One of the most famous songs to come from Godspell is, “Day by Day,” and in fact, I’m sure you could sing it to yourself right now. Just look at the lyrics, “Day by day, O dear Lord, three things I pray: to see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, follow thee more nearly, day by day.” And just imagine if we took these words seriously – see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, follow thee more nearly. It would mean that we would have to grow in our knowledge of God and who God is and what God wants us to do in our lives. According to Proverbs, that’s what the wise do. And so shouldn’t we be growing and learning? As you know, we’ve been looking at the book, “Five Practices of Fruitful Living” by Robert Schnase, and the third practice he writes about is Intentional Faith Development. He says, “Faith development refers to how we purposefully learn in community, outside of worship, in order to deepen our faith and to grow in grace and in the knowledge and love of God.” Now I realize this may sound intimidating to some, a waste of time to others, and something that’s ‘nice but not needed’ to yet others. However, I think it’s important to realize that none of us know all there is about the Christian faith and how to live like Christ on a daily basis, in our thoughts, words and action. And while we may feel that we learn at Sunday worship, there is a deeper level of growth when we share our thoughts and opinions with others. As Schnase writes, “Christian disciples strive to develop faith and grow in Christ-likeness through study and learning, and God is best able to form disciples when people do this together and not by themselves. Others help us interpret God’s Words for our lives, offering an antidote to self-absorbed interpretations that merely confirm our current lifestyles, attitudes and behaviors.” In others words, sharing with others broadens our view of the Bible, challenges our thinking and stretches us to reflect on how we can better see, love and follow Christ day by day. Schnase talks about intentional faith development, because we need to remember how important it is to feed our spiritual souls. Think of those times when you felt very close to God, loved by God, used by God. And then those times you felt there was a distance. Could it have been that you stepped away – were less likely to take time to pray, to attend church, to even think about your Christian walk. And my guess is that you felt unsettled, out of sorts in some way. Until you “intentionally” did something to draw closer to God again. We all know how difficult it can be to make our way in this confusing world. We are told by the culture, and the myriad of voices around us, what we should think and do. That’s why those who are serious about growing in wisdom and understanding, overcome excuses, make time, find a study that fits their schedule and commit to it. And so I encourage you, now during Advent, and over the coming year, to attend at least one study that will help you learn and deepen your faith and understanding. Remember, Jesus said, “Seek first the kingdom of God, and all these things will be given to you.” ~ Pastor Rebecca

December, 2016

This is a half-hour service in the chapel with hymn singing followed by a message delivered by Rev. Fred Meade from the North Falmouth Congregational Church. Lunch is served after the service. All are welcome. There is no cost, but donations are always gratefully accepted.

Food for the Soul Wednesday, December 7th at 12 noon

Special thanks and requests from your Financial Secretary:

With more gratitude than we will be able to fit into the newsletter, our copier will want to print, and you will have the time to read, I give you all my (abbreviated version of) thanks. Thank you to our weekly offering counters: Bob and Pat Dinsmore, Henry and Lynne Brown, Amy Clatanoff Brown, Donna Fish, Dottie Hack, Eileen Burt, and Michelle Peal. Each week, a team of two of them slips quietly (or maybe not so quietly…ha ha ha!) into a room and works diligently to accurately count and record our generous weekly offerings. My accuracy in recording starts with theirs; and, I am grateful for every step they take to help me do my job to the best of my ability. Thank you to all of you who give so generously of your time, talent, and treasure. I like to say, “Busy equals blessed.” John Wesley UMC sure is one busy place! Your joyful giving keeps us all busy doing God’s work, sharing His love, and doing so beautifully. We are blessed! In four short years, you have changed me profoundly – often in ways I didn’t even know I needed to be changed (and I know God’s not finished with me yet…there’s PLENTY of room for improvements). Thank you, with all that I am, for this! I am eternally grateful for my JWUMC family. It’s that time of year when we reflect on the past year and plan for the next. As I do this, I would like to ask for your help with a few small steps that may help our counters in a very big way. Those of you who turn in a pledge card receive a packet of envelopes to make your offerings in. The use of these envelopes helps us to more easily record your offerings for tax purposes, eliminates a couple of extra steps for our counters, and reduces the chance for error or confusion. I am requesting and would be so grateful if, as often as possible, you would try to use them for your

