And when we hear them from a three year old learning to tie a shoe, or a fourteen year old finishing a school project, we are happy that they are learning, building self-confidence, and gaining a sense of independence. But when we as adults say “I can do it myself,” I think we should look a little deeper – why is it so important that we do it ourselves? Especially if “it” involves…making a difficult decision, handling a health issue, tackling a difficult project, resolving a family problem, and more. Whatever “it” is, we often take on the burden alone. The question is why? Is it because our pride says there’s only one way to do it – my way! Is it because we are afraid of looking weak if we ask for help? Is it because we feel we “should” be able to do it alone? Is it because we don’t want to be indebted to anyone? Whatever the reason, we sometimes waste time or spend needless energy or worry over troubling issues because we hesitate to ask others for help. And this is also true when it comes to God. So often we don't take advantage of Jesus' promise in the above scripture. "Ask, seek, knock." I’ve had people say to me, “I pray for others, but I really don’t want to pray for myself.” Now this might sound generous, which it is – praying for others is wonderful. And it might sound humble – “God has more important matters and people to attend to than me.” But I would argue that not praying for yourself implies that you don’t fully understand the kind of relationship that God wants to have with you. Because if you’re not willing to pray for yourself, it means…your life is perfect and you don’t need God, or more likely, you don’t believe or trust that God loves you enough to care about what’s happening in your daily life. Or, perhaps you don’t really want God’s intervention or guidance. You’d rather “do it yourself.” And yet, when we don’t come to God for help, we deny ourselves a greater wisdom, a greater power, his greater discernment that can help us through whatever issue we are facing. As the hymn, What a Friend We Have in Jesus says, “O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear. All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.” Yes, Jesus promised us that if we just “ask, seek and knock,” we will have everything we need to help us carry our burden, make our decisions, solve our problems. We have the assurance that we are not alone, but that God will be there with us and for us. And so consider what concerns you may be facing. Can you believe God loves you and wants to help you? Then ask and let it be given you, seek and you will find it, knock and let the door be opened to you! ~Pastor Rebecca

“The Wesleyan”

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For

everyone who asks receives, everyone who seeks finds, and to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.”

Matthew 7:7-8

“I can do it myself.” We’ve all heard these words before, haven’t we?

As the hymn, What a

Friend We Have in Jesus says, “O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear. All because

we do not carry everything to God in prayer.” Yes, Jesus promised us that if we just “ask, seek and knock,” we will have everything we need to help us carry our burden, make our decisions, solve our problems. We have the assurance that we are not alone, but that God will be there with us and for us.

And so consider what concerns you may be facing. Can you believe God loves you and wants to help you? Then ask and let it be given you, seek and you will find it, knock and let the door be opened to you!

Worship Announcement: Due to the Falmouth Road Race on August 20th, and because we allow the runners and public to park in our lot and yard, we will hold one worship service on Saturday, August 19th at 5:00pm. This will be a casual service and will follow the same outline as our 9:30am service.

Thank you very much to Marion and Jeff Warburton who faithfully take care of our plants in the chapel, which so enhances our 8:30 worship service! They water, clean, prune and spend a lot of time making sure the chapel is beautiful and calming. Please let them do all the maintenance and care for the plants and pond, but if you have questions or thoughts about any particular plants, feel free to talk to them! Thanks again, Marion and Jeff!!

Thank you to our wonderful Adult Choir, Bell Choir, & Children’s Choir for gracing us with such beautiful and inspirational music

this year. Enjoy your summer off, and we’ll see you on September 10th!

Worship on the Beach! John Wesley will be sponsoring a beach worship service at Surf Dr. Beach on Sundays from 7:30 – 8:00am, beginning July 2nd. This is open to everyone and we invite the public. It is a casual service with song, meditation and prayer. Pastor Rebecca will preach the same sermon at the 9:30 service. (There will be no 8:30 or 10:30 for the summer months.)

What a wonderful place to worship – in God’s open-air sanctuary, and what a great way to invite friends and neighbors to “church!” As we seek to find ways to reach out and share the good news of Christ, this beach service is a perfect opportunity to bring a chair, bring a friend and worship together! NOTE: No Beach Service on 7/16 or 8/20.

