Industry shift highlighted atecobuildThe strength of the wider environmental agendathat is now driving both the UK and the globalconstruction industries was reflected by therecord numbers of visitors to ACO WaterManagement’s stand at this year’s ecobuild.Themed around ‘The System Chain’, ACO’s newapproach to understanding and designingsustainable drainage, the stand drew interestfrom architects, developers and contractors fromaround the world looking to explore the latestsolutions for applications across all facets of thebuilt environment.

“We have noticed a marked change in thenature of the enquiries we now receive atecobuild,” comments Peter Ridgway, MarketDevelopment Director at ACO WaterManagement. “The successful management ofwater resources is now recognised as a criticalaspect of the move towards a sustainable future– a fact that was underlined by the volume ofqueries and by the depth of understanding ofthose asking questions.

The System Chain is an important evolution inthe way that we work with this increasinglydiverse and sophisticated customer-base. Itclearly defines all the key processes that need to

be considered and provides a solid foundation forus to explain the benefits of the latest products, materials and support services we supply.”

A special ACO ecobuild Guide that describes TheSystem Chain and gives a review of all thedivisions and product ranges available from ACOWater Management is now available either as ahard copy or as a download – visit the ACOwebsite www.aco.co.uk for details.

Simple watermanagementThe contractor looking for a soakaway systemhas several options, but along with ensuring it’sfit for purpose, he’s looking for somethingquick, easy and trouble free - any way ofreducing workload on a project is alwayswelcome.

The builders merchant has options as well, always looking to stock what the contractor islooking for whilst at the same time having thetechnical and pricing support of a wellestablished supplier.

So with this in mind Fernco Environmental, sister company of Flexseal - the market leaderin flexible couplings – has developed theStormbreaker range. The range includes arainwater harvesting system, and a soakawaykit.

Both contain everything yourcustomer needs!

The Stormbreaker soakaway is a modularsystem assembled using 0.4 cubic metre kits. Each kit contains the 95% void unit, thegeotextile, the adhesive tape, and installationinstructions – one purchase, one product, nowastage. Why excavate 3 cubic metres and use4.8 tonnes of stone, when 1 cubic metre ofStormbreaker holds the same volume of water?

Also designed with ease of purchasing andinstallation in mind, is the Stormbreakerrainwater harvesting system. This high specproduct is preassembled and containseverything you need – one purchase, onecustomised, preassembled system. For more information on these systems, call01226 340 222, email [email protected] orlog on to www.ferncoenvironmental.com.

Hunter Plastics 160mm chamber base is nowthe most sustainable on the market as it ismanufactured from entirely recycled materialfrom miscellaneous sources, including a largepercentage from post consumer waste suchas recycled car battery cases. Car batterieshave traditionally been one of the difficultitems to recycle safely because they arelegally treated as hazardous waste. But nowHunter is tapping in to the national schemefor battery disposal and putting them togood use in the manufacture of one of theirbest-selling underground drainage lines.

As well as its enviably small carbon footprint,Hunter’s 160mm chamber system is its mostversatile and user-friendly ever. It has a160mm through channel with swept 160mmand 110mm side inlets, all with ring sealsockets making the system fast andeconomical to install, and offering the highestquality product of its kind on the market. Itfeatures 2x 160mm connections set at 90ºand 2x 110mm connections set at 45º, all

closed with a removable plug.

Apart from the joint between the base andfirst riser, no additional seals are required fora totally watertight seal. Simple push-fitconnection of pipework to the chamberbaserequires no connectors or reducers for areliable solution for virtually any application.

The product’s environmental credentials havenot resulted in a compromise on quality andtoughness. Strengthening webs on the unit’sbase improves rigidity and makes it morestable during setting out and levelling.Integral supporting legs also improve stabilityand enable stacking of the chamber base tomake it easier and safer to transport and storeon site. Like Hunter’s 110mm chamberbase, the 160mm chamberbase fits Hunter’sstandard raising pieces to achieve therequired height between chamberbase andcover.

The ‘green’ 160mm chamber base is just partof Hunter’s extensive range of undergrounddrainage products in 110mm, 160mm,200mm, 250mm and 315mm sizes. Hunter’sunderground and sewer drainage ranges

meet or exceed British and European qualitystandards, including a kitemark to BS EN1401.

Marley Plumbing and Drainage has furtherexpanded its extensive product portfolio, withthe introduction of a new acoustic soil andwaste system, Marley dBlue.

As well as providing quick, hygienic removal ofsanitary waste water, the triple layered pipedramatically reduces the noise generated bythe flow of water – making it perfect for multi-occupancy apartmentblocks and highspecificationdevelopments.

