The 16-night King Tut’s New Year’s Revolution festival kicked off last night, with gigs featuring some of the coun- try’s most exciting emerging acts. I’m particularly keen to see Patersani, who headline on Tuesday January 19. Formed by brothers Craig and Dave Paterson, I first came across them at a charity event I was hosting at Loch Lomond in the summer. They’ve now been in the studio with producer Bruce Rintoul (Twin Atlantic, Father- son), and recently put out their stunning debut single Lost And Found. Originally performing as solo artists around Glasgow, the brothers came together to form Patersani in 2014, ini- tially as an acoustic duo. Dave said: “Both of us grew up playing in garage bands listening to Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Kings Of Leon, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, so it was always our intention to play as a full band. “Since Danny joined the music has definitely been a lot faster paced. Once Colin joined it opened up the option for Craig to not play guitar as much which in itself impacted the sound with a transition more towards the style of bands like Catfish And The Bottlemen and Eliza And The Bear.” The infectious pop rock of Lost And Found is a perfect introduction to the band. Craig said: “Lost And Found was one of those moments where, as soon as we finished it, we knew we had something pretty special. “A lot of songs we work on will take weeks or months but Lost And Found all fell into place in one three-hour prac- tice and hasn’t changed since. The first time we played it live we had people coming over to us after the show tell- ing how much they liked it.” A follow-up single Ofelia has been recorded, and should be out soon. Patersani appear on the new Live At Five TV show on STV Glas- gow and STV Edinburgh next Friday. For their New Year’s Revolution gig on the 19th, they’ll be joined by The Blood And Gold, The Dead Settlers and The Northern. The Voice winner’s debut album Big World comes out today and he has denied reports that he is hankering for a return to the fire sta- tion. Stevie, 30, said: “I never said I was going back. If I had to, there are worst jobs to do. “But I don’t want people get- ting mistaken about my passion for this. I don’t want people to assume I’m thinking of going back. I really want to give this a go. “I’d be heartbroken if I had to go back to my job. It would be heartbreaking to be so close, it’s on the tip of my fingers and ready for the taking.” It’s been almost a year since Stevie romped to victory in the BBC show. He was urged to batter out an album early doors, but he shot that down. Stevie explained: “When I first came off the show, the plan was to get an album out as quick as possible and ride off the momentum. I probably could have done that and got a guar- anteed top 10 but I realised this was an opportunity I might not get again so I wanted to give it my best show with music I’ve written. “I’ve been a songwriter for a long time. It shows people, you maybe thought you had an idea about me — but that’s not what I’m about.” Stevie knows people will queue up to slate him if Big World doesn’t do good numbers and is determined not to follow the other series winners who have disappeared without trace. Stevie said: “I won’t be crying if it’s not number one, that would be a discredit to every- body who bought it. Ultimately I’d love it, if it went top 10. “It’s important whether I like it or not people are going to say stuff if it doesn’t go top 10. “But it’d be quite a credible achievement for a self-written album. And the 16-year-old has scored spectacularly with it. His song Bra- zil highlights the multi-million pound stadiums that were built as millions of Brazilians lived in pov- erty. Declan explained: “It was so prominent at the time with the World Cup and it was all everyone was talking about.” The follow-up track Paracetamol is a bit maverick too. It’s a full six minutes long. He said: “I don’t want to restrict things by keeping every song to three minutes or subject matters that I won’t include. I write what I want to write about and if people like it, that’s a bonus.” He’s got a packed diary. Along with doing schooling online, he’s planning to record his debut album.
