NEW ORLEANS TRACK CLUB

EDITORIAL COMMENTAnother year is nearly

over in the history of New Orleans Track Club with elections looming in June.As an elected member of the board, I am disappointed that more members aren't willing to serve on the board.

Since I first joined NOTC in 1985, I have been struck by the fact that only approximately 20-30 members ever get seriously involved with the running of the club. That's only about 4% of the total membership. What is so striking about this phenomenon is not that it is so typical of volunteer organizations, but that the other 96% of the club appears to spend its time complaining to the board instead of becoming board members and changing things. Why do so few members seem willing to devote even one evening a month to attend a board meeting? When board members call other members to run for the board each year, we don't get cooperation; we get excuses why you can't run and then the rest of the year we get complaints about how the club is running its races.

Now is the time for you, the inactive members, to consider: if you are always complaining, how are you helping to change things for the better? If all you seem to do is complain, perhaps you should consider running for the board to see how the decision-making process operates in the club and how you can actively change things. The New Orleans TrackClub is a volunteer organization like so many others in the community. However, it cannot survive unless more of its members are willing to accept the responsibility of working on the board each year. Asking only a handful of members to

shoulder all the administrative tasks associated with running NOTC, a 700-member organization, is unfair. We need you just as you claim you need us.However, unless you are willing to devote some time and energy to the club's activities, please don't spend all your time complaining to the board members because you don't like something. DO SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE! RUN FOR THE BOARD AND CHANGE THE THINGS YOU THINK NEED CHANGING!Diane Thornhill Editor

Because of the illness of this editor, the previous issue of Footprints was produced by another person. The articles found on pages 21, 22, 23, and 24 regarding the Jackson Day Race history and the Mardi Gras Marathon history were intended to go into that issue but were not included. They are, therefore, presented here as a special courtesy for the members. We want to especially thank Mr. Richard Newcomb for his contributions.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

ATTENTION 1985 MARDI GRAS

MARATHON PARTICIPANTSWe have found a box of

1985 Mardi Gras Marathon t- shirts. if you COMPLETED the 1985 Marathon and can prove it, you are eligible to receive one of these shirts. The shirts will be given to 1985 finishers on a while- they-last basis. Contact me at 468-1488. I have the official results.

One of NOTC's newly acquired races destined to be a favorite was this year's Fairgrounds Classic. See article and results in this issue.

Footprints

The first part of the 1988 running season is over with the finish of the 10th Anniversary of the Crescent City Classic, the cream of the crop of running events in New Orleans. Over 27,000 runners, walkers, and wheelchair participants completed the race.

NOTC was highly visible at the Crescent City Classic. Most of our early spring schedule was filled with 10K races which we were pleased to offer as qualifiers and/or training races for the CCC.

Even though we had very fast runners in every race, our efforts were genuine in making sure that all entrants, regardless of their finish places and times, received top quality races. This is what has made the CCC so successful throughout the years and has worked in our much smaller races also.

NOTC's late spring and summer schedule brings shorter distance races. Keep up your training by using these races to maintain your edge throughout the hot * months.

Finally, I would like to recognize the support of the following businesses and companies for their assistance to NOTC: Phidippides in Metairie and New Orleans, Footlocker, YMCA-Superdome, Sneaker Shop on Harrison Avenue, Scaffolding Rental, Barq's, RC, 7UP, Lie Beer by Miller, Bud Light Beer, Coors Beer, Kentwood Spring Water, and Domino's Pizza.

ELMWOOD CLASSIC CHILLED BONES, NOT SPIRITSC huck G eorge, Executive

The 1988 Elmwood Classic was a huge success in spite of the bone-chilling, below- freezing temperature.Elmwood Classic is Jefferson Parish's largest road race, bringing in over $8,000 for the Harahan Rotary Scholarship Foundation.

The Harahan Rotary Scholarship Foundation provides funding to needy students in the East Jefferson area. The Elmwood Classic race was conceived by NOTC member Randy Martin several years ago with the idea of providing a catalyst in supporting the Rotary Club's Scholarship Fund.Since that time, the race has grown to be the largest in the parish.

Randy Martin and Assistant Race Chairman Jeff Stern helped plan and execute this year's race. The only thing they couldn't control was the unseasonably cold weather.

Since Elmwood Classic is a qualifier for the Crescent City Classic A and B groups seeding, the race attracted a large field in the 10K. Of those runners, 164 were able to qualify for the sub-43:00 minute times needed for CCC.

