EXCEEDINGLY RARE FIRST INCUNABLE EDITION OF ONE OF SAVONAROLA'S FIRST PRINTED

TREATISES. Goff. Incunabula. S 265. Hain 14405. Proctor 6160. BMC VI 641.

Referring to the prayer addressed by Jesus to his Father on the Mount of Olives, the day before the

Passion, Savonarola urges the masses to return to the precepts of the Gospel. He doesn't hesitate to

attack the powerful Medici, by preaching against luxury and depravity of the Church and the

powerful. Savonarola was judged and sentenced to be burnt at the stake in 1498.

Printed in beautiful roman letters, the treatise is decorated with a very beautiful woodcut on the

title-page picturing Jesus praying God the Father.

In his bibliography dedicated to the "Italian book illustrations", A.W. Polland conducts a study on

the 3 versions of this famous incunable representation of Jesus‟ prayer on the Mount of Olives: "Of

the Agony in the garden, three different woodcuts have come down to us, all of them of great beauty". This version, where, "of the angel carrying the cup, only the hands appear", is published

in the first state on October, 20th, 1492 in this first edition of the Oration treatise.

A PRECIOUS COPY OF THIS RARE INCUNABLE SERMON BY "AN UNEQUALLED ORATOR",

ILLUSTRATED WITH A LARGE WOODCUT "OF GREAT BEAUTY". No other copy has been recorded on the international public market since the beginning of the

records 40 years ago.

Only 4 copies are listed among American Libraries: Harvard CL, MMU (P)L, PML and Wart GL.

The „Small Passion‟ engraved by Dürer.

DÜRER, Albrecht. The Passion of the Christ.

N.p.. 1507-1512. $213,000

Suite of 16 copper-engraved prints (≈ 115 x 75 mm) cut at the edge of the composition, mounted in

a 4to volume [245 x 190 mm]. Red morocco, spine ribbed and decorated with blind-stamped fillets,

inner gilt border, gilt edges. Capé.

VERY RARE FIRST STATE OF THIS SUITE OF THE PASSION COPPER-ENGRAVED BETWEEN 1507

AND 1512, BY ALBRECHT DÜRER, THE GERMAN RENAISSANCE MASTER. Meder, 3 to 18. Panofsky. La vie et l'art d'A. Dürer. 218 to 223.

THIS SUITE OF THE PASSION COMPOSED OF 16 ENGRAVINGS (≈ 115 X 75 MM) WAS COPPER-

ENGRAVED BETWEEN 1507 AND 1512 BY DÜRER, ON HIS RETURN FROM VENICE. CONSIDERED AS ONE OF HIS MOST BRILLIANT SUCCESS, THIS COPPER-ENGRAVED PASSION REVEALS

THE SKILLS OF DÜRER, IN THE USE OF THE CHISEL AND THE LOW-KEY EFFECT.

Dürer also worked at the same time on the wood-engraved "Small Passion" but the recipients of the

2 suites were totally different. While the woodcuts were made for the general public, the copper-

engravings were meant for amateurs who, already in the XVIth century, collected them as precious

miniatures.

IN THIS SET, THE ENGRAVINGS ARE ELABORATED AND LABORED WITH THOROUGHNESS, AND

PRESENT A LOT OF FANCY AND REFINED DETAILS AS MUCH FOR THE CHARACTERS AND THEIR

CLOTHES AS FOR THE ARCHITECTURE.

A precious copy hand-colored at the time.

GEYLER VON KAISERBERG. Predigen Teutsch. Augsburg, Hans Otmar, 1508. $28,000

stamped calf over wooden boards, a few traces of wear on the spine. Contemporary binding.

FIRST EDITION OF THE SERMONS OF STRASBOURG BY GEYLER VON KAISERBERG,

ILLUSTRATED IN FIRST STATE BY HANS BURGKMAIR. VD 16, G 790 ; Burgkmair-Ausst. Augsb. 1963, Nrn. 30-32 u. Abb. 35/36 ; Burkhard 88 ; Dacheux

36 ; Dodgson II, 61, 6 ; Goed. I, 399, 9 ; Muther 857 ; Panzer, DA 603 ; Proctor/Isaac 10671.

Jean Geyler von Kaiserberg carried out for 30 years the role

of preacher in the cathedral of Strasbourg. His bold and

sharp Sermons attracted so many people, that the chapel of

St Laurent, where he preached, became too small, and, in

1481 was erected the beautiful pulpit that can still be seen in

the cathedral.

THE EDITION IS ILLUSTRATED WITH 4 WOODCUTS IN

MEDALLION ON THE TITLE-PAGE symbolizing the 4

evangelists and with 3 FULL-PAGE WOODCUTS BY HANS

BURGKMAIR SUMPTUOUSLY HAND-COLORED AT THE TIME

that represent the first significant work of the artist.

HANS BURGKMAIR (1473-1553) WAS A PAINTER AND A

DRAWER. Student of Martin Schongauer, he left in his 17th

year, as Durer, to Italy. Until around 1510, he remained pretty faithful to the old Germanic manner, which his father

explained to him, and it was only from this date that he moderated the vigorous but still dry rwad of his technique with the harmony of the Italian school that Dürer had introduced so often in his work. Burgkmair paid particular

attention to picture scenes of everyday life. His portraits are very alive, full of vigor and vividness.

