geno and our young two quarterbacks."

5 | P a g e

It would be a dicey proposition for the Jets to enter 2016 with Fitzpatrick, Petty, and Hackenberg. Petty has never played in an NFL regular season game. The Jets drafted him in Round 4 last year.

But would the Jets give up on Petty a little more than one year after they drafted him? They've said ever since last year's draft that he's a long-term project player.

A lot of Petty's future with the Jets, it seems, depends on what he does during spring practices and training camp. That'll give Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles a better idea about how their quarterback pecking order looks.

Maccagnan hasn't formally ruled out Hackenberg perhaps playing in 2016. But based on all of Maccagnan's comments about ideally developing young quarterbacks at a methodical rate, it sure sounds like he'd rather not force Hackenberg to start as a rookie. Having him watch and learn from Fitzpatrick would be a far more preferable situation for the Jets.

Jets 'repeatedly' tried to trade back before drafting Christian Hackenberg (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media May 3, 2016

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/05/jets_repeatedly_tried_to_trade_back_before_draftin.html#incart_river_index

To be clear: The Jets got their man when they selected quarterback Christian Hackenberg in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

But they were also looking to trade out of their spot (No. 51 overall) to accumulate more picks, which general manager Mike Maccagnan did say was something of a standard procedure.

"Every time you come up to pick a player in a spot, what we normally do—we do our due diligence—we look into maybe trading back, getting more picks," Maccagnan said Tuesday morning on WFAN's "Boomer & Carton Show."

"We tried that repeatedly during the day, weren't able to really do that. And then when we came to that position, that point in time, Christian was on our board."

The Jets are still counting on re-signing Ryan Fitzpatrick and having him start, with Geno Smith as the No. 2. Then there's (in no particular order at the moment) Hackenberg and Bryce Petty, last year's developmental fourth-round pick.

Maccagnan has said that he would like to have Hackenberg get acclimated by sitting for a while, but he also hasn't ruled out the possibility of Hackenberg playing as a rookie. It all depends on how quickly Hackenberg develops and matures.

The draft class will create some major competition for the guys on this list.

There were a number of trades in this year's draft. Peter King of The MMQB reported that the Cowboys were looking to acquire a pick in the teens and 20s in the first round so they could draft Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch.

The Jets were one of those teams, King reported, but they said no to the Cowboys' offer of a second- and third-round pick (Nos. 34 and 67) for the Jets' spot at No. 20. Maccagnan later told WFAN's Mike Francesa why he kept that pick and drafted Ohio State linebacker Darron Lee.

The Cowboys were ultimately unable to make that deal. The Broncos wound up trading up with the Seahawks from No. 31 to No. 26 to select Lynch.

The scouting reports on Hackenberg run the gamut from positive to negative, but the Jets put a lot of effort into vetting him.

They just like him as a prospect, simple as that.

"There were some other players that we had rated right about the same or slightly below," Maccagnan said of Hackenberg. "The big thing you have to do in the draft is you look at the player, you look at what you think the potential he could possibly develop into. And then you kind of assess the risk.

"With him, we liked him as a prospect. And we know there's a lot of things, like there's risk involved—there's risk involved with every player in the draft—but we also thought the upside and potential for him was pretty high."

Jets' Mike Maccagnan likes Geno Smith as backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media May 3, 2016

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/05/mike_maccagnan_geno_smith_jets.html#incart_river_index

Presuming quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick re-signs with the Jets, he'll return as their starter. Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles have said so.

Last year's backup, Geno Smith, is the No. 1 guy right now, since Fitzpatrick remains a free agent. Maccagnan on Tuesday, during an interview with WFAN's Craig Carton and Boomer Esiason, made it clear that he likes Smith as a game-tested backup for Fitzpatrick, once (if) the latter returns to the Jets.

The Jets' other quarterback options are second-year pro Bryce Petty (a Round 4 pick last year) and rookie Christian Hackenberg (a Round 2 pick this year). At this point, neither appears ready to be an NFL backup.

"These are guys that take time to develop," Maccagnan said of the younger quarterbacks. "So you want to have somebody in the pipeline or multiple guys in the pipeline that you can work with, and that you feel good about going forward.

