Seminar 1 11:15am–12pm

PAUL HARCOURT • SEMINAR ROOM 1

The story from Creation to Christ – learning the Old Testament

“The Old is in the New revealed; the New is in the Old concealed” (St Augustine). For many Christians, the Old Testament is a closed book. It was written over centuries, by different human hands to very different contexts. Most people unsurprisingly therefore find much of it hard to read, the message hard to understand, and following the plot harder still! But without an appreciation of the story of salvation that leads us to Jesus, we miss so much. This seminar aims to fill in the blanks and help people connect their personal story into the big story of God’s people.

MARK ALDRIDGE • SEMINAR ROOM 2

Learning to hear God’s voice(Please note: this seminar continues at 12:15pm)

Jesus is our model both for life and ministry and he was quite clear that everything he did was based on the leading of the Father. In these seminars Mark explores how we can enter into our birthright of hearing God’s voice. How do we know that it is God speaking? What is the language of the Holy Spirit and how can we test and weigh what we think we are hearing? These seminars are full of Mark’s own experiences and practical teaching and exercises for growing in the revelatory gifts of the Spirit.

SARAH GRAY (LOVE MATTERS) • SEMINAR ROOM 3

Let’s talk about…

…Sex. As Christians we are often reminded that we are ‘in the world but not of the world’. But what does that mean for how we talk to our children about sex and relationships? How can we make sure that we provide them with the information and guidance that they need, but in a way that doesn’t detract from their innocence? If you are a parent / carer / youth leader and are worried about having “the chat” with a young person in your care, then this is the seminar for you. Love Matters share their experience in tackling these sometimes tricky subjects with young people, provide some practical tips and give you the opportunity to discuss any concerns with others who are in the same boat.

BECKY HARCOURT • SEMINAR ROOM 4

Dealing with disappointment

Joyce Meyer says, ‘When things don’t prosper or succeed according to our plan, the first emotion we feel is disappointment. This is normal. There is nothing wrong with feeling disappointed. But we must know what to do with that feeling, or it will move into something more serious.’ Disappointment can shake our faith in God’s power... or even in his goodness. From her own personal experience of grief and guilt, as well as being a parent of a child with special needs, Becky will offer some help and encouragement to people who’ve been through some of the harder times of life.

NICK FERRABY (CHRISTIANS IN SPORT) • SEMINAR ROOM 5

Sharing Christ in every day life

When the great commission in Matthew 28 verse 19 says “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…” how can we understand mission in the 21st century church when the church seems to be on the decrease? Where is the church going wrong, if at all? How can we each personally be accountable to this Great Commission? This seminar will break down the fear of evangelism with some simple tools and concepts to bring Christ into every day life.

PHIL LE CHEMINANT • MAIN HALL

Creating atmosphere in worship

In this interactive seminar, Phil looks at how musicians can use the tools at their disposal to create an atmosphere conducive to worship, and gives practical tips for worship leaders and musicians on the effective use of music to enhance elements of the worship service. Phil will also address the argument that the emotional nature of music can be used to elicit a response and manipulate an audience.

Seminar 2 12:15–1pm

PAUL & BECKY HARCOURT • SEMINAR ROOM 1

Making the most of our gifts and strengths

Each of us is “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14) and given special spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:7). We are all “God’s worksmanship” (Ephesians 3:20) – yet none of us are the same! Too often we find ourselves envying the gifts of others, rather than rejoicing in our own uniqueness. Or we lack confidence because

Page 9: New Wine Jersey Programme 2015

we fail to see the contribution that our own gifting, personality and strengths make. How can we complement each other, whether in marriage or in teams? God has made us all different, and learning to accept, explore and develop our own abilities is part of growing into maturity – for us and for the Church!

MARK ALDRIDGE • SEMINAR ROOM 2

Learning to hear God’s voice(Continued from seminar 1)

SARAH GRAY (LOVE MATTERS) • SEMINAR ROOM 3

Generation sext

The way that young people communicate has changed; with the ever-increasing dominance of the smart phone, the webcam and the huge influence of social media ‘sexting’ has become a very relevant issue. This workshop is for anyone who parents or works with young people. Love Matters aims to help you to understand the pressures that young people face to share explicit images of themselves, the potential consequences of doing so and most importantly give you the tools to tackle this important subject with young people.

PHIL LE CHEMINANT • MAIN HALL

Spontaneity in worship

In Ephesians 5, Paul writes “Be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs...” As musicians and worship leaders, how we can be ready to contribute in worship with spontaneous, Spirit-breathed songs? In this practical workshop, Phil will discuss the skills and tools required to play and sing spontaneously, and explores how to effectively rehearse spontaneity!
