Late last year, we launched a new recognition scheme to highlight the outstanding work done by our Authorised Officers (AOs).

The scheme acknowledges that AOs do a lot more than protect revenue. They also play a critical role in maintaining customer safety and enhancing the overall customer experience.

Each month, AOs can be nominated for an action they’ve carried out that goes above and beyond their call of duty. At the end of the month, the most outstanding nomination/s are presented with a certificate acknowledging their excellent work.

Most recently, a crew of AOs were recognised for their actions

which led to the arrest of a man who had allegedly sexually assaulted another customer.

The AOs, David Van Sanden, Jade Cady, Matthew Parker and Vikrant Sharma, were working at Westall Station when they were approached by a young female who claimed she had been assaulted by a man who was standing on the platform.

The AOs immediately called police then reported the man, who was smoking on the platform, and subsequently held him until police arrived. Well done to David, Jade, Matthew and Vikrant.

If you would like to nominate an AO, simply download and complete the nomination form on The Depot which can be found under the ‘operating group’ menu.

We’re placing a renewed focus on the recruitment, retention and development of our employees with the launch of a new project, the Metro Role Profiling Project.

A key part of our Talent Acquisition and Development Strategy, the new project will help us understand the behaviours, capabilities and competencies that drive effective performance for each of our roles.

The information gathered through the project will provide us with a common approach for identifying the right talent and providing the right development opportunities to all our employees. This will aid in enhancing engagement across our business.

To kick things off, each role at Metro has been categorised into one of 15 ‘job families’ identified across the business.

Be a part of the Metro Role Profiling Project We’ll be carrying out some

‘visionary interviews’ with some of our senior managers to identify the current and future needs of the business.

Later this month, we’ll be commencing focus groups with selected individuals from across the business to help identify the behaviours that are critical for success in each Metro role. Invitations to participate in the focus groups will be distributed from next week.

In these focus groups, individuals will have the opportunity to reflect upon their current role, their team and their primary responsibilities.

The information gathered through the interviews and focus groups will be collated and developed into job profiles for each role. These job profiles will sit alongside our existing position descriptions and will form the

basis of recruiting new employees as well as developing our existing people.

Talent Acquisition and Assessment Manager, Peter Kellaway, said the Metro Role Profiling Project will help ensure that both Metro and our employees can grow and succeed.

“A better understanding of individual jobs will allow us to develop a range of initiatives relating to talent acquisition, leadership development, personal development and career plans for all Metro employees.

“The involvement of individuals that represent each part of the business is vital to the success of the project, so we encourage you to get involved,” he said.

For more information on the project, contact Peter Kellaway on ex. 52482 or Rayner Tai on 52459 or [email protected]

Metro and the City of Greater Dandenong have delivered a fantastic food event at Springvale Station. On March 5, customers heading home in the PM peak were delighted to find a range of delicious options as

they emerged from Springvale Station. The event - which is part of the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival - brought Vietnamese, Cambodian and Chinese cuisine to the heart of Springvale. The sizzling street food was a perfect fit for this growing south eastern hub, which has become well known for its cultural diversity and fondness for international cuisine.

The Rail Industry Contractor and Supplier Qualification Program is essential to ensure compliance, governance and risk management across Metro’s entire supply chain.

The management of these risks ensures the business is provided with a robust supply chain to utilise. It also improves the certainty of the business as it strives to meet its objectives.

PICS Auditing is providing the technical backbone of this initiative. Through the PICS Auditing risk management solution, we evaluate all our partners on safety, environmental, quality, legal, insurance, financial and sustainability criteria.

The program was launched in September 2014 and is currently in the final phase of delivery, which requires all contractors and suppliers to be registered and have achieved “Green Flag” status by 31 March 2015.

“Green Flag” status denotes that a contractor or supplier has

achieved the following: Registration Completed their prequalifica-

tion document (PQF) Uploaded their required man-

agement systems, insurances and other documentation

Passed an audit of their PQF, management systems, insur-ances and documentation

Are qualified to work for Metro Our SER and Procurement

divisions are currently working to ensure that all contractors and suppliers are “Green Flagged” = and we really appreciate your cooperation with this.

The next step is to consolidate the approved Metro contractor and supplier list in April 2015 to remove non-essential and non-participating contractors and suppliers.

Metro is working with the rail industry to develop this essential program and subsequently improve safety, sustainability and compliance.

Congratulations to Anita Lutz (above), winner of the Reid Cycles Road Bicycle.

Our Health and Productivity team recently ran a competition in celebration of Ride2Work4Feb.

Employees were invited to submit funny photos of themselves with a bicycle, with a new bike up for grabs for the winning entry.

We received many great entries and had a difficult time selecting the winner. Thank you to everyone who entered the competition.

We recently launched the new Innovation and Improvement program.

As part of this program, we will be sending one innovative team or individual to Hong Kong in June to represent Metro at MTR’s annual conference.

We’re calling for nominations of teams and individuals who have implemented innovations or improvements at Metro.

So far we’ve received some great entries but we’re sure there are more out there, so Lean Enterprise Manager, Kevin Ryan, has offered some advice and tips on submitting a nomination.

“Firstly, a reminder that nominations close next Friday 20 March so get in fast!

“There is a one-page nomination template that you’ll need to complete... this is the tricky part!

“Writing less is more difficult than a multipage report, however when forced to be concise and use visuals, we become better communicators,” he said. Tip 1. Put your pen down and think

“Before attempting to complete the nomination form, stop, step back, and think about what you

want your audience to understand about your innovation or improvement.

“The nomination form asks you to provide background about what the innovation or improvement sought to change. Can you concisely describe the problem that was being solved? Can you illustrate that problem using a photo, a graph or perhaps a diagram?

“Try using a whiteboard or at least a blank piece of paper to map out your nomination, ensuring you can make it obvious how the idea meets the selection criteria for the award. Tip 2. Visualise the key points

“If you haven’t found a visual element that helps tell the story of your idea, do it now. Charts, diagrams or photos are more compelling, as well as being great evidence to support your nomination. Tip 3. Put supporting words to your nomination

“With your key visuals providing punch to your nomination, now round out the nomination with key points that reinforce how your innovation or improvement addresses the selection criteria, he said.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Kevin if you have questions with your submission: [email protected] 0437 945 139

Award Criteria Selection – clear description of the problem, objective and compelling purpose Analysis – quality of analysis completed in identifying the causes of the problem Solution – best alignment to the business and engagement with employees Innovation / Creativity – solution originality and ‘newness’ to the organization Results – tangible and intangible benefits, return on investment Sustainability – the initiative is adopted in general business practice Commercial Potential – potential for external commercial application

With compliments… “Today a young woman gave me her seat on the express train to Flinders Street. It turned out that she is a driver for Metro and what a great advertisement she is for your company. She told me that she loves her job and left me with a huge smile on my face. What a delightful young woman and how lovely to talk to somebody who loves her job.”

Don’t forget that we will be celebrating Australia’s cultural diversity next Wednesday 18 March through ‘A Taste of Harmony’.

Taste of Harmony is an initiative that celebrates diversity by

sharing food and stories from different cultural backgrounds across the globe.

To join in the festivities all you need to do is get together a group of colleagues, who each bring a dish to share for lunch that represents their cultural heritage.