offerings. Please write separate checks for other donations or payments such as: altar flowers, memorial or

other special donations, bible study books, t-shirts, etc., as these are totaled separately from the regular

offerings. And, while the commitment of a pledge is extremely helpful and greatly appreciated in planning the church’s budget, it is not a requirement for receiving envelopes. If you are unable to commit to a pledge at this time, but would like to make offerings as you are able, you may request envelopes using the pledge card. Write “as I am able” for your pledge amount and I will know to assign envelopes to you. You will receive a statement of giving at the end of the year for your taxes and will help make the counters’ jobs a little easier. Please call me at 508-495-1031 or email me at [email protected] with any questions. Blessings,

Carrie Leonard

This year the "Change the World" Campaign supported: the JWUMC youth group (scholarships for missions, a retreat, and/or trips), UMCOR (disaster relief), St. Barnabus’ Shelter Program, Wings for Falmouth Families, Cape Cod Council of Churches A Baby Center, Neighborhood Falmouth, Teen Challenge, Mercy Ships, Cuddle Cots, Falmouth Hospital Baby Bags, and more. Our church's "Change the World" campaign has been successful! Thank you for keeping the jingle in the offering plates for these worthy causes!

The spaghetti dinner to benefit Heroes in Transition was a great and delicious success as we raised $2, 570, thanks to Nancy Leger and her team; and the Golf Marathon raised nearly $7,000 in profit, thanks to Donna Fish and the amazing golfers and sponsors!

The large wooden box in the Fellowship Hall for the Women's Shelter of Cape Cod received a large amount of donations like: hygiene products, toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, detergent, or cleaning products over the year.

We have donated money to: Hope Hospice, Neighborhood Falmouth, UMCOR, Around the Table, Big Brothers and Sisters, Wings for Falmouth Families, the Alternate Gift Market (fee), the Upper Cape Chaplaincy, our youth group's mission trip, Allison Deyo's mission trip to Ecuador, Operation Respect, Habitat for Humanity Cape Cod, Smile Train, Falmouth Hospital Baby Bags project, Haven for Healing, Cuddle Cots, Cataumet Shelter, Cape Cod Center for women, Cape Cod Council of Churches, the pastor’s discretionary fund, the Carriage House, Heroes in Transition, and more! The donations, as of September, were for $13,640!

We supported a Haiti project for food and formula for babies for the AGM this Fall. It’s a 25-year program that is developing, producing, and distributing highly nutritious foods. It’s a “Peanut Butter Medicine” where they are learning how to plant and develop the crop.

The congregation donated backpacks and supplies for the backpacks to the campaign of the Falmouth Service Center.

There is an ongoing collection of food for the Falmouth Service Center that is delivered monthly! Thanks, everyone!

We said good-bye to a member, Donna Mates, who went to be with our Lord this year! We thank her for her service.

CHURCH MOUSE

So I hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving. We really do have so much to be thankful for and it got me to waxing philosophically. Here's some of my thoughts... This year my family served turducken. Which begs the question, which came first, the turducken or the turducken egg? Also, how can turkeys live if their innards are shrunk wrapped like that? And why do we only question the motives of a chicken crossing the road, and not a turkey? Finally, I was happy to see that Proposition 3 passed this year regarding the humane treatment of farm animals. So will this affect the way turkeys will be brought to market and cooked in the future? I can just see the farmers gently lulling them to sleep like this: "Close your eyes, little turkeys, and imagine in the distance you hear the gentle tinkle of wine glasses and the sounds of soft conversation and laughter that soothe your whole being. Imagine your tummy full of delicious fruits and nuts and savory bread. You’re naked, covered in oil, feeling a warm glow all over." Sounds very enticing to me!

