Dear Friends,

Please join me in wishing the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute a very happy 10th birthday! Over the past decade, hundreds of individuals, like you, have taken classes that have challenged, enlightened, and informed the way that we all think. Whether studying an important piece of art, debating the merits of a controversial new piece of legislation, or simply learning about the marketing of college football, these classes help shape the community in which we all live.

The College of Education and Health Professions is proud to be able to count OLLI as one of our “departments.” Offering educational programs for the youngest elementary school children through lifelong learning programs such as OLLI, we believe that the most important work we do is to help create a learned society where ideas and differences can be debated and challenged in a civil, constructive manner.

In addition to serving an important role in creating the kind of community we all want to live in, OLLI classes are also just plain fun! They provide a wonderful opportunity for individuals to learn something, but also to make friends and get to know their hometown a bit better. We have been

fortunate to have incredible leaders work with our OLLI,

including Kathleen Dorn and Susan Toneymon, and we are especially pleased to have a UA graduate in Josh Raney so effectively

providing the leadership that will usher OLLI into its

second decade.

So please, renew your membership, take a class, volunteer, or even give OLLI a call with a class you would like to see offered. I hope to see you at an OLLI event soon, and again, please join me in wishing OLLI a Happy Birthday!

Sincerely,

Michael T. Miller

Sandra Sawyer, assistant director of OLLI-UA, has been with the institute since 2008. She has seen it grow from just over 100 members and a handful of courses to over 500 members and 200 programs annually.

Sandra began working part time with OLLI in the fall of 2008, assisting with finances. As the institute gained momentum and quickly grew, the work became overwhelming for then director, and sole staff member, Kathleen Dorn. “It was a lot of work for one person. Think recruitment, promotions, outreach, curriculum and development,” says Sawyer. Recognizing this, Sandra, who at that time was working with the Road Scholar program, asked to have her duties shifted to assist OLLI with finances.

In May of 2012, Sandra accepted a full time position with the institute as the Operations Manager, working with all facets

of the program. Within a few shorts months she was asked to work more closely with the curriculum development team to allow the director more time to focus on membership, marketing, and development. “I was terrified. I had observed a curriculum meeting prior but was new to the process of devising course ideas, developing content and recruiting instructors.” Learning from committee members she gained a lot and quickly took the reins. Currently Sandra is the institute’s assistant director, working closely with the director, Josh Raney and each of the volunteer committees.

When asked what is her favorite part about being with OLLI she quickly replied “Working with this great demographic. We have some of the best people in and around Northwest Arkansas as OLLI members. I have met and worked closely

with doctors, nurses, former congressmen, teachers, artists, farmers, housewives, bank associates, and CEO’s. They are all warm and open, some of the friendliest people you would ever want to meet. I have come to learn just how important OLLI is to our members at this stage of their lives and I want to do all I can to help it continue.”

When Sandra isn’t keeping the OLLI wheels spinning she is heavily involved with the Kiwanis Club and PeeWee Spirit program in Farmington where she lives. She also enjoys reading and is a member of the Friends of the Fayetteville Public Library. Sandra loves spending time with her family, son Barry and his wife Rachel, and her daughter Mycayla, who will be attending the U of A this fall as a freshman. Let’s not forget her fur baby, Chew.

This fall Sandra is embarking on new ventures. In August she will be hosting, Nanaka, an exchange student from Japan, who will be residing with her until June 2018. Sandra will also be continuing her collegiate studies this coming year at the University of Arkansas.

VOLUNTEERING

Be a vOLLIunteer! Osher Institutes are member driven

organizations and volunteering is an ideal way to connect and serve. Your time, talents, and resources are valuable to ensure that OLLI is able to provide the highest level of educational experiences to adults in northwest Arkansas. Volunteers have the opportunity to attend training sessions to receive detailed information about program policies and procedures and each year they are recognized at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute’s annual member celebration!

We always need and appreciate volunteers just like you for:

• Course Ambassadors/Greeters: OLLI courses are held at various venues across the region so we need your help to check-

in participants, make announcements and introduce instructors. If you are planning to register and attend a course consider being a course ambassador!

• Office Ambassadors: At OLLI-UA we have a hard-working, but small staff. Volunteer a couple hours of your time helping in the OLLI office compiling packets, bulk mailings, photocopying, filing, answering the telephone, or other various administrative duties.

• Community outreach: Help OLLI grow by spreading the news of all the great opportunities at OLLI-UA. Assist OLLI staff in distributing catalogs, flyers and promotional materials. Connect us with community stakeholders who have an interest in supporting or sponsoring our programs. Present information on OLLI at

your next club meeting! • Special projects & events: Periodically

throughout the year OLLI has special events, fundraisers and exclusive programs. Be a part of making these moments special by helping plan, coordinate and facilitate these events.