In the 10K, Muriuki Ngatia ran away with the race in 30:17 (a 4:52 pace), the second fastest 10K time since the 1987 Crescent City Classic. Mark Malander and Wayne Chenet were second and third in 32:00 and 33:12, respectively. One of the fastest rising local runners was Jim Garvey in fourth place with a 33:15.

The 10K women's field included nearly every top ranked local runner in the New Orleans area. Sandy Harvey turned in the winning time of 36:49. She was followed by Carole Smith, one of the West Bank Urban Animals, in 37:20 and Tina Niklaus in 38:36. Kathy Hardy took fourth place and first masters in 39:02.

The 5K men's field was dominated by John Ratcliff who ran a 14:50. John is a former State Champion distance runner from Bonnabel High School in Kenner.

Director

Muriuki Ngatia took first place in the Elmwood Classic 10K

Laurie Hart won the 5K in 18:04; Lisa Fuselier took second in 18:18; and Cheryl Perez took third place in 19:36. Cheryl is making a stong comeback after a year beset with injuries.

In spite of the very cold weather, runners and their families enjoyed Popeye's Chicken and Biscuits, Zack's Frozen Yogurt, Fresh Fruit from Guercio, Pepsi Cola, Lite Beer by Miller, and Kentwood Spring Water and 10K. They also received pink, long- sleeved shirts with unique, colorful artwork. One unfortunate, chilling aspect of the festivities occurred when the scheduled band could not play. Their instruments would not function in the below-freezing temperature, and they had to cancel.

Special thanks go to our sponsors— Elmwood Fitness Center, Elmwood Medical Center, Gibbs Construction, Magnolia Plantation, Champ's Body Shop, Elmwood Business Association, Laitram Corporation, and Muhl and Associates--all of whom are located in the Elmwood

business area. They sponsor not only the race, but they support their community.

Thanks again to our volunteers, the members of the Harahan Rotary Club, and tci Race Chairmen Randy Martin and Jeff Stern. Randy reminds everyone to mark his/her 1989 calendar on February 11, the date of the next Elmwood Classic, Jefferson Parish's largest road race.

NEW ORLEANS TRACK CLUB CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARYChuck George, Executive Director ""Th*"- 1 V 1 ?

New Orleans Track Club ff f fl Bcelebrated its 25th Anniversary with silver: t- shirts, cups, race numbers, and special race awards were printed in silver. Many of the club's founding members and former presidents were invited to attend the race and postrace activities. Among those present were Al Briede, III,Mayo Emory, Ed Fleischmann,Larry Fuselier, Cary Kuhlmann, John McMahon, Sam McNeely, Richard Newcomb, and George Owen. Current NOTC President Rick Lusky made the awards presentation. Because so many of the club's longterm members ran the race.Chuck George was able to call some of NOTC's past presidents and longest standing out most of the finishers by members gathered for the 25th Anniversary Racename.Nearly 500 entrants participated in the l-mile and 5-mile events. Desmond O'Connor claimed victory in the 5-mile race in 26:09. Junius Nixon and David Bellar took second and third place in 26:19 and 26:31, respectively.Laurie Hart won the women's division title with a time of 28:55. Carole Smith came in second in 29:59, and Lisa Fuselier claimed third with a 31:31.Bellar and Hart each claimed the President's Cup awards for being the first male and female NOTC members to finish the race.Other race highlights included some great jambalaya and live music by the Backsliders who were accompanied by NOTC member Jeff Hannusch after he completed the race. Raceparticipants enjoyed the facilities of Delgado Fitness Center as well as the products of race sponsors Dixie Beer and Kentwood Water. Thanks to our great sponsors and the homecoming style atmosphere, the postrace activities lasted longer than usual.

FAIRGROUNDS CLASSIC

Congratulations to the New O rleans Fairgrounds Racetrack on a most successful racing season and a great "Fairgrounds Classic" 10K race.

The First New Orleans Fair Grounds Classic joined NOTC's schedule of races this March and is destined to become one of the best races in the area. Thanks to the efforts of Ms. Sandra Salmon, Ms. Vicky Bayley, and Mr. Irvin Magri, the race has become a reality, allowing NOTC to produce a quality race in a most unique setting: the New Orleans Fair Grounds.

In spite of this year's tough weather conditions-- rainy and hot, runners were treated to a really good time. They enjoyed jambalaya, beer, soft drinks, popsicles, and numerous other treats courtesy of the New Orleans Fair Grounds and the supporting sponsors. This newest 10K followed a course beginning in the Fair Grounds and proceeding up Esplanade Avenue, along Wisner, out to Robert E. Lee Blvd. and back again. Originally designed to finish on the racetrack itself, the course had to be changed at

Charlie Meaux took first place at the Fairgrounds ClassicMens 10 Km Resultsthe last minute because of

the wet, muddy conditions on the track where it was loriginally scheduled to end.