"His work as an illustrator is considerable for the works of the preacher Gailer de Kaiserberg (1445-1510)… From 1509 to 1512, he engraves 92 woodcuts for Maximilian's genealogy for whom he works almost exclusively from now on. He illustrates mythological-historical novels of the

emperor, including the 'Theuerdank' of 1527… Around 1519-1520, he produced several suites of drawings for the engraving; the one of the 'Heroes', the ones of the 'Heroines', Christians, Jews and Pagans, the ones of the 'Love Madness', where we find Samson, David, Solomon, Aristotle. In

1523, he illustrated 'The Old Testament', translated by Martin Luther." Bénézit.

PP. Eiusdem Virgilii apendix, cum Josephi Scaliegeri Commentariis & Castigationibus. Anvers, Plantin, 1575. $33,000

Folio [350 x 245 mm. Light brown morocco, presenting on both covers a large geometrical pattern

with interlaced and painted in green, bronze and burgundy ribbons, gilt medallion in the center,

framed with gilt fillets, edges gilt. Contemporary binding.

FIRST EDITION, PRINTED IN A SMALL RUN, OF THE WORK OF A UNANIMOUSLY ACKNOWLEDGED

HUMANIST. Germain Vaillant de Guélis, who was chaplain of Catherine de Medici from 1552 to 1560, then

bishop of Orleans from 1585 to 1587. Humanist and Latin poet, he receives friendship and esteem

from some of the greatest literary men of his time, including Ronsard, Desportes, Theodore de Bèze, Jean Dorat. He is friend with Scaliger, and is also close to Scévole de Sainte-Marthe.

AN INNOVATIVE EDITION, valued by its contemporaries as well as its continuators.

"… Germain Vaillant de Guélis (1517-1587), bishop of Orléans, a friend of Ronsard and Jean

Dorat... He is the first Vergil commentary which can be called a modern one". (G.N. Knauer,

"Vergil and Homer", in Aufstieg und Niedergang der römischen Welt, II-31-2).

The careful editor printed only a small run of copies, and even promised the author an enlarged

second edition that never came out.

A DE LUXE COPY, ENTIRELY HAND-RULED IN RED INK, COVERED WITH A SPLENDID BINDING

ORDERED BY THE EDITOR CHRISTOPHER PLANTIN, VERY WELL PRESERVED. We have here the kind of pattern made of interlaced ribbons, related to the most prestigious

productions of the Parisian binding workshops in the 1550's. A kind of pattern very similar to those

that illustrated the collections of the main bibliophiles of the Renaissance, particularly Thomas

Mahieu.

Page 9: NEW YORK ANTIQUARIAN BOOK FAIR - Librairie Camille Sourget · Librairie Camille Sourget 93 rue de Seine, 75006 Paris - France Phone: + 33 6 13 04 40 72 Fax: + 33 1 42 84 15 54 E-mail

"On several occasions Plantin had books bound by Parisian craftsmen, including volumes for

Cardinal Granvelle's library. The other bindings done there were undoubtedly also intended for eminent men in the Netherlands or Spain who were prepared to pay high prices. However, the greater part of the orders was placed in Antwerp itself. Plantin had a few very sumptuous bindings

done at Paris because both he and his clients appreciated the artistry and skill of the craftsmen there. But the Antwerp binders knew their trade too, and their works was recognized and esteemed beyond the confines of the city: Plantin received many orders from other towns on the Low

Countries, where - as at Tournai for example - there were no bookbinders, or from countries like Spain where the work of the local practitioners was not acceptable to connoisseurs." (Voet).

The perfection of this copy is in minute detail: the margins were washed and then the text was

entirely ruled, that is to say hand-framed with a red ink fillet. This particular processing was

realized in the Parisian workshops.

WE CAN CONCLUDE FROM THE SMALL RUN, FROM THE PAPER CHOICE, THAT CHRISTOPHER

PLANTIN HAD DEDICATED THIS EDITION, PARTICULARLY, TO A SELECTED CLIENTELE OF

ERUDITE BIBLIOPHILES. AND THE FACT THAT IT IS HAND-RULED, AND PRESERVED IN A

CONTEMPORARY VERY LUXURY BINDING, REVEALS THE COPY OF AN EMINENT CONNOISSEUR.

''There was an evident jealousy between the joint authors. Thybourel the surgeon (the engraver)

was employed by Appier, and yet Appier managed as engraver to get his name first in the first issue (of the 1620 edition), a proceeding evidently resented by his partner, and amended in the next (second issue of the 1620 edition). Ultimately, however, Appier dit Hanzelet got the upper hand,

and his name alone appears in the much finer edition of 1630 (= the present edition). Appier's influence on subsequent pyrotechnic works is immense" (Cockle).

FIRST COMPLETE EDITION OF CHAMPLAIN'S VOYAGES, "EXCEEDINGLY RARE AND SOUGHT-AFTER". (Leclerc, Bibliotheca Americana, 695).

Streit, Bibliotheca Missionum,

2493 ; Field 268; Burden 237.

« THE BEST EDITION ». (Sabin

11839).

« OF ALL THE EDITIONS OF

CHAMPLAIN, THIS IS THE MOST

COMPLETE ». (Leclerc).

