In South Pigalle, sex shops and other hostess bars are continuing to be replaced by trendy bars and clubs. After Carmen, Chez Moune, Sans Souci, Lautrec, Mansart and Bus Palladium, where many customers spill out onto the pavements, several new places have opened since the beginning of the year. First Le Kremlin, a bar taken over by Rock’n’Roll Circus just opposite and which evokes the Russia of 1917 (portraits of Lenin and Stalin on the walls, triumphant stars and sickles, vintage furniture, family photos, etc.); then Le Glass, cocktail bar and gourmet hotdogs, and disco ball atmosphere and dancing on the tables; L’Embuscade, a former Cap Verde rum distillery now a trendy spot created by La Clique (Le Baron, La Fidélité, Chez Moune, Le Lautrec, etc.), where you can drink rum in a warm and groovy atmosphere with mini dance floor; the Pigalle Country Club, a bar transformed into a rock n' roll bar with red walls and rock DJ sets; finally, Le Rouge, a club that evokes the world of the roaring twenties and censored evenings. But the biggest new event is without doubt the Cité de la Mode et du design, inaugurated last summer and which boasts a new generation space, the Wanderlust. Created by the Savoir Faire group, recognized for its experience in producing artists and for its two Parisian clubs (Social Club and Silencio), this venue comprises a terrace by the Seine, an indoor and outdoor restaurant, an open-air film screening space, a club, and a pavilion housing an outdoor bar. The space also includes Nüba, a club on the rooftops created by Clique, a tea room by Pain O Chokolat (also behind Pompon), and Moon Roof, a huge heated terrace where you can smoke a hookah while admiring the panoramic view. This trend for all-inclusive venues, where you can drink, eat and dance, is enjoying increasing success, with new venues like the much talked about Ballroom du Beef Club 2013-2014

NEW PLACES AND TRENDS

Paris is an innovative ever surprising city. Venues open, trends move. A look at what’s new on the busy Paris scene this year.

New places are forever arriving on the scene in Paris ... It’s quite a challenge keeping up with all the venues that are appearing, reopening, being refurbished or unveiling a new concept. (envisioned by the Experimental), a club cum cocktail bar on the lower ground floor of a meat restaurant, Le Glass. Here, there is as much emphasis on the cocktail menu as on gourmet hotdogs, in the same way that its big sister in the Haut Marais, La Candelaria, mixes tacos and cocktails. Then there is L’Embuscade, which serves delicious African snacks, and La Belle Epoque, a recent trendy bar-restaurant-club towards the Champs-Elysées. Another big trend in Parisian circles: cocktail bars for everyone. The art of ‘mixology’ has for a long time been de rigueur in the bars of upscale hotels and has now become fashionable at specialist bars in Paris, in the style of New York and London bars. Discrete without being exclusive, their atmosphere is as chic as their bartenders, a ‘secretive’ spirit recalling the Prohibition years, and, often, an additional concept. At Sherry Butt, the barman assesses the state of mind and even the palate of their customer before making them a bespoke cocktail, according to their mood. At the Calbar, as its name indicates, the waiters are dressed in boxer shorts, whereas at La Candelaria or the Dandy, they are completely hidden ... the first behind the concealed door of a tacos snack bar and the second in the library. As for The Art Room, it offers such artistic experiences as the playing of recordings of readings of works by writers, philosophers and psychoanalysts, and the Titty Twister has a games room. Like the cocktail bars, many of the newly-opened establishments have a retro edge. There is a fashion for transforming things to give them a nostalgic element (Embuscade, a former rum distillery, Le Carmen, the former mansion house of Bizet, the Pompon, a synagogue, the Klay, a printing works, etc.), and for an intimate retro boudoir style at many establishments that have called on decorator Laura Gonzales for their interior decoration (Régine, Bus Palladium, Le Schmuck, La Belle Epoque, etc.) or vintage spirit

> Paris Night Life Created in 2009, parisnightlife.fr is the official nightlife guide offered by the Paris City Council: a website entirely dedicated to nightlife in Paris, in English and in French. Bars, restaurants, night clubs, theatres … all these places are listed with geolocation, comments and practical information like the dress code and programmed events. The calendar tab gives access to all Parisian nightlife events on a given date. Finally, the website and Facebook page offer invitations for certain events and information on all the new venues. www.parisnightlife.fr

> Night Yourself! (Les Nuits capitales)

