    BIRTHDAY FUN IN THE SUN

A fantastic day of laughter and celebration

YOUR COMPANY MAGAZINE | ISSUE NO.3 AUTUMN 2016

    IN EUROPENew offices in Spain

    and Germany

YOUR SAYThe results from our first staff engagement survey

  • Welcome to the autumn/winter edition of Our Priority, your company magazine, keeping you up-to-date with all the latest Priority Freight news and fun, and of course, our plans and performance.

The last couple of months have been quieter, with volumes from our major customers lower than expected due to shutdowns, and down on last year (which was boosted by ferry issues and Operation Stack). But circumstances can change swiftly, and it’s been busier since the summer bank holiday, so I’m optimistic for a strong finish to our year.

We have a good pipeline of prospective business, including new sectors, slowly reducing our reliance on our top few clients. We have more aviation customers, and are adapting fast to the automotive electric revolution - moving jobs for

day-to-day communication, and are already starting to improve many of the areas you raised. We plan staff feedback sessions across all offices in late September and in early October to include the engagement survey results and a full business update.

Finally, the highlight for me was that wonderful hot day in July when we celebrated our 20th anniversary in Faversham. Over 220 of you joined us in a beautiful Kentish garden with a funfair theme, and a great band who got everybody dancing (or was that the bar?!). It was a pleasure to see so many of you there having a great time. Once again, thank you all for the work you’ve put into our company to make it what it is today. We will only ever be as good as you and the service you offer our customers. Looking around that day, I knew we had the best people to deliver that service, and that, as a team, we will continue to go from strength to strength.

Enjoy the magazine and let’s have a record-breaking, cracking final quarter.

    Best wishes

    LET’S CRACK QUARTER FOUR!

Tesla, producer of the world’s fastest 0-60mph car, and supporting every team on the new Formula E Grand Prix circuit.

We’ve also been making performance-boosting internal innovations. Many of you were involved in the structural changes in Dover’s Logistics, designed for a more consistent approach and improvements to customer experience. Some teething problems are inevitable, but I’m pleased to say that, after just a short period, we’re overcoming them. We’ll also be adding more support to our Operations and Solutions teams from Supplier Management and introducing a Customer Relationship Management system; supporting more knowledgeable, informed and swifter solutions, whilst building a stronger information base from which to develop account relationships.

I’ve been very pleased with our team’s attitude towards these changes so far, and I’m convinced they will help to differentiate us from our competition, and can be rolled-out to our other offices. These changes will help us operate more efficiently as we grow, and provide better opportunities for team members to develop expertise, and their careers.

This quarter saw our first ever staff engagement survey results (more on p12). I was pleased to see high levels of engagement, but want to you know we have received your clear messages around training and

  • cars. So Priority Freight absolutely has to be here, and in Portugal as well, and during this first year we have to show local clients, especially in the automotive and aerospace markets, what we can do.

We had an interesting job early on with Tesla. Ten international teams were racing around the world with Tesla electric cars. They started in Barcelona and needed to get to Canada, then across America. We worked with Portuguese and Canadian authorities, running against the clock (as usual!) to charter a flight and guarantee smooth border crossings with no paperwork issues. We worked non-stop from Saturday

Ihnenfeld who joined us four years ago and has been developing her department’s structure. In Sales is Ulrich Mempel – with over 15 years’ experience in premium freight, he joined us in 2012 and has helped us to build up a solid client structure. The newest member of our family is Bernd Thewissen, who joined in July 2016. As an airfreight expert with a big global network he will be developing airfreight here in Germany.

Our main focus this year is to completely integrate Castrop operationally. Then we’ll transfer some clients to this office where we can offer the best support service. 2016 has seen us gain some big new clients: Westfalia-Automotive, Grohe AG, Falk & Ross, Hai Extrusion and IBS Filtran. Others include Brumann, BFS Europe, Salzgitter Mannesmann, BSM and Fraestehcnik, and we’re delighted to be working with Fujifilm, Kipp and Montaplast again.

We started setting up the new Madrid office in January and opened just five months later in May.

It was a big challenge - you have to consider all the small details as well as the big things, and get everything in place before you start. It’s like a premiere; everything must be perfect to receive your guests!

Spain is a very competitive and mature market and all the big players in logistics have been here for years. It’s the ninth largest automobile producer in the world (second in Europe), producing over 2.5 million

The German office now has a satellite office in Castrop-Rauxel! Mike Koch is completely

integrated into the Willich team and it feels as though he’s sitting here next to his colleagues Nadine and Jonathan. Welcome, Mike, we’re happy to have you on board!

