PRESIDENTS REPORT
Baseball NSW has again produced a strong year of performance both on the field, and off the field. Off the back of an incredible 2014, BNSW has worked hard to continue delivering services and opportunities for the membership to enjoy. Our commitment to growing baseball, promoting baseball and delivering baseball has been the cornerstone of every decision made in the last 12 months. The financial position of the organisation remains strong, stable and transparent. The Board, and the Management of BNSW, has again produced a small profit for the fiscal year, which was in line with the budget forecast. The financial security and reliability of the organisation remains an ongoing focus to ensure the balance between resource spends, and available expenditure, is maximised for the sport. I want to thank Mark Marino and Anthony Brasher for their tireless commitment to making sure BNSW remains financially viable and sustainable for the future. The Sydney Blue Sox have again produced a season of highs, and although we weren’t successful in winning the championship, the Blue Sox went about the season professionally and gave the top teams a shake up when we had our opportunities. We wish Jason Pospishil and his team all the very best for the upcoming season. I think 2015 will be the year of the first of many Blue Sox championships to come. The High Performance program has again lead the country in delivering outstanding results at the elite level. I would like to congratulate every player, coach, manager, scorer and umpire that has represented NSW this year at a national level. Of special note are those who were chosen to represent Australia on the international stage. We are lucky that the sport of baseball can provide opportunities of a lifetime, and possibly the biggest opportunity for junior baseballers, is to play in the Little League World Series. The Cronulla Little League team, coached by Darren Fullerton and David White, did an outstanding job in winning the State and National Championships to qualify for the LLWS at Williamsport, USA. Congratulations to everyone at the Cronulla Sutherland Junior Baseball Association for such a successful campaign, and doing not only BNSW, but also Baseball Australia very proud with the world watching, and cheering you guys all the way. Congratulations. Baseball NSW and the Sydney Blue Sox are again grateful for the talented staff that deliver the game to the membership. Throughout the 2015 season, there have been a number of changes in the staff at the SBS and BNSW. We congratulate Matt Sundstrom and Glenn Williams on their successful appointments to Baseball Australia. We must also thank Tim Harradine for his commitment and drive as the CEO before his resignation in late 2014. Tim’s passion for baseball in NSW was second to none, and we wish him further success at Triathlon QLD. With Tim moving on, we had to move quickly to replace the role of CEO as the season was fast approaching for BNSW and the Sydney Blue Sox. The Board was happy to announce that Mark Marino had accepted the role as CEO for Baseball in NSW. Mark immediately brought a new energy to the role as CEO and worked round the clock (literally) to make sure he and his team continued to deliver for the membership. As Mark enters his second year at the helm, we wish him every success in 2015. In June of this year, I had the absolute privilege of presenting Kerry Jackson with the Baseball NSW Volunteer of the Year Award. In my short speech on the night, I said that I would like to be presenting every volunteer with an award, as it continues to fill me with pride when you see the work and
5
dedication our volunteers put into the game. To all of the BNSW and Sydney Blue Sox volunteers, we can’t thank you enough for what you do, and please know that we are so appreciative of the time and energy you spend making baseball a great experience for so many. THANK YOU! The Board has again this year worked hard to deliver the vision and strategic direction for Baseball in NSW. This year we have focused on building our next Strategic Plan to take us from 2016 through to 2020. We have spent many additional hours of planning to develop the framework of taking baseball in NSW to the next level. We will continue to engage our stakeholders to make sure our strategic plan is fine tuned for the best outcomes possible. To Anatole Zurrer, Therese Philibossian, Anthony Brasher, Peter Worboys, Peter Shmigel, Warren Smith and Rodger Powell, thank you for your ongoing voluntary commitment to the Board of Baseball NSW. I also want to acknowledge Bob Turner’s contribution to all Board Meetings. With all the good things happening in Baseball NSW, surely it is time to sit back and enjoy some of our successes we have achieved, the Board’s position on this is very clear. We want the membership to enjoy these successes, we want the membership to see the progression we have made, and we want the membership to know the Board is continuing to work harder than ever to keep delivering a higher service to the game. Our engagement with key stakeholders including Baseball Australia, the Australian Baseball League, the State Government and commercial partners will provide further benefits in the months and years to come. More opportunities, greater visibility and a sense of belonging are all key short-term objectives we are pushing for. On behalf of the Board, I would like to congratulate everyone on a successful 2015, and we look forward to continuing the success we have enjoyed in recent years. We want everyone to engage in the optimistic culture that Baseball New South Wales can provide for our members. Ray Vercoe President – Baseball New South Wales

