premier week 10 reviewThe race for the playoff spots is heating up with several teams in contention as we head into the business end of the season. The top three of Hamilton Marist, Melville and Otorohanga, along with Morrinsville Sports and Fraser Tech, were the Rd 10 winners.

Fraser Tech 30 – Hautapu 25 Fraser Tech produced a solid performance at Mill Street, where they were clinical on attack and tight on defence, to come away with a narrow win over APL Direct Hautapu. Tech remain in seventh spot after the win but the five points keeps them right in touch with the playoff spots, while for Hautapu it was their fifth bonus point loss of the season. The home side got off to a flying start with a brilliant team try in just the fourth minute of the match. Starting inside their own half virtually the whole team got their hands on the ball with wing Shelford Murray finishing off. Fullback Brando Va’aulu added the conversion to go with an earlier penalty for a 10-0 lead. The action continued as Hautapu made a strong reply - Number 8 Luke Jacobson breaking several tackles on his way to slamming the ball down under the posts. For the following 20 minutes Hautapu enjoyed the better field position but were unable to capitalise as the Tech defence held firm. Eventually they came away with a penalty from first five Jason Thomasen to level the scores at 10-10 after half an hour. The try scoring action ramped up again late in the half as Tech worked their way back into the Hautapu half and another good team try was this time finished on the other wing by Kanzo Nakahama. Their lead was short lived however as Hautapu scored just before the break through prop Josh Davey. With time up on the clock Hautapu managed to produce some nice backline play from a set piece for wing Toby White to score and give the visitors a somewhat surprise 20-15 lead at the break. Tech came out firing after the halftime interval and flanker Johan Van Der Poel broke free from a maul to crash over the line and level the scores once again. The momentum continued in Tech’s favour as halfback Jake Ashby made a good sniping run and Number 8 Simon Humble was on hand to take the offload and dot down under the posts. Still with half an hour remaining and the game opening up, more tries seemed likely. However the defence from both teams sharpened up considerably and errors began to creep in on attack. Hautapu had the better of the chances and went close on several occasions to getting the try that could have tied the match up. But when Va’aulu landed a late penalty for Tech that gave them a 10 point buffer and the result was sealed. There was time for one last try right on fulltime for Hautapu, and an important one it was with flanker David Morris dotting down to earn his side two bonus points. Hamilton Marist 45 – Hamilton Old Boys 33 Top of the table Lodge City Rentals Hamilton Marist continued their winning ways at Marist Park to halt The Local Hamilton Old Boys winning streak. After a slow start Marist ran in seven tries for a comprehensive win, with loose forwards Josh Tyrell and Zane Kapeli crossing for two tries each. Old Boys contributed plenty of action in the high scoring match and held an early lead before a bunch of tries either side of halftime saw Marist move away. Wing Ohonairangi Moke scored two of Old Boys’ four tries as they came away with a bonus point.

Melville 48 – United Matamata Sports 28 TDO Melville were made to work hard for large parts of their match at Collins Road against bottom of the table Reid & Harrison United Matamata Sports, eventually pulling away for a comfortable win. Melville scored eight tries in total, four in each half, with wing Luke Masirewa bagging a double. United Matamata Sports competed well throughout and were rewarded with their first competition point of the season with two late tries getting them a four try bonus point. Morrinsville Sports 48 – Te Awamutu Sports 33 A massive first half effort from Nottingham Castle Morrinsville Sports sent them on their way to an easy win over Ecolab Te Awamutu Sports at Campbell Park. The home side raced out to a 33-0 lead after half an hour and led 43-5 at the break. Te Awamutu fought back early in the second spell but Morrinsvlle were never in danger of being caught. Fullback Callum Wood stood out for Morrinsville, scoring two of his sides seven tries, while first five Josh O’Flaherty added 15 points with a try and five conversions. Otorohanga 32 – University 16 OTC Otorohanga came from behind to beat Metalco Recycylers University at Island Reserve after trailing 10-7 at the break. Prolific try scoring winger Sekove Seriki scored twice, as did fullback Te Amo Wilbore who added two conversions and a penalty for a personal haul of 17 points. A first half try to loose forward Louis Rogers and the boot of first five Jason Robertson kept University in touch but Otorohanga pulled away in the final quarter.

Hautapu first five Jason Thomasen gets sandwiched between two Fraser Tech defenders during their Round 10 match last weekend.

sideline chatterQ. What happens after the game to a player who has been yellow or red carded?A. Yellow card - after the game the referee fills in a report. That report is filed. If a player receives three yellow cards in a season he will be stood down for one week (subject to appeal).Red card - report is filed to the Citing Commissioner (CC). The CC then has the authority (based on the New Zealand Rugby

black book) to decide on an automatic two week stand down for player, or for the case to go to a judicial hearing. Again this is subject to appeal.

If you have any other club rugby questions drop Bill Heslop a line at [email protected].