Defying the weather conditions, Charlie Meaux finished first overall in 34:43, and Virginia Besthoff took the women's first place in 41:58. All winners, which included 10 deep awards in both male and female categories as well as age group awards in each, received unique plaques with horseshoe designs affixed, a really classy departure from the traditional race trophies.

Be certain to mark your March 1989 calendars to include the Fair Grounds Classic 10K. It is destined to be a major spring event.

SPRING HARBINGER: STORYLAND 10K

Chuck G eorge, ExecutiveStoryland 10K, an annual

event in which all proceeds go to benefit City Park's Storyland for children, is one of NOTC's most popular children's races.

Volunteers from NOTC, Tchoupitoulas Running Club, and the Friends of Storyland combine to produce this fine race sponsored by Pelican Homestead.

Mark Malander continued his winning streak with a 31:16 time. He finished with a 2-minute margin ahead of the next finisher in the 10K. Carole Smith took the women's division in an equally impressive time of 36:52.

The children's half-mile run winning times went to Greg Henry in 2:52 and Heather McBride in 3:18.

This year's race had the largest turnout ever with nearly 1000 entrants in the two races. Highlights of the post-race activities included free passes to Storyland, Barq's Root Beer, Lite Beer by Miller, and Domino's Pizza.

NOTC produces this raceYoung runners poised for flight at the Storyland Race in City Park

every year as a way of thanking City Park for its support of the running community throughout the year.

RUNNING WITH HISTORY: JACKSON DAY RACE 1907-1987The following information was taken from a two-part article written by Richard Newcomb which appeared in Footprints in November/December, 1980 and January/February, 1981 issues.

The Jackson Day Race, the oldest footrace in the deep south, made its debut on January 8, 1907. The run pre-dates even New Orleans Athletic Club's first Turkey Day Race by eleven months. The historic race commemorates the route that Gabriel Villere and his men took to warn General Andrew Jackson that the British were advancing upon the city prior to the Battle of New Orleans in 1815.

From old newspaper accounts, the original race appears to have been the idea of R. M. Ward, Physical Director of the Young Men's Christian Association. For the next forty-seven years, until 1953, the YMCA sponsored the race over various courses and distances.

The race always started in the ruins of Old Spanish Fort on the Lakefront and finished at the end of Pirate's Alley in the French Quarter. At various times, depending on weather conditions and road construction, the race course also included parts of Marconi Drive, Esplanade Avenue, and North Claiborne Avenue. The present course follows all paved streets andis five-and-a-half miles, 140 feet long. The 1907 race received much fanfare and publicity from YMCA officials. The Daily Picayune puolished a photograph of the entries the day before the run. On race day, ten motor cars lined up in front of the YMCA on St. Charles Avenue for the procession out to Spanish Fort.Thirty-one runners entered the race in 1907, all YMCA members. The race was not handicapped, but runners were divided into two groups: Group A, the experienced runners, and Group B, the beginners. Group B was given a two minute head start on Group A. Eventually, Group C

was added and started two minutes ahead of Group B.This crude handicapping system continued until 1920. In 1920, runners were handicapped against the fastest contestant in the race. This system prevailed until 1977 when age groups became the vogue of the day.

The winner that first year was F. P. Hammat in a time of 40:00, not very good by today's standards. The 1907 course was nearly identical to the present course, except that it was run on the east bank of Bayou St. John. The east bank had a shell road that was muddy and difficult to run more often than not. The present route through City Park along Wisner Blvd. was added much later.

Following the first race, the participants and other guests attended a banquet at the YMCA. The group toasted everyone, and race officials hoped thatother groups would participate in future Jackson Day Races.Unfortunately, rivalries and dissension m the running community existed during that era. In 1908, New Orleans Athletic Club (NOAC), then known as the Young Men's Gymnastic Club, sponsored a seven mile race on the same day as the Jackson Day Race. YMCA officials were not fazed. They held Jackson Day as planned, and nineteen runners took off at the starter's gun. These early Jackson Day Races were attended by large crowds and received good newspaper coverage, even though runner participation averaged only eighteen or twenty entrants per race. With the onset of World War I, newspaper coverage wained and race entries dwindled to a mere handful. Between 1918 and 1925, not more than eight runners participated in any of the races.Between 1925 and 1939, the race enjoyed a modest revival. Newspaper coverage improved, and race entries averaged between fifteen and twenty runners. During this period, runners from Tulane University, Louisiana State University, and other area colleges participated in the

race. During World War II, entries and interest also remained high. Many of the winning runners between 1940 and 1946 were servicemen stationed in and around New Orleans.