Every year since 2010, (with the exception of 2012) Paris has staged a festival for live music and clubbing. Formerly known as ‘Nuits capitales’ and now renamed ‘Night yourself!’ for the 2013 edition, the event takes place from 20 to 24 March in and around Paris. This festive week is the opportunity to discover the extent of the vibrant Parisian night scene with its lively districts, unusual venues, etc. A pass available to download from the website gives holders advantages at all the participating partner venues: music venues, as well as hotels, restaurants, tours, etc. The event also brings together players in the night scene sector to propose a joint reflexion on the industry at a national and European level. On the programme for the 2013 edition: themed sound itineraries organized by type of music, a concert, an artistic event at an unusual venue, restaurant recommendation, then a bar, and finally a nightspot; and other events (aperos, brunches, concerts, workshops for children, etc.) at central venues. www.nuitscapitales.com https://fr-fr.facebook.com/nuitscapitales/app_2373072738

> Trendy bars Paris is full of very ‘in’ bars, whether they be simple bar-tobacconists’ that have become big hits thanks to the expertise of the Moussé brothers, like Chez Jeanette, or places that were born to be trendy, like the Costes venues (Café Georges, Etienne Marcel, etc.). The Right Bank towards Pigalle, the Faubourg Saint-Denis, the Haut-Marais, Oberkampf and the banks of the Ourcq and Saint-Martin attracts a cool crowd, whilst arty types hang out on the Left Bank, and jetsetters head to the Champs-Elysées. > Bars and retro clubs The retro movement is in vogue in Paris and takes many forms. Ballroom dancing, dancing to a live orchestra (swing at the Moulin Rouge’s Machine or at the Cabaret Sauvage, ‘villagey’ at the Centquatre or at the Bellevilloise, Surpat’ evenings, etc.), an increase in burlesque evenings, and in the number of tiny bars and clubs in the style of those from the American 1920s prohibition years, a craze for clubs in the faubourgs like La Java or the Memphis, a trend for new bars like ‘comme chez mamie’ with yellowing posters and pans (Le Béguin, Marlusse et Lapin, etc.). In short, the watchword is ‘nostalgia’!

Hotel bars are becoming more and more the places to be and offer a whole range of scenes and ambience: trendy like Murano or Pershing Hall, classic like the Duke’s Bar at the hotel Westminster, or even completely new like the bar at the Hôtel O, created by the famous designer Ora-ïto, or the terrace bar of the hotel Champs-Elysées Mac Mahon. With panoramic views, piano bar, concerts and even clubbing, upscale establishments go to great lengths to attract another type of clientele. Cocktail bars are undoubtedly the hottest trend on the Paris nightlife scene. New York-inspired for the Experimental group band (Le Prescription, the Curio Parlor, and in particular the new Ballroom, a bar under the ‘beef club’); frosty at the Ice Bar of the Hôtel Kube, where the surprise is walls of ice and a temperature of – 10°C; luxury at

> Champagne bars Champagne bars are becoming more and more numerous in Paris. With the boudoir atmosphere of the little Flûte Bar, the younger brother of its New York namesake, the alcove in the shape of a rose petal dedicated to the Veuve Cliquot brand at the Hôtel Sezz, or the ultra chic bar at the Dokhan’s Hotel, champagne fans have lots to choose from. Those who love unforgettable moments can even treat themselves to a glass of champagne above the rooftops of Paris, at the Eiffel Tower’s champagne bar! A special festive touch that will add some extra fizz to the panoramic view and wonderful memories of Paris.

WHERE TO DANCE IN PARIS Whether it is for the nostalgia of the musette in Montmartre or evenings at trendy spots in the capital, there is always somewhere for a last dance in Paris.

> VIP evenings Although admission is highly selective at these places, the Baron, the envy of London and New York, and the legendary Régine’s Club, revamped by interior decorator Laura Gonzalez in 2011 (who has also just re-decorated the Belle Epoque), are some of the places that have given Paris nightlife its great reputation. For those who like sequins and stars and want to play at being a VIP for an evening.

> Bars for dancing Some of the capital’s bars undergo a transformation at a certain time of night, when a dance floor is gaily improvised. Tables and chairs are pushed back and people begin to dance with the arrival of the DJ, usually during the second part of the evening.

While alternative bands often play at mainstream Paris venues like the Point Éphémère, the Flèche d’Or and the Nouveau Casino, some places, like the Boule Noire, are known for their particular alternative rock identity. The Voûtes in the 13th arrondissement is practically the headquarters of experimental rock, and hosts the well-known Sonic Protest festival. At La Loge and Les Combustibles, two smaller venues, the programming is equally cutting-edge. Finally, the most demanding of alternative music fans have only good things to say about the Villette Sonique festival, held end-May each year at Parc de la Villette.

> Cabarets and revues Cabarets and music-hall shows and revues with dance, song, humour, magic and colourful costumes are quintessentially Parisian. The legendary French cancan continues to liven up Parisian nights in the city’s internationally-renowned cabarets. But that is not all; cabarets and music halls also stage other types of shows: transformist shows and performances by different types of artistes (magicians, chansonniers, comedians, etc.), also on the programme at many smaller venues in the capital. Looking for an evening out with a difference, something surprising? Like to try something new? Spotlight on the most original trends of the moment.

