1. July 4th - Mars Pathfinder is put on Mars to take pictures and land samples of the surface of the planet.

2. March 26th - The comet Hale-Bopp was 1st spotted by 80% of people world wide without a telescope. The greatest comet in the 20th century.

3. August 27th - California bans Affirmative Action, “the state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on a basis of race, sex, color ethnicity, or nation origin in the operation of public employment, education, or contracting”.

4. February 3rd – US, UN & France, all agree to freeze Nazis’ gold loot.

1. December 17th – President Clinton orders American and British air strikes on Iraq.

2. Late October – Oldest person ever to be in space is John Glenn at the age of 77.

3. Late June – Three men of a Ku Klux Klan drag James Byrd Jr. (an African American) to his death, they were later sentenced to death for this crime.

4. August 20th - Over 20,000 people die when the US bombs a pharmaceutical plant in Sudan. This plant produced more than 50% of Sudan medicine. The excuse for this was “counter-terrorism” the later was an “accident”. US did not pay for damages.

1. May 2nd – US citizens are protesting for an end to the bombing of Yugoslavia.

2. October 13th – Senate Republicans defeat ratification of the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban-Treaty, this is the first time an arms control treaty has been rejected by the senate.

3. December 31st – US turns over the complete administration of the Panama Canal to Panama.

4. November 15th – US and China sign a historical trade agreement.

1. October 12th – 17 US sailors die in an explosion that was a carefully planned terrorist act carried out by suicide bombers.

2. February 25th – Investors cause a stock plunge, this is the start of the end of the Internet stock boom.

3. June 25th – US navy is still doing shelling exercises of Puerto Rico’s Island which is used as a training site.

In the News:

1. April 1st – An American spyplane crashes with a fighter plane of China, the crew is detained for ten days.

2. 9-11, a day of infamy, Islamic terrorists hijack four US airliners. They crash two into the World Trade Centers, one into the pentagon, and one into a cornfield in Pennsylvania.

3. October 7th – US military make their first attack in the War on Terrorism on the Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan after 9-11.

4. January 4th – US agrees to ease restrictions on Cuba.

In the news:

1. January 29th – President Bush’s first State of Union address labels countries such as Iran, Iraq, and North Korea as “an axis of evil”.

2. March 2nd – US and Afghan troops launch an operation. This is known as Operation Anaconda. They launch this on al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.

3. May 13th – US and Russia reach landmark arms agreement. They agree to cut both countries’ nuclear arsenals by 2/3’s in the next 10 years.

4. July 21st – WorldCom, after admitting to misstating profits files for bankruptcy. This is the largest claim in US history.

1. February 1st - At NASA, the Space Shuttle Columbia explodes, the seven astronauts inside were all killed.

2. January 28th – Bush announces that he is ready to bomb Iraq.3. March 19th – US and Britain launch a war against Iraq.4. December 4th – President Bush gets rid of steel tariffs after

2. December 14th – At a conference in Baghdad, a man throws his shoes at President Bush and calls him a “dog”.

3. March 11th – The government begins to intervene in the US financial system. This was to avoid a crisis.

4. October 1st – US senate ratifies an agreement where they allow India to buy nuclear fuel on the world market.

1. June 1st – H1N1 disease spreads throughout the world.2. October 31st – The economic recession is deepening.3. June 12th – US televisions switch from analog to digital.4. July 4th – The crown of the Statue of Liberty is

reopened to the public. It had been closed for security purposes due to 9-11.
