This skin is mine This season launches with a major solo exhibition by South African based visual activist, Zanele Muholi. Somnyama Ngonyama presents a compelling range of self-portraits that explore a multitude of struggles, creating haunting and piercing works of art that gaze deeply at you, asking critical questions, reclaiming blackness and the representation of the black body.
As ever, we have a strong public programme featuring two festivals. Darbar Fringe will combine music, arts, talks and flash performances, exploring the confluence of urban, classical and contemporary arts – investigating South Asian cultural contexts in an ever-changing world. Back by popular demand is Melting Pot, our annual food and culture festival. Expect delicious cuisine from all over the globe made by a host of talented guest chefs from our local neighbourhoods.
The family programme strengthens with a weekly programme of events for young people, parents and carers. YARD, our
weekly programme of drama and art for young people, engaging budding artists and thinkers continues. If you are thinking of a career or have a creative idea our programme for engaging and starting up creative enterprises, Real Creative Futures, is recruiting.
This season is the start of a new era with our core funder Arts Council England. We are one of 843 National Portfolio Organisations and have been awarded investment from ACE for the next four years. For this we are very grateful as it allows us to engage with more communities, families and young people. Part of our challenge is to keep the power of arts alive and we hope that you can also consider joining our supporters and patrons programmes to help strengthen the NAE family.
We look forward to seeing you for an action packed season.

Ready-made objects and found materials are transformed into culturally loaded props, merging the political with the aesthetic – often commenting on specific events in South Africa’s recent history. Scouring pads and latex gloves address themes of domestic servitude, while simultaneously alluding to sexual politics, violence against black bodies and the suffocating prisms of gendered identity. Rubber tires, electrical cords or cable ties reference forms of social brutality and capitalist exploitation, and powerfully evoke the plight of workers – maids, miners and members of different disenfranchised communities. Using a range of artefacts – from chopsticks, can lids and safety pins to plastic bags or polythene wrapping – Muholi draws attention to urgent environmental issues and toxic waste. Accessories such as cowrie shells or beads highlight Western fascinations with clichéd, exoticised representations of African cultures and people as well as the global economies of migration, commerce and labour.
Zanele Muholi: Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness is an Autograph ABP touring exhibition, curated by Renée Mussai, Senior Curator and Head of Archive & Research at Autograph ABP, London. Renée will be leading a gallery tour on 17 May, see page 10 for details.

Zanele MuholiSOMNYAMA NGONYAMA, HAIL THE DARK LIONESS
28 APRIL – 24 JUNE 2018
EXHIBITION LAUNCH Friday 27 April, 6pm – 9pm
In this touring exhibition by Autograph ABP, South African visual activist Zanele Muholi presents their ongoing self-portrait series Somnyama Ngonyama (meaning Hail the Dark Lioness in isiZulu, one of the eleven official languages in South Africa). The exhibition comprises more than 75 photographs with Muholi using their body as a canvas to confront the politics of race and representation in the visual archive.
“I’m reclaiming my blackness, which I feel is continuously performed by the privileged ‘other’. My reality is that I do not mimic being black; it is my skin, and the experience of being black is deeply entrenched in me. Just like our ancestors, we live as black people 365 days a year, and we should speak without fear.” Zanele Muholi
Taken primarily between 2014 and 2017, each portrait in Somnyama Ngonyama poses critical questions about social justice, human rights and contested representations of the black body. Muholi’s self-reflective and psychologically charged portraits are unapologetic in their artistry as they explore different archetypes / personae and offer visual reflections inspired by personal experiences and socio-political events.