« It is perhaps the most important of the old editions, as it contains a collective narrative embodying a

review of all preceding French expeditions to the New World, followed by and interwoven with

Champlain‟s own voyages to

Canada: a short account of the First (1603), which had been published in 1604; and an abridgment of the Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, and sixth (1608-1613), as they had been published in the volume dated 1613. These voyages

end on p. 210. Pages 239-308 contain the Seventh Voyage (1615-1616), while the eighth Voyage (1617) is only mentioned between pp. 211 and 214 as unimportant. The Second Part contains the Ninth Voyage and a History of Canada (1620-1631), pp. 1-310; a Treatise on Navigation, pp. 1-

54; followed by the Doctrine Chrestienne du R.P. Ledesme and l‟Oraison Dominicale par le R.P. Massé, with separate signature-marks and pagination. This was the last of Champlain‟s works”. (Church).

« THIS EDITION IS THE ONLY COMPLETE ONE OF CHAMPLAIN‟S VOYAGES […]. THE GREAT MAP IS PRINTED HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME. An imperfect fac-simile of the large map is usually substituted for the rare original […].

This work gives us the first accurate accounts we have of the Indians of the interior of the present

State of New York. It is very largely devoted to descriptions of their habits, modes of life and warfare; and of personal observations and experiences among the Algonquins and Iroquois. The most remarkable event in Indian history was caused by Champlain‟s first visit to the shores of the

lake bearing his name. In a conflict between the two named races of savages, he gave the victory to his friends the Abnaquis, by the use of his musket. The Iroquois never forgave the injury, and thousands of Frenchmen were slaughtered to avenge it.” (Field).

4to [203 x 158 mm] of 78 pages, 1 title, 413 pages, (17) ll. Some browning, small burnhole p. 101.

Bound in contemporary stiff vellum, gilt fillet on the covers, back cover with stains, flat spine

“PRECIOUS FIRST EDITION OF DESCARTES‟ MASTERPIECE.”

FOUNDING WORK written in French in order to be more intelligible and accessible, the “Discourse on Method” MARKS A CONSIDERABLE STEP IN THE ADVANCEMENT OF WESTERN THOUGHT IN

THE 17TH CENTURY.

The « Discourse on Method” IS FOLLOWED BY 3 SCIENTIFIC REPORTS “La Dioptrique”, “Geometry”

AND the "Meteors”, ABUNDANTLY ILLUSTRATED WITH WOODCUTS.

Since a few years the price of this original edition has manifestly increased and it is likely that this

trend continues.

Two copies in contemporary bindings recently came onto the market: one of them, the Macclesfield copy, in an unsophisticated "slightly rubbed” binding, medium sized (height 197 mm) was sold on

November 4, 2004 at Sotheby's for € 142,000; the other one, in contemporary vellum, was sold for

€ 250,000 at Christie's London on June 2, 2004.

First edition of „The Passions of the soul‟ by Descartes.

DESCARTES, René. Les Passions de l‟âme.

Paris, Henry Le Gras, 1649. $28,000

8vo [155 x 94 mm.], of (24) ll. including the title, 286 pages, (1) bl.l. Old handwritten annotations

in the margin of p. 46. Bound in overlapping vellum, flat spine. Contemporary binding.

FIRST EDITION OF THE LAST PHILOSOPHICAL WORK OF RENÉ DESCARTES PUBLISHED A YEAR

BEFORE HIS DEATH.

Tchemerzine. Editions originales, II, 791; Guibert, p. 150; Willems, 1083.

It is his most important work after «Discourse on Method» and the only one that directly evokes

the problems of moral life.

THE TREATY INCLUDES 3 PARTS:

-the first analyzes the relationship between body and soul.

-in the second part of the treaty, Descartes examines the passions by studying them from the inside,

giving a definition for each of them.

-the treaty, in its third part, deals with the various passions classified by kinds according to the "6 primitive passions" discussed in part 2.

Descartes' „Letters‟ in a superb contemporary vellum binding.

DESCARTES, René. Epistolae. Amsterdam, Blaeu, 1682-1683. $11,500

3 parts in 1 volume 4to [220 x 165 mm], full dutch vellum, blind-stamped fleuron in the center of

the covers, spine ribbed, sprinkled edges. Contemporary binding by the editor Blaeu. COMPLETE FIRST EDITION OF DESCARTES' LATIN LETTERS to the princess Elizabeth and to

Mersenne.

THE 3RD VOLUME CONTAINS THE SEQUEL OF DESCARTES' LATIN CORRESPONDENCE AND IS

PUBLISHED HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME.

For several years, from 1642 to the end of 1649, DESCARTES EXCHANGED A CONSTANT

CORRESPONDENCE WITH THE PRINCESS ELIZABETH, DAUGHTER OF FREDERICK V.

THIS CORRESPONDENCE IS OF A GREAT INTEREST BECAUSE, REGARDING THE QUESTIONS OF HIS

INTERLOCUTOR, DESCARTES FINDS HIMSELF BROUGHT TO TAKE UP AGAIN SOME OF HIS

PROBLEMS AND GIVE A CLEARER AND MORE COMPLETE REPORT THAN IN HIS WORKS. DESCARTES ALSO WRITES TO MERSENNE, improvising answers with an extraordinary easiness.