Laura will be out of the church office from July

21st thru July 25th and August 28th thru

September 1st. The church will need office coverage on those days. If you are available to help out, please let Laura know as soon as possible. Office hours are 9am—1pm. Computer skills are needed to create the Sunday Bulletin, and training is available. There are also opportunities to answer the phone and fold Bulletins that require no computer skills. If you can help out, call the office—508-548-3050.

Dorothy Linton Our Children & Youth Spotlight Honoree is 8 year-old Dorothy Linton! Dorothy moved here a few years ago from Miami with her parents, Brian & Jenn. Dorothy’s family has always been active in church, so it’s no surprise that Dorothy is equally active. Dorothy is a passionate young girl who loves God and others. You can see her enthusiasm and generosity in so many environments, such as in Sunday School, Worship Our Way (WoW), the Kid’s Choir, during the children’s sermon, Vacation Bible School (VBS), etc. She is welcoming to our new friends and follows instructions respectfully. She helps around the church by helping her parents with spiritual retreats/Bible studies, coffee hour, etc. We are thankful to have such a loving and caring young lady in our church. We have thoroughly enjoyed watching you grow and look forward to seeing all that God does through and in you!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Thank you Sunday School Teachers!

Please join me in thanking our very dedicated and passionate Sunday School teachers for another great school year! Amy Clatanoff-Brown, Lorretta Croft and Carrie Leonard have spent numerous hours preparing and teaching

Bible lessons for our children every Sunday morning from 9:30-10:20 am. They have demonstrated the love of Christ up-front and personal to our children. Even through challenging and emotional times, their poise and transparency has been rejuvenating and much-needed. They have remained true to the Christ-like values and character we teach and aspire to be like. Your compassion, dedication and enthusiasm are unprecedented. I speak for all of us in saying that

we are so grateful for your time and love. We hope you enjoy your much-deserved Summer Break!

Youth Group Meeting Changes

Starting in September, Youth Group (and most events) will be split into two different age categories: High School (9-12th grade) and Jr. High/Middle School (5-8th grade). Each group will meet twice a month (unless they are

holidays, vacations, etc.). There will still be events/projects that all Youth students (5th and up) do together. We hope this change will make our environments more relevant and engaging for all of our students.

Please speak with Allison if you have any questions.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Youth Group Summer Mission Trip (Wednesday, July 19th through Saturday, July 22nd) In a few more weeks the Youth Group will be going to Winthrop, Maine for a four-day, three-night Mission Trip! Students (5th graders and above) will be helping construct and deconstruct a teen crisis center in town as well as some other projects at UMC Camp Mechuwana. The cost is $50 which includes lodging, food, transportation, etc. Not only will our students get to learn how to selflessly serve a community, they will also get the full camping experience by sleeping in cabins, swimming and boating in a lake, camp fires, hiking and so much more. It is a great way for our Youth to get outside this summer and grow in the process. For more information, please contact the Youth Director, Allison Deyo at 508-548-3050 or [email protected]. Registration forms, packing list, itinerary, etc. is located on our website or on the Children & Youth Bulletin Board in the church’s Fellowship Hall. We hope all our Youth students will join us for this memorable and impactful trip. There will be a mandatory briefing/bonding

meeting on Friday, July 14th that students must attend.

PAST EVENTS:

Recap: Last Day of Youth Group On Sunday, June 11th, the Youth Group had their last regular-scheduled meeting before the summer break and they had an awesome time! Everyone went to the Leonard’s house where they explored the bogs, boated, fished, jumped on the trampoline, played basketball, fed ducks/chickens and so much more. Thank you so much to Carrie & Tim Leonard for opening up their home to everyone and making delicious food and s’mores

on the open fire…you are the BEST! To view more of the pictures from that day, visit

our Facebook page!

Recap: Flocking Flamingo Fundraiser

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in our Flamingo fundraiser during the month of June! Whether you paid to flock someone, or paid to insure yourself that you wouldn’t get flocked, or if you were one of the 30 houses to get flocked…you all contributed towards helping fund the Youth Group’s Summer Mission Trip! We have raised over $875 so far, thanks to your support, so thank you! Make sure you check out all of the Flamingo pictures on our Facebook page!

