The recent fires have attract'd the atteation o: those having large amont of propeilf orand under insurance. Our local companies have been ve 7 can- tionus in taking large risks in the country, and at- tached clauses to policies Issuel for coestry account which are not acceptable. It has been sappesed that we have sufcient insurance capital in orrmidst to obviate the necessity of using or encooiaging foreign a capitalts or freig companies. UOe epspadnes in the aggregate have minor capitals comparedtotrevs Atlantic companies. In New York C:ty they hale -. about 85 insurance companies, of capitals ranging from $100,00O$5@$0,000, the average rot being over $200,000. How many large fies, sach as occurrel - in the years 1835 and 1845, wold sweep oat ther companies by dozens? This is conclusiva that we to New Orleans and ILouisleua camnct too strongly en- courage foreign capital to locate among us. We do not want any of those dim' utive companiles, located t in country v;:age, or those whicharejust starting business; Lot we want the loration o"compani e tat can take a single risk of lSJO,008O$,0, , and payon demand without quibbling. Onr local companies do e. well, very well, as far as they go; bet the buniess t of the city and the" objects for lnsarsoce are increas- Ing and extending every yea-. With a yearly Is- - crease in the cultivation of cot t o, we maylook every revolving year for la-g6 stvok to accomolate, and though our insmeos compa+tee may take risks e to the largest amon•t p-odemce may dictate; they, at by re-insuring, are often found to be only nominal losers, being protected by foreign compaotes; there- fore, car city and State ehould not entail any higher Srte of taxation on agencies than on our local compa- nies. We learn that one of the agencies of an English i- Company has or wall bear considerable sums of loss by the recent i-es, but being a company of la-ge ca- pital and great resources, it meets all demands promptly, without discount. This is the La3don and Liverpool Company. The lest loss which has been demanded isfor $20,030 on the sosga-house on the OrangeGroveSugarPlantation, belonging to Mr. John Burnside, which was destroyed by fire a few days since, entailing a loss of $60,000, $20,000 being covered by this company. With the sagar-house, engine and fixtures, were burnt 90 hcgsheads osgar s and 1000 barrels molasses. We now can discern the workings of the country clause in the polices issued by our insurance com- pany. Suppose Mr. Burnside hod a policy of 820,000 from one of our componies, what would they pay if they choose to refer to this clause ? He would claim $20,000. The country clause Lays, we pay only one half the claim, so the words read in the clause. We will not comment further on this country clause for the present, as since our remarks it has been greatly modlifed, and some restrictions annulled, much to the satisfaction of all parties. As the season for operations in gunny cloth and bags is approaching, we shall, as heretofore, keep our readers apprised of the state of the Boston market, where nearly all the Calcutta, Manilla and Bombay trade centers. at 105}.The recent fires have attract'd the atteation o:

those having large amont of propeilf orand underinsurance. Our local companies have been ve 7 can-tionus in taking large risks in the country, and at-tached clauses to policies Issuel for coestry accountwhich are not acceptable. It has been sappesed thatwe have sufcient insurance capital in orrmidst toobviate the necessity of using or encooiaging foreigna capitalts or freig companies. UOe epspadnes inthe aggregate have minor capitals comparedtotrevsAtlantic companies. In New York C:ty they hale-. about 85 insurance companies, of capitals ranging

from $100,00O$5@$0,000, the average rot being over$200,000. How many large fies, sach as occurrel-in the years 1835 and 1845, wold sweep oat ther

companies by dozens? This is conclusiva that we toNew Orleans and ILouisleua camnct too strongly en-courage foreign capital to locate among us. We donot want any of those dim'

•utive companiles, located

t in country v;:age, or those which are just startingbusiness; Lot we want the loration o" compani e tatcan take a single risk of lSJO,008O$,0, , and payondemand without quibbling. Onr local companies doe. well, very well, as far as they go; bet the buniesst of the city and the" objects for lnsarsoce are increas-Ing and extending every yea-. With a yearly Is--crease in the cultivation of cot

to, we may look

every revolving year for la-g6 stvok to accomolate, and though our insmeos compa+tee may take riskse to the largest amon•t p-odemce may dictate; they,at by re-insuring, are often found to be only nominal

losers, being protected by foreign compaotes; there-fore, car city and State ehould not entail any higherSrte of taxation on agencies than on our local compa-

nies.We learn that one of the agencies of an English

i- Company has or wall bear considerable sums of loss

by the recent i-es, but being a company of la-ge ca-pital and great resources, it meets all demandspromptly, without discount. This is the La3don andLiverpool Company. The lest loss which has beendemanded is for $20,030 on the sosga-house on theOrange Grove Sugar Plantation, belonging to Mr.John Burnside, which was destroyed by fire a fewdays since, entailing a loss of $60,000, $20,000 beingcovered by this company. With the sagar-house,engine and fixtures, were burnt 90 hcgsheads osgar

s and 1000 barrels molasses.

We now can discern the workings of the countryclause in the polices issued by our insurance com-pany. Suppose Mr. Burnside hod a policy of 820,000from one of our componies, what would they pay ifthey choose to refer to this clause ? He would claim$20,000. The country clause Lays, we pay only onehalf the claim, so the words read in the clause. Wewill not comment further on this country clause forthe present, as since our remarks it has been greatlymodlifed, and some restrictions annulled, much tothe satisfaction of all parties.
