MISA EN ESPAÑOL
Invoking once again the writings of Saint Francis of Assisi, Pope Francis has published a new encyc-lical promoting universal fraternity among all human beings. ”[Saint] Francis felt himself a brother to the sun, the sea and the wind, yet he knew that he was even closer to those of his own flesh. Wherever he went, he sowed seeds of peace and walked alongside the poor, the abandoned, the infirm and the outcast, the least of his brothers and sisters.”
In a time when it seems that western civilization is regressing into former patterns of enmity and distrust and the divine order which eternal truth brings to the chaos of human history is obscured by the relativizing clamor of particu-larity—of persons, of economic and social self-interest—Fratelli Tutti is a reminder to all that beyond every contingent difference is the fact that we are all brothers and sisters, children of One God and Father.
Pope Francis offers an extended meditation on the Parable of the Good Samaritan to guide our reflection. This story is Christ’s answer to the question “What must I do to inherit eternal life.” The parable

transcends customary conceptions of neighborliness and who has a claim to our charity. It is not just our blood relations, nor our religious confreres, nor our economic cartels, nor our fellow citizens who are the neighbors we should love as ourselves. The one who has the first and greatest claim on our love is the stranger in need. It is only in loving the stranger that charity finds its perfect expression. All other charity may otherwise be disguised mutual or self-interest.
The life of Saint Francis of Assisi is particularly illustrative of the Gospel imperative of charity. He

Dear Families and Friends in Christ! As we all share in the events taking place in our country, and in the
world, it occurs to me that we have an amazing opportunity to contribute to the solutions that will eventually affect the next generation and beyond. By stepping back and looking at the ‘big picture,’ you see the need for a common thread that human nature inherently recognizes as worthy for all to follow and integrate into daily life. Identifying as Children of God is starting to sound like a cliché but it is the answer to everything we face right now.
Currently I am reviewing the “Directory of Catechesis,” which is the handbook for Religious Ed programs in the Catholic Church. On page 12, I read, “The fundamental role of the baptized is recognized (in forming Catholics). In their dignity as children of God, all believers are active partic-ipants in the catechetical initiative, not passive consumers or recipients of a service, and because of this are called to become authentic missionary disciples.” (pg 12) Keep in mind this work is developed by Vatican scholars, under the final editor Pope Francis.
Not to sound like a school principal or anything, ☺ there are opportu-nities to become more involved in our church, to become closer to God daily and to model what a Child of God looks like. These tasks are starting points for relationships with your children and chances to talk about the good you can do for others. Check out this list with other family members and see if anything pops out!
1. Get involved one of our Commissions. Msgr Mak is developing a couple new ones at the moment and you could be part of a grass-roots movement if you are quick to ask him! There is an opening on the Education Commission, too. One meeting each month via Zoom or in-person. Contribute your time and talents to promote the education of our young parishioners and adult faithful as you are able.
2. Can you organize a fund-raiser with a group of friends? Msgr Mak would like nothing better than to have a Parish Chicken Dinner at some point! In the meantime, Religious Education would like to repay the cost of the bus to NCYC in Indianapolis! There is another trip coming up in 2021 and we would appreciate funds raised on behalf of our teens to attend this life-changing event.
3. Do you enjoy meeting people? Volunteer to greet folks coming into mass and assist them to enter reverently. Volunteer to usher and make sure people are safely seated to protect our parish community.
4. Social Concerns’ yearly Advent Giving Tree. This committee is currently gathering names and organizing the project for parishioners to select their Advent Gifts. Do you know people who could use help at Christmas due to Covid-19 ramifications in their lives? Please let us know who they are so we can help.
5. Youth Masses. We are in the planning stages and could use a Core Team of 2-3 people to communicate with teens and coordinate musical performers with Steve Janetti.
I could literally offer pages of opportunities, but these are good examples of the variety of needs in church circles! If you would like to hear more about these positions, or have something to offer, please call me anytime! You can contribute as an active participant, instead of a recipient, by growing your time in God’s House. We need you!
Many Blessings, and prayers that your heart will yearn to step further into the comfort of His love and His Church.
Vicki ☺☺

