SELDOM THOUGHT OF, SELDOM THANKED stThe 21 century consists of people

with no time. They don't have the time to sit down and relax, so when will they get the time to thank others.

We don't realize the importance of

some people in our lives. They are

extremely essential in our day to

day lives, but they are never

recognized.

Take a security guard, for example. Why do you think we're able to sleep

soundly at night? To feel safe? It's because we know that there is a person

there that will prevent thieves from coming in. We know about this, but we

just don't think of thanking him, that poor, old man who keeps us safe at

night.

A milkman gets us milk everyday. When he doesn't come, we have to go and

get the milk ourselves, which we obviously don't have time for. Do we thank

him? Have you ever seen the expression of a bus driver when you thank him

while getting down? He wears one of joy, of contentment that at least

someone has appreciated him for his hardwork.

When someone close to you gets admitted in the hospital at the right time,

you thank God. You thank the doctors. Has anyone ever thought that if it

hadn't been for the ambulance driver who got that someone to the hospital,

what would've happened? These people are hard workers, essential workers,

who are very important for life to go on.

Life would stop, if they stopped working. Lives would be lost if they weren't

there. They are unseen, unrecognized heroes who help with the little things

of life. They are that important to us… then why, I wonder, are they SELDOM

THE WRONG VICTIM Dean looked at the small, thin boy and smiled. I knew what he was thinking.

I wished that I had the courage to stop him, but I didn't. His friendship was

the only thing that kept me safe in high school. I am small, weak and

nervous. I might as well have a red target painted on my face for all the

bullies like Dean Woods. I got lucky. Dean was looking for a new recruit. He

wanted a sidekick and I signed up. So there I was, standing on a lonely

street, looking at the sad boy suffer the fate that I had escaped.

I could not understand how the boy managed to stay calm. He stared

defiantly into Dean's eyes and asked, “May I help you?” Dean chuckled and

said, “I don't think I am the one who needs help”. The boy nervously looked

around. Finally, he understood. Run, I thought. Run away. If only he could

read my mind! He just stood there and said, “Then why are you stopping me

like this?” “You are new here, aren't you?” asked Dean. The boy did not reply.

He just stared at him. He did not lower his gaze, nor did he back off when

Dean took a step forward. “You are one brave chap. Don't you think so too?”

asked Dean, addressing the latter sentence to me. “Yes”, I replied meekly.

The boy glanced at me and then looking back at Dean, he said, “Well, I am

not the coward here. Cornering me when no one is around” – The boy could

not finish his sentence. Dean punched him hard. Before he could recover

from the shock, he took him by the collar, lifted him and pushed him against

a brick wall. The boy gasped. His small frame was no match for the Dean's

strong arms. “What did you say?”, asked Dean, stressing on every word. The

terrified boy stammered, “Nothing. I did not me-mean it. I didn't say

anything”. Dean left him and he fell down on the ground with a thud. The

boy made no efforts to get up. He curled up like a cat and started sobbing.

Dean chuckled again. He looked at me and said, “Isn't this fun? Aww…. Look

at him. Little baby boy is crying!” Dean paused. I did not reply. Luckily he did

not seem to notice my terror. He started speaking again, but this time, it was

addressed to the boy. “You are one lucky kid. I have to go home now since

I have a guest.” Returning his gaze to me, he said, “I forgot to tell you. My

cousin is coming home. It has been years since I last saw him. I don't even

remember how he looks!”. Finally mustering up his courage, the boy looked

at Dean and said, “Well, if you must know, right now he looks as though

someone punched him and pushed him against a wall.” Navyasree BX

INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY

EXCLUSIVELY PENNED FOR HONOURABLE CHAIRMAN SIR

“Yoga is the practice of quieting the mind.” Patanjali.INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY was observed at

New Horizon College of Education on 21st June,

2016. It was our Honourable Prime Minister,

Sri. Narendra Modi, who initiated, pioneered,

emphasized and advocated the observation of

International Yoga Day, which is celebrated

worldwide on 21st June, 2016. It took incessant

attempts to convince the heads of 177 nations

about the benefits of Yoga and make the world

adopt this great aim of India in keeping every

individual physically fit, mentally healthy,

spiritually awakened and to say no to ailments.

Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient

tradition. It goes back to time immemorial. It

symbolises the unity of mind and body; thought

and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony

between man and nature; and a holistic approach

to health and well-being.

New Horizon College of Education has a Yoga

Club, which encourages all the student teachers

to learn and practice yoga every Saturday in the

college campus. A lot of emphasis is laid on the

different types of pranayama. The various asanas

were practiced like Uttanasana, Tadasana, and

Vrikshasana which help in increasing

concentration. The other asanas such as

Vajrasana, Pawanmukthasana, Bhujangasana,

Dhanurasana, Marjiriasana, Paschimottanaasana,

and Ustrasana help in relieving stress and

maintaining fitness and good health.

On the occasion of International Yoga Day, our

Principal and all the teachers were present to

support the student teachers in performing and

practising yoga. The teachers were also

enlightened about the benefits of yoga and

everyone pledged to learn and practice yoga.

AND THAT IS WHY I HATE BUS JOURNEYS

It was that time of the year again,

when we had to visit our extended

family in a remote village in

Tamil Nadu. We usually take a flight to

Chennai and drive to Ramapattinam.

The flight was delayed by two hours

and we reached Chennai at six o'clock.

The car was not waiting for us at the

airport. It was very hot and I was

sweating a lot. My mother was

screaming into the phone. We could

not get another car for the next five

hours. We had no other choice but to

travel by bus. I never travel by bus.

The mere sight of a bus terrifies me. I

suffer from motion sickness and

obsessive compulsive disorder. I

cannot stand dirty places.

I threw a big tantrum, but in the end,

my mother won. I reluctantly entered

the blue colour bus which looked like

it would break down any minute. The

first thing I noticed was the smell. The

whole bus smelled of sweat and fish.

Ramapattinam earned its living by

exporting fish. Hence, the bus reeked

of fish. I wanted a seat in the front, as

it helped my motion sickness, but there

was someone already sitting there. I

was not going to sit at the back, so

my mother had to politely request the

lady sitting there to move. There was

How ironic! They spent the rest

of the journey talking to themselves

and only spoke to me to relate some

incident which they thought was

cute. I wanted to jump out of the

moving bus when the baby sitting

next to me started crying. I wanted

to go back and sit next to my

mother, but someone was already

sitting there. I had already used that

newspaper to clean my hair. There

was no way I would sit there without

protection. The ride was never

ending, and now that I was awake I

could feel every little jolt. When I

thought I could bear this no longer,

we reached our destination. I got up

with renewed enthusiasm and

climbed down the stairs. 'Splash' I

had steeped right into sludge. I

sighed. This was the worst bus ride

ever.

Sanjana Vasanth

X

I tried to sleep through the journey.

I forgot that the windows of the bus

had no grills. As I leaned against the

frame of the bus, my hair was

outside the window. When I woke

up, I was shaking. My mother shook

me awake! I was about to give her a

piece of my mind, when I felt

something wet on my hair. I was too

scared to even ask what it was. I

threw a fit when I realized that it

was pigeon excreta. The bus driver

waited as I washed it out of my hair.

The newspaper crackled under my

weight. It was uncomfortable but it

was much better than sitting on that

green thing. A boy came and sat in

front of me. Immediately, the bus

smelled of mud and dirt. He had

much on his nails and fingers. I

gagged reflexively. My mother

whacked my hand and told me to

keep quiet. I ignored her as I

plugged the earphones into my ears.

It seemed that all the forces of

nature were conspiring against me

on that day. The men sitting at the

back started singing their folk songs.

Normally, I would have enjoyed this

around a bonfire with hot chocolate,

but under these circumstances, it

was just irritating. I tried to drown

out the noise by increasing the

volume on my phone. The idea failed

miserably. It sounded like a

cacophony of horrible sounds.

We were only five miles away from

Ramapattinam. I was seriously

considering walking till there, until I

spotted a familiar face chatting with

my mother.

something green on the seat. I almost

gagged. My mother asked the bus

driver to wait as I purchased a

newspaper from the nearest shop.