Recap: Focus on the Family We hope everyone enjoyed participating in our “Focus on the Family” daily challenges from Mother’s Day through Father’s Day this year! We hope these small but meaningful challenges drew you closer to God and to each other! Try to make it a habit to “check-in” with your family….see how each other’s doing and have fun with one another! Share your remarks/testimonial with Allison about how this challenge impacted your family.

Would you like to send a note or card to members of our church family when they are hospitalized, in a rehabilitation center or a nursing home? To help you, we will have the addresses on sticky labels for your use on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall. There will also be a current list of the names of church members presently in those locations. Just take an address label and send a note of encouragement and friendship. It's that easy! 2017 New England United Methodist Annual Conference

Each year the New England United Methodist Annual Conference meets to make appointments, do the business of the conference and to inspire those in attendance.

The business of the church took place rather quickly, as there was little discussion on most issues. There were several churches that needed to be closed because of too few members and not enough resources to keep them open. I am happy to report that Rebecca Mincieli has been reappointed to John Wesley United Methodist Church!

The theme for this year's conference was Vital Conversations: Race, and Psalm: 137 was the guiding scripture.

The vision of our Annual Conference is “Transformed by the Holy Spirit, United in Trust we will boldly proclaim Christ to the world.” Our mission is to equip, connect and support local, regional, and global ministries to make disciples of Jesus Christ, and to serve all in His name.

Our guest Bishop was Cynthia Moore-Koikoi, Bishop to the Western PA Conference. A memorable quote from her is "As a woman of color I have learned the gift of perseverance being able to hold on to hope in the midst of oppression."

The Bible study leadership was provided by Rev. Dr. Javier Vier, and the music leadership by Mark Miller, both from the Drew Theological Seminary. The music was both joyous and inspirational. I am embarrassed to announce that I did not get up in time for the Bible Study!

On Thursday, we were divided into small groups to discuss racism. We were instructed to speak with respect, speak only when you held the talking piece, which was a wooden cross, speak only for myself, be specific, speak in a way that encourages dialogue, be sensitive to cultural differences, be brief and to the point, listen with respect, listen for understanding, be open for transformation. What is shared in the circle stays in the circle. Personal information that is shared in circle is kept confidential. I found this to be a great way to feel safe in a group and to make sure everyone has the opportunity to speak. It is also a way to really listen to others.

Attending our Annual Conference is an opportunity to experience the United Methodist Connectional System. Thank you for this opportunity. ~ Demaris Kooker

Announcements Water for Falmouth Road Race: As part of our hospitality, we offer free water to the runners. Please donate a case or two of water and put them in the Fitzgerald Room (please, not in the office). Thank you! Thank you to Jack Gardner and Ken Peal for installing shelves in the Creative Spirit Room. They will really help us to store items designated for our sales. Such a space-saver, and such a wonderful job by these two gentlemen.

Loaves and Fishes Food Drive The Bible tells us the wonderful story of how Jesus fed thousands of followers with what seemed like a very small amount of food. The Outreach Ministry Team would like to

challenge the congregation to do the same thing. We are challenging the congregation to bring in 500 containers of food during the months of July and August. It seems that this is the time of the year when the Falmouth Service Center receives fewer donations, due to vacations and other distractions. Next to the box where we collect the food each month, there is a chart for you to record the number of items you donate. Put a tally mark on the chart for each box, can, bottle, container, etc. that you put into the box. We will report weekly on our 500-Container Challenge. Thank you for your support of this project.

A History of John Wesley’s Music Program

In the early 1930's the worship services at the Main Street Church were supported by a music program led by Mrs. Lackey, Choir Director (wife of the then pastor Rev. E. Dent Lackey) and Miss Maude Fuller, Organist and youngest of the musical Fuller family. Mrs. Lackey was replaced in 1940 by Mrs. Veazie L Brackett, but Maude continued to serve for many years. These were times when church-going was expected, and music and singing were important parts of all services. As a reminder to us of the times we are recalling – the Falmouth Enterprise reported in June, 1929 that “capacity audiences have marked every performance at the Elizabeth Theatre since its installation of ‘the talkies’ a week ago.” Some of us may remember the theater (now Maxwell and Co.), few of us remember talkies.

