What does God expect of us?

• Hebrews 13:7,17 Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. 17 Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.

What does God expect of us?

• Romans 13:1-2 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

What does God expect of us?

• 1 Timothy 5:4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God.

1. He wants us to honor our parents and others in authority.

• Honor them = respect, obey and love them

in everything, for this pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged. 22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

2. He wants us to do it out of love for Jesus.

• God uses his representatives to bless us!

3. We obey God first if our parents tell us to disobey God's Word.

What blessings does God promise to those who honor their parents?

• Proverbs 30:11,17 There are those who curse their fathers and do not bless their mothers… 17 The eye that mocks a father, that scorns obedience to a mother, will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley, will be eaten by the vultures.

• Ephesians 6:3 …“that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

The Fifth Commandment

• Genesis 9:6 Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man.

• Romans 13:4 For [the government] is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

1. Only God can give / take away life!

• Also gives the government that right War Capital punishment

• Isaiah 55:6 Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near.

1. Life is our "time of grace"

• Our time to come to faith in Jesus!

3. That we do not TAKE any life

• Murder

• Suicide

• Abortion

• Euthanasia

4. That we do not HARM any life

• Overeating / poor eating habits

• Alcohol / Drug abuse

• Smoking

• Too much stress!

• 1 John 3:15 Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him.

What does God expect of us?

• Romans 12:19 Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.

5. That we do not HATE anyone

• Jealousy

• revenge

• Ephesians 4:32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

What does God expect of us?

• 1 John 3:16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.

6. That we help others and be a friend to them no matter what!