"I'm kind of excited to see how Geno does this offseason. I like having him, as of right now, as our No. 2 quarterback. Every [starting] job you can go out there and compete for. When Ryan is not here, he's the No. 1 quarterback, so he'll get more reps going forward here in the offseason. And we'll see how it goes.

"[Fitzpatrick] is the incumbent starter and Geno is the No. 2, who is obviously going to be competing with [Fitzpatrick]. And then we'll see how the young guys are. ... It's a good group of guys to work with, in terms of being a competitive room. And we'll let it work itself out. It just increases competition."

How we see things.

Maccagnan continues to sound hopeful about Smith, the Jets' 2013-14 starter. Smith, a Round 2 pick in 2013, lost his starting job to Fitzpatrick in training camp last year after then-teammate IK Enemkpali slugged Smith in the face, during a locker room dispute, and broke his jaw.

"I do like Geno personally," Maccagnan said. "I think, ability-wise, he has skills and he has potential to be a good player in this league. The one thing, to sort of remind everybody, Geno was kind of thrown into the fire early. Players develop at different paces. Even last year, Geno had a very good offseason with us.

"Then the whole thing happened with the training camp incident with IK, which really more or less negated any chance of him competing for the job. Ryan went in there and did well, so there really wasn't a chance for Geno to get back in."

Smith has 27 career touchdown passes and 35 interceptions, with a quarterback rating of 72.3.

Maccagnan hasn't guaranteed that Hackenberg will sit, watch, and learn in 2016. But it sure sounds like Maccagnan would rather not force Hackenberg to play as a rookie. For most quarterbacks, starting as a rookie is not an ideal situation, as the Jets saw with Smith in 2013. Petty also remains a developmental mystery of sorts.

"Christian Hackenberg is coming from a spread system the last two years in college," Maccagnan said. "So it's going to be a transition to a pro-style system, even though he had a little bit of exposure to that earlier in his career at Penn State [as a freshman in 2013].

"I think [Petty] has developed quite a bit. I think Bryce has made very good progress. We're quite excited about Bryce going forward. We'll probably have a better feel for where he's at when we get to training camp. Let's see how he does in the offseason, because it just takes time with these guys."

How Jets' Christian Hackenberg compares to Geno Smith, Bryce Petty out of college (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media May 3, 2016

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/01/jersey_roots_run_deep_for_jets_mike_maccagnan_and.html

With Ryan Fitzpatrick still unsigned, the Jets' quarterbacks are currently ex-starter Geno Smith, second-year pro Bryce Petty, and rookie Christian Hackenberg, whom the Jets drafted in Round 2 last weekend.

The Jets picked Smith in Round 2 in 2013 and Petty in Round 4 last year. So how does Hackenberg's scouting profile out of college compare to Smith's and Petty's?

ESPN draft analysts Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay addressed that question Monday during a conference call with reporters.

McShay believes Hackenberg has the highest upside of the trio, but also has the biggest problems with accuracy coming out of college. Kiper has said the Jets should avoid trying to start Hackenberg in 2016, because it could hurt him.

Here's more of what Kiper had to say:

"For me, they were all completely different. The Baylor offense [that Petty played in] is going to prevent you from being a factor for a while. Bryce Petty is a big, strong-armed quarterback with some athletic ability. But he needed time. Geno Smith had that stride. Not the delivery, but the length of his stride was going to create problems in the pocket. You can't have that. I thought they needed to tweak that with Geno Smith. It's not surprising that he ran into a few issues along the way.

"[Hackenberg] sets up with Bill O'Brien [at Penn State] and had a very good freshman year [in a pro-style offense]. Since that time [when O'Brien left for the Texans], he's deteriorated, because of the offensive line's inability to protect. He doesn't deal with [pass-rush] pressure well. His body language at times wasn't what you wanted to see. He didn't have big-time receivers. There were a lot of issues with that offense beyond him. But you can't excuse it all away and say, 'Well, it's because Bill O'Brien wasn't there.' The happy medium was [to] get him in the second round, try to recreate him."