• Drivers: If you like getting out and about then consider driving an OLLI van on one of our courses that offers transportation.

• Be an OLLI Leader: serve on one of OLLI’s committees and help shape future programs, courses and the direction of OLLI at the U of A.

To volunteer or for more details, contact the Volunteer Committee at [email protected], the OLLI office at (479)575-4545 or email us at [email protected].

OLLI operations and help keep costs low for our members, as we work to create an

intellectually stimulating and socially invigorating learning environment.

Gifts to support OLLI are tax-deductible and help ensure OLLI can continue offering affordable, lifelong learning opportunities

for adults who are interested in the joy of learning. Every gift, no matter the size, is an investment in the future of OLLI and helps us continue to build sustainable and vibrant programs.

Private support is crucial as we work to expand the outreach of OLLI to reach

a broader demographic, as the Northwest Arkansas community continues to grow.

It also allows us to prioritize the development of services and programs to enhance the infrastructure of OLLI,

such as creating an orientation program for new members, expanding the class

schedule to accommodate more evening classes for additional accessibility and upgrading our technology to improve

the delivery of class content.

Our Historic Garden HeritageDESCRIPTION: Arkansas has a long and involved gardening history. Even before the coming of Europeans, early residents of what would become Arkansas were sophisticated gardeners. American settlers in early Arkansas struggled to make a living, but that did not prevent them from planting flowers and other ornamentals in addition to food crops. Tom Dillard, a historian specializing in Arkansas history and culture, has studied Arkansas landscape history for years and he has accumulated a large collection of landscape photographs to illustrate this class. Our ancestors planted for food and beauty and photographs of these historic gardens will be discussed in the class.Instructor: Tom DillardDay / Date: Fri, 9/22/17 (1)Time: 10:00 am to 12:00 pmLocation: Drake Max Enrollment: 35Cost: $35.00 OLLI Member / $50.00 Non-OLLI Member

History records the stress created by economic crisis and war, a stress that was mainly addressed through dance, music and the movies. Swing Music was an integral force in all three. Running from 1932 to 1942, the Swing Era took music that had roots in New Orleans with Louis Armstrong and developed it into a sophisticated art form that was, and continues to be, enjoyed by people of all cultures from around the world. In addition to delving into a bit of American history, sociology and expressive movement, classroom lectures and group discussions will provide glimpses into the music and fascinating loves of the Americans who created it. Some names in this group include Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Woody Hermann, The Andrew Sisters, Harry James and Glenn Miller.Instructor: Gary BarrowDay / Date: Tues, 9/26/2017 - 10/10/2017 (3)Time: 10:00 am to 12:00 pmLocation: Drake Max Enrollment: 35Cost: $60.00 OLLI Member / $75.00 Non-OLLI Member Peeling Back the PigskinDESCRIPTION: Each fall football stadiums around the country light up and hungry fans tune in to watch their home team compete for a chance at the championship. Find out what it means to the university, the student athlete and the consumer. Steve Dittmore, Assistant Dean & Associate Professor of Recreation & Sport Management at the U of A, will discuss how the 1984 Supreme Court case of NCAA v. Board of Regents impacted media rights and set the stage for conference realignment, even Arkansas moving to the SEC and the arrival of the College Football Playoff. Learn the process for which games are broadcast by which networks and at which time. This course will take you from the fieldhouse to the broadcast booth as you learn the business of college football media.

The Bible and the QuranDESCRIPTION: The Quran is the Muslim’s Holy Bible, the same as the Bible is to Christians. The word ‘Quran’ means recitation. The Quran is written in Arabic poetic prose and is divided into 114 chapters. It contains the religious, social, civil, commercial, military and legal code of Islam. It also contains stories which occur in the Jewish and Christian Scriptures.Dr. Allen, who currently teaches courses on ancient Near Eastern history and religion, biblical and early Christian history, and biblical interpretation at the King Fahd Center for Middle Eastern Studies within the Fulbright College at the University of Arkansas, will explore the portrayals of the prophets found in these scriptures beginning with the earliest traditions of the prophets – Noah, Abraham, Lot, Moses and Jesus – and following their trajectories into the Middle Ages. This study will illustrate how Biblical and Quranic interpreters forged identities by appropriating and recasting prophets.Instructor: Spencer L. Stuart Davis in ContextDESCRIPTION: Stuart Davis: In Full Swing, a major exhibition organized by the Whitney in New York and the National Gallery in Washington, opens at Crystal Bridges in September. It presents four decades of Davis’s work, from the late 1920s through the early 1960s. Unlike many of his contemporaries who are known for their despair over the modern condition, Davis celebrated the American spirit as an embodiment of pleasure and optimism. Like Matisse, he

