January Pastor’s Letter ‘CLOTHES’ FOR THE NEW YEAR
Time marches on we say and how well we know the truth of these words. ‘Twill soon be the beginning of another year; time to write 2017; hang up a new calendar; time to once again make resolutions, set goals, decide on improvements in our life and living—hoping that in the coming months we’ll do better in keeping all the promises we make to ourselves. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Colossians, speaks passionately about newness-the new life in Christ and does so with a familiar metaphor: CLOTHE YOURSELVES—PUT ON— good counsel about what to wear in the new year. Put on compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, patience and above all put on love which binds the whole wardrobe together. SHOW COMPASSION. says Paul, Compassion, the ability to feel what another is experiencing; that non-threatening entrance into another’s space, to sit with them, talk with them, pray with them, let them know we care for and about them. PRACTICE KINDNESS. Kindness flows from compassion and says to others that they are important to us. Kindness generates care and concern that speaks to their specific needs and helps them resolve their particular and unique situations. To show compassion and practice kindness comes when we practice lowliness and meekness. Lowliness is that gracious ability to help recognize and celebrate their worth. It is the ability to put our neighbor’s needs ahead of our own. All of this, of course, calls for PATIENCE. Patience, like endurance comes only with experience. Much like the runner—if they consistently run an extra half mile each week, soon additional miles will come naturally. So too with patience, the more we practice, the greater patience we’ll have. Finally, tying all this together will be prayer; that in our words and deeds all we do be done in Christ’s name with thanks to God. Gracious God, we greet each day of the new year with gratitude for Christ’s promise of life everlasting. Help us to enter this new year resolved to lead a more committed and disciplined life so that we be strengthened to more faithfully follow the Christ in whose name we pray. Amen. Pastor Don Salberg

Messiah New Hope and Grace Lutheran are getting together for our next Almost Overnight.
Due to bad weather, we had to cancel our Christmas Movie Night in December, but we’re
excited to make it up in January!
As Messiah New Hope partners with Grace Lutheran for Day Camp, it’s fun to have friend-ships that can exist for more than just one week in the summer.
We will be going to Grace in January, and they will be coming to MNH in
February or March.

Check out the write up we received on the VOA South Dakota web site. https://www.voa-dakotas.org/news-events/news/bread-break-prevents-food-waste We are still delivering to the Veterans Assistance Center focusing on food the homeless veterans can take with them. Thanks to Adam Hanisch, Doug Dreke and Charlie McIntyre for covering for Mike while he recovered from cataract surgery. Our November food harvest picked up and distributed by Bread Break was 18,195 pounds which is valued at $32,387. We are still on target to hit 200,000 pounds this year which will bring our total dollar valuation for the past 5 years to one million dollars! We always need people to alternate with and substitute for our volunteers. To add your hands to this effort, please contact Mike Bauman @ (605-496-9358) or email: [email protected].
Thank you to everyone who assisted with the preparation and who helped served the Holiday Meal We had over 140 guests for the meal and it received rave reviews! Thank you to Carol Dreke for obtaining the Thrivent Action Grant which funded the necessary food items.

JANUARY FOUR KEYS
TRADITION: January is a time when we make New Years Resolutions. The challenge is to keep our plans for the month ahead. It is never to late to go back to those goals even if you forget before new habits are made. DEVOTIONS: This January we are starting a sermon series on the Ten Commandments. Each family was given a copy of the SMALL CATECHISM on Refor-mation Sunday in October. Find your copy and each week read what it says about that commandment. (There are still a few copies in the office if you didn't get one,) January 8 -1st Commandment on page 4 January15- 2nd Commandment on page 4 January 22- 3rd Commandment on page 5 January 29-4th Commandment on page 5 CARING CONVERSATIONS: How do you keep this commandment in daily life, SERVICE: Each week do something to carry out what has come from your caring conversation. The explanations are short and positive, and are helpful to your caring conversations and service for the cold month of January. Nancy Gage Milestone Ministry Coordinator January Milestones