Recently Pastor Rebecca gave a sermon about how we Christians are to coexist in today's culture, and how we are to make sound and wise decisions. So I thought long and hard about it, and these are my thoughts... The government makes decisions by telling us, "This is how it's done!" Journalists say, "We can always retract it later." Medicine says. "This won't get us sued." Entertainment says, "The Millennials will love it." Finance says, "We'll bury it in the fine print." Tech says, "This is the way Apple does it." Christians say, "WWJD!" Whew! I feel better already! (P.S. If you don't know what WWJD stands for, I'm worried!)

Hey, speaking of learning the basics, I thought I'd share with you a great Sunday School lesson I was taught years ago that has made me the wonderful mouse I am. It's about Noah's Ark. You see, everything I ever needed to know I learned from the story of Noah's Ark.

ONE: Don't miss the boat. TWO: Remember that we're all in the same boat! THREE: Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark. FOUR: Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals. FIVE: Don't listen to the critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done. SIX: Build your future on high ground. SEVEN: For safety's sake, travel in pairs. EIGHT: Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs. NINE: When you're stressed, float awhile. TEN: No matter the storm, when you follow the Lord, there's always a rainbow waiting.

There's so much more going on at church that I just can't keep up or write about it. The Stewardship Campaign, the Christmas Fair, prayer groups, Dinner Church, and much more. And I have so much sarchasm* to share with you, but I'm going to have to end it here since the Grinch in the office gives me limited space. (Laura, you know I love you!!!!)

Merry Christmas... Your Mouse *Sarchasm - The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it.

Girls Movie Night

On Friday, November 4th we had a Girls Movie Night for our Youth. It was nice to get together, just as girls and talk about whatever we wanted to. We ate lasagna, painted our nails, chatted and watched a movie. Be on the lookout for more Youth events that are targeted just for our girls!

Youth Food Drive

Thank you so much to our 10 Youth who came out on Saturday, November 12th to solicit and collect non-perishable goods from the shoppers at Shaw’s Supermarket. The Youth had different roles, such as passing out items that are needed for the Falmouth Service Center, collecting goods when shoppers exited the store, collecting monetary donation, holding signage, organizing the bags for a smooth delivery to the Service Center and more. Be sure to check out all of the pictures from the day on our Facebook page! A special thank-you to Amy Ladd, Tim and Carrie

Leonard, Elizabeth Olsen and Laura Ware who stuck around in the cold to help our Youth!

Mark Pottle One of our younger members of John Wesley, Mark Pottle is the recipient of our December 2016 Children & Youth Spotlight! Although Mark is a 2nd grader, he has already grown so much since stepping into the doors of John Wesley about a year ago. By the help of his grandparents, Mark faithfully attends church and WoW on a weekly basis. Most recently, Mark has been attending Sunday School and our all-church events, such as the Easter Egg Hunt, Trunk or Treat and more. Mark has always been very confident while answering questions during kid sermons, hanging out with the big kids and holding his ground with all the girls in WoW.

It has been really exciting to see Mark’s knowledge and love for God grow over the past few months. He and his family participate in the “Faith At Home” weekly activities and come to church remembering what he read in the Bible. Mark has also found camaraderie amongst our older Youth boys. The older guys have taken Mark under their wing; they sit with him, talk with him (baseball is always a highlight) and play basketball outside together. It’s so great to see how our younger kids blossom when they have a supportive and loving environment around them. Thank you to all the Youth boys who have been a role model to Mark. Because of your role, I am confident that Mark will also follow in your footsteps in being a positive role model to younger kids.

A Note from Allison

I humbly ask all to respect my time during the hour of Sunday School (9:30 to 10:25 am) on Sunday Mornings. My focus during this time is on our children, their families and our volunteers. Unless the content is Sunday School related, I ask that we talk during Coffee Hour and/or during the week.