> Atypical partying

Night owls are partying in more and more unusual venues! During the ‘On Ice’ evenings at the Espace Pailleron, party people skate to the rhythm of edgy DJ sets. In the same vein, the Espace Pailleron and Aquaboulevard organize party evenings at their swimming pools. A great combination of sport and clubbing. In summer, Paris hipsters move west to the Bois de Boulogne, where the Institut Bonheur (which also has an ephemeral club ‘Cirque Bonheur’) organizes open-air weekend parties in the gardens of Bagatelle, and the Chalet des Îles restaurant organizes its ‘Petit chalet entre amis’ party evenings. Not far away, at the Longchamp racecourse, the Garden Party offers an unusual setting for summer evenings. Finally, watch out for venues such as the Grand Palais or the Grande Halle de la Villette that regularly host electro evenings. Berlin-style underground evenings are also much in vogue, with ‘Die Nacht’ or ‘Weather’ evenings which take place in some huge disused venue, often kept a secret until the last minute. > Live music at a hotel

Hotels are not just for sleeping in. While hotel bars are an established trend, some hotels are going further and making them lively open and dynamic places to socialize and enjoy entertainment. Undoubtedly a pioneer of this trend is Mama Shelter with its huge lobby comprising several bar/restaurant areas and stages for live music. In February 2012, it was joined by the W Opéra, an American establishment intended to bring a bit of New York energy into the Opéra district, and by the arty Jules and Jim, in the Marais. The Ritz and the Plaza Athénée have become references for a night out, not just for an aperitif; Thursdays at the Ritz draw top DJs (Ariel Wizman, Estelle S., Charles Schilling, etc.), and at the Plaza Athénée, there are the Red Hours electro-rock sets, from Thursday to Saturday, from 10pm to 2am in the morning. At the Murano, musicians and singers are invited to perform on some evenings in the week, whilst DJs are invited to the designer bars at the Kube and Pershing Hall. The latest initiative to date: ‘Suite n°7’, a series of exlusive concerts at palace hotels … A confidential rendezvous that has been taking place every month since September 2012 in Paris and the provinces. > Evenings out aboard a bus

A bus transformed into a mobile nightclub is the latest trend for revellers in Paris! The Soiree Bus vehicle is available for privatization and offers an unforgettable evening. On board, you will find a DJ turntable, multicoloured strobe and spotlights, disco decor and, optionally, drinks and appetizers. The bus travels around the capital allowing you to stop off at its best monuments. Paris night rides are also possible each Monday, on individual registration, departing from close to the Louvre Museum. PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR NIGHT OWLS To find your way around at night as easily as you do in the daytime, here is some useful information. How to get around Paris at night.

> Night transport

Getting around the capital late at night or going back home or to a hotel is now easy thanks to Noctilien the city’s network of night buses. The service operates when the metro and daytime buses stop. > Even better at night

What a pleasure, strolling through the galleries of a museum or a department store when the majority of visitors have headed home! Same sensation when the swimming pool empties and you take the night-time opportunity to swim a few lengths.

> Evenings of art

Events like Nuit Blanche, Fête de la Musique and Nuit des Musées provide an unusual and fun way to explore Paris in a different way – all night long and free of charge – by following a musical or artistic itinerary. Two nights each year, in June and on St Nicholas Day (6 December), the prestigious art galleries near the Élysée Palace and the 123 antique dealers of the Carré du Rive Gauche, between Saint-Germain and the Musée d’Orsay, invite art buffs for a nocturnal stroll in the galleries. www.art-rivedroite.com www.carrerivegauche.com www.fetedelamusique.culture.fr www.nuitdesmusees.culture.fr

> Open very late or all night

Paris never sleeps ... Should you be in need of medicine, feel like giving flowers, or be a little (or very) hungry, everything is possible at night in Paris. Even for more unexpected needs: a computer problem, a cyber cafe to send an email to the other side of the world in the middle of the night, an urgent photocopy, a moonlight beauty treatment, etc.

> Brunch

There’s nothing like a good brunch to recover from a night of partying! Lots of Parisian cafes and restaurants serve brunch on Sundays, and, as it has become quite fashionable, there are many new variations on the concept: gastronomic home deliveries, yoga-brunch at Wanderlust, brunch lessons at the Atelier des sens, second-hand clothes sale and brunch or concerts at La Rotonde, brunch at the hotel at the Auberge Flora or Bel Ami, in a garden at Saut du Loup or even at the market at La Petite Fabrique. A selection of new fashionable addresses.