After World War II, high school cross country teams suddenly discovered that the Jackson Day Race was worth noting. Team entries from Fortier, Jesuit and St.Aloysius began to appear in the results as interest in the race increased. Between thirty and forty runners participated in the races until 1953. One notable participant was Joe Fuselier, a student at Jesuit in the late forties. Another was Cliff Cooney who ran for Fortier.

For some inexplicable reason, the 1953 race was the last sponsored by the YMCA. After forty-seven uninterrupted years, the tradition that had lasted through two world wars and the Great Depression came to an abrupt halt in the prosperous 1950's. The race languished in oblivion for eleven years, only a memory to those who had taken part in it.

In 1965, New Orleans celebrated theSesquincentennial Anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans. As part of the festivities, the Jackson Day Race was reinstated. Among other celebration memorabilia, the post office issued commemorative stamps, and the Times-Picayune provided extensive coverage on both the sports and front pages.

Twenty-six runners lined up near the ruins of Spanish Fort for the start of the race. Louis de Lassus fired the starter's gun, and the Jackson Day Race was reborn.

Richard Newcomb won the race, and Louis Maraist won the time prize. The winners received silver medallions commemorating the Sesquicentennial. All the other finishers received bronze medallions.

The Jackson Day Race has been run every year sincethat time. It has now grown to nearly 2000 runners and is a featured race in Racine South magazine.

JACKSON DAY MEMORABILIA MEANS MEMORABLE PEOPLEThe following information was taken from articles written by Richard Newcomb for the November-December 19F30 and January-February 1901 issues of Footprints.

Any story of the Jackson Day Race would not lie complete without mention of the memorable people who participated in the race over the years.C. J. Manson

C. J. "Pop" Manson, a Carrollton milkman and father of nine children, should be mentioned first. If you are over forty, you might remember "Pop," not as a Jackson Day participant but as an old man running in front of Mardi Gras parades with a small suitcase in his hand.

"Pop" Manson was born in 1875 and orphaned at age three. He did not start running until 1905 when he was thirty, but he competed in some way almost till the time of his death in 1960. * He won Jackson Day four times and the time prize three times. He competed in all , but four of the races from ’ 1907 until 1940 when he was literally forced into retirement by unenlightened YMCA race officials who thought a man of sixty-five "might damage his heart" in the run.

Working as an official the following year, "Pop" was heard grumbling over his untimely retirement. He told other race officials he"would race any man there from New Orleans to Baton Rouge, and beat them all."

"Pop" would do anything to insure a smooth Jackson Day Race. In 1946, he flagged down a long freight train wnere the Wisner overpass now stands in order to allow the runners to pass.Mike Zelqler

The foremost runner of the pre-World War I era was Mike Zeigler who won the time prize on six occasions. He set a record on the course of 33:40 in 1915 which held until Martin Pierce ran 33:38 m 1931. Zeigler served as a race official for many years after his retirement in 1917.

Gilbert WadeGilbert Wade held the

Jackson Day outstanding runner title in the 1920's. He won the race three years in a row, finishing all in near record time. In the 1927 race, he took a wrong turn which cost him precious seconds, and he still finished in 34:05.Martin Pierce

With the entrance of college cross country runners in Jackson Day during the thirties, finishing times began to drop. Martin Pierce from LSU broke Mike Zeigler's record in 1931 and ran eleven seconds faster the following year.Louis de Lassus

Louis de Lassus appeared at Jackson Day in 1938 and promptly lowered the race'srecord time to 32:20. Never seriously challenged in his five year reign as champion, de Lassus ran 30:47 in 1941.Spencer Johnson

In the late forties, a Tulane student, Spencer Johnson, won the race four straight years. Sadly, he never came close to de Lassus's record.Sal Escoto

During the 1950's, Sal Escoto, a merchant seaman, appeared briefly on the scene, winning the race three times and setting a record of 28:52 in 1953. The course that year was a new one but was considerably shorter than the course over which de Lassus set his record.Billy Wick— Course Record

The current course record is still held by Billy Wick who is now deceased.Wick ran 26:20 in the 1969 race.Taylor Aultman

Taylor Aultman won the race five consecutive times in the 1970's, posting near record times at each win.