Priority Freight Germany was built up by Reiner Koch. Reiner retired in August and we’re all really sad: we’ll miss him and his decades of experience. Thank you for everything, Reiner, and we wish you a long and happy retirement. To introduce the rest of the team: Nadine Endrikat is one of our long-term employees and a lynchpin of Operations. Jonathan Kribus is our second year apprentice; he’s learned very quickly and now supports senior team members, along with Tadashi Shima, our first year apprentice. In Accounts is Britta

    Carl Partridge Managing Director, Coventry

It’s been a great settling-in period in our new facility, and the entire team’s dedication has contributed to moving the business forward and achieving a 25% increase in productivity.

Steve Twist is enjoying project managing our warehouse operation and has been supporting the team with various other aspects of our site management needs. I am sincerely appreciative of his contribution. The sustained performance of our UK operations team also deserves particular recognition.

By supporting our customers daily with reliable domestic supply chain overflow and/or expedited service solutions whilst maintaining the highest possible service levels, the department has seen a significant increase in productivity compared to the same trading period in 2015. We’re currently organising a bulk inbound sea-freight movement from the US, which requires specialist packing, handling and transportation. And we’ve also been given the opportunity to further support one of our clients with their air chartering requirements, and have since positioned several emergency aircraft for them.

We’ve just installed a section of racking in the warehouse, giving us 1,160 pallet locations – so we’re now prepared – and are officially marketing the additional services we offer, to build on what’s already been secured. The shutdown and holiday period gives everyone a deserved rest, but also lets the management teams assess departmental progress and make adjustments to improve output and manage further growth.

We’ve already been holding stock for clients in aviation and retail, including marketing materials for M&S and Carlsberg. Several meetings are scheduled over the coming months, and we’ve recently submitted tenders for other customers, so it’s pleasing to start seeing a return on our investment so soon. Increased marketing, and support from our Sales and Customer Service teams to promote our portfolio, should help us to fulfil what looks like a promising future.

We welcome Romica Toader, who joined our logistics operations team several weeks ago. Romica has a wealth of logistics and transferable professional skills and will be joining our 4 on, 4 off team in due course, to provide greater 24/7 operational assistance.

It’s shaping up to be an exciting first year for the Spanish office.

Of course, we also had to make sure the cars weren’t damaged during the trip; with close surveillance of the process; from the warehouse to the runway at Lisbon Airport. We followed the cars to keep a close eye on them and checked the documentation to avoid any possible mistakes. I’m glad to say they all arrived safely.

Our plan now is to get embedded in the Spanish and Portuguese automotive and aerospace markets. Achieve this, and we’ll grow fast, I’m sure!

  • IT’S ALL GO AT HEATHROWKevin O’Shea General Manager, London Heathrow

We’ve made good progress in the marine leisure sector, now handling work for two premier sailboat companies in the country: RS Sailing and Topper Sailboats.

An interesting job for Topper Sailboats came up in July – transporting several of their boats to Northern Ireland for one of their events. That was on top of an emergency job Priority Freight did for Topper Sailboats, with just 48 hours to get 11 dinghies over 1,000 miles from Kent to Sardinia!

Marine leisure is a tight-knit industry, so once you’re working for a couple of companies, the ripple effect from word of mouth spreads quickly. We’re working with Selden Masts, the main sailing mast company in the world; nearly every yacht or dinghy will have one of theirs. There are also conversations with Hyde Sails and Spinlock (marine hardware), so we’re in a good place.

A big project involved 160 tonnes of tooling equipment for Faurecia, a major automotive client. It all came in over four weeks needing distribution across Europe. This was a highly technical job which showcased our capabilities at Heathrow.

I was interviewed for the trade press recently about Heathrow and Gatwick, talking about how the third runway would be an advantage here from our business perspective. The next thing I knew, someone contacted me from Japan, congratulating me on my work to ensure it went ahead. The write-up made it sound as though the whole thing was my idea!

Dover goes live!Ed Bembridge General Manager, Dover

Operations Transformation went live on 25th July. After an intensive six month project – the culmination of over 18 months’ planning – the operation was ready to go, and new contact details had been sent to our carriers.

Other than better communications, our clients shouldn’t notice the internal change – but they should be starting to see the benefits. The Customer Solutions Team now liaises directly with them, providing a single point of contact. Previously, liaison involved several different contacts in different departments. Now, a select few will own the relationship with our clients, giving us better opportunities to develop business.