The first edition of „Athalie‟ by Racine.

RACINE. Athalie. Tragédie. Paris, Denys Thierry, 1691. $10,000

4to [252 x 185 mm] of (1) bl.l., (6) ll., 1 engraved frontispiece, 87 pp. Small hole in the margin of

p. 40. Bound in contemporary granite-like calf, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt fleurons,

mottled edges. Contemporary binding.

FIRST EDITION OF RACINE'S LAST GREAT TRAGEDY, OFTEN CONSIDERED AS HIS MASTERPIECE,

ILLUSTRATED WITH AN ENGRAVED FRONTISPIECE BY J. MARIETTE AFTER J.-B. CORNEILLE. Tchemerzine, V, 350 ; Graesse, Trésor de livres rares, VI, 15 ; Rahir, La Bibliothèque de

l‟amateur, 601 ; Brunet, IV, 1083 ; Le Petit, Bibliographie des éditions originales, 377-379.

Composed at the request of Louis XIV and Madam de Maintenon, Athalie was first performed by

the students of Saint-Cyr, during the months of January and February 1691.

Often considered as Racine's masterpiece, the play was strongly appreciated by the private

audience in front of which it was played. However it was played to the public only after the

author's death, on March, 3rd

, 1716, in the Théâtre-Français.

In this brilliant play Racine depicted the confrontation between good and evil and the deeply

moving and imposing drama of the queen.

« „Athalie‟ was Racine's last play and his last masterpiece » (Guibert).

This tragedy was really consecrated only in the XIXth century, when the Romantics saw in Athalie

« one of the heights of French poetry ».

The „Persian Letters‟ in a contemporary binding.

MONTESQUIEU. Lettres persanes.

Amsterdam, Pierre Brunel, 1721. $3,500

2 volumes 12mo [165 x 91 mm]. Bound in full contemporary brown calf, spines ribbed finely

decorated with gilt fleurons, red morocco lettering-pieces, red edges. Contemporary binding.

RARE EDITION UNKNOWN TO ROCHEBILIERE, PUBLISHED THE SAME YEAR AS THE ORIGINAL. It contains some remarks of the second issue, as the misprints from the first issue have been

corrected but it also includes pagination mistakes in part 2 that were not present in the first issue.

Montesquieu took great care of preserving his anonymity when this

satirical unexpected novel was printed, which immediately achieved a

tremendous success. The anonymity of the Persian Letters fooled no

one and the audacity of the novel even temporarily compromised

Montesquieu's election to the French Academy. But the success paved

his way to the Parisian salons.

EPISTOLARY, SATIRIC, PHILOSOPHIC AND ORIENTAL NOVEL, THE

"PERSIAN LETTERS " LEAD TO A CAUSTIC SATIRE OF THE AUSTERE

FRENCH SOCIETY IN THE LAST YEARS OF LOUIS XIV'S REIGN.

By placing into this society some ingenuous Persian observers,

Montesquieu thus succeeded in creating this ironic distance that allowed

him to question customs, prejudices and uncertainties and to express

himself freely, under irony's veil, about the important philosophical

questions.

A PRECIOUS COPY WITH VERY WIDE MARGINS (HEIGHT: 165 MM)

PRESERVED IN ITS CONTEMPORARY BINDING. Fine copies printed in 1721 of this text are very sought after, especially

in contemporary binding. Thus, Hayoit's copy (with the remarks of the

second issue mentioned by Rochebilière) was sold for 240 000 Francs 10 years ago (Sotheby's

auction, 28th

of June, 2001, lot 100). As for the copy of the second edition, printed after our copy,

that appeared on the market last year, it was sold for almost 20 000 € (Alde, 11th of December 2010,

lot 157: Rochebilière n°775).

POTHERIE MAKES THE AMERICAN INDIANS BE FULL-FLEDGED PARTICIPANTS OF THE HISTORY OF

FRENCH NORTH AMERICA.

Bacqueville de la Potherie's text is ONE OF THE BEST INFORMED ABOUT NEW FRANCE AND

INDIANS IN THE XVIITH CENTURY. This Histoire de l'Amérique septentrionale is, among travel

books, ONE OF THE FOUNDING TEXTS REGARDING NORTH AMERICA.

Tomes 3 and 4 are about the customs of the Iroquois.

« This work entirely relates to Canada and the Iroquois Indians; the plates comprise the earliest

views taken in Canada. It is written in the form of letters, except the second volume, which is divided into chapters.” (Sabin).

“De la Potherie‟s work is a history of the Indian nations of Canada, being entirely devoted to that subject and the relations of the French with the natives. Much of his work is written from his own

observation, and the remainder seems to have been derived from authentic sources. Most of the 27 plates are illustrative of scenes of peculiarities in Indian life”. (Field, An Essay towards an Indian Bibliography, 66, who only refers to the 1753 edition).

THE ILLUSTRATION, OF THE HIGHEST INTEREST, is composed of a frontispiece and 28 PLATES,

most of them folding, PICTURING INDIAN LIFE SCENES.

THE ONLY COPY RECORDED IN PRIVATE HANDS MAGNIFICENTLY ILLUSTRATING WITH

ORIGINAL GOUACHE, THROUGH 129 PAINTINGS, THE ROYAL FRANCE OF MADAME DE

POMPADOUR AND LOUIS XV.