And here's what McShay said:

Page 8: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2016/05-May/... · keeping four quarterbacks on the roster — even after training camp. “The simple

8 | P a g e

"Looking back, I had a second-round grade on Geno, a second-round grade on Hackenberg, and a fourth-round grade on Petty. Petty had the best leadership and football character of all these guys. It's not a negative to anybody. It's just that his was off the charts. He came from a system that didn't translate very well. Geno came from a system that did not translate perfectly, and he had a lot of adjusting to do.

"Whereas Hackenberg has played in more of a pro-style system. Geno had some mechanical issues that had to be worked out, but was a little bit more accurate than Hackenberg. It all comes down to the accuracy. I think from a mental standpoint, [Hackenberg] improved with his decision making. He's got the size that you look for. He can handle everything that you throw at him mentally. But can he get his footwork to a point where he's consistent with it, he relies on it, he believes in it, and he really fits and regains his confidence as a passer?

"Ultimately, that's it. Who knows where Petty is? I don't know what they think of him to this point. I think he has a lower ceiling than Hackenberg. Ultimately, Hackenberg probably, from the pro-style system, with his skill set, has the greatest upside of the group. But he's the furthest away in terms of accuracy, of those three quarterbacks, when it comes to leaving school at their respective times."

Do you agree with what Kiper and McShay said? Sound off down in the comments.

Jets Mailbag: Gang Green’s love affair with Christian Hackenberg, what’s next for Mo Wilkerson and draft-day steals (Manish Mehta) New York Daily News May 3, 2016

The super-sized post-draft edition of the Jets mailbag digs deep into why the Jets are in love with Christian Hackenberg, what lies ahead for Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bryce Petty and Geno Smith, the smart move for Mo Wilkerson and a couple potential draft-day steals.

What are the chances Hackenberg sees the field in 2016? - Johnny Bling @cheasman81

Don’t rule it out ... especially if Ryan Fitzpatrick is not back. Now, I still believe that Fitzpatrick ultimately will re-sign, but there’s no denying how strongly the Jets feel about Hackenberg, whose smarts played as much of a role in their decision to draft him in the second round as any other factor.

Back page of the New York Daily News for April 30, 2016.

How bright does the team think he is? Well, Hackenberg and Cal’s Jared Goff were head and shoulders above the rest of the quarterback class in terms of football I.Q. in their mind. They were 1 and 1A.

The Jets made a play to trade up to the top spot in the draft for Goff before the Titans got a king’s ransom from the Rams. When that ship sailed, Hackenberg was always going to be their guy. The Paxton Lynch “interest” was nothing more than subterfuge. The Jets had a third/fourth-round grade on Lynch, which is fascinating considering that John Elway traded up in the first round to secure the Memphis quarterback. Only time will tell whether the Broncos or Jets is right.

Mike Maccagnan, frankly, was the driving force behind the Hackenberg selection. Remember, he was the Texans’ director of college scouting in 2014 when Bill O’Brien, who coached Hackenberg during his standout freshman year at Penn State, was hired by Houston. O’Brien was effusive about Hackenberg’s potential at the time, which resonated with Maccagnan.

The brain trust spent hours getting to know Hackenberg at his private workout before the draft. They put him through intense classroom work that convinced them that this guy has an extremely high football I.Q. with a firm grasp of running a pro-style offense.

What’s going to happen with Mo Wilkerson? - Orlando @Orland_LF

Wilkerson’s wish to get traded last week didn’t materialize after the Jets couldn’t find a partner willing to dole out acceptable draft-pick compensation. The team has the leverage, but Wilkerson, who has not yet signed his $15.7 million franchise tag tender and attended voluntary workouts, has one last option: Hold out.

Wilkerson made a critical mistake last June by attending the Jets mandatory three-day minicamp ostensibly because he was a “team guy.” That error tipped his hand. At that point, the Jets knew that he would attend training camp. He predictably did.

It’s time for him to take a real stand and stay far away from the Jets facility. If he’s smart, he’ll do just that.

After the draft this past week, where does Fitzpatrick stand now coming back? - Laura @JetsGirl19

Nothing has really changed. The Jets offer on the table stands. As of last weekend, they hadn’t offered an amended (shorter) deal. The team views him as the ideal bridge quarterback. They have refused to pay him market value for starting quarterbacks. Todd Bowles recently hinted that the team’s deadline to make a decision on this ongoing saga will be the start of training camp.