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER REPORT
Well this past year has definitely been eventful with some remarkable achievements throughout the season and a step up in what Baseball NSW has attempted to deliver to its members. We have had some amazing highs and I can only see continued prosperity.
Without doubt the major change has been to our organisational structure with many valued staff moving on and replaced by an influx of talented and energetic newcomers. Our beloved Narelle Fox has decided to retire with her husband Rod and I’m sure she will be happily off travelling the countryside. Glenn Williams has taken on the National High Performance Managers role with Baseball Australia which is a loss for BNSW but still a benefit with his continued involvement in our programs and High Performance development. We are currently interviewing for a replacement for Glenn and hope to have made a decision on this shortly. That said, the full time additions of Michael Ibbotson and Garry Everson have shored up our player development, our school programs and coaching accreditation opportunities. Obviously I have moved into the CEO role with Tim Harradine’s departure which has given me a real insight into seeing just how much our members do for their respective clubs, associations and players, truly inspirational. I would therefore like to take time here to thank Narelle, Tim and Glenn for their service over the years and wish them well in their future endeavours.
The continued good news is that BNSW have added a new Media & Communications Manager, Chris Doroudgar, who has been instrumental in improving communication with our membership. We have also added an Accounts Manager, Mia Giteau, who has been diligently keeping our finances in check. Pennie Jenkins has also taken over from Narelle in our Office Administration overseeing day to day duties as well as the IMG registrations. Finally, Virginia Blakemore has joined us in the role as my Executive Assistant. Most definitely a very good staff of motivated and competent people.
The BNSW Board of Management have also undertaken a review of its previous Strategic Plan and have endeavoured to revisit its priorities given the implementation of the recent Pathways Model. We have developed a 3 Year Plan with a real emphasis on member engagement. The major areas that we feel are of most significance are around the following;
1. Commercialise & Professionalise the Organisation 2. Efficient Structure & Governance 3. Communication 4. Facilities 5. Delivering the Game 6. Culture
Fortunately, BNSW has been able to report another profit for the past Financial Year. Our reportable profit for the 2014-2015 Financial year is $25,1777 which is down from last year. It needs to be mentioned that last Financial Year was only for a 10 month period where this year has been for a full 12 months. Proportionately capitation income has gone up which confirms an increase in our player numbers which is an encouraging sign. BNSW Board Member, Anthony Brasher is deserving of praise here given the amount of time and energy dedicated to guiding BNSW to getting our accounts in order while we transitioned into new accounting practices. Added to that I must also thank Mia Giteau for all of her hard work in making sure nothing slipped through the cracks.
Many of you would be well aware of the ongoing transition to IMG which has created its own set of challenges. However, BNSW has undertaken to remedy this by engaging with our membership to determine what we can do to assist with improving its functionality as well as looking at potential alternatives. We are confident that a permanent solution is close to being available to everyone.
As previously mentioned, the shift in our competition format to the Little League International model has seen a major revamp of our Pathways Model. With the advent of the State and National
7
Championships of our Little League, Junior League and Senior League age groups, BNSW has seen a greater number of a junior players participate at a higher level of competition. The Little League tournament at Blacktown International Sports Park was a magnificent tournament that showcased some outstanding talent. We then saw what a great opportunity these tournaments can provide with the Cronulla Sutherland Little League team progressing through the State and National titles to be the first team from NSW to attend the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. They represented themselves, their clubs, Association, State and Country proud in doing so and the NSW baseball community congratulate everyone involved.
Our development programs also saw a greater number of participants receive elevated levels of instruction and coaching via our “Super Series” programs, our Winter programs as well as the MLB Academy. BNSW were also fortunate to have some impressive names on hand to coach our players with the likes of Major Leaguer Glenn Williams, multiple ABL Gold Glove recipient, Mark Shipley, former ABL player Jason Dormor, Blue Sox coaching staff members such as Jason Pospishil and Nathan Wright just to name a few. All in all, we had over 300 players participate in our respective programs which is a testament to all the hard work Glenn Williams and staff put in to making sure BNSW continues to be the most competitive State in Australia.
On that note it is worth mentioning the fact that BNSW won 4 of the 5 National Championships on offer as well as having the following Australian Representatives;
10 representatives on the U12 Team that travelled to Taiwan
6 representatives on the U15 Team that travelled to Mexico
6 representatives on the Women’s U18 Team that travelled to Hong Kong
5 representatives on the Boy’s U18 Team that travelled to New Zealand
8 representatives on the U21 Team that travelled to Taiwan
We can be very proud of the effort put in by all of these talented representatives and acknowledge the parents, coaches and supporters of these fortunate players who make it all possible for them to excel.
Some events on the horizon that are worth mentioning are the upcoming World Baseball Classic Qualifier which is being held at BISP in mid February. The hosting of another major International Event in our own backyard has been a monumental achievement for BNSW given the BNSW Board of Directors have been instrumental in securing funding for the event. Much credit must go to our Director, Rodger Powell, who helped in securing this funding from Destinations NSW.
Additionally, we are hoping to attract the Doosan Bears from the Korean top flight competition, the Korean Baseball Organisation, for pre-season training. This all bodes well for NSW as a desired destination for other international baseball organisations.
In closing I must thank the BNSW Board of Directors for their continued support and commitment to our great game. They have been tireless in their efforts and I am very appreciative
I wish everyone a successful year and look forward to a bright and prosperous 2015-2016
Mark Marino CEO – Baseball NSW

