New Fairfield Senior Center Newsletter
Volume 15
Issue 4 July/August 2015
The New Sun Times
From the Desk of Director Kathy Hull:
Summer’s here and we’re featuring multiple activities both indoors and outdoors. As you look through
our newsletter, note the outdoor opportunities for kayaking, walking, gardening, and more. Tour the
lakeside as an Environment Corps volunteers doing water testing for the Candlewood lake Authority.
Or perhaps you’d like to get out of the heat for some exercise, a class, entertainment, a paint party, or a
movie. It’s all available through your Senior Center. So, whether coming or going, leave your worries at
the doorstep and join your Senior Center friends this summer.
For more information on any of these programs, call the desk at 203 312-5665 or check out our website

Congratulations to
Dominick Tomanelli—Drawing instructor
The Senior Center is fortunate to have Dominick Tomanelli as an instructor. A gifted illustrator in his career, Dominick also taught for New Fairfield’s Adult Edu-cation program for many years, for Founders Hall in Ridgefield, and for many young homeschooled children. He lives by the rule that anyone can draw if they put their mind to it. Dominick has won many awards including the Union Savings Bank Award, the
Koening Frame Award, 5 First Place honors, and more. We want to congratulate
him on his most recent award at this spring’s Richter Art Show, a Certificate of
Merit for the work shown in this photo.
Dominick’s Drawing Class meets Thursday mornings at 10:00 am and, current-
ly, there are openings.
July Movies:

Dolores plants the
Senior Center’s raised bed at
the NEW Community Garden
New Fairfield’s Community Garden
Thanks to Gary Mummert, Brittany Bresha, and Steve Simpson, the idea of an Organic Community Garden in New Fairfield survived the journey on its way from reaching out for support to locating the appropriate available piece of prop-erty, going through the required board and commission meetings and approvals, and tracking down funding sources. Once that was done there needed to be the actual clearing of the property and building of the beds and fences. Thankfully many others believed in the concept which led to much donated labor and materi-als.
The initial dream is now a reality with 12 beds, an animal control fence, and a wa-ter source. The members of Boy Scout Troop 137 were outstanding in the work that they did to build the beds including a raised bed that has been devoted to the Senior Center. There is also a bed dedicated to Social Services and one to demonstrate the tenets of organic gardening. The remaining beds have been rented by families also loyal to the concept. If you’d like to make an application for a space in the garden for 2016, let us know. We can provide you with an Appli-cation of Intent. These applications could lead to an expansion of the garden, a collective environment where ideas on organic/sustainable living and food production can be easily shared and observed. Stop in or call 203 312-5665 for an Application of Intent.
