WHAT standards is this aligned to?
WHY are there two file options?
This product is most closely aligned to the Common Core standards. However, everything is referenced as “learning targets” so that it is applicable within any 1st grade classroom. The learning targets in this product are:
• ASK AND ANSWER QUESTIONS (Common Core Standard RI.1.1)• MAIN TOPIC AND KEY DETAILS (Common Core Standard RI.1.2)• CONNECTIONS (Common Core Standard RI.1.3)• WORD MEANINGS (Common Core Standard RI.1.4)• TEXT FEATURES (Common Core Standard RI.1.5)• UNDERSTANDING IMAGES (Common Core Standard RI.1.6)• KEY IDEAS (Common Core Standard RI.1.7)• AUTHOR’S REASONS (Common Core Standard RI.1.8)• COMPARE AND CONTRAST (Common Core Standard RI.1.9)
There are two options in this download. You can choose to either use a version that makes references to Common Core or a version that does NOT make references to Common Core. The content is the same in both files, but this option gives Common Core schools a specific reference to the corresponding standard, which may be helpful.

Why do cacti have spikes? There are two reasons. The first reason is the spikes protect them from animals. Some animals eat the cactus for food. The spikes can scare animals away from eating it. The second reason for the spikes is they lead rain water down the cactus. This helps the roots get water. Cacti live in the desert where there is not much water.
Cacti have waxy skin. This keeps water inside. Other plants do not have this skin. Those plants lose water. Every drop counts in the desert!
Another way they survive is by their special roots. Their roots do not reach deep into the ground. They are just below the surface, or top of the ground. This helps them get water as soon as it gets to the soil.
A cactus was made to survive dry weather!
Short spikes help lead water down the cactus.
Long spikes protect the cactus from animals.
