Dear Parents, Welcome to Jefferson Elementary School! My name is Bill Klein and I am the principal at Jefferson. This is my ninth year at the school and my sixteenth year in the Sheboygan Area School District. I graduated from UW-Platteville with a minor in math, earned a master’s degree in counselor education at UW-Madison and a degree in educational administration at Edgewood College. I also completed my doctoral degree in 2011. My teaching background has included diversified experiences ranging from a high school counselor to an elementary teacher. I have also been employed as a Talented and Gifted/At-Risk Coordinator. Prior to this administrative position, I was a high school administrator, counselor and classroom teacher for twenty years. I have also coached numerous sports and directed several extra-curricular activities. We were very fortunate to have the students involved in numerous activities during the 2012-2013 school year and we hope to continue these activities this year. In order for us to continue these activities we will need the support of every parent. Every parent is asked to join a school committee or group for the new school year. The committees include: PTO, SITE TEAM, FAMILY FUN NIGHT ACTIVITES, TITLE 1 and SAGE PROGRAMS. My major goal for the school year is to develop positive educational experiences for the students, parents and teachers of this district. If I can be of any assistance please contact me at school. If you have the time please feel free to introduce yourself and let me know your goals for the new school year. I am looking forward to working with the parents and students of this district. I hope the 2013-2014 school year provides the best educational opportunities for you and your child. Sincerely, Bill Klein, EdD Principal N E W S L E T T E R S e p t e m b e r 2 0 1 3

The Title I Program will continue to emphasize extra help in reading, writing and math. Both programs have been doing much to help more of our students meet high levels of proficiency in reading, language arts and math.

Using funds from both our Title I and SAGE Programs, we hope to again offer academic help after school. Our homework help room has provided assistance to those students who might benefit from such help with their assignments.

Both SAGE and Title I programs have expectations for parents and guardians too. Parents again need to make sure that their children are at school every day unless they are sick. It also means that parents will become more involved in their child's learning by working closely with their child's teacher.

It is our hope that through both the SAGE and Title I programs, all children at Jefferson will be able to become academically successful this year. Please make a pledge to work with your child's teachers. Together, we can make a very positive difference in the lives of all Jefferson children. We are presently looking for three to six parents to become members of the Title 1 Parent Advisory Committee. If you are interested in becoming a member of this fantastic committee please contact me at 459-3621.

Students who walk to school will gather on the playground each morning. Parents who drive their children should drop them off on Mehrtens Avenue. Please do not park behind another automobile. Breakfast will be served at 7:45 a.m. Students who have breakfast or read before school will go to the cafeteria. After 8:05 a.m. we will stop serving breakfast. We will also offer a morning daycare service from 7:15 until 8:15. The students will check in the cafeteria and Mrs. Shaske will be supervising this program. Parents must sign a permission slip by September 1st if they want their child to participate in the program. Except on bad weather days, the cafeteria will be the only place in the building where students will be allowed. Students may go to the office to drop off lunch money or get assistance. All other students will be supervised on the playground beginning at 8:00 a.m. The lineup bell will ring at 8:15 a.m. Students are to be in their classrooms by 8:20 a.m. The only entrance into the building from 8:20-3:00 will be the front office on Heller Avenue. Please contact the school office at 459-3620 if you have any questions concerning this procedure.

Dear Parents, The Jefferson Elementary School implemented the “Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Program” school wide during the 2009-2010 school year. Schools are successful when they help children grow academically, socially, and emotionally. It is the goal of the Jefferson Elementary School to continue to create this environment. The Jefferson Elementary School received Wisconsin’s “School Merit” and School Recognition Award in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. One of our goals for the 2013-2014 school year is to encourage positive behaviors and interactions, while discouraging problem behaviors. This social culture will lead to a safe environment where students achieve academically and build positive relationships with each other and with adults. The foundation of the approach emphasizes teaching students the behaviors we expect to see, reminding them to use those behaviors, acknowledging them when they do, and correcting them when they do not. The PBIS system has four components: a matrix of behavior expectations, lesson plans used to teach students the behavior expectations, t iger paws (an acknowledgement/reinforcement system) and discipline referral forms. During the Open House on August 30, 2011, parents will receive a letter describing the PBIS program. I hope you can join us that evening, so any questions concerning the PBIS program can be answered. However, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact the school office at 459-3620. We are looking forward to a fantastic school year. Go Jefferson Jaguars, Mr. Klein (principal)
