  • PILGRIM v. PURITAN

    What’s the Difference?

Pilgrims: People who made a “pilgrimage” to

the New World. They were the 1st to arrive in

    Massachusetts.

    Puritans: People who wanted to

    “purify” the Church of

    England. They arrived after the

    Pilgrims.

  • WHY DID THEY COME TO AMERICA?

The Pilgrims, and later the Puritans,

were both looking for a place to practice

    their religion without government

    control.

People who challenged the Church of

England were persecuted. By settling in

    Massachusetts, the Pilgrims and Puritans

each hoped to find religious freedom.

  • THE PILGRIMS The Pilgrims traveled

    aboard the Mayflower.

The Pilgrims were blown off course, and they landed in Massachusetts instead of the Hudson River.

They named the landing site Plymouth.

  • THE MAYFLOWER COMPACT

Because the Pilgrims landed in the wrong place, their charter did not apply.

The men signed an agreement in which they would obey laws for the good of the colony.

This established the idea of self-government and the concept of majority rule.

  • LIFE AT PLYMOUTH

Like at Jamestown, many colonists starved the first winter.

The Indians taught the Pilgrims how to farm and survive in the wilderness.

The Thanksgiving celebration of 1621 honors the friendship between the Indians and the Pilgrims.

Squanto is the most famous of the Indians who helped the Pilgrims as they struggled to survive.

  • THE PURITANS

During the Great Migration of the 1630s and 1640s, close to 20,000 Puritans left England for New England.

  • THE NEW ENGLAND WAY

John Winthrop was the Puritan governor of the colony.

He stated that the colony would be a community where people work together for the good of the whole colony.

Massachusetts would be a “city upon a hill” ----a model for the world.

  • The Puritan church was

    the dominant feature in

    any Puritan town.

    The Bible was the guide

    book for religious as well

    as political matters.

    There was no separation

    of church and state.

    THE NEW ENGLAND WAY

  • PROBLEMS WITHIN THE COLONY

    Not everyone agreed

    with the Puritan

    church’s complete

    control over the colony.

    Roger Williams and

    Anne Hutchinson were

    two Puritans who were

    expelled for challenging

    church leaders.

  • CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE PURITANS

Freedom of religion, separation of church and state, and the right to freely criticize the government all come from the good and bad experiences of the Massachusetts colonists.

  • The Puritans set up additional colonies such as Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Connecticut.

In Connecticut, the Puritans adopted the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut-----the first written constitution in America.

    CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE PURITANS

  • The Puritans

    established schools

    for their children

    and built some of

    the oldest

    universities in

    America such as

    Harvard.