Immaculate Heart of Mary, we entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick.
At the foot of the Cross, you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith.
Patroness of the Diocese of Jefferson City, you know what we need.
We are certain of the power of your intercession, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial.
Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us.
He who taught us to “love one another, as I have loved you” took our sufferings upon Himself and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection.
Bring under your mantel of protection all who provide care for the sick and minister to their needs, as your Son implores us to do for one another.
V. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God.
R. Do not despise our pleas and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

DEACON’S CORNERMy earliest recollection of a presi-
dential election is the second term for President Dwight D. Eisenhower. I can remember the campaign button of, “I Like Ike”. Throughout the presidential years of election, I came to see, hear, and learn about candi-dates through my parents, grand-parents, relatives, and friends who would discuss, debate, and argue over their candidates. As I would hear about the accomplishments, non-ac-complishments, and mudslinging of the candidates, one thing I have come to learn as a Catholic, is the need to develop a well-formed conscience.
The Catholic Bishops of the United States published “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call to Political Responsibility” at its General Meeting in November 2015 and provided an updated intro-ductory letter in November 2019.
“Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call to Political Responsibility” is a teaching document on the political respon-sibility of Catholics, that provides guidance for those wanting to exercise their right and duty as citizens to vote. As faithful Catholic citizens, we are encouraged to embrace our citizenship with partic-ipating in building not only a life for ourselves and our families but also to assist and support all of God’s children. In doing so, we need to embrace our citizenship as an oppor-tunity with building a culture that embraces the virtues and values as Catholics void of our political party. As such, our participation for those seeking public office should be influ-enced by our faith and not by the political party we belong.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) states that it is the duty of citizens “ ..to contribute along with the civil authorities to the good of society in a spirit of truth, justice, solidarity, and freedom. The love and service of one’s country follows from the duty of gratitude and belongs to the order of charity. Submission to legitimate authorities and service of the common good require citizens to fulfill their roles (with voting) in the life of the political community.” CCC
2239The CCC also states that “Political
authorities are obliged to respect the fundamental rights of the human person (born and unborn). They will dispense justice humanely by respecting the rights of everyone, especially of families and the disad-vantaged.” CCC 2237
As with any election, we have the need to seek out, become informed and take part in the political process. We need to understand the public character of each candidate and where that public character aligns itself with our Catholic beliefs and faith. Again, our participation for those seeking public office should be influenced by our faith and not by the political party to which we belong.
As citizens and as Catholics we have significant individual power to support the values, principles, and virtues of our faith by becoming informed of those candidates that not only align but also support those values, principles, and virtues of our faith. Looking beyond campaign rhetoric along with our individual power, we can promote those candi-dates according to their principles and not party affiliation.
I encourage reading, “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call to Political Responsibility” by the Catholic Bishops of the United States at www.usccb.org and the Missouri Catholic Conference at mocatholic.org, “Consciences for Faithful Citizenship”. Both are great readings with regards to moral principles, specific issues, and moral guides.
Blessings – Dcn Jim

continued from front coverlived in a time not unlike our own when continual warfare among the city-states of Italy had disrupted the social order and created great amounts of poor. Saint Francis himself risked his life to meet with the Sultan of Egypt to preach a Gospel of peace and brotherhood and not of warfare and subjugation.
I know within our minds the automatic response to such an impractical and lofty ideal is to say, “Yes, but…” The first step to conver-sion—a biblical word meaning the changing of one’s mind—is to ignore that impulse to reject and simply say, “yes”. There is no doubt that the priest saw the man beaten and lying in the ditch, “yes, but I have obliga-tions to take care of.” And the Levi did the same, “Yes, but I must not tend to his wounds lest I too become impure.” It was the Samaritan, the hated enemy who truly fulfilled the dictates of the law and was moved with compassion for his brother.
I encourage everyone to read the full text of the encyclical which can be found on the Vatican’s website. Saint Francis is the perfect model for our times. We might be amazed at what he was able to accomplish in his short life and the inspiration he has provided for so many genera-tions of Christians and non-Chris-tians alike. But remember that what Saint Francis did was a result of who he was. His dramatic conversion from an impetuous, self-indulgent cad to a man filled with love and gratitude for God’s grace is a story we need to be reminded of. The change we wish to happen in the world must begin with a change in our own hearts, where the love of God casts out all fear and impels us to share that love with all our brothers and sisters of this world.