The result of extensiveresearch anddevelopment, the systemeffectively reduces bothairborne and structuralacoustic vibrations to alevel of 19dB. Within thepipework, the layered

construction absorbs sound waves and reflectsthem inwards, significantly reducing thetransmission of noise to the system’ssurroundings, while an innovative pipe clamplimits acoustic vibrations passing into thebuilding’s structure.

Each of the pipe layers has an individualfunction: the inner skin is resistant to high

temperatures up to 90°C, while thecentral layer provides structuralstrength and noise reductioncapabilities. This middle layer is

formed using a specially developedmaterial formula, which combinesmodified polypropylene withmineral fillers to deliver enhancedacoustic and mechanical

performance.Finally, the outer

layer providesexceptionalimpactresistance and

protection against severe weather conditions.

The uniquely designed pipe clamps furtherreduce noise by suppressing vibrations withinthe system. A special body section containingthree cushioned inlays provides a stable grip, eliminating the acoustic bridge between thedownpipe and the building’s structure.

Fiona Bashford, Marketing Manager at MarleyPlumbing and Drainage commented:

We are proud to bring yet anotherquality product offering to the market, demonstrating our continuedcommitment to investing in innovativenew solutions that meet the needs ofour customers. This high performance, soundproofed soil and waste systemcomplies with Part E regulations and allEuropean acoustic standards.

Methven has unveiled the MaiaSkincare Shower™, which featuresan integral vitamin C cartridge toreduce the chlorine in water andthe award-winning Satinjet®technology, which saves waterand energy withoutcompromising performance.

The integral vitamin C cartridge sitsinside the handset and releases vitaminC into the water stream, helping to purifythe water by reducing the chlorine andthereby combating the drying effect ofchlorine on the skin and hair.

Chlorine, which is absorbed through theskin, can have harmful effects on thebody as it strips the skin of its naturalprotective barrier and dehydrates hair.Regular use of the Maia SkincareShower may leave hair cleaner, silkier and moremanageable and skin may become softer. The Maia Skincare Shower also features aheight-adjustable rail shower; a four-functionhandset offering three types of spray; and, acontemporary, smooth-style hose for easycleaning, which is fitted with a swivel end tominimise twisting.

Maia with Satinjet technology delivers a fullbody shower that cares for the skin bystimulating circulation. Unlike conventionalshower sprays using single jets of water thatcan produce a narrow, needle-like spray, Maiawith its clever twin-jet design, producesthousands of tiny droplets that feel softenough for the face, yet invigorating enough

for the entire body.

The rotating showerhead offers foursettings for the face and body. Bytwisting the showerhead, the spray canbe changed from either the standardSatinjet spray or the massage spray, tothe facial massage option. When infacial massage mode, water passesthrough the outer jets only, creating a"breathing zone" for a longer face-washing session. This gentle sprayallows the user to fully immerse theirface without fear of broken capillaries. In body mode, water cascades over theskin rather than bouncing off - ensuringbetter coverage.

Satinjet technology uses just 9 litres ofwater per minute, saving on water andenergy consumption while stillproviding a wonderful sensoryexperience.

Homeowners can now fit underfloor heating(UFH) on virtually any existing floor thanks to anew ultra-slim plumbed UFH system fromWavin’s Thermoboard division.

Low-Build makes plumbed UFH a realisticalternative to radiators even as part of a retrofitproject. It offers all the advantages of an energy-efficient UFH system without the need to dig upsolid floors or lift floor boards, so causingminimum disruption. This cuts installation times– and therefore costs – without raising floorheights to an undesirable level.

Thermoboard’s Michelle Fleming comments:“The Thermoboard Low-Build system can be laiddirectly over any flat and level floor and with atotal installed height of just 15mm – that’s lessthan the diameter of a 5p piece – meaning thereis less disruption to doors and skirting boardsduring installation. It’s perfect for any retrofitproject.”

The versatile Low-Build system incorporates auniversal panel design which can be used forstraight or curved runs around rooms of anyshape or size, with no need for separate endreturn panels. The ultra-slim polystyrene panelsfeature pre-routed channels to hold 10mmpolybutylene pipe. Each panel has a thinaluminium diffuser layer as a built-in reflector. A6mm ply load-bearing layer may be added ifrequired.

Michelle adds: “It’s simple to work out how manypanels you need; you can cut them to size;they’re easy to install and because the boards

are lightweight, they can be easily carried byone person. In addition, total installation costsare reduced because you don’t have to buy endpanels.

“Low-Build can also be combined with existingheating systems, regardless of the heat source.Often electric UFH systems are used for retrofitjobs as the perception is that they’re easier toinstall but the reality is that they cost 60 per centmore to run than plumbed systems like Low-Build. With Low-Build you’re getting a reallyefficient system which cuts energy costs whileproviding an even heat distribution that can becontrolled with the rest of the heating system oras a separate heating zone with its ownthermostat.”

