Blues Lead Guitar SolosBlues Lead Guitar Solos

Learn to play 18 awesome blues guitar solos.

Justin Sandercoe

AM1008183 Justin Guitar Blues Lead Cvr spiral.indd 1 29/05/2015 12:26

Key Features...

• A selection of classic rock solos, presented in TAB and standard

notation format, with accompanying

lesson notes by Justin Sandercoe.

• Songs contain tutorial notes,

amp settings and biographies

of the relevant guitarists.

Blues Lead Guitar SolosIn this book, Justin takes you step-by-step through 18 classic blues solos, recorded by the great blues guitarists, such as B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan and T-Bone Walker, as well as the great blues-rock players—Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Robben Ford and many more.

All solos are accompanied by extensive tutorials, not just explaining how to play the notes, but how to achieve the correct sound and feel of the song. More than just a TAB songbook, this book contains invaluable advice on how to develop your lead guitar playing.

The book is also supported by accompanying lessons on Justin’s website: justinguitar.com

Justinguitar.comInternet phenomenon Justin Sandercoe started his world-acclaimed online guitar courses in 2003. He has gone on to clock up over 200 million YouTube hits and was recognized by The Independent as ‘one of the most influential guitar teachers in history’. This new title is the latest in his range of best-selling guitar books.

Intro SoloThe intro solo is not particularly complicated—I hope that many of you can work it out by ear, but I have included it here for you to check your own transcription against. Just to reiterate, you’ll have to tune your guitar down (or the recording up) a semitone in order to play along.

AThis first lick is very cool. I like to think of this solo using the C# Minor Pentatonic scale, with any additional notes being an embellishment. Right off the bat, Hendrix plays a fairly uncommon blues note: the 9th (bending up to a D# against a C#m chord). Make sure those bends are perfectly in tune because if they’re flat (not bent enough) they’ll sound horrible! It’s helpful to view these licks as using both the E Major Pentatonic and C# Minor Pentatonic scales. The reason is that the scales use exactly the same notes and therefore many of the licks (but not all) can be used in both ‘environments’ (E Major or C# Minor). You can describe the first lick as using Box 2 of the Minor Pentatonic or Box 1 of the Major Pentatonic. Try to think about the relationship of each note to the key and also to the chords that are played under them—it will give you a much greater understanding of what you are playing.

BThere’s a nice shift here to C# Minor Pentatonic Box 1. Be sure to notice the different bends—listen closely to the original recording and try to copy it. Some of the bends are in place before the notes are played, so in these cases you don’t hear much of the bend. Pay attention to the recording and try to copy it as best you can. As you learn to control the sound coming out of your instrument you’ll be able to replicate sounds much more confidently.

CJust some final advice on the last bend and slide down, which is a little unusual but very cool: play the bend first and then start the slide down before you release the bend. The bend will release itself anyway, but this is the best way to get the right sound!

Artist: The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Album: Electric Ladyland (1968)

1414

Although written and first recorded by Bob Dylan, we’re looking at Jimi Hendrix’s studio recording of this song, released by the Jimi Hendrix Experience on Electric Ladyland (1968). Dylan considered Hendrix’s interpretation to be the definitive version of the song, and consequently adapted it during his own live performances.

There are a few great solos—of varying difficulty—to check out in this song. Note that you’ll have to tune down a semitone in order to play along with the recording—or do what I often do and use software to tune the recording up a semitone, saving a whole heap of tuning hassle!

Harmonic AnalysisThis song is in the key of C# Minor—although it’s more accurately in the Aeolian mode, meaning that it uses notes and chords from the scale of E Major, but its harmonic centre is C#. You’ll hear a lot of E Major Pentatonic and E Major notes, and only a few notes outside that harmonic ‘sphere’.StealingI recommend that you steal your favourite licks from any solo that you learn. This solo has quite a few Minor Pentatonic licks to add to your ‘bag’ of licks, and quite a few that incorporate the 9th degree of the scale, a Hendrix trademark. See the notes in the front of the book (‘Making The Most Of Your Lick Bag’) for how best to put these licks to work.

Getting The SoundHendrix can be a hard guitarist to sound like, primarily because he possessed some strange magic that enabled him to tame volume in ways that others cannot. Ideally, you’ll start with a Fender Stratocaster and a Marshall Stack—in between those you’ll want a wah-wah pedal for playing Solo 3 in this song. I’d recommend that you use the first amplifier setting (below) for the whole the song, however, if you’d like to replicate the clean guitar sound that appears at figure [D] in Solo 3, I’ve included that too.GUITAR: Fender Stratocaster. 1. Basic sound 2. Clean sound (heard at figure [D] in Solo 3)

Einaudi: Film Music Ludovico Einaudi’s evocative and eclectic music has lent itself exceptionally well to a wide variety of films for over two decades. Some of his more recent outstanding contributions are featured here as solo piano pieces. They include the award-winning score for the 2004 French-Italian-Swiss drama Sotto Falso Nome and various pieces for the 2006 feature film This Is England. ‘Nuvole Bianche’ was featured in the first instalment of the Insidious horror franchise in 2010, and no less than nine Einaudi pieces were used in the French box-office hit Intouchables and its two directors’ follow-up, Samba. The British film Comes A Bright Day (2012) included ‘Berlin Song’ and this time put Einaudi in the musical company of The Foo Fighters and Sir Paul McCartney. The 2015 film The Water Diviner, directed by and starring Russell Crowe, is also represented in this fantastic collection.

When playing the ride cymbal, strike the cymbal with the tip of the stick, about halfway between the bell and the outer edge. Let the stick rebound after every beat.

In most grooves the ride cymbal can be an alternative to the hi-hat. Let’s play the track we learnt on page 27 with the ride cymbal as our leading voice. The bass drum, snare drum, and crash cymbal patterns will be exactly the same as before.

The Ride Cymbal

By now you should feel comfortable playing the closed hi-hat. In this exercise we will introduce the open hi-hat sound. This sound is creating by slightly loosening the pressure of the hi-hat foot pedal. Aim to master an efficient movement and only loosen the foot pedal as much as needed to produce the open hi-hat sound.

As mentioned previously, most electronic hi-hats will only have one ‘hat’ as such; however the overall effect is still the same, as whenever thepedal is released, the open sound is achieved.Remember to always keep your foot in contact with the pedal and practise the two techniques mentioned previously on page 18.

The Open Hi-Hat

In the example below we have a two-bar hi-hat pattern. The ‘+’ shows us when the hi-hat should be closed, and the ‘o’ shows us when it should be open.

Remember that the timing of the opening and closing must accurately reflect the notation. Practise this with a metronome until it feels comfortable and ensure that your posture remains stable throughout.

Easiest Piano Course: First Hit SongsThe songs included in this title are presented in simplified arrangements, making this an ideal repertoire for pupils working through parts two to four of the Easiest Piano Course. The order of the songs is such that they get progressively more advanced, so that as pupils learn more challenging techniques and theory, it is put into practice with a familiar song.

The 15 songs included here should be well-known to most, with tunes like ‘Hold Back The River’ by James Bay, ‘I’m Not The Only One’ by Sam Smith and ‘Night Changes’ by One Direction. The catchy melodies and simple tunes allow pupils to consolidate their learning within a familiar context, since the student will know how the songs are supposed to sound.