When comparing the winning times over the history of Jackson Day, it is

only fair to point out that the early runners' courses were usually run on rutty, muddy shell roads. At various times the course was lengthened because of construction or for other reasons. Some of the courses could have been as long as six-and-a-half miles, which accounts for the fluctuation in finishing times.Occasionally, fimsr.ing times were not correct because race officials did not reach the finish line before the runners. continued on Page 24

Jackson Day Race Revived in 1964 by Richard Newcomb

Most people believe that New Orleans Track Club revived the Jackson Day Race in 1965 to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans. However, the New Orleans Road Runners Club (now NOTC) conducted the Jackson Day Race in Audubon Park on January 11, 1964, a departure from the traditional race course from Spanish Fort to Jackson Square. In honor of the occasion, Mayor Victor Schiro sent a letter to New Orleans Road Runners Club commending the club for reviving the historic race. (See letter reproduced here.)

The race washandicapped, as most NOTC races were until the midseventies. Paul Arsuaga, a top high school miler of the day, won the race with an actual time of 27:38. (See newspaper article this issue.) Farnum Smith from Keesler Air Force Base won the time prize in 27:06.The race course started in Audubon at the Laurel

\ Street intersection and | finished a block below | Tchoupitoulas Street at the j end of the second lap. The j Zoo expansion and Batture j Road did not exist at that Jtime. Runners also had to fend for themselves when crossing Magazine Street since there was always a shortage of officials in those days.

FROM OUT OF THE PAST: MARDI GRAS MARATHONInform ation supplied courtesy of Richard Newcomb

"From 1963 to 1966, New Orleans Track Club was known as New Orleans Road Runners Club. In 1964, the newly formed club decided to hold an annual marathon to be known as the New Orleans Marathon. (The name Mardi Gras Marathon would come later.)," wrote Richard Newcomb in a recent letter to New Orleans Track Club."Up to that time, most of the club's twenty or so members had been content to run bi-weekly races of three, four and five miles, and they trained accordingly. Few runners in those days ever ran more than eight to ten miles in a workout. Running longer distances was not considered the sane or practical thing to do."Enter J. D. 'Sarge' Shaffer. 'Sarge' Shaffer, in his late 40's at the time and an old marathoner, had been pushing the membership to hold such a marathon. Finally, the members agreed to 'Sarge's' demands and planned a marathon, along with two preliminary races to be scheduled over a period of several months."The first preliminary race, a 15-miler, was run on December 19, 1964. The race followed a course along the Mississippi River Levee, starting on the levee at the intersection of South Carrollton and St. Charles Avenues."Seventeen runners completed the out-and-back course that cold day. The turn around point was near Colonial Country Club. Paul Arsuaga won the race in 1 : 2 9 : 2 8 .

"The second race, a 20- miler, was held on January 30, 1965 and followed the same course as the 15-miler. The 10-mile turn around point was approximately one block before Williams Blvd. in Kenner. Dan Fuselier won first overall from a field of 31 runners in a time of 2:2:50."Marcn 6, 1965 marks the first marathon ever run in Louisiana and the beginning of the history of the race that became the Mardi Gras Marathon. The marathon followed the same course as

the two previous long races, out and back along the Mississippi River Levee. The turn around point was in St. Rose, above Kenner. At that time, St. Rose still had cow pastures on the levee, and gates had to be opened to allow the runners to pass. Harry Belin, a Tulane University track star, won the race in 2:47:30.

"The weather during the first New Orleans marathon was cold at the start, but it was sunny and clear. As the day progressed, the weather turned warm. There were no 'aid' stations during the race; however, 'Sarge' brought cokes out to the runners on the last few miles of the race.

"This first marathon had twenty starters with twelve of those runners finishing the race. The only record of the event was published in the Times-Picayune on March 7

Richard Newcomb was one of those runners who completed the first New Orleans marathon. His experience during the race is a familiar one for many first time marathoners.

"My own recollection of the race is that I was ill prepared to make the

distance. I had run the 15 mile race, but I had only done several training runs of about ¿12 miles," wrote Newcomb.

"I ran the first 19 miles comfortably in about a 7:30 to 8 minute pace. After that point, since there were no aid stations, I left the levee at the Colonial Country Club to get a drink of water from the fountain on the club's golf course. Once I started up the levee again, I suddenly realized that my legs had had it. My last several miles were very difficult.

"I tried one more Mardi Gras Marathon, in 1971. It was a warm, blustery, humid day, and I only lasted about half the race. I decided after that experience that the human body was not designed to run 26 miles." Newcomb still competes, but only at the shorter distances.