Thank you for your understanding, Allison.

December, 2016

A Christmas Fair "THANK YOU!" With much love and gratitude....I can't thank each of you enough for the role you played in making this year's Christmas Fair a huge success! It's truly a blessing for John Wesley and our community.

As I indicated on Sunday this was my 11th fair, my third with John Wesley, this definitely being my favorite. The fair is a lot of work with so many working on it year round...the team of "chairs" are just fantastic and I could not do my job without them. I'm so appreciative of everyone's efforts.

• A special shout-out to new members Mark & Colleen Karsner who stepped forward to donate Mark's beautiful

and unique wooden treasures which contributed to the significant increase in this year's total.

• To my wonderful husband Larry who has been there throughout the year helping with whatever needed to be

taken care of, especially right before the fair, stepping up to make sure the household didn't fall apart.

• To Tom Hoke...for your continual support throughout the year, no matter the fundraiser, you're always there

willing to lend a helping hand.

To Lisa Asendorf who spent the week of the fair being my extra set of hands. To the elves, the crafters, the

cooks, the bakers....so many to mention, you know who are and all equally valued and appreciated.

Your efforts have paid off....the tentative total for this year is $18,100. This does not include the Sunday sales, we will continue to sell for a few more weeks, and obviously expenses will needed to be deducted. Final number will be announced when we know.

As with all fundraisers, we are always looking for ways to improve, so if you have any suggestions I would love to hear from you. Well done good and faithful servants....Let's do this again in 2017! Together as family we can do great things for our church home! With much love, THANK YOU! Any questions or comments, contact me at [email protected] or 508-444-6038 In God's Service, Aline

December, 2016

Almost 2 years ago, Ben and I gave birth to our first son Mark, who, sadly was born still at 38 weeks. Unfortunately, we were unable to spend much time with him after he was born and this was very difficult for us.

Shortly after we started a "gofundme" page dedicated to raising money for a device called a "Cuddle Cot" that is used in hospitals to help parents of stillborn children spend more time with them. The cot is essentially a special cooling device that is placed under the mattress of a bassinet used to cool and regulate the body temperature of the baby. This device gives the parents of the child lots of time to spend with them.

We have since raised enough money to donate Cuddle Cots to Falmouth, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Cape Cod hospitals. And we gladly have about half of the money raised to donate our fourth cuddle cot. Our next donation is going to go to Mass General hospital in Boston. Our ultimate goal is to get one Cuddle Cot placed in every hospital in the state.

We feel grieving is life-long but I think if we had more time to say goodbye and really spend time with him, it would’ve helped us be a little further in the grieving process.

To read more about it you can go to gofundme.com and search “Cuddle Cots in Memory of Baby Mark”.

FYI: The Changing the World money for December will go toward Cuddle Cots.

The 2017 flower chart is now posted on the door on the left as you exit the Sanctuary for you to sign up for altar flowers for the 10:30am Sunday service. Please print clearly (cursive is hard to read). Additional information is listed to the right of the chart.

It’s that time of year when we think and plan for how we will financially support John Wesley in the coming year. Pledge packets and information went out, but if you have not received yours, please contact the office, and we will make sure you get one.

Church Conference Booklets: Our “state of the church” gathering was held on November 29th. Church Conference booklets were given out at the meeting. There are copies of the booklet in the church office for anyone who was unable to attend.

Pastor Rebecca and John will be visiting her parents in Indiana on Tuesday, Dec. 6th—Friday, Dec. 9th.

Christmas Gifts

God gave to us Jesus, His Son To show His love for everyone.

What can we give for gifts this year To others who are far or near?

To share our love in many ways And try to brighten others’ days.

To help the hungry to be fed, To thank God for our daily bread.

To strive for peace and harmony, Help the world from war to be free.

To respect not just those we know, But, to everyone, kindness show.

To be faithful and judge no one, And thank God for Jesus, His Son.

The best gifts we can give are free. They are priceless for you and me.