Operations Transformation has been led by a senior level team of ten people. Once we’ve tested and refined it from Dover, we’ll roll it out across all the offices, so it will ultimately impact the whole business.

The sharp-eyed of you will notice Ed’s new job title. Congratulations, Ed, for promotion to General Manager, as well as on your recent 40th birthday! More congratulations are in order: Mindaugas has taken over as Operations Manager and Rachel Kemp is now Customer Experience Manager.

    Stuart Westbury Management Accountant

You might not always see us, but we’re integral to success! Accounts Payable is a great team, making sure suppliers are paid on time. And I make sure staff get paid as well as doing statutory HMRC submissions (like VAT) and monthly management accounts – analysing activity, profit margins and overhead expenditure. This helps management reflect on what’s going well, or not so well – and to put in place future strategies. It all comes full circle!

Sirius is a major positive for us, and I’ve worked with Logistics to get this freight management system integrated with Finance. That’s vital for making the most of opportunities – and invoicing our clients! Development of Sirius continues; we’re fortunate to have a custom-made system adaptable to our growing needs and it’ll continue to evolve with our business and industry.

Although it seems like yesterday, since I started in 2012 the company has grown massively. We used to process about 1,500 purchase invoices a month, now across the group it’s 6,500. Joining a family-run business, it was clear that everyone’s hard work was appreciated, and they took pride in making a difference. People get promoted, and to me that reflects recognition and support for staff who work hard. You don’t always see that in larger organisations.

Claims to fameMy six-year-old daughter, Imogen. My wife went into labour on the hard-shoulder of the M20 outside Folkestone, and I had to deliver her!

    Marina Guk Sales Ledger Supervisor

My job is to make sure all sales invoicing is prompt and as our clients expect. Issuing invoices as soon as work is completed is very important, as the quicker we do it, the faster the company will be paid, and that has a positive impact on cash flow. But it’s also important to understand that efficient and correct invoicing helps to maintain good relationships with our customers. We work closely with Credit Control and Logistics to make sure that happens.

On a typical day I’ll be raising invoices, submitting them via clients’ online portals, investigating cash variances, and dealing with client or internal queries.

I’ve recently been promoted from Sales Ledger Clerk, so a large part of my role now is to monitor shipments for our Dover, Coventry and Madrid offices and make sure that they are all invoiced. I also oversee what we’re doing as a team and help other team members when they need it.

Before I came to Priority Freight just over a year ago I worked in Credit Control for a large food distributor. I actually have a degree in Fashion Design and Technology, but decided to try myself in a different area. In my spare time I enjoy reading and sewing, nothing too extreme. You’re far more likely to find me shoe shopping than parachute jumping!

    Paul Mercer Financial Director

Our excellent finance team supports management, client facing and supplier facing teams (and they don’t count beans). Most importantly, we make sure Priority Freight gets paid, with Sales Ledger issuing invoices accurately, and Credit Control ensuring prompt payment.

Cash flow is the life blood of any business and a reputation as a good payer is important; it’s one of the reasons our suppliers work with us. The POD Admin and Scanning team ensures that we receive pods from our carriers, captured in Sirius. The Accounting team provides management and financial information, and last but by no means least, Payroll ensures that you all get paid.

I joined in July 2006, so I’m celebrating two anniversaries: 20 years of Priority Freight and 10 years for me. When I joined, this was a company with a £4m turnover, but starting to show signs of potential, with turnover jumping to £6.5m that year. We had two offices in Dover and Coventry, 19 logistics and admin employees, and carried out 9,000 transports, many using our own vehicles.

Ten years on we’re a £50m business with 160 employees and completing over 100,000 transports, with six offices in Dover, Coventry, Germany, Poland, Spain and LHR. Through the changes, the company has retained many of its original values, which I think is why many stay for a long time.

Developing a strong base in the aviation sector

    Arkadiusz Kowalewski General Manager, Wroclaw

First, I’d like to congratulate Marcin Pekala, who has recently been promoted to Team Leader here. Good job! The Polish office has been doing well – hitting revenue targets, improving on last year and steadily building our client base in Poland and internationally. In the domestic aviation market we have two new clients – LOT Polish Airlines and Sprint Air – building our position in the sector in Poland. We’re also aiming to be more and more international, and some of our top clients are from Tunisia and Hungary. We also recently successfully moved consignments of mechanical parts to Iran and Turkmenistan, both difficult destinations for air freight shipments because of the complex paperwork requirements and customs procedures.

  • FUN IN THE SUN AT OUR 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

We turned 20 this year and, boy, did we celebrate in style! It was a thrill to see so many of you from all our offices roll up and have a great time.

