PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I’ve been trying to come up with something to write in my president’s Message and have really been drawing a blank.
I generally am an early riser and usually sit on the front porch just as daylight is breaking, and every morning this past
week I’ve had a visitor. A beautiful Red Cardinal has been serenading me with his morning song. Now my wife has
told me that when a Cardinal shows up that someone from the past who loves you is checking on you. My response
was yeah, right! Anyhow, now I think maybe there is something to it as I was thinking about my Dad who passed
away in 1984 and a lesson he taught me about patience and caution when I was 9 or 10.
The lesson: My Mom was born and raised in the 69th street area of Philadelphia and she liked to go clothing shopping
in center city. We lived in Frazer, Pa at the time so it was quite a trip back then as there were no interstates built yet.
My Dad who was a truck driver, and knew Philly really well, found a way to cut down on the time it took to drive to
center city. There were two streets that I remember that ran down to all the big department stores. One was one way in
and the other was one way out. Of course there was a traffic light at every block. My Dad used to drive me buggy,
because when he first started down the one way in, he went about 10 mph. I finally had enough of this slow pace and
yelled why are we going so slow. He looked at me in the rear view mirror and said “sometimes you have to slow down
to speed up”. WHAT!!! Here’s where the traffic lights come into play. All the traffic lights on Walnut St, and there
must have been about thirty, were timed. One went green the next would turn red. But, and it’s a Big But, if you kept
your speed at about 23mph you could get them all green and cut a lot of time off your trip. Lesson learned, thanks Dad.
I’m using this as an analogy of our red, yellow and green system of opening up after being quarantined. Red, yes it’s
serious better sit tight, yellow, well I’ll stick my head out and get some fresh air, green, yahoo, let it all hang out. I
believe caution and patience will always prevail in serious cases like this.
In other news, we had our first Directors meeting since March at Jack Robinson’s house in June. The main topic was
the first general membership meeting and how we thought it would be good to have it as a Welcome Back
Party/Member Car Show. The main thing is when that might happen and we will notify everyone when we know. A
Big thank you to Jack for his hospitality.
Also, Thorndale Fire Co sent an email and as of now they have no plans of opening in the near future. They will notify
of any changes.
In closing, I hope everyone is safe and well. We will get through this by practicing patience and caution.

COVER CAR – 1956 Messerschmitt KR200
I saw this car at a show at the Downingtown East High School last year along with a BMW Issetta. While I‘d known of
these “micro” cars I hadn’t actually ever seen one in person. The distinctly German design, and name, of these cars
always intrigued me along with it being very tiny, using just 3 wheels, and having a bubble top. I thought it would be
fun to dig find out more about them.
After WWII and following Germany’s defeat, Messerschmitt wasn’t allowed to build aircraft for 10 years. So the
German firm switched to microcars following a cooperation with engineer Fritz Fend, who previously built engine-
powered invalid carriages. Built from 1955 to 1965 in around 30,000 units, the KR200 is one of the most iconic and
popular bubble cars ever made.
Seemingly inspired by aircraft design, the KR200 features a canopy-style roof that opens onto one side and a central-
mounted driver’s seat. In the back, it either had another seat or a small bench for up to two people. This layout allowed
the body to taper like an aircraft fuselage with a wider front end with two wheels and a really narrow rear end with just
one wheel. The bubble-style canopy allowed decent headroom, while the steering bar was reminiscent of that of an
aircraft and drivers had to swivel it around its axis rather than rotate it as a conventional steering wheel. The
mechanism was connected directly to the track rods of the front wheels, providing an extremely direct response best
suited to small amounts of movement, unlike other common steering mechanisms which involved reduction gearing.
The gearshift lever had a secondary lever on it which, when actuated, would put the car in neutral regardless of what
gear it had been in before, although the transmission would have to be shifted back to first before the car would be able
to move from a standstill.
The tiny 500-pound car features a 191-cc (0.2-liter) two-stroke, single-cylinder engine built by Fichtel & Sachs.
The engine is good for almost 10 horsepower, which is laughable by any standards. However, the KR200 can achieve a
top speed of 56 mph, which is rather impressive given the output.
