Staten Island
Staten Island has been sometimes called "the forgotten borough" by inhabitants who feel neglected by the city government; Staten Island is also called "Italian Island or Staten Italy" due to the fact that Staten Island has the largest population of Italian Americans in the country.
the least populated of the five boroughs but is the third largest in area
at 59 sq mi (153 km2)
Ellis Island
New arrivals were taken by ferry to the main building at Ellis Island. Opened in 1892, the first immigrant to arrive was a 15-year-old girl from Ireland named Annie Moore to join her parents in New York City.
The first test the immigrants had to pass became known as the "six second medical exam." As the immigrants climbed the stairs to the Great Hall, doctors stood at the top and watched.
Immigrants waited here for their interviews with legal inspectors after finishing their medical exams. At best, the entire process through Ellis Island took three to five hours.