SYDNEY BLUE SOX REPORT
We are proud to announce that it was the Blue Sox fifth straight year that they have made the playoffs
however falling just short in achieving the ultimate prize. There were many landmark moments this
past year with some significant highs and lows.
Standout moments were the farewell season for one of our favourite sons, Trent Oeltjen, who capped
his last year off by hitting for the cycle against the Melbourne Aces. The most tragic low was the
untimely passing of one of NSW’s great ambassadors, David Balfour. He will be sadly missed but not
forgotten.
On the playing front there was a number of the Blue Sox players who had standout US Minor League
seasons. We had Aaron Sookee and Zach Shepherd reach the championships. Some of our Blue Sox
players also had significant signings with US affiliates as seen with Alex and Lachlan Wells signing with
the Orioles and Twins respectively. Aaron also highlighted one of the major benefits of the ABL by re-
signing to professional baseball via the Arizona Diamond Backs and also participating in post season
play. Todd Van Stensel also proved that our NSW boys can cut it with the best the US have to offer by
being chosen in the Florida State League All Star team. The Blue Sox were also successful in retaining
The Hume highway cup again for second year running.
On a personal note, it was also pleasing to see so many of our junior clubs make the effort to bring
their teams along to Blue Sox games, wearing the team jerseys and running on to the field with their
idols and standing alongside them for the National Anthems. Hopefully we’ll see more of that this year.
From an administrative perspective we have seen the integration of the Sydney Blue Sox organisation
with Baseball NSW. We now have a manageable synergy between the two organisations which
optimises our ability to maximise the opportunities within NSW for our baseball community. The Blue
Sox Coaching and playing staffs have also been actively involved with the BNSW development
programs by assisting with the Super Series and holiday clinics. So there is much to applaud in how the
team have represented themselves this past year.
Now that the new season is about to start we would encourage the greater BNSW membership to get
behind our State’s only professional franchise and cheer them on for what we hope will be our maiden
Championship in the new era. As a former player I can attest to how great a motivator it can be when
you see those young faces staring out at you so eagerly. All the while knowing that what you are
fortunate enough to be doing as a player is what they also hope to be doing one day soon.
So make a date and come on down to the ballpark and help us make this season one of the best ever.
With great anticipation!
Mark Marino

