It took a considerable amount of time, effort and money to restore the building and bring it up to code. The building, originally built in 1953 for Ray Woods and used as a lumber company, had been sitting empty for 3 and a half years and was considered by many to be an eye sore. Ward Stanberry, former owner of the building and former mayor, commented, “You took an old and ugly building and you made it beautiful”. “Well,” said KCAM owner and curator Ana Villaronga- Roman, “we did not make it beautiful – it was beautiful – the building lines were outstanding and the design was absolutely perfect to house what is today Fort Bend County’s only art museum, a place of pride for all to enjoy. The building just needed a bit of tender loving care.” Villaronga-Roman continues, “The landscaping is planted and taken care of by KCAM volunteers and interns, and is hand-watered daily. This landscaping usually has at least one orange accent to highlight the logo color for the museum.” The paver work was one of the most expensive beautification projects KCAM has finished. The paver paved area is now an inviting area used during events and for live music every third weekend along with Market Days and No Label beer tastings. Out on the front paver patio are wooden bistro tables and chairs to give the museum entrance a more inviting look. The south side of the museum adjacent to the railroad track area has now been converted with triangular shade ‘sails’ to add more curb appeal from Hwy 90 and to improve the look of one of KCAM’s street corners. Visitors have commented that driving in between the Railroad Park & Tourist Center and the KCAM on Avenue B is the prettiest way to enter the historic district of our city. Congratulations to KCAM. Photo by Debi Beauregard for The Katy News. KCAM is Katy Proud! The Katy City Council has approved a plan to annex three parcels of land to the west of the current city limits in order to increase its commercial tax revenues and lower taxes for residential property. The move allows Katy to generate more tax revenues from commercial properties at a time when it will be providing services to more homes than ever. “We have a new development coming in with Cane Island and they are going to put a lot of rooftops out there and you really want a balance between commercial and rooftops,” said Katy city administrator Byron Hebert. At a special session of Katy City Council on Thursday, May 29 th , the city annexed three separate tracts of land. The first is 350 acres between the Katy Freeway and Highway 90 from Holiday World RV Sales west to Brooklyn Drive. Katy will extend water and sewer lines to this property to make it more attractive for commercial development. Construction will happen in two phases. First water and sewer will be extended as far west as Pederson Road. Phase two will bring those city services further west to Brooklyn Drive and will happen after completion of phase one. Pederson Road will also be expanded to a four lane concrete road at a cost of $1.1 million which will be paid for through Katy’s share of METRO tax revenues. Currently the road is in disrepair and will need to be improved to support increased heavy truck traffic that will come with new commercial businesses. All of the property will be zoned for commercial use which will mean additional tax revenues that will allow Katy to reduce residential property taxes. “It helps us with our plan to lower taxes 2 cents per year for the next four years,” said Hebert. The second parcel to be annexed is 28.6 acres in Waller County owned by Ronald Hoover which is along I-10 eastbound next to Holiday World. The third tract is the 388-acre Young Ranch which abuts the Hoover property to the south and west. In a similar move the owners of land occupied by Rooms-To-Go on the Katy Freeway asked to become part of Fulshear’s extra territorial jurisdiction. This sets the stage for that property to be annexed by Fulshear at some point in the future. Edge of Tomorrow@ The Movies

By Sam Eifling

The life of a soldier named Cage in “Edge of Tomorrow” plays like a smudged CD, blatting the same note on repeat ad infinitum. An ad guy turned media spinmeister after an overwhelming alien invasion, the officer finds himself labeled a deserter and thrown into the infantry of a futuristic D-Day, clad in a tanklike exosuit. He, like the other humans in his unit, dies a horrible death fighting the thrashing mechanistic squid monsters that have taken over Europe. Then, in an instant, he awakes, as if to the strains of Sonny and Cher’s “I Got You Babe,” to replay the day.

Tom Cruise plays this perpetual Lazarus with his typical cockiness, fading into bewilderment, despair and determination. The mystery as to why he keeps Konami coding back into existence isn’t as interesting as you’d hope, but when he does figure it out he goes from being cannon fodder to the last hope for human civilization. And he dies over and over and over and over and over with nothing but new memories to show for it.