It makes too much sense for the two sides not to come to an agreement. For Pete’s sakes, this man was the engine of a team that won 10 games last season. This is not a rebuilding year for the Jets. They should be expected to make a playoff push in 2016. Anything less than the postseason is a failure.

Fitzpatrick clearly gives them the best opportunity to break the franchise’s five-year playoff drought. That should matter.

The longer he remains unsigned, the greater the hostility and ill will that will be fostered in the locker room. Players are already ticked off/annoyed by the way the organization has handled this matter to this point.

Maccagnan has taken a hard-line stance, but it’s myopic to think that there are not ramifications for taking this kind of approach with your team leader.

So with drafting Hackenberg, what happens to Petty? Giving up on him? - Keyser Soze @K_Boogie_Beats

The Jets are still cautiously optimistic that Petty can develop, but they believe that Hackenberg is farther along in his understanding of NFL offenses from his experience under O’Brien as a freshman.

How do you like Brandon Shell? Being a gamecock fan I don't think he's ready for a tackle position. Maybe guard. - stevenzimmerman @zimmies31

Shell is one of those picks that we might look back on in a few years and wonder, “How the heck did the Jets get this guy in the fifth round?” ... On the surface, it looked questionable to trade away a 2017 fourth-round pick to Washington to draft Shell in the fifth, but there was at least one other team that had Shell graded as a second/third-round player. Heck, the Jets were considering Shell in the fourth round themselves before opting for North Carolina CB Juston Burris.

To borrow a Maccagnan-ism, “in a perfect world” Shell will be the Jets’ starting right tackle in 2017.

Does Fitz come back? If not, do you see us making the playoffs with Geno? He has weapons now compared to when he 1st took the job. - @_imlivinlavish

If Fitzpatrick were out of the picture, I see Geno Smith and Christian Hackenberg competing for the starting job. Smith would probably win that competition, but I wouldn’t necessarily put money on it. The Jets love Hackenberg.

Do you think Charone Peake was a good pick? - Os 156-6 @sheafarricy36

I love the pick as much as anyone could love a seventh-rounder. Low risk. High reward. He has the size (6-2 and change, 209 pounds) and speed (4.42) to be a difference maker if he can stay healthy. Peake’s pair of knee injuries (ACL early in 2013 season and meniscus tear in summer of 2014) is a concern, but this pick has enormous upside for the Jets. The other knock on Peake is his relatively small hands for a guy with long arms. He might be a little stiff given his shuttle times, but that might be a little bit of paralysis by analysis. Peake played in the shadows of some top-end receivers in DeAndre Hopkins (who Maccagnan drafted in Houston, by the way), Sammy Watkins and Martavis Bryant. He proved that he could produce when healthy last year (50 catches for 716 yards and five touchdowns).

This could be a sneaky good pick by Maccagnan & Co.

Chad Pennington announces the Jets' second-round pick during last week's NFL Draft.

Why did Maccagnan take the Penn State QB in the second round? He easily would have been there in 3rd. His own old coach passed at #50? - Alex Best @29Murdock

Washington and Dallas were sniffing around, so don’t be so sure.

Your O’Brien point is fair though. The Texans traded up two spots – and leapfrogged the Jets – to take Notre Dame offensive lineman Nick Martin with the No. 50 overall pick. O’Brien obviously felt that the Jets were eyeing Martin ... because they should have been. The Jets’ offensive line is in major need of help. Martin is first and foremost a center, but could he have played guard for a year or two before replacing Nick Mangold? The Jets didn’t think that was an option, which is odd considering that Martin started 10 games at guard in 2014.

TWO-MINUTE DRILL (Nine Quick Hitters)

Why can't they get a decent 2nd round pick? Harris may be the only one in recent memory who panned out! - Louis Pulice @louie3020

Can we give Hackenberg more than a few days before we toss him in the dumpster?!

Will both linebackers drafted, Darren Lee and Jordan Jenkins, be pretty much day 1 starters? - Isaac Miller @RealIsaacMiller

Both will be Day One contributors, whose roles will increase as they gain a better understanding of the defense and prove they can be trusted.