NSW STATE LEAGUE REPORT
The 2014-2015 season brought some fantastic Baseball to the fans and supporters of all the Clubs involved. At each grade, from 18’s to 1st Grade, the standard of play showed the dedication and skill of the players and coaches alike. The large number of games lost to the weather was disappointing but beyond anyone’s control.
My role as Competition Manager Kerry Jackson proved challenging yet again, but we managed to get through the season without too many issues. I look forward to a more relaxed season next year.
The First Grade Premiership was taken out by the Penrith Panthers, coming from 4th spot and only qualifying for the playoffs on the last day of the season. All grades went down to the wire with several positions being decided in the last game.
The all-important CLUB Championship honours went once again to the Baulkham Hills Club.
Game Officials
The game could not go on without the continuing efforts of the Scorers and Umpires. They all share an undying passion for our game, although they might not always find themselves in agreement with the players.
The scorers are also responsible for the accumulation of the statistics and updating of the website, which all the players follow with great fervour. It should always be remembered that the scorers can only work with the information given to them.
The umpires have the unenviable job of controlling a group of enthusiastic, athletic, passionate players, who always think they are right. Players should recognise that umpires are not perfect, they don’t have built in instant replay, and they aren’t going to change their minds if you disagree with the call.
I implore ‘retired’ players to stay involved as umpires, coaches, administrators or scorers and keep the
game alive.

Congratulations to the winning teams in each Grade;

Committees and Volunteers
To everyone else, including your State League Delegates, Club committees the staff and Board of Baseball New South Wales, I sincerely thank you for your contribution throughout the year.
The future of the State League lies in the hands of the Clubs. They must continue to promote the game, and encourage the younger players of today to become the State League players of tomorrow.
To all of the stakeholders above, I thank you for your efforts this season and look forward to planning the future success of our League and Baseball in general.

NSW WOMEN’S LEAGUE REPORT
Purpose The purpose and main function of the Women’s League Standing Committee is to conduct and develop the Sydney Women’s Competition and Implement and administer junior development programs provided or devised by the Technical Committee, with a view to improving the skills of junior players and increasing player numbers. Chairpersons Report The 2014/15 NSWBL season promised to be one of the best staged and it did not fail to deliver. With the season running for almost 6 months and the Women’s and Junior Nationals being moved to January from the usual Easter period it had the potential to create challenges for our member clubs to sustain the usual high playing standards we have experienced in previous seasons. The concerns were quickly washed away once the season began and we were very fortunate to see the current talent as well as many new comers to senior baseball show their capabilities to everybody and prove that women’s baseball is on the up and up in NSW. The 1st grade competition was a very competitive right from the start with 5 teams Ryde Hawks, Blacktown Workers, Baulkham Hills, Greenway Giants and Cronulla Sharks vying for the Rhea Cornell Shield. 2nd grade competition was again successful with 8 teams Macarthur Orioles, Cronulla Sharks, Concord Comets, Hawkesbury Hawks, Kellyville Fillies, Manly Warringah, Greenway and Blacktown Workers competing for premiership honours. As has been the case in past seasons our competition attracted some interest from overseas players looking to play in one of the only structured women’s competitions in world baseball. This season we had 2 players arrive to our shores. Marti Semetelli whom is one of the leading pitchers from team USA and Stacy Piagno who is also a pitcher for team USA. They made an instant impression, and many friends while over here. They also played their part with their respective teams to augment the high playing standard that exists in our 1st grade competition. Many of the hitters that faced them during the season are all the better for their contribution on the mound and I thank them for coming. They also made significant contributions to the women’s game as a whole through helping at clinics, Blue Sox games and basically anything that was asked of them. They both made significant contributions to the NSW Blue Sox Women’s Baseball team at the national championships. The 1st Grade competition was won by the Ryde Hawks Baseball Club and the 2nd Grade competition was won by the Hawkesbury Hawkes Baseball Club. Both clubs have been very successful in women’s baseball in recent years and it will be up to the other clubs to lift their games to beat those 2 clubs. There is a large amount of young girls playing junior baseball in the Sydney metropolitan area, these kids will form the future of women’s baseball in this state. There is now a clear pathway for any player to be who they want to be in women’s baseball. Whether it is playing for your country, state or even just a club. The women’s game can accommodate players of all abilities. Kids just need to know. Baseball NSW sent 3 teams to Queensland for the 2014 Girls Friendship Series. This series has been in existence for a few years now and creates an opportunity for girls to play in an all girls team and travel away together and make new friends along the way. Jo Warner worked very hard to get this group organised and up to Queensland. It was a successful series and I watched with I’m sure many others the press conference style interviews conducted over the course of the series on YouTube. They were great and I congratulate all the organisers for staging a great event. The NSWWBL also conducted 2 development days with our competition which were aimed at showcasing our game to the younger players our area. I thank all the players who participated as
13
coaches during both clinics. In total 52 girls were reached during these 2 clinics and many of them now have forged friendships with our elite players and coaches that should last for many years to come. While I thank all of the players who have helped coach these kids I would like to formally thank Tahnee Lovering and Katie Gaynor in particular for their support of these and other initiatives over the last 12 months. Whenever I needed help with coaching clinics, programs etc. they were always willing to give up their free time to help. There is a lot to be said about these 2 and many of the other girls and it is good that they are being recognised by the little ones now and is a just reward for what they have achieved in women’s baseball and what they will achieve in the future. The kids loved these ladies and I know that they still maintain friendships with a lot of them. Social media, while some may not agree, it is here to stay and is one of the leading ways to get the message out to people about things going on in baseball of all forms. The New South Wales Women’s Baseball League Facebook page currently sits at 600 followers and along with our website will improve over time. We have appointed a social media manager and she has done a fantastic job at keeping our newsfeed current and the feedback from the community has been positive. I thank Ashleigh Connell for her hard work and support in this area of our communication and hope that her support continues into the future. Finally, to the executive of the NSWWBL, I would like to thank Stan Robson (Vice Chairman), Brian Delavere (Financial Controller) and Lyn Donald (Secretary). As a group we have functioned very well and have utilized our talents in specific areas to ensure the competition and the League ran as smoothly as possible. I would also like to thank the members of the standing committee for their support of women’s baseball and hope to see many more get involved in years to come. Yours in Baseball Steve Taylor Chairman NSWWBL

