Triple Bottom Line of McDonald’s: How Great Is It?
Preethi Umashanker and Katie Abbott
Triple Bottom LinesTriple Bottom Lines are a
reporting system that businesses use (not anymore) that gives a sense of how your business is doing in 3 ways: Environmentally• Is your company helping the
environment?• Is your company sustainable?
Economically• Can your company work sustainably
and make a profit? Socially• Are you affecting society in a good way?
Environmental Impact
-Not such a good impact-Cattle are fed corn
(naturally are grass eaters)
-Uses Styrofoam (Plastic 6: polystyrene) packaging
-Doesn’t recycle everything that can be recycled
Economic Impact• Made a profit past
3 years• 2009: 9% increase• Does McDonald’s
work sustainably?
Social Impact
• How does McDonald’s impact its consumers?
• Nutritional Value: Not Very High
• McDonald’s continues to sell unhealthy food and the people are paying the price
• American people are facing one of their biggest problems: OBESITY!!!
Environmental Solutions• Cattle should be fed
grass and should be allowed to graze
• Instead of Styrofoam (Plastic 6), there are bioplastics (derived from plant starches and oils) that biodegrade that can be used for packaging
• Many waste materials that aren’t being recycled can be recycled
Economical Solutions• Not very many solutions• McDonald’s is doing pretty
well in its profits and losses but if they tried harder to be more sustainable their budget might increase and it might be harder to make a profit
Social Solutions• Healthier Options:– Salads with oil and
vinegar based dressing– Grilled chicken (rather
than fried)– Whole wheat
buns/bread– Etc.
• Have Nutrition Facts present– People can know what
they are eating; if they knew, they might not want to eat it