The system also features on QuickCalc(www.quickcalc.thermoboard.co.uk) - an onlinequotation application.

Home water filter from TapworksFor people who currently ‘hump home’ severalhuge bottles of water from the supermarketeach week, there’s a sensible and cost effectivealternative available from Tapworks.

Water expert Tapworks now offers a ‘wholehome’ water filter unit to filter mains waterthroughout the house. Water filters of differentkinds are common in the UK, but most onlyaffect one separate drinking water tap, installedin a kitchen attached to a small filter system

that requires regular three to six monthly filterchanges, or are small jug filters, which againrequire regular filter changes.

This new unit fits under drawer height in astandard kitchen cabinet, is simple to installand even easier to maintain as it comes with aself cleaning filter that will last between fiveand eight years in a standard three or fourbedroom home depending on water usage.Literally a fit and forget appliance.

And at around £400, for the benefits it offers,it’s very affordable and for average users ofbottled water in the home, it will pay for itselfin less than 2 years – and the filter will still havefour to five years at least to run before it needschanging!

When Sarah Beeny’s TV refurbishment of RiseHall in Yorkshire was endangered, radiatormanufacturer Stelrad played the white knight.

The 200 year old, 30 bedroom, 20 bathroom,Grade 2 listed building requires notinconsiderable heating! Sarah was expecting alorry load of radiators to arrive, to allow thefilming to proceed. When the lorry didn’t arrive, things seemed to be in total disarray.

A phone call to Chris Humphreys and LorraineHawes at Stelrad was followed by a rapidresponse by providing a sensational mix oftheir classy Planar and Classic Column radiatorsin ten different sizes.

“When we first got the call we thought it was awind up,” says marketing co-ordinator, LorraineHawes, “one of the benefits of making more

than 2 million radiators a year and having asizeable stock is that we can meet ‘one off’demands at very short notice.”

Sarah said “Chris and Lorraine were so kind andhelpful – and they did exactly what they saidthey would do – and saved the shoot”. A finalword from Lorraine: “Despite the rapidturnaround and the whole project being aslightly hairy one, it was great fun to work withSarah and to get a feel for how she works withthe TV production teams. Rise Hall is awonderful project – it was a privilege to beinvolved.”

Among its full range of renewable heatingsystems at this year’s Ecobuild exhibitionSmith’s Environmental Systems (SES)showcased its air-to-water heat pump andwater-to-water heat pump systems that includephotovoltaic and thermal (PV-Therm) hybridpanels. Smith’s claims that its water-to-waterheat pump system with PV-Therm panels which

generatebothelectricityanddomestichot waterfor heating,is the mostefficientsystem ofits kind inthe UK.

The systemspecialist,haspartnered

with German renewables specialistSolarzentrum to introduce the PV-Therm panelsto the UK, combining photovoltaic (PV)technology (which converts sunlight intoelectricity) and solar thermal technology(which takes heat from the sun to heat atransfer fluid.)

Working with the company’s recently launchedEcolectric water-to-water heat pump unit, SES

believes that the PV-Therm-based system couldrepresent a step change for sustainabledomestic heating and hot water. The heatpump has been specially designed so thatthere is minimal vibration and virtually nonoise.

Eco Slimstream down projection fanconvectors connect to the heat pump as analternative to traditional radiators. Each EcoSlimstream unit has a number of benefits, including:! carries 5% of the water required by a radiator

of the same output ! quick action room thermostat for better

control ! low surface temperature ! no heat loss-all heat is projected into the room! draws ambient air from the middle of the

room thus eliminating drafts at floor level ! lighter and smaller than a traditional panel

radiator ! specially designed to reduce the amount of

wall space required ! easy installation

There has been much discussion on the subjectof cavity wall dimensions required to meet theincreasingly stringent Building Regulations’requirements. Aircrete, with its inherentthermal insulation characteristics, contributesto a cavity wall width for masonry that willcompare favourably with timber framestructures.

As ever, the point under discussion is rathermore complicated that it appears at first. To cutto the chase, H+H is keen to point out that acavity wall constructed using H+H aircrete andmeasuring a total width of 324mm will providea solution to meet Code 4 of the Code forSustainable Homes.

This is achieved with a wall consisting of102mm brick / 100mm fully filled cavity withCavity Therm CT / 100mm Standard JumboBlock / plasterboard on dabs.

This compares well with a timber framestructure, where the wall width is likely to besimilar or slightly bigger when building to thesame levels of the Code and deployingidentical renewable energy solutions.

Clearly this is an important factor in the choiceof material for building external walls, although

others such as cost, ease of build and durabilitywill also have an impact.