favored bright colors and bold shapes. His work captures the movement and spontaneity of jazz and the energy of American sports. He was one of the first artists to incorporate American commercial products into his work, anticipating Pop Art. This course will look at Davis’s work in the context of American realism, the tradition in which he was educated, as well as the movements of cubism and abstraction that he incorporated later on. It will combine a slide lecture about Davis and his contemporaries with discussion of individual works.Instructor: Linda LeavellDay / Date: Thurs, 9/28/17 (1)Time: 1:30 pm to 3:30 pmLocation: Drake Max Enrollment: 35Cost: $30.00 OLLI Member / $45.00 Non-OLLI Member Bram Stoker’s DraculaDESCRIPTION: Get into the Halloween spirit by diving into the vampire novel that started it all … Bram Stoker’s, Dracula! We’ll kick off this five week course with a peek at early English vampire literature before jumping into Stoker’s classic novel. We’ll be exploring themes ranging from gender to English imperialism with one question in mind: Why are we still so fascinated with Count Dracula? (Note: garlic and holy water not provided.)*To really get you in the spirit, on the fifth day (October 27) prepare to watch the movie, Dracula.Instructor: Ashley RobinsonDay / Date: 9/29/2017 - 10/27/2017 (5)Time: 10:00 am to 12:00 pmLocation: Drake or UPT-W Max Enrollment: 20Cost: $60.00 OLLI Member / $75.00 Non-OLLI Member

Wiederkehr Wine Cellars TourDESCRIPTION: Here in the beautiful Ozark Mountains sits a countryside that matches some of Europe’s great wineries. Because of the soil and climate that closely matched that of his homeland in Switzerland, Johann Andreas Wiederkehr and his family chose St. Mary’s Mountain (near Altus) as their new home. Here he carved his wine cellar and produced his fine wines from the grapes, blackberries and persimmons that were native to the area. Discover the Swiss winemaking heritage at the oldest and largest winery in mid-America. OLLI participants will tour the long rows of oak aging casks, wine storage, production and bottling areas. Afterwards the group will stop at the tasting room and shops, then conclude the tour with lunch in the Weinkeller Restaurant (lunch on your own).*The meeting location for transportation and directions for commuters will be sent upon registering. The Joy of Writing (…an Essay)DESCRIPTION: From memories of high school, the word essay can evoke groans, profuse perspiration, and maybe downright despair. However, there are steps that, once learned, turn the chore into a delight, and the pen will fly across the page accomplishing the purpose with style and creative aplomb. “But I’m not in high school; I don’t write essays any more,” you say. Every time one writes a thank you note, a letter to the editor, a letter of complaint, a letter of recommendation, an evaluation, or even communication to the family, that person is applying rhetorical modes and distinct purpose to his effort. Good writers aren’t born to the process; they learned the steps and have found the joy in putting words in print. Greg Camp is a published writer of books, editorials, and, of course, essays. If you are writing for publication or you want to improve your writing skills, let Greg show you how to turn your groans into big smiles.Participants will need to read essays in advance of the class.  The first one: http://wheretheclassroomends.com/wp- content/uploads/2013/07/White_OnceMoretotheLake1.pdf should be read by the first class period.Instructor: Greg CampDay / Date: Tues, 10/31/2017 - 11/28/2017 (5)Time: 2:00 pm to 4:00 pmLocation: Drake or UPT-W Max Enrollment: 20Cost: $65.00 OLLI Member / $80.00 Non-OLLI Member

An obscure Serbian mathematician whiled away his time in Austrian detention during WWI by working out the details of the Milankovich Cycles that serve as the climatic pacemaker. At the time, no one believed this man, but now his work provides a precise time scale with which to date climate events. For example, the specific dates when humans migrating out of Africa would have crossed a well-watered Sahara, or nearly walked across a shrunken Red Sea can be determined by the exact computation of astronomical values. It’s a complex story, but an essential one to understand earth history in evolution or continental drift. It is especially relevant today where the known relation between earth surface temperature and subtle variations in solar heating allows climate scientists to calibrate global warming models much better than the climate change deniers would have you believe. *Catering will be provided.Instructor: Fred PailletDay / Date: Wed, 11/29/17 (1)Time: 11:00 am to 1:00 pmLocation: Drake Max Enrollment: 35Cost: $40.00 OLLI Member / $55.00 Non-OLLI Member
