Hello everyone Another great Newsletter from Penny so please continue to send her any content you think may interest our members. Eight excellent paintings are on their way to Poland for the 21st ECWS Exhibition hosted by the Polish Watercolour Society in September. Six members are going to Poland—Dave Conlin, Derrick Fitzpatrick, Penny Maddison, Lucy Papalia, Cass Gartner and myself so our paintings were automatically selected. The remaining two paintings were selected from four submissions by a secret ballot and paintings by Stephanie Boyle and Jude Scott were selected in a very close vote. You can see all eight paintings on page 2. At our last committee meeting, we started the ball rolling for our Annual Awards Exhibition which is October 12 to 14th. One thing we all agreed we must work on is the use of social media to promote the exhibition. We also decided to just have one public Facebook page called Watercolours WA— this way anyone can join and post any information, news, exhibitions etc. You can send a friend request to Watercolours WA or be added by a member. I have to say I am not up to scratch using Facebook so I need to learn all the ins and outs because this, along with other social media, is definitely the way to go as far as marketing and publicity are concerned. So please—post, post post!! Signage is also going to be increased as our feedback on how visitors heard about the exhibition has shown that people who have seen a sign or passed by is one of the largest groups. By far the largest group though is those who have been told about the exhibition by one of our members—by whatever means so please keep up the good work! If you have any ideas regarding marketing and promotion of the AAE, we would love to hear from you……. As I mentioned in the last Newsletter, we would like to hear from any member who would like to join our dynamic, enthusiastic and entertaining committee for the next term which starts at the AGM at the end of June. Im not joking when I say that—we have a really good team, full of ideas and a willingness to follow them through—and we actually have entertaining committee meetings with the best morning teas! Marion, the Secretary and Derek, the Treasurer would both like to pass the job over to someone else so please have a good think about joining us. Not only will you be involved in the promotion of watercolours and our great Society but I can speak from personal experience when I say that you will get a huge amount of personal satisfaction and achievement from being a part of this great team. Hope to see you at the next meeting—all the details about it are on page 5 Happy painting! Sue :) I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. News of Members. Well done Sue Payne. Best Watercolour at

Beverley! Dave Conlin received a Highly Commended. Well done! Plus Annette Wallman and Sue sold both their paintings.

Sue Hibbert won the overall prize at The W.A. Society of the Arts and the Watercolour section which also won the People’s Choice Award. Well done.

I was so honoured to have 5 talented members of the Watercolour Society join 7 others at my Bird painting workshop at Forest Discovery Centre in Dwellingup. I don’t think anyone expected a plein air session at a bird painting workshop but the weather was so lovely and a friendly red breasted robin so cooperative it had to happen. Thanks Beni, Aurelie, Sandy, June Bennett and Pam White for being there and all the laughs. Penny.

June Sullivan is off to Egypt in July/August diving in the Red Sea photographing reference material for her lovely underwater paintings.

Sue with her winning painting.

Sandy’s painting of a tern.

Thanks to everyone who brought in paintings with the theme “people”. Derrek Fitzpatrick’s lovely 50’s ladies, Verena Marmion’s delightful studies and paintings of her daughter, Pauline Gill’s ladies from India and Dave Conlin’s sketch books. I’m afraid I didn’t make a note of the artist responsible for the cello player and portrait.

Sorry about that.

NEW MEMBER;

Congratulations to our new member voted in at the March meeting.

She is; JANE LI Welcome to the Watercolour Society of W.A.

Guest hour—March Meeting. It was all about packing the paints and hitting the road, painting plein air both home and abroad. We heard from Aussie Redback Tours about their painting tours with lots of interesting trips coming up. Member Renata Wright works for Redback organising their art tours and gave us a run-down on the exciting tours coming up. They also answered questions about any potential road trips we might decide to do. Then we all settled down to share info on our plein air and travelling

kit. Dave Conlin’s was very professional and fitted into a backpack and then he’s off on his motorbike to anywhere he wants to plein air. From there the kits got smaller and more compact until we ended with a tiny little purse for sketching on the run. Thanks to Sharon Kersting and

Renata Wright from Aussie Redback Tours and everyone else who took part. Another fun and informative Guest Hour.

Mary Lindsey Homestead; The City of Wanneroo have a new Artist in Residence Cottage and exhibition space available. Contact The City of Wanneroo for more info.