It was Ram, my best friend in the

village. I promptly pulled him away

and began talking to him, until he

introduced me to his 'best friend' Sita

of an individual can be achieved by changing our lifestyle

FOUNDER'S DAY 2016

The Chairman, Dr. Mohan Manghnani and the Executive Director, Ms. Renuka Manghnani were received

by the students and staff. The Principal, Dr. S. Edwin Christopher addressed the gathering and

welcomed the dignitarie s to light the lamp.

The opening performance invoked the blessings of Lord Ganesha. The next performance was a

peppy Bollywood number. The highlight of the event was the powerful 'Shiv Tandav', which left the

audience enthralled. The next dance was based on the latest Tamil songs.

Mr. Ravish Hegde, faculty of Sanskrit Department bowled over the audience with his distinctive

Yakshagana performance. This was followed by an energetic Hip-Hop performance. A magnificent

grand finale was put up by PUC and Degree students.

The show concluded on a happy note, with a vote of thanks given by the host. The students departed with many memories, looking forward to the first long weekend of the year.

Founder's Day was celebrated with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm at the premises of New Horizon thCollege Kasturinagar, on the 7 of July, 2016. A pleasant evening welcomed the gathering and the

weather complimented the occasion. Beautiful flowers adorned the stage. A festive mood prevailed

throughout the College.

I was travelling on flight no AI- 606 flying from Bangalore to London. I was

eager to reach London for the Smurfs 2 International Meet for which I was

the lucky one from India. I was sitting in the middle row. I noticed in front of

me, a group of men wearing black suits and black shades, holding a sheet of

paper which contained their tour plan. I wanted to know what it was.

I strained my eyes and saw something which left me terror stricken. They

had written on the sheet of paper, how they were going hijack the flight. If I

shouted, surely all of us would have to face death. I decided to play smart. I

noticed one of them, going towards the cockpit and with ease breaking its

lock and enter. An hour went by and he did not return. I now understood

that this hijacker had directed the pilot to divert the flight. I could see in our

route map that we were not going in the right direction and our flight was

now destined to somewhere else, maybe Syria. I was frightened at the

thought that these men may be a part of the ISIS.

I went to the aircraft engineer who was sitting right in the first seat and

explained the situation to him. Another thought which struck my mind was

that till now only one of the hijackers had made a move. I wondered why

the others were so slow to react. Then a brilliant idea struck the aircraft

engineer's mind. He said that before the rest of them would take out their

arms and begin their plan, he would poison their drink. So he gave necessary

directions to the air hostess to mix poison in their beer. She did as she was

instructed.

Slowly a few of the passengers observed that one by one those men were

feeling sick and green lather was coming from their mouth. They were gone

for good. Now the only thing that remained was how to get that hijacker out

of the cockpit. Suddenly all the people on board heard an announcement

made by the hijacker. He said that the aircraft was under his control. He

asked everyone to remain quietly in their seats as there were other hijackers

too who would shoot down anyone who reacted. The passengers did so.

The engineer contacted the co-pilot and told him that we had got rid of the

other hijackers. The co-pilot, a brave man, kicked the hijacker on his hand,

took the gun from him and rescued the pilot. We were finally free from the

hijackers and the flight made an emergency landing at Riyadh.Mehul SrivastavaX

not step out of your house after seven.

Basically, all stereotypes are directed towards the female race. A girl child

equals Goddess Laxmi (as mentioned in Indian household) but these are just

meaningless words used to cheer the family who hoped for a boy – the

continuer of the family name. For many people, pride is more important than

saving a life. First, we won't let the pretty baby see the world and then if

somehow she weasels her way to the world, our patriarch society stands as

one to pull down the girl child.

I salute those who let a girl find her own path because they are the ones

who know that it's their turn to rule the world and fill it with love.

Why are we shown as the inferior race?

Why are we never given opportunities to showcase our talents?

Why are we incomplete without our fathers, brothers or husbands?

The answer to these questions is something which every girl desires.

So, our widely loved patriarchal society, please let your guard down and let

the girl child be. Deepthi X

Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong

enough.

Don't take rest after your first victory because if you fail in the second,

more lips are waiting to say that your first victory was just luck!