This is, as sci-fi action premises go, pretty decent. What pushes “Edge of Tomorrow” past the boundaries of genre and toward the more august realm of real cinema is its dedication to tone — this is an uncommonly cohesive, consistent and compelling. The action sequences rip across the screen and the plot moves spryly, even as it has to fold back upon itself like an origami accordion. The film builds by accretion, adding a smidge more in each successive day, twisting along the way. In a good way, it is extraordinarily stressful. Perhaps never before has one person died so many times in a single movie. A few dozen fatalities here, a handful there, and after a while you start to feel for the guy.

Director Doug Liman squeezes a couple of laughs out of the Sisyphean absurdity of this errand, and even a bit of romantic pathos. Cage’s unlikely guide on this mission of mayhem is an alpha soldier named Rita, played by a ferocious Emily Blunt, as if there were any other sort. She reveals to him that she once

had the same looping power, and guides him anew each day, even he has to reintroduce himself each time. This is the great burden of his recursive immortality: Watching her and everyone around him die over and over and over, even as he moves closer to solving his awful day.

Children of the video game era will recognize this story structure: We’ve played it on a million late nights and rainy afternoons, on Nintendo and PC to PlayStation. Incremental progress followed by horrible death and revival is a staple of adventure shoot-’em-ups, where the only risk in wandering is the cost of your time. When life no longer is the currency of success — indeed, because his revival depends on a decisive death, Cage must avoid mere injury each day — then risk and creativity reign. Have we probed all possibilities? No sense in holding back if we have a guess to make, an avenue to explore.

Here, in action, “Edge of Tomorrow” illustrates a certain version of the entrepreneurship that supposedly drives the Millennial generation. No problem looms too big just so long as failure is always, always an option. Rather, after a spell, when failure becomes entwined with strategy, as Cage finds, a version of freedom results. The adage that whatever doesn’t kill us makes us stronger turns out to be deficient. Instead, whatever doesn’t kill us merely delays our return as a craftier, smarter version of ourselves. Hang that notion on a crackling spectacle like “Edge of Tomorrow” and call it a killer summer blockbuster.

The Katy Freedom Celebration

The Katy Freedom Celebration fireworks display will be held at Katy Mills Mall on Thursday, July 4. The fireworks are launched between the east side of the mall and Katy Fort Bend Road. This display begins at dark (approximately 9:00 p.m.) and can be viewed from several miles around the mall area.

Diane Covert, Associate Vice President for Development at Lutheran Social Services of the South along with Belinda George and John C. Curry of BP, presented the City of Katy with an art piece depicting a mother and a child created by one of the Krause Children’s Center residents.

Krause Children’s Center is a temporary, long-term treatment home located in Katy. Many of the children at the Krause Children’s Center, founded in 1995, come from abusive or often neglected home lives. There are 65 girls ranging in ages from 11-17 years old. The center provides education, spiritual guidance, structure and a safe environment for these

students to heal. It is the hope that through the intervention of the Krause Center that the multi-generational cycle of abuse can be broken and that these children can lead healthy and normal lives after leaving the center.

The Krause Center is run by Lutheran Social Services. BP employees volunteer an average of 400 hours a year and have raised more than a quarter of a million dollars for Krause by sponsoring their annual “Tomorrow’s Child” golf benefit. This year’s tournament was held on June 16 at BlackHorse Golf Club in Cypress.

For more information on Krause Children’s Center, go to www.krausechildrenscenter.org.

REAL MUSCLEIN HEART

First Collegiate WinBy Tom Behrens

Kennedy Ishee, 18 years old, hits a pretty strong drive off the tee, enough for her to finish atop the leader board at the CPT Gleannloch Collegiate Open. “I can drive the ball really far, 250-260 yards for how tall I am,” says Ishee. She is 5’2” and weighs 105 lbs. “I can drive the ball as far as the other girl college players I play with. They are way bigger than me. My chipping has gotten really good over the past two months, definitely another one of my strong suits.”

Golf became a passion for Ishee at the age of 13, when her father, Bill, took her golfing with him. “I remember when we started playing competitively,” said Ishee. “He used to win, but now I win.” She doesn’t have a handicap. “I don’t really need one. I usually shoot in the low to mid 70s.”

Before attending Cinco Ranch High School, she participated in the golf program at Beck Junior High School and came in second in district her first year of playing competitive golf. She has been to the state 5A golf tournament four years in a row.

“At the tournament (Gleannloch) I only missed one-up-and-down the whole tournament…you are off the green and have to chip it on and make the putt to make par.” She had a total of eight.

