Adelaide is eagerly looking forward to hosting the Great Wine Capitals of the World Network Annual General Meeting in 2018.

This vibrant city and its supporting 18 wine regions will welcome the delegates to South Australia. A destination that comprises the most ancient soils on earth, the oldest continuously producing vines, a diverse array of coastal, hillside, and valley sites, and which increasingly understands the special confluence of location, history, geology and culture that shapes the evolution of distinctive wine, memorable experiences and great gastronomy.

Here, new innovation rubs shoulders with old ways; seventh generation vignerons mix with new, millennial start-ups; 150 year old ancestor vines vie with new alternative varieties; and fine wine collectables share the same table with bio-dynamic, next generation funk… Add in a dynamic restaurant and bar scene that artfully blends old with new, and east with west, and you have a wildly-fermenting starter culture of its own!

The common thread that holds this exuberant story together is simple: a proud inheritance that we are determined to maintain in a sustainable way, and a natural desire to continue to challenge, explore, learn and share.

Day 1 (Saturday 3rd November) - Arrival and Registration

Day 2 (Sunday 4th November) - Adelaide City

Morning Walking Tours of Adelaide City. Delegates will be guided by South Australian identities and Premium Food and Wine Ambassadors to explore Adelaide City, including the Riverbank Promenade and Footbridge to unveil/visit the GWC Directional sign. Stroll through the city’s laneways and enjoy breakfast at your guide’s favourite Cafe. To conclude at Adelaide Oval where participants can enjoy a behind the scenes tour of Adelaide Oval.

Lunch Delegation Welcome Cocktail Reception at Adelaide Oval in Audi Stadium Room.

Afternoon Working Sessions at the Adelaide Oval

Dinner Taste of Adelaide Welcome Dinner at Tandanya Cultural Centre with chef, Simon Bryant, and a special welcome to country by Aboriginal Elders. Immerse yourself in the Indigenous history of South Australia and its influence on our place.

Day 3 (Monday 5th November) - Regional Technical Tours - Delegates to choose their preferred region.

Option 1 - Clare Valley

One of Australia’s premier wine regions, boasting wines of elegance and power. Enjoy a bike ride along the Riesling Trail, take in the views over lunch joined by some of our local icon winemakers and experience the farming history of the region with a visit to a working sheep station. No other region offers such a mix of luxury, wine, food, history, culture, relaxation, action and adventure quite like the Clare Valley. It is the quintessential Australian experience.

Day 4 (Tuesday 6th November) - Barossa

Morning Begin the morning with a bus trip to the Barossa region - arriving at Yalumba Signature Cellar for the New World. Old World. Our World. conference. To be followed by a barrel making demonstration and a contemporaneous wine tasting at the working Cooperage.

Lunch Delegate groups attending one of the following venues: Hentley Farm, St Hugo, Appellation/The Louise or Elderton Cellar Door.


Option 2 - Riverland

Experience The Murray River, lifeblood to South Australia and one of the world’s great rivers, which gives life and beauty to its ancient landscape. Known as the Riverland, Australia’s most productive wine region, you will take away lingering memories of these riverscapes, the region’s unique food and leisure experiences long after your visit.

Option 3 - Coonawarra

Take a 30 min flight to Coonawarra and experience the region’s natural beauty from sea to vines including South Australia’s only World Heritage site the Naracoorte Caves. Enjoy world class Coonawarra wines from making your own blend to walking the vines to a long lunch with the finest seafood and agriculture.

Option 4 - Langhorne Creek

Join the vignerons of Langhorne Creek on a once in a lifetime adventure to the Coorong National Park and Southern Ocean to show you what makes Langhorne Creek a temperate maritime region. Local winemakers will host an unforgettable tasting on the sands of the estuary followed by a lunch of local wild catch and foraged seafood and shellfish.

Day 5 (Wednesday 7th November) - McLaren Vale

Morning Executive Committee - Regional Tour of McLaren Vale. Introduction and welcome with coffees and local pastries at Coriole Wines, followed by Helicopter Flights over McLaren Vale then a Sustainable Winegrowing Australia Overview and Regional Grenache Masterclass at Kay Brothers.

Business Delegates - Offer of various immersion experiences throughout the day.

Working Committees - Meetings at three different venues: Primo Estate, The Cube @ d’Arenberg or Wirra Wirra.

Day 4 (Tuesday 6th November) - Barossa (Cont...)

Afternoon Working Committees - Remain at their designated venue for afternoon.

Business Delegates - Allocated one of the following streams:

• Eden Valley Odyssey: Lunch at Hutton Vale, Walk the Camino to Henschke and visit and taste at Hill of Grace vineyard, then on to Mengler Hill Sculpture Park, try Croquet on the lawn at Chateau Tanunda for afternoon tea.

• Lunch & Tasting at Harvest Kitchen/Artisans, then on to Langmeil The Freedom 1843 Shiraz vineyard visit and tasting (the oldest Shiraz vines in the world), perhaps taking in the Organ & Art Gallery if time permitted, and a visit to the Kegelbahn.

Late Afternoon

All delegates regather at Fino Courtyard, Seppeltsfield for a fortified tasting and canapés and Jam Factory Visit and a wrap-up thank you. Bus transfer straight to dinner via southern Barossa.

Lunch Executive Committee - Meet with Government/Minister Representatives over lunch at Star of Greece.

Afternoon Executive Committee - Beach cricket and local beers on Port Willunga, regional Shiraz tasting and clay pigeon shooting at McLaren Vale Distillery.

Working Committee - Return to various destinations for working sessions.

Evening International Wine Tasting at the National Wine Centre, showcasing the 8 Great Wine Capital Regions against Adelaide | South Australia’s 18 wine region offerings.

Day 6 (Thursday 8th November) - Adelaide Hills

Morning Executive Committee Meeting in Adelaide. All other delegates on an Adelaide Hills Wine Region Immersion tour to selected Hills wineries, with an opportunity to cuddle koalas & kangaroos.

Lunch Adelaide Hills Long Table Lunch on the lawns at Mount Lofty House with locally sourced produce and premium wines.

Afternoon GWC AGM Closing Ceremony at Parliament House.

Dinner Gala Dinner and International Best of Wine Tourism Awards (BoWTA) Ceremony at the Botanic Gardens.

Nicknamed the “Festival State”, South Australia prides itself on being an art and culture hub and holds multiple creative festivals throughout the year.

Classified as the oldest surviving German settlement in Australia, the quaint town of Hahndorf is located in the Adelaide Hills, only a 20-minute drive from Adelaide’s CBD.

The outback town Coober Pedy is known for its status as the biggest opal-producing area in the world, and at least half the population lives in underground accommodation.

South Australia has Australia’s First Certified Organic Pizza Restaurant. All purchased ingredients are sustainably farmed, don’t use artificial fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides and they are Fair Trade.

South Australia is the driest state on the world’s driest continent and home to Australia’s largest salt lake. Lake Eyre is 144 kilometres long and 77 kilometres wide.

Australia’s third largest island, Kangaroo Island, is a spectacular area that is sometimes described as a “zoo without fences”. It also happens to be the only sanctuary in the world for Ligurian bees.

South Australia is also home to the world’s largest cattle station. At roughly 24,000 square kilometres, Anna Creek Station is larger even than Israel or Belgium.

In 1872, Adelaide was the first Australian capital city to be connected by telegraph with London.