Do you think there is still a chance that the Jets trade with the Bucs for Glennon? - Pete Chantzis @pcc360

Never say never ... but probably no.

What do you think the odds are on Wilkerson getting traded before the season? - Matt Lynch @MattShoNuff

As the great Ricky Watters would say, “For who? For what?” ... For all practical purposes, it’s too late for this season. A deal should have been done before the draft. The Jets squandered a golden opportunity that they will ultimately regret.

Is Bilal Powell going to have more or less playing time from last year? - josephterzi @joeterz

Same ... maybe slightly more.

Two choices for kick/punt returner. Choice 1 is someone already on the team. Choice 2 is someone we may look at. - Sean Daly @seandalyislegit

Old gameshow reference alert: I’ll take what’s behind Door No. 1, Monty.

What do you think about adding a guy like James Jones, Marques Colston or Lance Moore to be a third receiver for us? - EJ Suris @ejsuris

I think those guys should be getting their AARP cards in the mail soon.

What grade do you give this Jets draft and what was your favorite pick from it? - Francis Spriggs @SpriggsyFresh

Grading the 2016 draft right now is about as productive as waxing your car in a rainstorm…. I’m intrigued by Shell and Peake.

Where is Fitzpatrick?? - @AnthonyFuquan79

Jets Won’t Rule Out Keeping Four Quarterbacks (Jim Chairusmi) Wall Street Journal May 3, 2016

http://www.wsj.com/articles/jets-unveil-todd-bowles-and-mike-maccagnan-stress-harmony-1421893115?tesla=y

The Jets drafted Penn State’s Christian Hackenberg in the second round to help address their needs at quarterback. But the pick might have created a logjam.

Hackenberg joins a roster that already includes Geno Smith and Bryce Petty, while free agent Ryan Fitzpatrick remains unsigned.

In an interview Tuesday with WFAN, general manager Mike Maccagnan didn’t rule out the possibility of keeping four quarterbacks on the roster. “We like the idea of having Fitz, in a perfect world, back here in the organization with Geno and our young two quarterbacks.”

No NFL team carried four quarterbacks on its 53-man roster for the full season in 2015, according to Stats LLC.

Maccagnan said unless Fitzpatrick is signed, Smith will be the starter when players report for workouts this month.

4 players on Jets roster bubble after the NFL draft (Connor Hughes)

USA Today Sports Media Group May 3, 2016

http://jetswire.usatoday.com/2016/05/03/4-jets-players-are-on-roster-bubble-after-the-nfl-draft/

The draft is a way for a team to add young talent to their roster. That’s known. And for a veteran team like the Jets, much needed.

But here’s the thing about the youth infusion– it means someone else is being flushed out.

The Jets, come September, will still have the same 53 available roster spots as the did last year, the year before that, the year before that, and so on and so forth. By adding several players via the draft, and even more in free agency, some of those that were on the team a season ago will be out of work in 2016.

So, which players could be on the roster bubble following the draft? Here are four:

Cornerbacks Dee Milliner, Dexter McDougle

The Jets cornerback position figured to be a tight competition before the draft, but following the selection of Juston Burris in the fourth round, the meeting room got even more crowded.

The fact of the matter is that this position, barring injury, is going to have to be trimmed a bit, as the Jets simply have more bodies than job openings. You figure Burris, Darrelle Revis, Buster Skrine and Marcus Williams are locks to make the roster. That’s four of a potential six spots.

What that means is that there is a very real chance Dee Milliner or Dexter McDougle will be let go after camp. The two will be competing with a solid crop of young (and cheap) alternatives for their roster spots all summer, and if one of those wild cards steps up, it makes sense to waive Milliner or McDougle.

Linebacker Bruce Carter

Signed this offseason as a depth player, Carter was viewed as one that would bring athleticism to a position that didn’t have much a year ago.

The issue? Following New York’s selection of Darron Lee in the first round, there may not be a home for Carter on the roster.

