ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Exchange 2010-2013 ESRP performance report Silverton Consulting, Inc. StorInt™ Briefing This Storage Intelligence (StorInt™) dispatch covers Microsoft Exchange 2010 (E2010) and Exchange 2013 (E2013) Solution Review Program (ESRP) results. 1 Since we last reviewed this 1000 mailbox and under category nine months ago, there has only been one new entry, the HP MSA 1040. The HP MSA 1040 storage performed well enough to rank in the top ten for a number of our ESRP performance metrics and we present a few of them below. Latest ESRP V3.0 & 4.0 (E2010&E2013) performance In Figure 1 we show an SCI derived, top ten normalized database transfers per second. Figure 1 SCI’s top ten ESRP normalized database transfers per second As can be seen in Figure 1, the new HP MSA 1040 came in at 5 th place with a total of 625 database transfers per second per 1000 mailboxes, behind the 2 HP MSA 2040s, HP P2000 G3 and an Infortrend EonStor DS 3016R which hit 1025 total database transfers 1 ESRP results from https://technet.microsoft.com/enus/office/dn756396.aspx as of 28Jul2015

Exchange 2010-2013 ESRP performance report Silverton  Consulting,  Inc.  StorInt™  Briefing  This  Storage  Intelligence  (StorInt™)  dispatch  covers  Microsoft  Exchange  2010  (E2010)  and  Exchange  2013  (E2013)  Solution  Review  Program  (ESRP)  results.1    Since  we  last  reviewed  this  1000  mailbox  and  under  category  nine  months  ago,  there  has  only  been  one  new  entry,  the  HP  MSA  1040.

As  can  be  seen  in  Figure  1,  the  new  HP  MSA  1040  came  in  at  5th  place  with  a  total  of  625  database  transfers  per  second  per  1000  mailboxes,  behind  the  2  HP  MSA  2040s,  HP  P2000  G3  and  an  Infortrend  EonStor  DS  3016R  which  hit  1025  total  database  transfers                                                                                                                  1  ESRP  results  from  https://technet.microsoft.com/en-‐us/office/dn756396.aspx  as  of  28Jul2015

per  second  per  1000  mailboxes.  The  HP  MSA  1040  used  dual-‐port,  10GbE  iSCSI  host  interfaces  to  each  controller  and  had  a  total  of  12  4TB  7200RPM  SAS2  connected  disk  drives  for  physical  storage.      We  prefer  the  normalized  database  transfers  per  second  (using  1000  mailboxes)  metric  over  the  ESRP  reported  (absolute)  database  transfers  per  second  because  it’s  less  susceptible  to  variability  based  on  mailbox  counts.  This  is  much  more  of  a  problem  for  the  over  1000  mailbox  categories.  But  as  can  be  seen  in  Figure  1,  the  top  four  solutions  supported  only  800  mailboxes.  For  example,  in  absolute  database  transfers  the  Infortrend  system  mentioned  above  only  achieved  828  (absolute)  database  transfers  per  second  but  performed  significantly  better  on  a  normalized  basis.    In  Figure  2  we  show  a  SCI  derived  metric,  top  ten  ESRP  total  database  backup  throughput.

Figure  2  SCI’s  top  ten  ESRP  total  database  backup  throughput

Once  again  the  new  HP  MSA  1040  came  in  5th  place  with  620  MB/sec  of  total  database  backup  throughput.  ESRP  reports  two  database  backup  metrics:  throughput  in  MB  per  second  per  database  and  throughput  in  MB  per  second  per  server.  However,  both  are  more  of  a  server  side  performance  metric  and  neither  show  a  storage  system  view,  which  is  why  we  prefer  total  database  backup  throughput  in  Figure  2.

In  Figure  3  we  show  another  SCI  derived  metric  total  database  transfers  per  second  per  disk  drive.

Figure  3  SCI’s  top  ten  database  transfers  per  second  per  disk  drive.

Again,  the  HP  MSA  1040  showed  up  in  5th  place  with  52  database  transfers  per  disk  drive.  The  top  solution  here  the  Infortrend  EonStor  DS  3016R  had  96  database  transfers  per  disk  drive.  Normalization  by  mailbox  counts  doesn’t  make  as  much  sense  here  since  database  transfers  per  second  per  spindle  is  already  normalizing  transfers  by  disk  drive  counts.      The  chart  in  Figure  3  mixes  all  speeds  of  disk,  i.e.,  15K  RPM  with  7.2K  RPM  disk  drives.  But  the  15K  RPM  drive  submissions  in  our  top  ten  showed  up  in  the  last  four  slots,  ranking  seventh  to  tenth.  Apparently,  there’s  more  to  ESRP  database  transfers  than  pure  disk  speeds.

Summary  There  hasn’t  been  as  much  new  activity  in  this  1000  mailbox  and  under  category  as  we  would  like  to  see.  Unclear  whether  this  is  due  to  the  high  use  of  DAS  for  Exchange  storage  in  SMB  customers  or  some  other  reason.  But,  there  are  still  a  large  number  of  vendors  offering  SMB  storage  systems  and  ESRP  remains  one  of  the  best  ways  to  assess  there  overall  IO  performance.    If  you  are  interested  in  even  more  information  on  block  storage  performance  please  checkout  our  SAN  Storage  Buying  Guide  available  for  purchase  on  our  website,  which  includes  ChampionCharts™  for  OLTP,  Throughput  and  Email  workloads  across  enterprise,  mid-‐range  and  SMB  storage  systems.  Use  the  QR  code  below  left  for  more  information  on  the  SAN  Storage  Buying  Guide.  We  also  provide  some  additional  ESRP  results  analysis  in  our  recently  updated,  SAN-‐NAS  Buying  Guide,  also  available  on  our  website.    Constructive  comments  on  how  to  improve  our  analyses  for  any  of  our  performance  reports  are  always  welcome.  Moreover,  if  you  detect  errors  in  this  or  any  of  our  other  performance  reports,  please  do  let  us  know  and  we  will  correct  it  as  soon  as  possible.      If  you  received  this  report  from  someone  else,  please  consider  signing  up  for  your  own  free  copy  of  SCI’s  StorInt™  monthly  newsletter  using  the  QR  code  below  right.  We  provide  commentary  on  recent  major  storage  system  announcements  as  well  as  analyze  current  storage  system  performance  results/benchmarks  like  this  each  month.  We  plan  to  analyze  Microsoft  ESRP  results  again  in  three  months.