SYDNEY WINTER LEAGUE REPORT
The 2015 Season saw 8 teams participate with the season being affected badly by the weather. We scheduled 14 rounds but some clubs only played 10 games, which was disappointing. Semi-final spots were up for grabs right up until the last games and once again the standard of play was a credit to all those involved.
Grand Final Day saw Petersham sweep all before them to claim all 3 Grand Finals along with the McDougall Trophy for Club Champions.

Congratulations to Greenway on their hosting of the Final Series.
Their efforts were greatly appreciated by all concerned. Thanks also to Pirates for hosting the first week of semi-finals at Laybutt Reserve.
I would also like to thank the Umpires association for their efforts this season, with John Bailey & Rob Brown at the helm.
The commitment of all members of the committee and the club delegates is voluntary and contributes significantly to the strength of our administration and the competitiveness of the Clubs making up the ‘premier winter league’, so thank you again.
The provision of statistics and website information by Janine Hunt was invaluable. Special thanks to the club scorers who have assisted the process by using the scoring software and submitting the information quickly to enable Janine to keep everyone fully informed. The credibility of the stats is greatly enhanced by this method.

NSW SCORERS ASSOCIATION REPORT
This year our scorers have had an exceptional year with scoring. Our association is thriving and we
have welcomed many new scorers to our ranks.
We were involved with the following major tournaments:
1. Blue Sox
2. Nationals for Juniors U16’s and U18’s
3. U15 Girls Nationals
4. Women’s Nationals
5. U25’s Competition
6. Little League
7. State League
8. Gala days for Juniors
9. School Boys Competition
We have accredited 11 scorers adding 4 new level 1 to our ranks. It would not be possible to accredit
these scorers without the dedication of Sue McCullough and her wonderful teachers. All accreditation
is governed by our body known as CABS (Council of Australian Baseball Scorers).
We are also teaching scoring to beginner scorers in the different association to help the standard to
improve at park ball level. Each association has elect a “Scoring Coordinator” who are teaching the
basics from Tee-Ball to Live Ball and funnelling scorers to our accreditations clinics. This has resulted
in many scorers achieving their accreditation.
Some of our senior scorers have been selected to participate in Nationals in Sydney for U16’s and U18’s
and to travel to the ACT for the U15’s girls and Women’s competition. Others have travelled to Qld for
the U25’s. All reports from these Nationals have had favourably report on the standard of NSW Scoring
and all our scorers seems to have had a wonderful time and made friends and learnt different tasked
to make their scoring more enjoyable.
Finally, I would like to thank NSW Baseball, NSW Umpires and the different association for
acknowledging that scorers do have a place in Baseball in Australia.