With Erin Henderson and David Harris locked in as starters, and Lee undoubtedly making the roster as a reserve, that leaves Carter and Taiwan Jones competing for maybe one spot. The Jets are quite high on Jones, which could leave Carter the odd man out, especially considering the fact Jones is both younger and cheaper.

Receiver Kenbrell Thompkins

Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, Devin Smith and Quincy Enunwa are locks to make the Jets 53-man roster. Depending on how things shake up at other spots, that leaves one, maybe two, roster spots to be had at wideout.

Having signed a return specialist like Jeremy Ross in free agency, drafted a promising rookie in Charone Peake, and signed undrafted rookie Jalin Marshall, there will be no shortage of players competing for those 1-2 spots.

While Thompkins will indeed be given the initial leg up on the competition, the Jets could elect to go with someone with more dual value than Thompkins, or someone that has a higher upside

Why isn’t Geno Smith on the list? Technically, until Ryan Fitzpatrick is re-signed, Smith doesn’t have to worry about his roster spot.

Now, if Fitzpatrick is brought back, well, we went into that in detail here.

If Ryan Fitzpatrick leaves Jets, 5 possible veteran replacements (Connor Hughes) USA Today Sports Media Group May 4, 2016

http://jetswire.usatoday.com/2016/05/04/if-ryan-fitzpatrick-leaves-jets-5-possible-veteran-replacements/

The common assumption, when Ryan Fitzpatrick’s name has been brought up in regards to the Jets, is that, aside from the Jets, Fitz really doesn’t have many other options out there.

The Rams, with Jared Goff, are set. The Broncos, with Paxton Lynch and Mark Sanchez, are set. The 49ers, Browns and others aren’t set, but haven’t expressed any interest.

So, why hasn’t Fitzpatrick returned yet?

Well, the thing is, the Jets don’t have many other options, either.

With Brian Hoyer having signed on to back up Jay Cutler in Chicago, the veteran QB market is bare-bones dry. The names out there are still free agents for a reason, and likely will be for quite some time.

Still, to put everything in perspective, Jets Wire has broken these into three tiers if a situation were to present itself where the Jets want to add another quarterback to the mix, and Fitzpatrick “retires,” as reportedly he’s contemplating.

Those tiers are simple– Good, Average, Bad.

Please note, “good” and “average” are relative terms based on the options that are out there. When you read over these names, you’ll see there really isn’t a “good” option.

Matt Flynn

Top Tier: “Good,” or best available options

Names: Tarvaris Jackson, Charlie Whitehurst, Matt Flynn, Jimmy Clausen

Analysis: Certainly some interesting names, no doubt. After originally being pegged and given an opportunity as the Vikings starter, Tavaris Jackson has made a solid career for himself backing up Russel Wilson in Seattle. He’s still available, and likely looking for work.

Like Jackson, Whitehurst was once also viewed as a potential starter, but never really amounted to anything. He’s been a backup the last few years. If the Jets are looking for a backup with some game experience, he could be the guy.

As for Clausen and Flynn, the two have had moderate NFL success at times, but really aren’t anything to write home about. Flynn was actually in camp with the Jets last year before being cut after the preseason.

Michael Vick

2nd Tier: Average Options

Names: Michael Vick, Josh Johnson, Josh Freeman, Ryan Lindley

Analysis: Vick is an interesting name, but there’s no chance he returns to New York and, if his play with Pittsburgh last year is any indication, his best days are behind him. Johnson was, like Flynn, in camp with the Jets before getting cut at the end of the preseason. He could be a camp body, but nothing more than that.

Freeman is on this list because the Jets expressed interest in him last preseason before he ended up signing with the Dolphins. In limited action with the Colts last year, Freeman didn’t look bad, but he’s thrown just 28 passes since 2013.

Lindley is, well, bad, but is a veteran that could be a reliable “other” voice for youngins Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg to listen to.

Johnny Manziel

3rd Tier: Bad Options

Names: Johnny Manziel, Brad Sorensen, Phillip Simms

Analysis: There’s no way the Jets bring in Manziel. It’s not happening. His name is simply on here to illustrate how weak the quarterback market is right now. Sorensen and Simms could, theoretically, be brought in if the Jets were just looking for an extra arm to throw to the scout team (IE Jake Heaps last year).