This unique copy, printed on large-paper, preserved in its contemporary binding, depicts with all

the magnificence of the original colors, the customs, fashion, architecture, the parks and gardens,

conversation and stroll, the life of royal and princely homes under the reign of Madame de

Pompadour and Louis XV, without omitting hunting scenes or tragic events such as the arrival of

plague in Marseille in 1720.

The contemporary coloring completely transcends here a certainly famous and interesting book but

infinitely less exciting uncolored, as all the recorded copies are.

AN EXTRAORDINARY COPY, WITH ALL THE PLATES MAGNIFICENTLY PAINTED IN GOUACHE AT

THE TIME. AN UNEQUALLED COPY, APPARENTLY THE ONLY ONE TO EVER APPEAR IN PRIVATE HANDS.

It contains views showing Paris (22), Versailles (24), Meudon and Saint-Germain (8),

Fontainebleau (6), Vincennes and Choisy (4), Saint-Cloud (4), Sceaux (6), Chantilly (6),

Rambouillet, Chambord and Blois (4), Anet and Monceaux (5), Marseille (2)…

Rigaud worked, from 1730 to his death, on the series of Les Maisons Royales de France. It's his

most famous work, the one that made him go down in history.

The present work might be a royal command. This compilation is made of 129 engraved plates.

Rigaud is among the artists who knew the best how to reproduce these royal properties. Each

drawing offers, in the foreground, a happy and animated vision of court life at the beginning of

Louis XV's reign. These views that celebrate the magnificence of buildings, gardens, parks and

fountains of royal residences, claim to be as true and objective as possible and respect the laws of

perspective. The compositions are drawn and engraved as closely to reality as possible.

His work on royal houses lasted many years according to the captions of the engravings that

sometimes mention a date: 1730 for the Vue de la Cascade de Saint-Cloud, 1736 for the plates on

Sceaux and 1738 for the Vue de la Cour Ovale de Fontainebleau. It will remain unfinished and it's

his nephew, Jean-Baptiste Rigaud, who will finish the engravings from his drawings.

The engravings are from the first state, before the numbers.

THIS COPY, A UNIQUE TESTIMONY OF THIS BEAUTIFUL FRENCH SOCIETY AT THE HEIGHT OF ITS

A MASTERPIECE OF DEROME MADE IN 1749. "Both in the technical field as well as in the artistic creation, the

Deromes were innovators and first class craftsmen. These bindings have the advantage of being exactly dated, because they enclose royal almanacs. The earliest almanac of this kind is dated 1755, and the last one is from

1772. The trend lasted for at least seventeen years". (L. M. Michon. Les Reliures mosaïquées du XVIIIè siècle).

THIS BINDING IS INTERESTING BECAUSE THANKS TO ITS DATE OF 1749, IT ALLOWS TO BRING

FORWARD THE MAKING OF THIS KIND OF ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENT BY DEROME OF SIX YEARS.

FIRST EDITION OF THIS “CLASSIC RECORD OF NATURAL HISTORY, EXPLORATIONS AND

DISCOVERIES IN THE FAR EAST, WHICH INCLUDED EXPLORATIONS IN CEYLON, THE

PHILIPPINES, MOLUCCAS, CAPE OF GOOD HOPE”. (Mac Gill/Wood).

Cottrel 16; Hill 578; Nissen IV, B 886; Nissen SUB 473; Pritzel 8774; Stresemann 83; Mac

Gill/Wood 577.

Born in a family of merchants, Pierre Sonnerat (1748-1814) French naturalist and explorer, could

take part in 2 expeditions from 1767 to 1774 to Mauritius, Madagascar, Moluccas and the

Philippines. As a

naturalist, he wanted to

bring back his most

precious discoveries to

the Cabinet du Jardin du

Roi. He was sent to

India in 1774. During

two successive

expeditions he visited

the Coromandel and

Malabar coasts, Ceylon,

Malacca and China.

He was the first person

to give a scientific

description of the

south Chinese fruit

tree lychee. In his two accounts of

travel dedicated

respectively to China

and India, Sonnerat gives the results of his explorations regarding the customs, sciences, art,

religious practices of the countries visited, as well as all his fascinating observations about natural

history.

Volume 1 was dedicated to India and Volume 2 covered the Far East including China, Burma,

Madagascar, the Maldives, Mauritius, Ceylon, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

IN ORDER TO ILLUSTRATE HIS WORK, THE AUTHOR DREW HIMSELF 140 LARGE PLATES THAT

WERE THEN ENGRAVED BY POISSON, MILSAN AND AVRIL. Some of the plates show the customs of the countries explored, with lots of details about the

professions, festivals and costumes of the people.

55 BEAUTIFUL PLATES ARE DEDICATED TO ORNITHOLOGY, ZOOLOGY AND BOTANY. Many birds‟

species are represented here for the first time: “Indeed for 70 years Sonnerat‟s account remained the most important contribution to the ornithology of China” (Streseman).

ALL THE PLATES OF OUR COPY, PRINTED ON LARGE-PAPER, WERE ENTIRELY CONTEMPORARY

WATERCOLOURED IN VERY VIVID COLORS.

