Welcome to Walsall RFC

Good afternoon and welcome to all members and visitors to Walsall Rugby Club. I hope you enjoy today’s game and the traditional rugby hospitality in the club and at the bar! We continue this season in Midlands 2 West (North), renewing old rivalries with Longton and welcoming Burntwood and Moseley Oak to Delves Road for the first time in the league. For 2019-20 Geraint Tilllott as DoR and playing Head Coach Jon Ford continue in their roles, supported by Mark Gilbert and Rich Henwood. On the pitch Captain Roger Weston continues in his role sup-ported by new Vice-captain Tom Aston. I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing them all the best for the season. Off the pitch our sincere best wishes go to Frances Southall who has left the role of Club Steward after 5 years. Kenny Wallace has been appointed in her place, who I’m sure you will support in your capacity to enjoy a drink at the bar. We also welcome Demi Shilton who will be providing the food offering at the club. We have also made significant strides regarding the club infrastructure. The development plans have been accepted by the RFU and planning permission has been granted. The funding plan has been outlined for seeking grants and fund aid from the supporting organisations, but importantly also members. Please take the time to look at the plans and where possible can I encourage you to support the fund raising effort, either financially or if you are have ideas or are prepared to spend time helping as part of the house, development or other committees please get involved.

Finally, to all those who volunteer and help at the club in any capacity, thank you. Without your time and commitment the club would not be able to function and provide the excellent sporting and social base for a game that I, and I’m sure you all, enjoy and love. Here’s to a great season, a great day, a great game and win or lose, an en-

joyable drink or two with a few friends.

Cheers,

Tim

The Captain’s View

Good afternoon. Thanks for taking time to read today’s match day programme. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Leek's players and supporters on behalf of the Walsall squad. It's always exciting heading into a new season, going into the un-known and flip-flopping between optimism and pessimism! Our pre-season has been as productive as it could have been, with the squad being fitter, stronger and deeper than it has been for a very long time. Over the past couple of weeks we have played friendlies away against Veseyans and Droitwich. We proved far too strong for Veseyans, coming away with a 62-5 victory. More impressive was our performance in a 29-19 defeat to Droitwich, who are playing level 6 rugby next season. Despite missing five first-team regulars, we com-peted physically and looked dangerous throughout. It's great our young squad developing and making strides forwards. As far as aims for the season go, we know that this is still a squad in its infancy but we also know that showing progression is essential. We lost a lot of games last season by less than a score, and learning how to close those games out is essential. We also know that scrap-ping around in the bottom half of the table isn't where we should be, given the emerging talents that we have. Personally I’d love for us to finish in the top half this season, and to start to turn Delves Road back into a difficult away game for all of our opponents. I look forward to reacquainting myself with some familiar faces in the bar after the game, after a long summer away. Cheers! Roger

DEVELOPMENT

The development of our six changing rooms to RFU standards with integral showers

and toilets will be done in three phases and will entail an extension to the clubhouse

to accommodate new toilets, office, storage and entrance hall. The RFU are keen to

support this development through the provision of interest free loans so that the work

can begin as soon as possible. We have to pay back the loans and also raise more

funds ! We are going to do this by arranging fund raising events and by making indi-

vidual pledges.

The pledges will be of £2 a week for 10 years. We will need just over one hundred

pledges in place to secure the first loan, with gift aid the £96 a year is increased to

£120, the ten year pledge then becomes £1200. Please look at the board in the en-

trance hall for more information and help yourself to a leaflet.

If you have any ideas on how to raise more funds by organising events or any other

means please speak to Tim Smith, Dave Rogers or Martin McCluney.

We are looking at organising sponsored events with the Senior players and also in-

volve the Mini and Juniors—if you have any fantastic ideas, please get in touch!

World Cup matches will be oninthe club, please come and watch them with us!