What was it like for her first ever college tournament?“There wasn’t really a lot of pressure, not a lot of stress. I

just kind of went out there.” Ishee continues, “I was just going out there to see how I would fare against them, and I guess it just kind of worked out.” In the first day after 36 holes, she had a 69 and a 70 and a seven stroke lead. The second day she shot a 73, winning the tournament by five strokes.

Ishee is a 2014 graduate with honors at Cinco Ranch High School. In the fall she will be attending Oral Roberts University on a full ride golf scholarship. Any early thoughts about turning pro somewhere along the line?

“I’m definitely thinking about it. I just want to get to college first, complete my education, but then we will see what happens after that.”

Cinco Ranch High School is known for its excellence in sports but many Katy sports fans don’t know Cinco has a great ice hockey team. It isn’t a UIL team, and you won’t find the team listed on the school’s athletic website, but its team uniforms are maroon and white and the Cinco winning attitude is there. Twenty-two of its 24 players attend Cinco Ranch High School.

The team is a member of International Scholastic Hockey League (ISHL). The ISHL teams derive their names mainly from the predominant area of the city where the teams draw their players. In the Southern Division, of which Cinco Ranch is a member, some of the other teams are Seven Lakes, Clear Lakes and Pearland/Friendswood. Not all team members come from the named high school.

Head coach, Arthur Jean talks about the make-up of his team. “I’ve always had 24-26 kids, freshmen to seniors, boys and girls.” Jean had three girls on this past season’s team. “Typically when girls play with girls there is no checking, but in high school there is checking. There’s kind of an unwritten rule you don’t check the girls, but there’s no rule that says you can’t.”

Kids always come to Jean and want to play for Cinco. “I can draft 18 players and two goalies. I always have a lot of alternates. We never turn kids away. With travel, hockey players that play in the ISHL on any weekend could have three to four kids out of town, so the alternates get to play…it works out pretty well.” Traveling hockey players are a step

higher in their hockey skills, and the teams regularly travel across the U.S. competing in ice hockey tournaments.

So why does Jean have no problem in getting players?

“The oil industry has something to do with it,” believes Jean. “Many people who work in the oil industry live in Cinco Ranch and have Canadian roots where hockey is played and followed regularly.”This past season:

Cinco Ranch captured the Southern Division title this past season, but lost to Cy-Fair of the Northern Division, in the City Championship. “The kids that I had this year were probably not the most talented group since I have been here, average to above average players, no super stars, but they worked pretty hard, played pretty much as a team,” said Jean, “just a group of kids that have played together for four years and gelled as a team.”

Cy-Fair was the odds on favorite to win the City Championship before the season began. “They had maybe eight or nine travel hockey players, had the same group of kids from last year that lost in the finals.

“Kids stepped it up this year. Second and third line kids really improved and had solid seasons,” said Jean. Brian Spengler, 27 goals and Jake Modaro, 26 goals were top scorers for the Cougars. Goalie, Michael Herlien recorded an 89 percent block average.

ISHL hockey season begins in October; more information regarding Cinco Ranch hockey can be found at http://www.ishl.org/.

Cinco Ranch Takes Southern Division Title;Loses to Cy-Fair in City ChampionshipBy Tom Behrens

Katy Players on the Sugar Land ImperialsBy Tom Behrens

The Sugar Land Imperials ice hockey team came about as a result of the Houston Aeros moving to Iowa. “Our ownership group was committed to keep hockey alive in our community,” said Jamie Feltis, Sugar Land Imperial general manager. “When we were approached in April of 2013 from the NA3HL, we jumped at the chance to bring a junior team here.”

Last year the Imperials made it to the playoffs losing to the Dallas Junior Stars in the first round.

The Sugar Land Imperials is a developmental league giving talented players a chance for exposure to NHL and college scouts. Imperial players come from all over the U.S., even the world. “Last year we had a player from Russia and one from Sweden. This year we will have players from Sweden and Canada,” said Feltis.

Imperial team captain, Chance Rickel is from Katy and attended Cinco Ranch High School. “Chance was selected for the Top Prospects Tournament last season, which is equivalent to an all-star tournament.” He currently works at the (Sugar Land) ice rink and is going to Texas Tech this fall. “Chance was an incredible leader for our team both on and off the ice. He helped recruit many of our local players on our roster last season and assisted the coaching staff at our first open try-out in May.” Forward, Matthew Davies is another Katy player. Eight out of 23 players come from the Houston area.