VERY PRECIOUS COPY, ENTIRELY WATERCOLOURED, PRESERVED IN ITS CONTEMPORARY

BINDING ATTRIBUTABLE TO DEROME LE JEUNE.

RARE FIRST EDITION OF THIS EXCEPTIONAL GUIDEBOOK DEDICATED TO KYOTO AND ITS

SURROUNDINGS, PUBLISHED JUST 2 YEARS BEFORE THE CITY WAS RAVAGED BY THE FIRE OF 1788.

This book, of great importance for the history of the edition of Japanese books, was an absolute

best-seller when it came out. It inaugurated the series known as "famous places of interest".

The first 6 volumes are dated An'Ei 9 (1780) but in reality they were not published until Tenmei 6

(1786). The first series, published in 1786 in 6 volumes, was so successful that the author

undertook to publish 5 additional volumes in the following year: the Shui-Miyako Meisho Zue.

The center of the Imperial city was almost entirely destroyed in a terrible fire in 1788: only the

temples and gardens, which were located on the surrounding mountains, were spared from

destruction. THE BOOK REPRESENTS THE CITY JUST BEFORE THE GREAT FIRE.

THEREFORE, THIS BOOK IS THE BEST DESCRIPTION OF THE IMPERIAL CAPITAL AS IT WAS FOR

NEARLY A THOUSAND YEARS, UNTIL 1788.

THE DESCRIPTIONS WITHIN THE BOOK BY AKISATO RITO (1776-1830) ARE A SOURCE OF

FASCINATING AND MOVING INFORMATION, OF INCOMPARABLE VALUE KNOWING THAT THE CITY

ALMOST COMPLETELY DISAPPEARED ONLY TWO YEARS AFTER THE PUBLICATION OF THE WORK.

A perfect guidebook of the city of Kyoto and its surroundings, the work of Akisato provides a

detailed description of the city, its people and customs of the region.

THE ABUNDANT ILLUSTRATION CONSISTS OF 418 WOODCUTS, INCLUDING 91 IN FULL-PAGE AND

327 ON DOUBLE-PAGE, by Takehara Shunchôsai Nobushige, the most famous illustrator of his time.

"Shunchôsai draws landscapes in a realistic way. His illustrations are not only meticulously executed

and aesthetically appealing but are also full of information." (Orientalia Willy Vande Walle.)

A PRECIOUS COPY OF THIS FIRST EDITION OF THE UTMOST RARITY, PRESERVED IN ITS

ORIGINAL WRAPPERS.

THE FEW COPIES OF THIS RARE GUIDEBOOK OF KYOTO THAT SURVIVED THE GREAT FIRE OF

1788 WHICH RAVAGED THE IMPERIAL CITY ARE OF GREAT HISTORICAL INTEREST.

FIRST EDITION OF THIS ACCOUNT STARTED BY PÉRON AND ENDED BY FREYCINET. This famous

scientific expedition led by Captain Nicolas Baudin, marks the peak of the XVIIIth century great

travels.

References: Nissen, ZB, 3120; Sabin 60999.

The expedition lasted more than 3 years, from October 19th 1800 to March 25th 1804. The goal

was the coasts of New Holland. Twenty-two of the most brilliant scientists of the time took part in

it and almost 2500 new species were collected to enrich the museum's collection.

The third volume, written by Freycinet, is about navigation and geography.

Péron went on board in Le Havre on October 19th, 1800 on the Géograhe.

"We reach, on January 13th, 1802, the south cape of the land of Diemen, of which we explore the

south part and the eastern coast for three months. Péron studies the tribes of this island today

extinct. On March 29th

, 1802, the ship crosses the Strait of Banks, and we start a first reconnaissance of Napoleon's land (land of Flinders), on the south-west coast of Australia. After

having recognized a very large island (Kangaroo island, Decrès island), and when there were only four valid men left and a single officer, the expedition reaches Port-Jackson on June 20

th, 1802….

The "Géographe", then crosses the Strait of Bass, and stops at the King Island… Then the small

archipelago of the Hunter Islands was visited... After a new call in the Decrès island, the month of January 1803 was dedicated to the inspection of the gulfs in Napoleon's land, to the discovery of

the Joséphine islands, to a review of the Nuyts land, already reported by Entrecasteaux; then, after

a stay in King George Port, in the early days of March 1803, we started again the exploration of the Leeuwin land… then, from the Witt land, the expedition returns to Timor and stays there during the month of May 1803. Intense winds prevented us from reaching New Guinea, so we sailed back to the Isle de France where we stayed five months. We stayed one more month in the Cape… The

ship finally landed in Lorient on March, 25th, 1804, bringing back in addition to a huge collection,

a hundred of living animals that had never been brought to Europe before. Péron was made responsible for publishing, jointly with Freycinet, the account of the travel and the description of the zoological collection."

Our copy of the atlas is lacking, as most of the time, the 3 folding maps numbered I, I bis and I ter.

Brazilian fishes and fishing techniques.

SPIX, J.-B. et AGASSIZ Louis. Selecta genera et species piscium quos in itinere per Brasiliam.