H+H is keen to promote solutions that focus onmaximising the efficiency of the fabric of thebuilding structure before starting to userenewables to contribute to Code values. This isdemonstrated further by the company’sinvolvement in AIMC4 a project to buildprototype houses that meet the requirementsof Code Level 4 of the Code for SustainableHomes using a fabric first approach.

H+H aircrete has also been used in a number ofexperimental house constructions built toCode level 6 and U values for walls built usingaircrete have so far been as low as 0.09Wm2K.

Forticrete’s innovative Gemini roof tile has beenspecified by Redrow Homes South Wales as thetiling solution on its new ‘Heritage Collection’range of homes.

First introduced in 2008, the ‘HeritageCollection’ is a series of 34 different homes, available in brick and render, which have beeninspired by the arts and crafts movement of the1920s and 1930s.

Steve Ingham(Redrow HomesSouth Wales)commented:“Forticrete was oneof two roof tilecompanies specifiedfor the project, butit soon becameevident that theywere by far the mostpro-active,particularly when itcame down tostock, productrange, colour rangeand customerservice. For us,

Forticrete was the only choice. The Gemini tileenables us to achieve an aesthetically pleasingtraditional finish, while reducing our carbonfootprint – a great combination.”

Now used across all Redrow Homes SouthWales ‘Heritage Collection’ sites, Forticrete’sGemini interlocking plain tiles have beenspecifically designed to replicate the look andfeel of traditional plain tiles. They have 40% less

CO2 emissions per m2 roof and improvedcoverage, using less tiles per m2 making it amuch more cost effective solution.

As well as being extremely energy efficient, these next generation roofs tiles areaesthetically pleasing, easy-to-install and highin quality. They have been specifically designedas interlocking tiles which are just 270mm x337mm overall, yet because of a carefullyjudged central groove and innovative ‘doublecambered’ design, they have the appearance oftwo traditional plain tiles side by side whenlaid, effectively laying two tiles at a time.

They feature increased tile strength and aneven stronger, tighter interlock as standard andbecause they are easy to install, the cost to laythem is also significantly reduced.

Guiding specifiers through Part Land Section 6With the revisions to Part L of the BuildingRegulations and Section 6 of Scotland’sBuilding Standards now firmly in place, KnaufInsulation has launched a series of guides tohelp specifiers make sense of the changes.Providing in depth yet practical advice, theguides cover Part L1A – new dwellingsand Part L1B – existing dwellingsand Section 6 of the Scottishlegislation.

The changes in thelegislation aim to reduce CO2emissions across-the-board byan additional 25 per cent and 30per cent in Scotland compared tocurrent standards. The newregulations impose stringent thermalrequirements and, for new buildings, compliance can only be shown after carryingout whole building energy performancecalculations in accordance with the SAP 2009methodology.

To aid specification, Knauf Insulation’s guidesprovide solutions for a wide variety of buildingelements, with detailed constructions and U-values calculated in accordance with relevant

standards to allow specifiers to make sensiblechoices in order to meet the requirements. They also give details of a wide range ofthermal insulation products, as KnaufInsulation is the only manufacturer to supply

Five Stars forsafety

Knauf Drywall has had its industry-leadingperformance in Health & Safety recognised witha Five Star Audit award, the highest possible, from the British Safety Council (BSC).

The achievement – for its Immingham andSittingbourne sites – is not an inward-facingexercise: it hugely benefits customers in terms ofimproved product quality, enhanced orderaccuracy and much better service. This isbecause the appraisal process doesn’t take placein isolation – it is part of an integratedmanagement approach to safety, environmentalpractice and quality.

The BSC’s Five Star Audit is the internationallyrecognized benchmark of best practice thatgoes well beyond legal compliance and is usedby leading organizations globally. Knauf’sachievement shows the company’s dedicationto meeting the highest standards of qualitythroughout the organisation. Indeed, theprogramme has been so effective in the UK thatit is being applied globally – with a view to thedevelopment of a single international KnaufStandard.

As part of its culture of continuousimprovement, Knauf Drywall spent two yearsworking towards the audit by first shadowingthe BSC method. This structured approachculminated in a stunning audit performance, thecompany racking up a superb mark of 93.6%. Itchose BSC as auditor because externalverification was essential and BSC’s charitable,not-for-profit, status ensures its independenceand underpins its reputation as a leader in thesafety field.

The BSC examined every aspect of Knauf Drywall’soccupational health and safety performance, inspecting its factories in Immingham andSittingbourne and reviewing the training, monitoring and activity of all staff. Its audit notonly identifies areas of strength and weakness, butalso supports a structured programme ofcontinuous improvement for the future.

The company will also seek to be re-auditedevery two years – even though there is no‘renewal’ obligation – in order to maintain theintegrity and credibility of the award.