Head coach, Jarod Palmer is a former NHL player having played with the Minnesota Wild and NAHL Houston Aeros.Imperial players pay to play:

Imperial team members receive no salary or income from the team. “They actually pay us to play,” said

Feltis. “It’s really their passion for the sport. These guys are wonderful hockey players, have incredible talent and they want to advance, want to become professional hockey players. Unless you are a Wayne Gretsky, it’s very difficult to make it out there on your own without playing in a league/team such as ours. We get them in front of NHL scouts as well as for D1, D2, and D3 colleges.

“If you look at our website for the NA3HL.com you will constantly see new links and updates about players. They end up going to play in a higher level league, or they go to college to get the exposure, and from there they can get drafted into the professional league.”

Many the Imperials players work at Sugar Land Ice and Sports Center, the home ice for the Imperials so they can have a flexible schedule. Junior Imperials Hockey:

The Sugar Land Imperials has taken over the operations for the Houston Hitmen Hockey. “The Hitmen are now the Junior Sugarland Imperials,” said Feltis. “These are players who will go through our system and then could go up to the Imperials in NA3HL. Basically we created a farm team, the travel organization, by taking that organization over.”

Sugar Land Imperials Camp starts the week of August 15. “We have 35 on our roster right now which goes down to 25 by August 31,” said Feltis. “We are still evaluating; we have players coming to us all the time.”

First home game is Sept. 20 at Sugar Land Ice and Sports Center, 16225 Lexington Blvd, Sugar Land, TX 77479. Home games are Fridays, Saturdays, 7:00 p.m. or Sundays 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 adults, children, $5.00.

Gallery Furniture to Build Third Store in RichmondBy Debi Beauregard

Mattress Mack is building his third and largest store in Fort Bend County. The new 165,000 square foot location broke ground off Texas 99 next to the Santikos Palladium Theatre and is expected to open in late November or December.

Jim McIngvale’s Gallery Furniture stores are long known in Houston for the amenities they provide to shoppers. The new location will showcase works created by Brookwood Community residents. “Work equals worth,” said Vivian Shade, executive director of Brookwood Community whose residents produce high quality decor pieces such as water colors, custom wood works, ceramics, glasswork as well as homegrown plants.

The new store will feature an indoor playground, tree house, parrots, monkeys and a full-service Texas-style restaurant to be managed by Laura McIngvale Brown, a U of H, Hilton School of Hotel and Restaurant management alumni.

“It’s a bold move,” says McIngvale, “but we feel the demand (in Katy, Sugar Land and Richmond) is there.” As many as 150 new employees will be hired at the location, according to Steve Salazar, a 27 year Gallery Furniture employee. “We will hire as many locals and military veterans as we can.”

The council considered approving an event request for a street closure of a portion of Nelson Way from Alicia’s Mexican Grille Driveway west to the cul-de-sac for the Summer Safety Celebration 2014, presented by The Emergency Room at Katy Main Street, Katy Mills Chick-fil-A, Alicia’s Mexican Grille and HEB. The event will be held on Saturday, June 28th from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. All voted Aye and the motion carried.

Council considered acceptance of Public Improve-ments for WoodCreek Reserve, Section 10, for Paving, Water, Sanitary Sewer and Drainage. All voted Aye and the motion carried.

Council considered an Ordinance appointing Clint Stockdick to the Convention and Tourism Bureau. All voted Aye and the motion carried.

Council considered an Ordinance allowing In-City Municipal Utility Districts to be part of the City of Katy’s Municipal Storm Water Permit by Interlocal Agreement. All voted Aye and the motion carried.

Council considered a resolution selecting Durotech, Inc., as the Construction Manager at risk for the construction of the New City Hall Building. All voted Aye and the motion carried.

Council considered a resolution authorizing the issuance of Unlimited Tax Refunding Bonds, Series 2014A by WoodCreek Reserve Municipal Utility District not to exceed $2.5 million. All voted Aye and the motion carried.

And finally council considered a resolution declaring the intention of the City of Katy, Texas to annex certain territory located west of the City of Katy, between Highway 90 and U.S. Interstate 10 including the Rights-Of-Way Paved and Unpaved to Pederson Road. All voted Aye and the motion carried.
