  • Light And LatinJust as no two music lovers will probably everagree on the precise boundaries that define LightMusic, the aficionados of Latin American willalso happily argue about its origins. There seemslittle doubt that most will accept that the vastcontinent of the Americas, from Mexicosouthwards, qualifies as being generally regardedas 'Latin America', so the rhythms and styles ofmore than twenty countries have contributed to itsemergence - particularly from the 1930s onwards- as an enjoyable part of the popular music scene.Add to this the influence of music makers fromthe United States and Europe, and the result is amix that may sometimes have corrupted the roots, but has succeeded in making what we all regard as'Latin American Music' universally popular. It istherefore hardly surprising that many lightorchestras have included it in their repertoire, notably Percy Faith, Werner Mller, CarmenDragon, Stanley Black and Andre Kostelanetz, among many others.

The Composer Conducts - Volume 3Composers are often envied by those who do notpossess the necessary talent to be able to producea musical work that others will enjoy. But a touchof genius can sometimes generate frustration. Fewwriters are completely satisfied with the way inwhich their works are performed by orchestrasover which they have little or no control, so it is abonus for both composer and listener when musicis conducted by the original creator. Of coursethere are instances where arrangers andconductors can occasionally reveal hidden beautythat even the composer did not fully appreciate, but that is another story. Guild's first twocollections marrying the talents of composer andconductor (GLCD5177 & 5178) were wellreceived, and it is hoped that this third CD willmeet with similar approval. Among the topcomposers conducting their own works are LeroyAnderson, David Rose, Ron Goodwin, RobertFarnon, Eric Coates and Sidney Torch.