The day brought out the kids in us all, with bags stuffed full of pick ‘n’ mix, and some real ‘big-kids’ joining the face painting queue (yes, we saw you!). Even the directors got stuck into a spacehopper race (anyone see Paul pop his? Living proof that what goes up, must come down!). Take a look at the many, wonderful and hilarious photos and re-live a brilliant day. A special thank you, every member of our team, for all the hard work that goes into making Priority Freight such a successful and exciting place to work!

Taking tea for A-TEd Bembridge General Manager, Dover

On 20th June, Priority Freight held a very special Tea and Cake day in support of Action for A-T.

A-T, or Ataxia Telangiectasia, is a dreadful (but thankfully, rare) inherited condition that affects young children. Action for A-T asked people to hold tea parties this summer to help fund vital research.

It’s an issue that’s very close to my heart, as tragically my lovely god-daughter Lilly was born with A-T. Some friends and I took part in Scrumrun 2016, a five-day banger car rally across Europe, to raise money, and you lovely people decided to help, too.

To add to the £107 raised by Dover and LHR through baking, selling cakes (and eating – Dover are a hungry lot!), Martina Cunderlikova in Coventry (featured last time) is generously offering massages in return for donations. The offer is still on so don’t miss your chance to feel great and donate! Thank you, everyone.

Playing for England!Michelle Cregeen Credit Controller, Finance

I’ve been a keen player of French pétanque (otherwise known as ‘boules’) since 1998, playing in local leagues, as part of a regional team, and for England in both the Ladies’ team and with my husband, Alan, in the mixed doubles. As well as playing in England, we’ve played in Germany, Italy, Holland, Belgium and, of course, France.

In June, we flew to Copenhagen with the England 2 Ladies’ squad to compete in an international tournament. After three days’ play we were through to the semi-finals of our league, but sadly we got knocked out by the superior Danish and French teams. It was a fantastic experience, though!

In September, I’ll be playing with the regional squad at Hayling Island in a two-day tournament. Kent region has won this six times since 2006, so we’ll be looking to repeat our success! I love everything about playing pétanque – the play, the tactics and of course travelling and competing for England.

WHO’S GONE THE EXTRA MILE?We’re thrilled to introduce the winner of our very first Extra Mile award – meet Jeanet Rasmussen, nominated by Lorelei Norman.

Jeanet always goes out of her way to help her co-workers and clients, and frequently offers to help out even when she’s busy herself. But the Extra Mile she went after the fire really clinched it – helping Lorelei get to and from work for five weeks after her car was destroyed. “I believe Jeanet is the perfect nominee, as she goes out of her way to help everyone both at work and out of work,” said Lorelei. Jeanet, we agree.

Who would you like to see recognised? Send your nominations to [email protected] with a brief outline of why they deserve it.

Staff engagement survey: The resultsWe all want Priority Freight to be a great place to work. With staff turnover and absenteeism figures low, we must be doing something right, but we really wanted to find out how engaged (or not) our teams are. Engagement is often defined as “employees willingness and ability to contribute to the company’s success” and it is important to us to find out how invested in the company you are. The survey was carried out across the three UK offices and Poland and we set ourselves a target of getting 80% of those team members to contribute to the survey. I am delighted to advise that the response rate was 83% so thank you to everyone who took part.

As this is our first engagement survey, we don’t have a benchmark on whether we are more or less engaged as a workforce than before, but we can measure ourselves against interesting research data out there on the British workforce in general. Survey data available has found that between 35% and 39% of the British workforce are indicating positive engagement.

How are we doing? The company result as whole is showing that 59% of you are engaged – this is a very positive result. We also do not have any employees in the survey group who are disengaged and these results are much higher than the general workforce population.

The breakdown by locations is as follows:

The things you are most positive about were your job, the culture and values of the company and how you feel you contribute to its success.

The areas we need to work on centred around communication between teams and departments and getting regular feedback from your managers on how you are doing - we will be working hard in the coming months in making improvements in these areas

We don’t have separate results for LHR unfortunately as the survey group in that office is for the moment too small to report on but the data collected is included in our future actions. We aim to include the German and Spanish offices in our next survey.

Thank you for all your responses –

with your help we will continue to

make Priority Freight a great place

    to work.

We wanted to show our customers the journeys we take as their trusted provider to deliver their consignments intact and on time, so we combined original footage of ‘a day in Priority Freight’ with stock and animation to give a first-hand glimpse of what we do best.
