The newsletter of the Lead Sheet Association Industry Leaders Providing Technical and Training Support Issue 22 - Summer 2016 New Rolled Lead Sheet Manual – cover competition winner The Leadworker Register – new short film highlights benefits to members and users Congratulations to Iain Buckingham and Alex Bell, whose leadwork on Kirkintilloch Town Hall in East Dumbartonshire is now featured on the cover of the 2016 edition of the Manual. The work is part of a restoration project to crate a new centre for heritage, arts, culture and community use. Nova Contracts were responsible for the work and the architects and photo credit: John Gilbert Architects. The 2016 edition contains many improved drawings, a better layout and clearer tables to ensure all users get the best out of Rolled Lead Sheet. In particular, we have improved the section on ventilation, an area in which our technical team deal with many enquiries. We have created a better step-by-step approach to ensuring you get the ventilation correct in a range of circumstances – from flat and pitched roofs to dormers. The new Manual is available online as an e-Book and also as a printed copy. To place your order visit www.leadsheet.co.uk/manuals where you can either pay online or download an order form. The Leadworker Register has been created as a central point for people to find appropriately trained Leadworkers. To explain the benefits clearly, we have made a short film about it where you can hear from leadworkers who are on the Register, as well as from an architect who finds it particularly useful. You can watch the new film here To find out more about The Leadworker Register and how to join click here www.traininginmetalroofing.co.uk/leadworker-register.html To find an appropriately qualified leadworker for your job you can find Registered leadworkers here: www.traininginmetalroofing. co.uk/registered-leadworkers.html

The Leadworker Register – new short film highlights benefits to members and users

Congratulations to Iain Buckingham and Alex Bell, whose leadwork on Kirkintilloch Town Hall in East Dumbartonshire is now featured on the cover of the 2016 edition of the Manual.

Young Leadworker 2016 winnerIt is five years since we started the Young Leadworker of the Year Competition at the Lead Sheet Association and we are pleased that it has gone from strength to strength. We saw our highest number of entrants this year – but it isn’t just about numbers, it is also about the quality of people that entered and the standard was incredibly high.

What started out as a small idea a few years ago, has allowed us to showcase young talent in the lead industry as well as demonstrating the importance of qualification standards across the construction industry.

This year the competition was won by Tim Fuge, a self-employed leadworker from Liskeard in Cornwall. Tim spent two days at the LSA’s bespoke training centre in East Peckham, Kent, being tested and assessed with other finalists. Everyone had to demonstrate their skills and competence in a range of tasks and techniques that every good leadworker should have.

Tim has lots of experience in leadwork but no formal qualifications and is currently just in the process of completing his On Site Training and Assessment Programme (OSAT) with the LSA. Undertaking an OSAT is a great way to get your experience

recognised if you don’t have formal qualifications as the LSA helps a number of leadworkers every year progress with their careers in this way by assessing their work on-site.

After winning the competition Tim has also been featured on his regional television news in Cornwall and it has helped his business go from strength to strength, with new enquiries for his company Tim Fuge Leadworks coming about as a result. Tim also has two people working with him on projects and as Tim will be qualified when he completes his OSAT, to help improve their skills he is hoping to use part of the bursary he wins as part of the competition to send them for training at the LSA in the near future.

Huge congratulations to Tim from everyone at the LSA and we hope his business goes from strength to strength.

There were also two highly commended runners up from the very strong field. They were George Ashbrook from Ashbrook Roofing & Supplies Ltd in Derbyshire, and Matt Timby from Timby Traditional Roofing in Lincolnshire. It was a tough decision to make from a very strong field but here at the Lead Sheet Association we see a bright future for the industry with such a great range of talent shining through in this competition.

Tim Fuge collecting his Award from the BBC’s Steph McGovern at the UK Roofing Awards in May. Alongside are runners up George Ashbrook and Matt Timby, with the LSA’s Executive Manager Richard Diment.