In the summer of 1930, Rev. Lackey suggested to the Fuller brothers (Milton and LeRoy) that they arrange a concert to raise money toward a piano for the church. Milton L. Fuller, who acted as Music Director for the brothers, served Prospect Street Methodist Church in Gloucester during the winter. LeRoy E. Fuller, the Organist, had a winter post at Harbor Methodist Church in Scituate. This suggestion led to a concert not only that summer (which paid for a piano) but which continued for many years after. The concerts presented serious, high quality music and involved singers from many local churches in addition to the Methodist Church. Selections were from operas, cantatas and the traditional choral repertoire. Also included were instrumental pieces such as piano and organ duets. The Fuller brothers’ commitment was such that they came to the Cape regularly during the summer and became seasonal Organist and Choir Director for the church. The summer concerts continued from 1930 to 1942, then began again after the War in 1947, as the Enterprise reported “at the request of many people who look forward to the opportunity to hear a large choir and soloists.” The 1947 concert was the 14th,, and they were to continue to at least 1950. The 1948 concert was presented as the culmination of the centennial celebrations for the Main Street Church building.

Maude Fuller’s service as year-round Organist and eventually Choir Director continued until late 1955. She served under five pastors and saw the church name change from “M. E. Church” to “First M. E. Church of Falmouth” to “First Methodist Church of Falmouth”.

In 1936, a new Frazee organ was installed at a cost of $1,500, enhancing the music program. It served nearly 20 years at the Main Street church before being moved to the new John Wesley Church. It was part of the attraction for later organists who served at John Wesley. Jim Stevens, a well-known local musician, was Organist and Choir Director from 1955 to 1958. In October 1958, Dr. and Mrs. Paul Giuliana took over as Organist and Choir Director. Paul, a skilled organist, was President of the Cape Cod Conservatory and a former assistant professor at Boston University.

In 1961, Mrs. Louis W Wise took over the music program at John Wesley after serving for four years as Organist and Choir Director at West Roxbury Methodist Church. She left only a few years later for family reasons.

In the years following the 1936 installation of the organ, the Trustees continued to struggle with maintenance and financial issues. At one point there was a suggestion “pipes to be taken down and turned over to Frazee Organ Co. for cash”. Then in the 1950’s after the organ was moved to the new church, work began to “overhaul our organ and add 2 stops”. But these were complicated and expensive activities, and at one point the Trustees recognized the need for “advice of someone else who is familiar with organs”. One of the last entries in the Trustees’ book of minutes in April, 1959 is “completing organ work”. From that point no more records are available. We know that in the late 1960s the church purchased the electric Allen organ that is still in service today. There is no record of the disposition of the Frazee organ although this story may elicit recollections from present-day John Wesley parishioners.

The music program continues to flourish with help from talented musicians that play organ or piano. Some of the more recent names are Barbara Roncetti, David Nygard, Joan Dewsbury, Claire St Laurent-Ethier, Robert Wyatt. And now, Roy Campbell. Our Choir or Music Directors continue the tradition from the early days of Methodism. Many in the church will recognize Janet Malatos, Linda Whitehead, Susie Daly, Brenda Rodenhizer, Bob Clemence, David Nygard, Dorothy Carlock, Ted Burt, John Yankee, Joe Dudzinski. And Kari Fietek, our present director is continuing the tradition of starting new programs. ~ Ken Peal

Summertime, 2017

Summer visitors have arrived To vacation here at the shore.

Beaches and town are now crowded Even more than ever before.

Everybody wants to relax, Travel, sightsee and have some fun… Swimming, boating and kayaking, There is something for everyone.

And Pastor Rebecca’s sermons On Sunday mornings at Surf Drive,

Meaningful, inspirational, At the beach, make one feel alive.

Alive with Nature all around, The ocean, seagulls and fresh air;

I go every week without fail And hope that you will all be there.

It’s the highlight of my summer To commune together outside, To hear the Holy Scripture read, And with God on the beach abide.
