KQ : How does global warming affect the earth?

LO:• To distinguish between global warming and the ozone layer• To explain the causes of global warming• To suggest some possible solutions to global warming and justify your own

opinions.

STARTER: Who’s right? Why? Write your own definition of global warming

The reason why global warming is happening is because there are holes in our ozone layer

What??? I thought global warming was because the atmosphere was getting thicker

TIF: Is there a difference between the ozone layer and atmosphere?

Page 3: New Topic: Religion - Environment and Medical Issues Today’s Lesson: Global Warming Next Lesson: Effects of pollution on the environment

Atmosphere • The sun produces infrared heat (IR) to

warm the earth• Some of this heat remains in the

earth and some is reflected back into space

• The atmosphere protects the earth from getting too much IR

• As Co2 emissions increase, the atmosphere gets thicker so the excess IR cannot escape

• This causes the earth to heat – global warming

TIF:• How can human activities increase

co2 in the atmosphere?

Ozone Layer• The earth is also surrounded by the

ozone layer• This protects the earth from ultra

violet light (UV) coming from the sun• This light has no heat• Man made products that uses CFC

gases from things like aerosols damages the ozone layer

• Over time, this created a hole which has exposed the earth to direct UV

TIF: • Where is this hole in the ozone layer?• Why is this harmful to humans?

The ozone layer is the same as the atmosphere?

Global warming is to do with Infra Red?

UV light from the sun gives us heat?

Too much CO2 can thicken our atmosphere ?

Holes in the ozone layer cause global warming?

TRUE FALSE

I don’t care about Global Warming. We can’t stop it anyway…I like the sunshine and long hot summers. I say, bring it on!!

Do you agree or disagree?

How to justify your opinion in writing:

1. Explain what your opinion is

2. Use an example to explain why you think that. This is the justification!

Step 1 – 1 point and a suitable example to justify the point: Swap BooksStep 2 – add a second point to support the same side and a suitable example to justify the point: Swap books

Causes of Global Warming Effects of Global Warming Possible Solutions

Burning of fossil fuels Changing patterns of precipitaion

Electric cars, hybrid

Greenhouse effect Diseases like malaria returning to places where it was eradicated

Use more energy efficient shower

Solar radiation Extreme weather events – floods, droughts, heatwaves, more powerful hurricanes etc

The Greenhouse Effect1) Heat and light energy reach us from the sun…

2) …a lot of this heat is reflected off the Earth’s surface…

3) …some of the heat escapes back into space…

4) …while some of it is reflected back to the Earth – this is called The Greenhouse Effect