Munich, C. Wolf, 1829. $25,000

Folio [380 x 290 mm] of (4) ll., xvi pp., ii, 6, 138, 97 plates including 91 in color. Bound like

sometimes without the engraved portrait. Some foxing. Bound in contemporary quarter-

paperboards, title gilt-stamped on the flat spine, untrimmed. Contemporary binding.

FIRST EDITION OF THIS STUDY ON FISHES AND FISHING TECHNIQUES IN BRAZIL.

Borba de Moraes, p.829; Nissen ZBI 3951; Nissen Schone Fischbucher 121; Wood, p.580

« Jean-Baptiste de Spix was a German naturalist (1781-1826). In 1817, he took the lead of a

scientific expedition to South America and another naturalist, Martius, was assigned to assist him.

They left in April 1807, and after a three-year stay in Brazil, they came back to Europe. The materials they brought back were huge. Spix instantly started to write them but he died on May, 31

st, 1826 and gave his collaborator Martius the responsibility for publishing his papers. The

„Selecta genera et species piscium brasiliensium‟, reviewed by par L. Agassiz, forms 2 parts with

96 plates published in 1829 and 1832 ». (Biographie universelle, p. 72) The comments of this treatise are devoted to South American fishes.

« M. Agassiz published, in 1829, the first issues of his „Selecta genera et species piscium

Brasiliensium‟, a volume of text decorated with colored plates. » (Bulletin des sciences naturelles,

1831, n°40)

THE SUPERB ILLUSTRATION IS COMPOSED OF 97 PLATES INCLUDING 91 IN COLOR.

The first 7 plates, lettered A-G, show native fishing techniques and are here found colored (unlike

most of the copies, such as the Bradley Martin copy). There are indeed two states of the

engravings, one in black and one in color.

On the other hand, the number of plates mentioned in the bibliographies varies from 88 to 101.

The Athenæum: a journal of literature, science, the fine arts, music, and ... from 1859 mentions for

example 96 plates, such as Michaud in the Biographie universelle.

OF THIS SUCCESSFUL XVTH CENTURY NOVEL, THE

POPULARIZED STORY OF VIRGIL'S ADVENTURES, PRINTED IN

A VERY SMALL RUN. Brunet, II, 1167.

back of the last l. It's from a different edition that was made the lithograph reprint published in Paris, Techener in 1831, 16mo, of which, according to this bookseller, only 38 copies have been preserved, that is to say: 18 on vellum with borders ready to be colored (34 fr.); 12 on China paper with the same borders (6 fr.), and 8 on colored paper

without frame. A copy printed on vellum, with the borders painted, and bound in morocco, has

been sold for 32 fr. in Silvestre room, in 1831. 48 fr. Solar. » (Brunet) « The middle-ages had the idea to turn Virgil into a magician and to put on his account a great deal of wonders often very peculiar. This tradition had a significant impact on the old literary

tradition. Towards the end of the fifteenth century, these stories were gathered together in a booklet entitled: „Les Faictz merveilleux de Virgille‟, which obtained quickly several editions, all of them having become quite rare today: to give an idea of the eagerness to find them today, let's just

remember that in 1866, at the Yemeniz sale, a copy of the edition without date, published by J. Trepperel in Paris, was brought up to the price of 1320 fr. This opuscule was, under various forms, spread throughout Europe…. » (Polybiblion, Revue bibliographique universelle, Febr., 1868, p. 301). « Virgil the enchanter is the middle-ages Faust, and he came before Faust. THIS BOOK DESERVES

INDEED TO BE PRESERVED AS ONE OF THE MOST CURIOUS TYPES OF FANTASTIC LITERATURE. THIS

LITHOGRAPH REPRINT WAS ONLY PRINTED IN A RUN OF ABOUT TWENTY COPIES, despite what the lower line of the title may say, as most of the copies on vellum haven't made it. THERE IS NO COPY

OF ANY KIND ANYMORE IN THE SHOPS ». (April 15th, 1838, Ch. Nodier, Catal. Crozet, 2nd

part, p.

295) » (Notice of the Catalogue Yemeniz, n° 2365).

FIRST EDITION OF "THE GRANDEST COLOR PLATE BOOK ISSUED IN THE UNITED STATES UP THE

TIME OF ITS PUBLICATION" (Reese).

THE MOST IMPORTANT OF THE BOOKS DEDICATED TO AMERICAN INDIANS AND THE MOST

SPECTACULAR ILLUSTRATED WORK PUBLISHED AT THIS TIME IN AMERICA WITH COLORED

LITHOGRAPHS.

Sabin 43410. Howes M129. Bennett p. 79; BAL 6934; Field 992; Reese Stamped with a National Character: Nineteenth Century American Color Plate Books 24.

"Its long and checkered publication history spanned twelve years and involved multiple

lithographers (mainly Peter S. Duval and James T. Bowen) and publishers, but the final product is one of the most distinctive and important books in Americana. Almost all the plates are portraits of individual Native Americans, the majority painted from life by Charles Bird King (who also

reworked the less skilfull portraits of James Otto Lewis). The complicated circumstances of its production have left a bibliographical stew of issues and issue points that are yet to be satisfactorily resolved" (Reese.).

The practice of taking portraits of the principal American Indians who came to Washington had

begun as early as 1824. McKenney, Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Washington, conceived of

the plan of making a collection of biographies, enhanced by the addition of the portraits.

A biographical sketch accompanies each portrait.

THIS SUPERB WORK REPRESENTS THE MOST FAMOUS COLLECTION OF PORTRAITS OF INDIAN

CHIEFS EVER PUBLISHED.

Esslingen, J.F. Schreiber, 1838. $29,000

Oblong folio [366 x 263 mm] of 1 title, (9) text ll., (1) l. with the table of the plates, 60 numbered

plates. Bound in contemporary dark blue half-morocco, flat spine. Minor browning, slight staining

FIRST EDITION OF THIS VERY RARE SET OF ENGRAVINGS AIMING AT TEACHING THE YOUTH THE

CHANGE OF SEASONS.

Cf. Hauswedell 673 and Granier XXVI, 971 (title slightly different: "The seasons" and only 20 plates).

THE 60 MAGNIFICENT FULL-PAGE CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS FINELY ENGRAVED AND COLORED

WITH METICULOUS CARE REPRESENT THE TWELVE MONTHS OF THE YEAR WITH THE VARIOUS

ELEMENTS CHARACTERIZING THEM. Thus, January shows lumberjacks working in the snow and sleighs sliding on a frozen lake, the

picture of February shows people fertilizing the fields. In April, the plates show a farmer feeding

the poultry and a scene of apiculture in the back. In May, we can see many scenes: shepherds

watching their sheeps, a farmer who is milking his cows, butter making. The month of June shows

a joyful scene of swimming in front of a big oak tree and a walk in a rose garden. The pictures of

July and August are dedicated to the cereals harvest, whereas in September the hay is put into

sheaf. The month of October is represented by the grape harvest. And in December, the workers

thresh grain in the barn, whereas the pretty maids devote themselves to their works of spinning and

embroidery in the background. Other plates show fishes, birds, wild animals and plants.

Some plates bear the name of the artist David Englert, who is known for other illustrated works,

and they are dated between 1836 and 1838.

In its variety of scenes, the magnificent landscapes in the background and also the truthful and

detailed representation of the country life, this suite is somehow close to the book of Hours of the

duke of Berry from the 15th

century.

Each month is represented with one to 14 pages illustrated with appropriate scenes or subjects.

For the present work, reduced, reversed versions of the plates were drawn and related text added by

Alhoy and Huart. The "Robert-Macaire" was representative of all that was wrong with the society that flourished

under Louis Philipp's "gross and venal regime".

It's all Louis Philipp's middle-class France, the business world and the liberal professions that are

briskly castigated by the artist.

The text is by Messrs Maurice Alhoy and Louis Huart.

SUPERB SUITE OF 23 RAVISHING VIEWS LITHOGRAPHED BY Xavier Sandmann after drawings by

the Viennese painter Rudolf von Alt.

THE PLATES WERE FINELY HAND-COLORED AT THE TIME AND ENHANCED WITH GUM ARABIC.

Each lithograph, measuring 185 x 128 mm, is laced with a caption in Hungarian and German.

“The important view-painter Rudolf von Alt was famous, well beyond the frontiers of Austria, for his ruins landscapes, his cities views and his interiors and for his bold and contrasting colors... Alt

knew constantly how to bring something new to his work. His very clear and lightened style, without insipidness or cheesiness, evolves in his last works into an almost visionary sense of the atmospheric reality. It's in Vienna that we can find the most important collections of his watercolors. (Albertina and Historisches Museum) (Larousse).

“In 1852 or 1853, Rudolf Alt's series of twenty-four lithographs, „Festõi megtekintések Budára és Pestre‟ (Artistic Views of Buda and Pest) was published by Leopold Neumann of Vienna. Alt's original watercolours were lithographed by F. X. Sandmann, and most of them (nos 1, 2, 5, 6 and

8-24) were printed by Rauh. Number 3 was printed by J. Stoufs and number 4 by Reiffenstein and Rösch. Number 7 has no printer's mark. The images are not all contemporaneous. They were made in the years between 1844 and 1852, as evidenced by the state of certain buildings.

„Festõi megtekintések‟ differs strikingly from Alt's Buda-Pest series. The 1845 series of 32 prints is

dominated by landscapes, while the later series (1852 or 1853) of 24 mainly shows smaller parts of the city (internal cityscapes). Twenty-one of the Buda-Pest series are landscapes, the remaining 11

individual urban features, while 15 of the later series show buildings and the remaining 9 are not landscapes per se so much as wide-angle vedutas, such as the Archduke Stephen Hotel, the Rakpiac, the Chain Bridge and the Royal Palace, and the Hercules steamboat and Gellért Hill. The

titles of these prints also indicate the primacy of the relevant objects (fig. 62)…

By contrast with the more artistic, relaxed style of Buda-Pest, the pictures in the later series are,

with a few exceptions, somewhat dry. An overall evaluation gives the impression that Alt's intention was partly to present what had been left out of the earlier series and partly to present new sights

(Hentzi Memorial, Hercules steamboat), but without even an attempt at completeness, as the omission of squares so central to the cityscape proves. That the pictures were made at different times is inferred from the lack of dates on the second series, unlike the first series, which all carry

the year 1845. There is no explanation for including pictures of the same subjects, unless Alt simply wished to publish some drawings that happened to be finished.”
